"The bearer of bad news."
This was released on the 15th. But I missed it until now.

'The Contender' suffers a ratings knockdown in its first Sunday broadcast.

http://www.realitytvworld.com/index/articles/story.php?s=3318

I personaly liked the Wednesday time slot and put it up against that gay azz show 'Americon Idel' (typo on purpose)
That has got to be the most lame show out there. I have tried to watch the show over and over. Americon Idel sucks Royaly.

I hope it was just a case of people getting lost and eventualy finding their way back.

What do you guys think? I can't do nothing more than just cross my fingers. I wont pray about it because I have to use my prayers wisely if not the people upstairs may not answere my prayers in a true emergency

1. "Hopeful"
The biggest problem is that, after finishing second in A18-49 in its first two time slots, The Contender finished FOURTH in A18-49 in the Sunday slot. That has to change this week, or the show is in trouble (at least on Sunday night).

It's already clear that older viewers aren't going to watch this show. But the Thursday showing was 21st for the week in A18-49 ... not great, but OK for a new show -- and more than adequate for NBC to believe that the show has a future, even if not on Sundays.

Like you, I hope the viewers got lost last week and return this week. We'll see.

2. "Sunday 8PM - bad time"
Sunday 8PM is a bad night for it. It's up against the Simpson's and Cold Case. 9PM or 10PM would be better.

The trainer, Tommy, called into the Howard Stern Show today to ask Howard if he wanted to come the the final show in Las Vegas. Howard jokingly asked if the final show would be next week (due to the low ratings).

Howard likes the show BTW.

Yeah, sounds like we are facing more of the musical time slots game in the near future.

This show, as much as I enjoy it may be in real trouble. Most of the big times boxing fans are having a hard time getting into it. There is just not enough boxing on the show to really appeal to them. I think of the 20 something fighters from the gym I have asked, maybe 5 have said they would watch it in the future, and only 1 other person beside myself had watched it.
This show also is struggling with the non-boxing fan, because there is to much boxing. A fan of American Idol is a fan because they can put themselves in the show. American Idol and shows like it do well because people tend to be obsessed with the idea of being famous. I know I often wonder what it would be like. And while all 16 of these fighters are pro fighters, none of them can be considered famous on a Hollywood level.
The truth is not just anyone can be a fighter, even if you are blessed with natural strength and athletic ability, most people do not have the commitment to run 5 to 10 miles every day, than work and 8 hour shift, then go to the gym and lift for 2 hours followed by 2 hours with a 70 pound bag, than not eat because you are watching your weight, and then spend the weekends sparing, all for $250.00 to $2000.00 every other month just to endure enough pain to make the average person pass out. AI is appealing because if you were blessed with a good voice, you’re in. The bachelor - If your pretty or handsome your in, Survivor? If you’re lucky you’re in. And I think allot of people can put themselves in one of those categories. Whether it is true or not. Television creates fantasy worlds, and most of us have shut the door turned the tunes on full blast and visualized ourselves singing on stage being adored by thousands of screaming fans. How many of us can say we used to lock our door and pretend we were in a boxing match? Remember the cool winter nights with a basketball in the driveway? Counting down..3....2....1 he shoots! He sinks it! Remember how good you could make the sounds of the crowd? Now remember the time you went 15 with Liston? Never happened huh?
I hope this show does well, but as the episodes go by I find myself wondering, will I really care what happens Sunday after Manny and Erik trade the night before?
And I will admit there is some jealousy in me, and I can see it in some of the younger faces at the gym as well. Where was our contender 15 years ago, and for the younger guys, why were they not asked?
I say that for this reason; if the show can’t get the small corner of the world that makes up the boxing community, than they don’t get credibility with the rest of the world. Remember minor league football?
I think the big reality TV heads have got way to far into themselves, reality TV worked because drama produces its self, and I feel that the makers of this show and some of the other shows are trying to hard to dictate drama. AI does well because they sit back and let what happens happen, that’s reality. But on the contender they are trying to make the shows drama with clever editing and forced drama.
Maybe next time they can just hold an eliminator, you want drama? Just sit back and watch what a fighter goes thru on a day-to-day basis, watch how they suffer thru life trying to make ends meet. Watch as their cars are repossessed after an injury not only keeps them out of the ring, but keeps them from pouring concrete 9 to 5 Mon - Fri. watch as the results from an MRI are read to them by a stranger that thinks what they do is stupid, and listen to how they are belittled by the general public. Watch as their personal life’s are destroyed a month before a big fight, watch as they are used by the governing bodies of the sport. The show is supposed to let fighters choose their own destiny, but that is not reality. Being a fighter is living drama, the show did not need to try and build it, and they should have just let it happen. Spend and hour on a California Highway with a fighter behind the wheel, watch as road ragers shout violent threats at them as they try and stay focused after a 16 hour day of work, training and weight watching. I wish I could describe how it feels to know if you wanted to you could crush with a single blow the skulls of 99.5% of the world s population, but I cant so the next best thing would be to let you watch every Sunday as we smile from the drivers seat as a idiot in a $60,000 SUV gives us the bird and threatens us with violence. Its funny, boxing is such a brutal sport, but you know I have never once knew a fighter to get out of the car to crush a highway tough guy.
And if you really want drama watch as our careers come to an end, watch as we try and regroup ourselves after 2 million years of evolution has been beaten out of us. Watch as our wives give our managers our two-week notice as we lay in a bed at St. Lutherans ICU.
Watch as we struggle thru the rest of our lives without a pension plan, without ever having had medical insurance. You want reality let us show you reality. You want drama ask my wife why she has to ask me three times to take out the trash.
This show sadly to say has missed the mark, it has landed dead in the center of the two groups it was trying to attracted, The fight fans and the reality TV fans. And much like the NHL’s players union and the team owners the two sides will be unwilling to meat in the middle.
Just my thoughts on the ratings thing. Can you feel the hours of therapy at work here..lol

P.S. Manny in 8.
