"ABC Indefinitely Postpones 'The Runner'" |
Guess I don't have to worry about developing "CatchTheRunner.com" anymore... damn, there goes the waste of a domain registration http://dailynews.yahoo.com/h/nm/20011022/re/leisure_runner_dc_1.html LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - ABC's planned reality series ``The Runner'' will be sitting out the next season, the network said on Monday. The network said the show being developed by actors Matt Damon and Ben Affleck is being put on ``hiatus'' because it cannot be made in the current environment -- a reference to the changes in the viewing landscape since the Sept. 11 attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon (news - web sites). The high-concept program would have seen a single person -- the runner -- trying to make his way across the country as agents and television viewers tried to track him down for a bounty of up to $1 million. The show was originally set to debut on ABC, a unit of The Walt Disney Co., next fall. ``Unfortunately, it is our view that today's environment would not be conducive to this type of television event,'' said ABC Entertainment Television Group Co-chairman Lloyd Braun. ``We have spent a great deal of time and effort developing what we feel is a totally unique and exciting series.'' Braun said the show could still be made in the future if circumstances ``evolve in such a way that we'll eventually be comfortable moving forward.''

2. "RE: The concept" |
>An interesting fact: The Runner was being pitched at the same >time last summer as The Amazing Race. TAR was >cast, made and is airing -- while The Runner is >still in development and now is cancelled. Forgive me, >but I don't think the "current environment" is all that >was wrong with this show. All the above IS TRUE, but The Runner did have a number of other problems -- for starters, they went through 2-3 producers before finding someone they thought could handle the job. I found the below article, and I don't even think this is the final guy they ended up with: http://tv.zap2it.com/news/tvnewsdaily.html?16537 LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) - After nearly 10 months of searching for a showrunner for "The Runner," ABC has hired veteran producer Roger Goodman, according to Variety. Goodman, an 18-time Emmy-winner who directed ABC's 2000 millennium coverage, will be responsible for mounting the "monumental production challenge," according to Lloyd Braun, ABC Entertainment Television Group's co-chairman. Created by Academy Award-winners Ben Affleck and Matt Damon, "The Runner" follows one contestant who must elude a nationwide, 28-day manhunt while simultaneously performing up to eight different missions created by the show's producers. Viewers across the country, aided by regular updates on the contestant's whereabouts from the series and the show's website, can track and possibly win cash prizes for "tagging" the runner by registering with the website. If the runner manages to evade capture for the entire month, he/she will win the $1 million prize. Exactly how the runner will be caught, and not harmed in the process, is still being figured out, but ABC executives are confident that they will find a solution. They will also have to figure out a way to use hidden cameras to keep tabs on the runner's progress without drawing the public's attention to the contestant. "Because this show is so difficult to execute and such a difficult undertaking, we needed someone who could break through walls for us," said Andrea Wong, ABC's senior vice president for alternative series and specials. "Roger's the best guy I know to do that. He's a killer." She added that Goodman's background in sporting events was crucial since ABC is essentially creating a gigantic sporting event. Goodman has been at ABC for 36 years, working for ABC News and ABC Sports on events such as the Olympics, "Monday Night Football," coverage of the Gulf War and 1993's ABC special "Michael Jackson Talks to Oprah." Affleck and Damon, along with Sean Bailey and Chris Moore will also serve as executive producers on the project via their Live Planet production company.
