I don't know how brilliant this move is. The only immediate benefit was that he got to spend a day with his boyfriend "ThunderDan". In the long term, i doubt it means anything. Are any of the jury members, if it comes down to it, really going to vote for Jon simply because his granny died? Not likely. Well maybe Lill will vote that way, but that is it. Then again if jon is in the final two it will be with Burton, and in this case Lill would vote for Jon anyway because Burton would have betrayed her. I'll say this it is easily the most Machiavellian move in Survivor History. However, this is not "just a TV show". Sure he may win, but he is a scumbag for doing this. His grandmother is a real perosn, not a writers creation. To lie about her death to gain favor is just despicable. You don't make a mockery of the death of a loved one. Survivor will end and eventually the money will be spent, but he will have to live with his actions. You don't make light about it. Ever.

>I don't know how brilliant this >move is. The only immediate >benefit was that he got >to spend a day with >his boyfriend "ThunderDan". \ ...then you must've missed the part of the show where he used the "swear on my dead grandma" thing to sway Christa and Sandra to vote out T. Seems like an "immediate benefit" to me.
In the >long term, i doubt it >means anything. Are any of >the jury members, if it >comes down to it, really >going to vote for Jon >simply because his granny died? ...no, but the way he used the dead grandma thing at TC to show everyone how "the game has changed for me now" and "3 days ago I could've backstabbed these people but not now" could very well help him out in future vote decisions. As far as the final 2 goes, we'll never know cause its pretty obvious by now who the final two are and he isn't in it. >However, this is not "just a >TV show". ...sure it is! That's all it is, nothing more. Nothing you do or say there matters in real life in the long run...trust me on that one.

To >lie about her death to >gain favor is just despicable. ....to me, its beautiful. >You don't make a mockery >of the death of a >loved one. ..why not? Who cares? Unless you are going to argue that its non-disputable that karma rules all of our lives then why can't you "make a mockery of the death of a loved one."
Survivor will end >and eventually the money will >be spent, but he will >have to live with his >actions. ...guarantee you 100% that the money lasts ALOT longer than any reprecussions he will face for his actions.

They are still all rich and out of prison. They won the game, right? Doesn't matter that they broke a bunch of laws doing it or screwed thousands of employees and millions of investors, because the goal was to get the most money for themselves as possible, so they are winners, right? Jon could be the smartest guy on the planet and win the million (which he won't), but that doesn't make it cool to admire his approach. If you think so, you strike me as the type who will cheat on taxes as long as you think you can, or who would keep a wallet even if you saw the person drop it. An any means that justifies the end, and the end is always measured in $ kind of person... I'm sure it works for you. He has failed to realize that the producers would certainly attempt to contact his family and thus discover the lie. He even made it easy for the producers by confessing/bragging on camera. Now, if Mr. Playfair had any real insight into the show, he would have realized that MB is a Machiavellian SOB who will make absolutely certain that John's 'beautiful, creative play' is subsequently exposed to the other players. All it would take is a quick emergency production meeting during filming to change prize in the next reward challenge into a video from home starring guess who? Yup - Dear Old Gramma Playfair herself. It is a virtual certainty that John will be outed and John should have recognized this flaw in his plans. A work of art? More like a fatal mistake!

...there is NO WAY Burn-it would "out" Jon for his lie...for a number of reasons. For one, I guarantee he thought it was brilliant when he saw it happen and truly admired Jon for adding a new wrinkle to his stale game/show. Further, the producers want/need to encourage the contestants to ve honest and forthcoming in their confessionals...otherwise, they would never get any quality sound bites. If MB started having JP openly rat out the contestants for stuff they told the production crew in "confidence" then the net result would be to have contestants start to edit themsevlves during confessionals..it would end up looking like BB2 where all the contestants knew that the jury was watching the show so they just kissed each other's ass in the diary room. Not very good TV...and after all, MB's main goal is to entertain. Thirdly, to "out" Jon would basically sign Jon's walking papers for that episode. That would constitute the produciton crew openly tampering with the outcome of the show. Another no-no that MB tries to stay away from as much as possible. Sure, JP will ask some leading and insinuating questions at TC, but how on Earth could he ask Jon about the lie without completely outing him in the process? The point is, look at the way JP hyped the lie before the season even started. That just tells you how much MB/JP loved the strategy and couldn't wait for America to see it. You watch, when reporters ask MB/JP about the lie now they will praise Jon relentlessly. >

157. "Before this season, I'd agree..." |
'... That would constitute the production crew openly tampering with the outcome of the show. Another no-no that MB tries to stay away from as much as possible...'Ever since the travesty that was the return of the outcasts, I believe that MB actively works to try and change game play. Further, the accusations of tampering go right back S1 with the Stilman lawsuit. MB should change his initials to BM (for Bunim Murray). The rules for Survivor have devolved into something resembling Paradise Hotel and I think that says a lot about Mr. Burnett's obsessive need to control the show. The key clue to MB's response to Jon's 'Big Lie' is the editing last night. MB showed the bare minimum of the Jon/Dan visit to reveal the lie and to reveal the hubris involved. Then immediately after that very short sequence, Thunder Dan was placed back on the boat and sent home. The standard boring sequence invovlving discussions about life back at home (blah, blah, blah) shown on every season of the show was abruptly truncated. The symbolism of that editing decision is just as strong as the image of Osten's torch lying in the dirt. If a contestant had pre-arranged for a family member to smuggle some sort of a resource (food/water/matches) onto the show in order to achieve some sort of advantage over the other contestants, MB would see this as cheating and would modify the game in order to punish the offender. Jonny Playfair and Thunder Dan conspired to have Dan smuggle a piece of theater onto the island instead of a piece of food. Dan's actions constituted direct assistance from outside the physical confines of the game. Jon's ruse about the dead grandmother would not work if he did not have the assistance from another party. MB's controlling nature would not allow him to even consider praising or condoning Jon's actions. MB's resentment over a contestant breaching the seal around the closed environment of 'his game' is a guarantee. His controlling nature will force him to interpret Jon's actions as cheating because Jon basically got one over on him. Something will happen in the course of the game that will allow the narrative of MB's own retribution to unfold. It will, of course, be "the game" the catches Jon out but there will be some little editing clue that will be MB's signature. The stylistic equivalent of the Emperor's thumb pointing down, if you will. MB's ego won't allow him to let Jon get away with it. I will agree with you in one important respect... the Big Lie has certained re-ignited my interest after it had waned substantially in the wake of the 'invasion from loser lodge'. MB knows how to hype anything to boost ratings whether it be a big lie or a small granola bar and I would imagine that next week's episode will have the highest ratings for the season to date. They've hyped it to boost ratings because that's what producers do... they hype their shows to get ratings. Notice that it was JP that did all the talking in hyping the lie. The were no comments from MB on the subject. If MB comments, it will be after Jon is gone and the comment will be a simple, smug truism about cheaters not prospering and how 'the game itself' ultimately undid Jon's 'little plan'. I predict that MB will not offer a single word of praise for Jon - his ego won't let him. If I'm wrong Shakes, I'll eat yer pointy little hat! MB will not be able to resist making sure that he gets the chance to finally show who's the boss on his show. Ultimately Jon's demise will be depicted as a form of righteous retribution. The narrative of the game's 'revenge' upon Jon will unfold because MB's ego will not allow Jon's successful breach of the game environment to go unpunished. I think this often used MB quote from S2 would sum up MB's mood over the issue: '... separate the fuckers...'

Go Shakes! It was underhanded, dirty, rotten and fricken brilliant! It made me think this person may actually be a player, to have the forethought to actually think ahead, know if you get to a certain part of the game that you will have your family or friend visit you and plan what will go down when it does happen? Brilliant. Granted it may only have won him that challenge, but somewhere in the back of my mind I can't help but ask myself if when he said "I swear upon my grandmother..." if that had some final affect on Sandra and Christa's agreement to vote Tiajuana off. Even if he didn't say that, did it play into their decision to trust him at that point? Brilliant.

unscramble "Survivor Pearl Islands" to form 20 new words (like Boggle)you have to spell Christa T Jon all out for mispellings and using plurals he awards IC to Burton but he spelled Liaison wrong (mising second I) Now the contest is between Lill, Darrah, and Sandra for IC and a new game with 3 new words....didn't catch it all but I believe it's timed. Lill got 10 D got 14 Sandra got 12 Darrah wins IC! OMH!!!!!

>This lie actually makes me wonder >more if the final voting >is live at the end. Having a live vote at the reunion show would be terribly unfair. It would put the final two under more scrutiny than anyone else. This would be a perfect example of why *NOT* to have a live vote. He made a move that is, within the context of the game, a brilliant move....but, if he's in the final two, and the vote comes after everyone found out...it totally changes the complexion of the game. I hope they never do a live vote for the finals...but then again, I never thought they'd bring evicted players back either....

I seem to remember a certain Kim Johnson beating Lex and Ethan in the final immunity challenge. And while Colby had a long immunity streak, Keith had the Colbster beaten twice if he wouldn't have been such a putz (I'll never forget the key challenge they did in the darkness, *slaps head). I really don't think Burton is going to go on a long Immunity run, but I may be very, very wrong, I admit.Christa and Sandra are in classic Scylla and Charybdis situation. There are two groups: T and Darrah; Jon, Burton, and Lillian who want them out. If they get rid of Burton, T & D will realign with the others to evict Sandra and Christa. Now that they've gotten rid of T, if B/L/J stick together, the best they can hope for is a tie. You can stick a fork in them either way. I actually think the latter option, the one they choose, was the right way to go. Jon promised Christa and Sandra that Lil will be the next to go (yeah right). Can't wait to see how the next episode plays out.

If Jon & Burton really do decide to keep their promise to Sandra and Christa, they've gone insane. Besides Sandra, who has committed some gaffes over the last two weeks but still is fighting hard (Hail Sandra! LAST EDITED ON 11-26-03 AT 09:44 PM (EST)Darn! All T had to do was keep her mouth shut and Burton was a goner!!! What in the world was she thinking? *MEMO TO TIJUANA*, when you've got 4 out of 7 votes you don't need anymore! Only one Morgan left to root for (Lill isn't a Morgan). *shrugs* I realize that you should take every advantage you can to advance in SURVIVOR but heck(in Neleh's words), you've got to draw the line somewhere Jon! Sorry but that's just sick! Go home (in Jiffy's words to Osten)and join your Grandma in her Jerry Springer viewing because you're not worthy to be on SURVIVOR! Sorry for the rant but sheesh, maybe they should listen to Sandra more often when she's bashing Jon, because she's probably right. Anyway, I will definitely miss Tijuana because I was a Morgan from day one and she was one of my favorites from that tribe and overall. Can't wait to see T on the Jury. Sad to see you go. Maybe Sandra will get Darrah on the right track and hopefully Balboa will vote out the mighty Burton next. BTW, congrats to Darrah on her IC win! Bring home the mil girl! -PP

>...after what he pulled off tonight, there's never been anyone more worthy of being on SuvivorYou think? It just goes to show that the people left aren't very bright. He isn't a very good actor. He reminds of Hutch from Joe Schmo. Not very believable. But, if it came down to Lil or Jon, Jon would win, lie or not. It was for reward. Didn't really affect anything. What I thought interesting was how good Sandra was at hiding her booting of the fish. I almost thought this was going to be the big lie. It puts a target on Christa. Somehow I feel Sandra and Jon have a secret alliance. It would be an interesting strategy. Make people think you hate each other. Have people think of voting the other, then come up with a reason why someone else should go.

Sheer brilliance. Jon was playing the game before he even got on the island. I want to hate him, I really want to hate him, but I can't because it was just too damn good. As loathsome as he is, I must applaud that he's playing the game. I'd much rather watch his machinations than endure idiots rolling over and playing dead, or handing the million to someone else by just following along with the strategy of the moment.Tijuana and Sandra both made stupid, stupid moves tonight. Tijuana forgot the lesson that Nicole had taught the Morgans on day 3 - when you've got enough votes lined up against someone else, SHUT UP. And Sandra, after saying over and over and over that she doesn't trust Jon, takes his word and chooses a final 4 with him over one with T&D. And it looks like Burton makes a stupid move next week, by not being willing to lie smoothly to Lil and say that of course they're still final 2. Maybe that gullible old Scout will finally wake up and play the game. We really do have guidelines here. Believe it or not, the Guidelines make things more fun. Really.

I agree that Jon's move was clever. Also, it is funny as hell that he got away with the lie! And it exposes how naive some players are (like Lil). You bashers are taking this way too seriously. If I went on Survivor, I would swear I was playing for my sick child long-term health care needs. Why not? Now, it would be bad luck to use a real child's name, but I could always make one up!Anyway, Jon is the best player in this season - he can change people's minds, stir up #####, align with everyone and anyone each and every week. And most players tell us on the Early Show that they liked him! So there's more to Jon than we are being shown. Yes, I loved Rupert, but you can't win this game without lieing and scheming, and Rupert was too honest and loyal for that. Jon has only lost out on one scheme, when Trish was booted. Otherwise, he's been in the thick of the boot plot, and I respect him for that, even if he isn't my style for a friend. It is a game, after all. It is just a game! (OK - a game on national t.v., but still, it's a game, and all is fair). P.S. And, no, I am not for the Enron exec's who stole real people's money in real life. Jon hasn't hurt a single person by lieing.

131. "Secret Alliance Between Sandra and Jon" |
I mentioned this alliance last week during the East Coast update, but no one really replied. I think this secret alliance is likely and makes good sense strategically. Each one can target someone and manipulate others. Sandra brought T to overhear what Burton and Jon were saying. Jon knew this was going to happen (pre-arranged) and mentions that Tijuana will be a target after Christa. Sandra tells T they are targeting the strongest man Burton. Sandra, throws out the fish and makes it look like Christa. Their 2 targets. No one makes a decision by themselves in this game. They look to others to agree with. Christa voted for T because her and Sandra agreed to vote that way. Together Jon and Sandra can target the other players without them knowing, guaranteeing final 2. Please be kind...

I'm thinking the same way. She's just too vocal expressing her dislike for Jon, she is almost pushing it down our throats, like she's making sure she convinces us.There's an interesting 'unseen alliance' theory on DEENA'S DOCKET: E9 "Certainly we know that at least one other player has it in for Jon. Did my eyes deceive me or did Sandra not cast a vote for the weasel? I am a bit baffled. Her main power point, Rupert clearly planned to oust Darrah. All were told to vote ccordingly which would have resulted in a tie with Rupert and Darrah. But with Sandra voting for Jon, Rupert would have been voted out anyway. I think she is planning ahead, way ahead, to the finals. I think she might be playing both sides better than Jon. There is a secret deal somewhere that we do not know about. Perhaps Sandra was allowed to cast a vote for Jon to protect her from the wrath of Rupert should the plan fail. I don’t know, really, I do not know. But if you take last week’s episode of Sandra wanting to get rid of Rupert with this week’s vote, something is clearly going on."

168. "RE: Secret Alliance Between Sandra and Jon" |
Dear Abbahammer ... You are a genius! This has to be true ... From the beginning, they have made their dislike for each other very public ... And almost too over the top ... If Sandra and Jon could say from Day One that it was the two of them and then go their seperate ways, making sure that one of them formed "alliances" with one half of Drake, and the other formed "alliances" with the other half, then both of them would always be safe ... Then when they got to the merge, Sandra voiced her opinion on the Christa/Rupert side, and Jon voiced his opinion on the Burton/Lil side, making sure both of their butts were covered ... Why else would Sandra and Christa end up changing their minds to vote with Jon, Burton, and Lil for T ... This is why it makes sense and absolutely ingenious of them ... No one in the history of Survivor has had this secret of an alliance, nor used an alliance in this manner, and it is a brilliant way of playing the game ... Now they will have to go after Burton or Lil to break up that twosome, more likely than not Burton who is the strongest ... Leaving Darrah, who no one is worried about ... I swear that girl is so clueless it's pathetic ... And Christa, who is along with Sandra for the ride ... So Burton is next for sure, unless he wins Immunity, forcing them to get rid of Lil ... But lets say Burton is next ... A couple of things can happen after that ... ~ They will vote out either Lil or Darrah, keeping Christa, who is alligned with Sandra, to make sure Jon and Sandra make the top two, making the Final Four: Christa, Sandra, Jon and either Lil or Darrah ... Christa, Sandra and Jon will then 3-1 vote out Lil or Darrah, leaving Christa to be booted next, and putting them in the Final 2 ~ They will vote out Christa, who is more of a physical threat than Lil or Darrah, leaving Sandra, Jon, Lil and Darrah as the Final Four ... Since Darrah and Lil are both idiots and have no relationship whatsoever, they are more than likely not going to realize the Jon/Sandra alliance, nor are they likely to team up in their vote at tribal council, nor are they likely to win any Immunities, leading to smooth sailing to the Final 2As always, it is going to depend on Immunity ... I've read in other spoilers that Darrah and Lil are in fact the Final 2 ... Which I can't even stomach to think about ... And am praying is not true ... I really hope to see Jon and Sandra in the Final 2 with Sandra winning but we just have to wait and see ... Once again, thanks for posting your thoughts ... I am right there with you ...

PC acted up last night. That was not fun.Happy Birthday Pepe! Good to see the Bungler in here! I really believe that the BL changed the complexion of the game. Sandra and Christa were fooled by Jon's swearing on his Grams, which caused T to be voted out. This changed the complexion. Sure it may not change Jon's outcome, but it sure changed T's outcome and hence the complexion of the game. I never liked Jon and still dont. However, I do respect his game play throughout the season. But the big BUT is that lying about death in my book is taboo. If he concocted some other lie with his family member I would have respected it (still wouldnt like him). T screwed up. Burton is shown as being honest with Lil. Visions of Andrew's honesty conversation with Lil should be floating in Lil's head. Can you say (fool me twice?) I think this will make Lil very angry towards Burton, and I think she will not leave her trust in him for her outcome in his hands. LookeeLoo
