"The Survivor <==> Protonesis Connection ... " |
There has been speculation that an enigmatic security firm, PROTONESIS, is possibly a shill for CBS and that their sole function is to obscure the real winner of SURVIVOR by providing the general public (and the media) with a bogus alternative.PROTONESIS sent out a press release on July 12th staking their entire reputation on their claim that voice-analysis proves RUDY is the ultimate winner. The fact that they don't really *have* a reputation, linguistic credibility or any discernable existence before February, did not seem to phase Bryant Gumbel, who interviewed Clay Fondren on the "Early Show" (7/26). This in itself seems suspicious (Why does a company with no track record merit national television exposure? Who arranged this?). Moreover, it seems odd that the two contact addresses listed in their the web domain registry point back to: -----1.) A private residence, and -----2.) Some place called "DeWitt Electric Ofc". Of course, none of this is new information -- I'm just summarizing several previous posts on the subject. And if I were to play devil's advocate, I might point out that since the domain was registered in February 2000, that Mark Burnett would have to be supremely cagey indeed to have the foresight to register a fake site way back then -- way before it was remotely apparent that SURVIVOR would be even moderately popular and that we'd be disecting it frame-by-frame for clues. So, perhaps there is no connection between CBS and PROTONESIS. Perhaps it's just a small upstart trying to earn a reputation by hitching their wagon to SURVIVOR's star. Perhaps those of us suspicious of their very dubious claims and wondering if they are a "front" are simply conspiracy buffs, grasping at straws. Fair enough, but one thing still nags at me (and no one else seems to have noticed it): Somewhere, tucked amid the purposefully vague pseudo-scientific double-talk on the PROTONESIS website (www.protonesis.com), they are gracious enough to provide a translation of their own company name: "Protonesis is -- New Ground". Though you'd need a plentiful supply of lexical grease to force that translation to fit, I suppose you could twist and torture the morphemes enough to mount a weak defense of it. Nonetheless, I'll offer a better one: =====> "Protonesis is -- First ISLAND" <===== /nesis/ means "ISLAND" in Greek (think: Polynesia, "many islands"). The prefix /proto/ generally means "first", as in the first in a "series" (think: prototype), or the early stages of something (think: protostar). If I were Mark Burnett designing a fake company name, I'd certainly insert a subtle wink at "Survivor". On the other hand, it reeks as a name for a security company. For those imagining I dove off the deep end, I'll say that I do not really believe there is a connection between CBS and PROTONESIS. It's just that the name thing is such a bizarre coincidence that I had to mention it.

Good detective work.Seems like a red herring/ practical joke if you ask me.Caught the "president" of the company,on the Early Show.Bryant couldn't stop laughing at the Protonesis analysis of the castaways interviews.Perhaps Mr.Gumbo wrote a few of the "lines" himself.

Great analysis of the linguistic connection between Protonesis and Survivor! Although I agree that it seems a little too far-fetched that MB would go this far to mess with people's heads, all the evidence points to the fact that this company is entirely BOGUS, and therefore any predictions coming from them are almost certainly, absolutely not reliable. But it's amazing, how much news they were able to create with this press release! This was not just for the speculation message boards; it was all over newspapers, TV, even CNN; even people at my office were talking about it. Cudos to whoever managed their PR campaign! Good work, RavinDave. For all the times I've seen this name, it never occurred to me to think about its meaning. You're right, "first island" is the best interpretation! Wonder if there will be a company for Survivor II with a name meaning "second desert"?
