"This is the Rupert Show - Why?" |
As Someone else put it, "Welcome to the Rupert Show!!!"The question is, WHY has MB made the 1st half of SURVIVOR Panama the Rupert Show? I'm Pretty certain we've NEVER had a player Forced on us like Ruperts has been. There have been fan favorites in the past, and some of them have had a show or two to highlighting them, but we are 5 episodes in, and I would argue ALL of them have been largely about making us Rupert Fans. So why? Some possibilities come to mind: 1) Maybe MB wanted to pull fans back in that were disgusted with Jenna's landslide win in SURVIVOR Amazon? But, this seems dangerous to me. When Rupert gets the Ax, many viewers may see this as yet another example of the best player not winning. If winning fans back is his goal, I think MB runs the risk of this blowing up in his face. 2) Or maybe Rupert was just too much of a force in the game to be anything other than the main focus? Ok, but editting has a lot to do with the fact that we view Rupert as so powerfull & lovable. Michelle & Burtons comments indicate that there's was enough left on the cutting room floor that Rupert didn't HAVE to be editted as such a lovable Teddy Bear. 3) Or maybe when Rupert exits the show, he will do something so distateful to viewers that MB can't redeem him. Normally even players the fans hate get an episode or two of redemption before they leave. If Rupert ends up doing something so egregious that his fellow SURVIVORS turn on him, and MB can't redeem him then, MB may have decided to give him the redemption early in the show. I doubt this because I don't think MB would have given him 5 episodes to build him up so much just to watch him have a terrible fall. MB might have given him 1 or 2 episodes but not 5. 4) Maybe MB is worried that the "TWIST" (returning players) will be loved by some, but HATED by others (as stated by JP) - potentially turning off loyal viewers. So MB's stacking the deck in favor of viewers LOVING THE TWIST. It may be that this is why MB's shoving the lovable Rupert down our throat. That way when Rupert gets Axed by treachery (The Big Lie), The average viewer will CHEER when Rupert gets a second chance and comes back as a resurrected player (or in the Ghost Tribe). This is the possibility I think is most likely. I really HATE the idea that a booted player could return, but I can see most casual fans accepting it if it allows a LOVED RUPERT, WRONGED by another player to return for REVENGE.

Honestly, I think they've got nothing else. I mean, think about it. The episodes, other than Rup's hilarious comments such as Shawn's question as to where he found the spear- "in the ocean", have been pretty boring. Editing could probably have thrown Rup into a negative light, but they already have plenty of footage to make Jon the ass of the show. Without Rup, and I hate to say this- without Jon; there wouldn't be much of a show to watch. Andrew has the personality of a mushroom, the rest of Morgan are just boorrrrrrrrring. Trish doesn't seem to have much of a personality, but Sandra does. I think MB is milking the Rupert character for as many ratings as he can get, but this week is setting us up for Shawn/Jon to begin taking center stage because Rup's time is drawing near.Just my 2 cents..

I think MB just really liked Rupert. And he is so fitted for the pirate theme. So MB is showcasing him as much as he can until he is gone. MB hopes by then the fans will be so involved in the show they will continue to watch. If Rupert is betrayed, MB thinks the fans will watch to see those who betrayed Rubert get booted so they can cheer. The fans will want revenge for Rupert.

Don't forget the raison d'etre of this show. No, it's not to televise a game, like the World Series. It's to entertain people, so they will watch, so that sponsors will pay more money, so that CBS will make more profit. That's why so many of these people, even now, say that they didn't watch the show much, or at all, before becoming contestants. They were not selected for their game playing ability but their entertainment value. Many (most) don't work out that way. Rupert has succeeded beyond their wildest dreams. He's given so much face time because he's by far the best entertainer. I don't think we can see much more into it. He might win; he might be the next out. The votes aren't determined by home entertainment value.

anyone can be edited as interesting. Matt was terribly bland in S6, but edited him as "being slightly insane. They could play up osten's wimpiness, darrah's...whatever she has. Anybody can be made worth watching.

LAST EDITED ON 10-20-03 AT 11:38 PM (EST)>Don't forget the raison d'etre of this show. Rupert has succeeded beyond their wildest dreams. Fast Eddie, you couldn't have stated it better. The thing that astounds me is how many people have voted on the CBS website that they think Rupert will win it all! Maybe it's just wishful thinking, but the most popular people on each episode have NOT won--far from it! The sad thing is that many casual viewers may turn S7 off once Rupert is voted off. That's too bad, because this has been one of my favorite Survivor series.

<< The sad thing is that many casual viewers may turn S7 off once << Rupert is voted off. That's too bad, because this has been one << of my favorite Survivor series. That's exactly my point. MB is investing a HUGE amount of time in Rupert & many casual viewers may turn off S7 once Rupert is voted off. MB seems to be taking a Big Risk by making this the Rupert show. So the question is WHY? I don't buy the argument that he's the only interesting one out there. I think an interesting story could be editted around Andrew, as a personable leader of the Morgan grasping for a way to stop the bleeding. Or an interesting story could be editted around Ryan O. A good kid thats out of his depth, trying to provide for his tribe to no avail. Or an interesting story could be editted around Tijuana as the power behind the throne. Or an interesting story could be editted around Shawn with his alliance falling apart desperately trying to form a new alliance from a position of weakness. My point is, I don't believe we have ever had ONE character so Dominate a SURVIVOR series. And I think MB MUST have a reason for it. Again as you say: << The sad thing is that many casual viewers may turn S7 off once << Rupert is voted off. That's too bad, because this has been one << of my favorite Survivor series. I can't believe MB would allow this as a possibility when he editted the show.

This is an excellent point. The production crew COULD make a storyline out of some of the others, but every week they're faced with a choice -- 3 days worth of film footage from a dozen cameras cut down to 40 minutes. They get a list of 'interesting events' and they get ranked on their 'interesting-ness', storyline appeal, and viewer interest. So you get: - Rupert wearing a skirt - Darrah taking a shower - Osten drowning - Rupert flipping out over spear - Jon being an idiot (546 times/week) etc. Far down the list are: - Tijuana sitting doing nothing. - Trish sitting around doing nothing - Christa sitting around going through withdrawals. So you COULD make a story out of some of the others, but Rupert gives them a TON more interesting material, because he DOES stuff, and speaks his mind. Naturally, that's a recipe for disaster Survivor-wise, and he'll be voted off soon, but that's why he's the star of the show.

Rupert is leaving soon. MB had 6 episodes to show his best and most entertaining character. Otherwise, we'd just be watching a bunch of people sitting around doing nothing, like Big Brother (ha!).Think about it -- if rumors are true that the final four includes Andrew or Tijuana, Osten, Lil, and Darrah, think how DULL DULL DULL the final couple of episodes will be. If Rupert gets voted off, they can make a couple episodes with Jon and Sandra as the focus, but that'll be it. They get voted off, no storyline left. I think they're just highlighting the interesting people now because they'll be gone soon, and they have a bunch of boring nobodies at the end.

Rupert may be leaving soon. He is a huge threat to win 'The Whole Shebang'! But , without Rupert, this season would TOTALLY SUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Therefore, Rupert needs to be showcased to keep us interested!

I don't want to be too negative about Jenna - she did what she had to when things got difficult - but there was too much of a beauty contest tone to Survivor Amazon. I don't thenk anyone is too comfortable with beauty as a key characteristic of the ultimate survivor. Rupert is smart, strong, funny and a good guy. In addition, in terms of personal beauty, he is the "anti-Jenna". Certainly, MB would prefer to have people associate Ruper with survivor rather than Jenna.

I agree with Acawap. Rupert is an interesting character like the Robbfather was but unfortunately doesn't last until the end and so MB has to make the most of him while he remains. Michelle was guarded about her comments on Rupert which makes me wonder if he is next. Or not. I was sure he was going last week. And Trish seems to have it in for poor Rupert. Some feel Trish is the puppetmaster of the tribe. Maybe there is a figurative snake in addition to the literal one. Maybe not.

TDT seems to be changing and only Christa and Rupert are listed as trouble. Jon has been moved to probably safe and they appear to be predicting a Morgan immunity win.
