"NOT an emergency" |
In the next TAR they should forbid the use of the words "emergency" and "life or death". I'm sorry, a game show is NOT an emergency. People who get special consideration that way are taking away the effectiveness of these words from real, serious situations.

I really don't see an issue with it. I mean, don't people in regular situations, when it's an "important" scenario, the phrase "life or death" is an oft used expression? Plus, to the racers the game is priority, and I'm sure they aren't using the prhases deviously, and I think they just wanted to convey the importance of their situation, it may not be exactly a LITERAL "life or death" situation, but it does hold a sense of importance, and I highly doubt the show is really going to affect the way an airline or any travel company conducts business because the expression "life or death" is used a lot. I use the phrase, "or my life depends on it", I honestly don't think people think myself (and others who use the phrase) are really going to die if we don't get thing it was... well, unless it was an organ, but I haven't been in the market for one recently.

For foreign places I'm not so sure, especially when their English is imperfect and their knowledge of North American customs and language usage even less. Many years ago we had a party line phone. Two familes, streets apart, shared a line. It used to be quite common. Well, sometimes we'd be talking to someone and the people we shared with would come on and say it was an emergency. By law, you then had to hang up and let them call. After this happened a few times we got suspicious and picked up the phone a minute later. They were having a perfectly ordinary conversation. No emergency. After that we no longer believed them and refused to give up the line. Now, what if they'd had a real emergency? Ever heard the story of the boy who cried Wolf?
