I agree that there is a strong genetic component to extreme obesity. I think it is underestimated by the medical community and that promulgates the "fat people are lazy" idea.
I have had some pretty horrible eating habits (overeating, junk food, high fat, high sugar, etc.)and lack of exercise, but I have never gained more than about 15-20 lbs. (Not trying to rub it in!) When I see morbidly obese people it looks to me like they have the ability to gain an enormous amount of weight/fat in one area of the body, whereas most people gain it more evenly (maybe more in the hips, thighs, and lower abdomen for women). It seems like a genetic predisposition to me.
