What was the point of the whole DNA food grab? Or, to get to the heart of it, why did they use up about ten minutes showing people crawling all over the helix when there was absolutely no chance they were going to get anything they'd gathered?

Let's figure the odds here. If the lucky Lobster Tail rejected the money, it was going to go to the next person in line: same choice. And so it proceeds all the way through the group, until someone gives in and dumps them into PB&J land, or every last houseguest shows a noble heart. Sure. Thirteen Big Brother contestants, and they're all going to be noble and self-sacrificing. They've been recruiting from monasteries and convents this year.

They could have put caviar, Kobe beef, one-pound jars of saffron, and black truffles on that helix. It wouldn't have mattered. It was PB&J all the way, as soon as the box was opened. (I'm guessing there were three or four key-balls planted around the helix, so they wouldn't have to rely on someone getting the lobster tails: the first loaded ball pulled was the one used.)

If this is the kind of setup we're going to have for every food contest, Survivor will no longer be the most likely show to have a player die from malnutrition.

It's the blatantcy that gets to you after a while...

You are right about this, unless maybe a few decided against taking the money first. Then maybe they would feel like if they took it they might as well be out of the game. In all likelyhood someone was going to take the money.
