""Library" time with Frau Hexe"
Frau Hexe's "Library" time

<The camera is focused on MakeItStop and slowly pulls back and we see she is with Frau Hexe.>

Good evening everyone. Today we are with Frau Hexe, one of our newest members. Welcome Frau Hexe, may I call you Hexe? Why did you want to be interviewed here in your library?

Of course you can call me Hexe. Actually, this place is my favorite place, not only becaue I'm surrounded in books, smoke, mahogany, and liquor, but when I feel like it, I can escape into one of my secret passageways which lead to my wine cellars and other very secret, secret witchy places. I love a good secret passageway-- and I thought about conducting the interview in one of chambers, but I didn't think it was appropriate to take you back there. It's a little, well, scary, for the uninitiated. I wouldn't want to frighten you!

How did you find SB and why did you stay?

My partner actually found the boards, and she registered and started posting about two weeks before I joined. She had been lurking for awhile and had made me read posts from time to time. So when she joined, she just kept raving about how great it was here, and she thought I should sign up. I thought about it (for about two seconds) and then I saw this "Does anybody speak German" thread, and I had to dive in. I have to say I was a little intimidated at first--you see, I was reading the spoiler boards a lot. Of course, I didn't know that's where all the intellectual masturbation takes place. Then I discovered Bashers, and then Off-topic, and then everything else, and everyone was so incredibly nice, and funny, and smart and articulate that I had to stay because everyone seemed far more like me than I had imagined. I also have also been pretty ashamed for some time that I have an affinity for reality TV, and even when I tried to intellectualize it, I still couldn't bring myself to talk about these shows with other people in RL much. So, this was a place I could finally be the real Frau Hexe--the lover/hater of reality television that I am.

Your screen name is German and I believe it means Ms. Witch. How did you come up with this screen name?

I speak German--actually got my second B.A. in it--and I'm a witch. As a writer, it's a little game of mine to come up with strange characters, and for some reason I came up with this Frau Hexe person--a sort of characature of me. I imagined her as this kind of dominatrix-witch with a thick German accent--somebody who wears lots of leather who you don't wanna f*** with. So when it came time to pick a screen name, that popped into my head, and it just seemed right. It's this side of me not many people get to see. Keep in mind of course that I am not a dominatrix, and don't have a German accent, and well--I'm not really *that* kind of witch either. But it still fits. Just believe me.

So you're a witch. How did you get interested in this?

I grew up Southern-Baptist in this little redneck town, and I didn't believe one bit of what they told me in church. My step-dad was just such a bible thumper, I had no choice but to put on my little Sunday frocks and memorize my Bible verses all the while thinking, "Where do I fit into all this?" When my mom divorced my step-dad when I was a teenager, she let me explore any type of religion I wanted, so I learned a lot about Buddhism and other eastern religions, and I started lighting candles and meditating to focus my intent on them, learning how to read tarot cards and runes, etc., and one day after several years of doing this, I found out all the things I had been doing had a name. So, about nine years ago, I started reading up on Wicca, and discovered that I really connected with it. I completely immersed myself in it. I really appreciated that it honored women so much, and that I could be pretty much anything I wanted as long as I didn't hurt anyone in the process. That resonates with me. I also liked that I didn't have to belong to any real church or even a coven--I'm what's called a "solitary practitioner," which to this crowd is just going to sound bad.

Hmmmm, so a witch can do pretty much anything she wants... lets talk later.

<cackles wildly> So, you know, I could really use a cigarette after all of this self-revelation. It's starting to feel a little like therapy, and I just got rid of that old leather couch.

OK, why don't we go for a walk? The redwood trees here are magnificient.

You've made it pretty clear that you are interested in Astrology, and you seem quite knowledgable in this area. How did you get interested in Astrology?

Ah, appearances are deceiving, aren't they? I am interested in astrology -- you're right about that, but I'm not sure how much I *really* know about it. I guess I know more than the average Joe, but compared to people like OutFrontGirl, I know practically nothing. You see, it only seems like I know what I'm talking about because I know the terms, and I USED to know quite a lot more, but the brain gets rusty.

I guess I became interested in astrology when I was a teenager and started getting into all that occulty type stuff. Then about seven years ago, I met and was befriended by a Vedic astrologer (Vedic astrology is Hindu astrology and quite different from Western astrology), and he taught me quite a lot just by telling me about my chart. But then, he turned out to be REALLY weird (I mean the guy would knock on my door at 1 am and just sit in the middle of my living room with his eyes closed stroking my cat and trying to tell me that our charts were sooo compatible, as he drew invisible symbols in the air with his hands--ugh), so I started avoiding him and stopped learning, and hence, my knowledge of astrology is now far more limited. Talking to OFG is making me brush up on my skills though, and helping me purge those terrible images I have of astrologers. I bet she doesn't even know how much she's helped me get over that. I'm gonna get all choked up, but I just have to thank her. <waves to OFG>

You're a Virgo. And, BTW, so am I. Do you think you're a typical Virgo? And, if so, which Virgo traits do you possess?

Actually, I have a hard time identifying myself as a Virgo sometimes because my former astrologer friend considered me a Leo, which I really began to identify with, but now that I've shaken all that off, I'm coming to terms with the fact that I'm truly a Virgo in most ways. I'm pretty reserved and sometimes shy IRL, when I first meet people especially. It takes awhile to get to know me. People think I'm always so grounded and focused, but inside I'm pretty self-conscious and when it comes right down to it, a raving lunatic. I am a perfectionist when it comes to most of my work and I tend to be detail-oriented. I've also always been a self-starter, and VERY analytical--overly analytical--to the point that I drive myself nuts with it. And the worst of it all: I'm super critical. My partner will tell you I'm the official idea-shooter-downer in our relationship, which I think is a bit of an exageration, but I do tend to criticize. I can't help it. So you're a Virgo too? Are you just as neurotic as I am?

Of course, dear. <snicker>
I know you have a degree in English and that you are a teacher. Do you teach English or some other subject? And have you always been a teacher or have you had other careers?

Yep, I've almost got two degrees in English, in fact. I got my B.A. in English with an emphasis in Creative Writing and Linguistics, and I'm about six months from my MA in Teaching Writing with an emphasis in Teaching English as a Second Language. So, I do teach English--oh do I teach English. Since I'm currently still a graduate student, I'm just a sad, part-time lecturer teaching first-year composition--you know the writing class everybody has to take in college, but everybody hates? That one. I also have been teaching at an international english language institute this year--I teach writing to international students. It's pretty fun. My only career before this was that of a career student. I've sold my soul to academia.

You've mentioned that you are a gardener. Are you a vegetable or ornamental gardener?

Ah, one of my favorite subjects. I love to garden, both vegetables and flowers. My little scribbler and I started renting this house about a year and a half ago with a nice big yard, but the yard had previously been a big doggie play pen, so we got permission to landscape and just went absolutely crazy. We had a little salad garden this year with lots of lettuce and lemon cucumbers and, well, the cherry tomatoes didn't make it, but we had lots of cucumbers! I'm most proud of my flowers though--I've completely transformed our yard into a sanctuary. I love it. I've actually always gardened. My grandmother got me into it as a little girl, and we always gardened together. When I moved away, she sent seeds with me, and I kept it up, even when I had to container garden on a tiny patio. You see, it's important for Virgos to stay close to the earth--to get their fingers dirty once in awhile. It keeps us grounded.

Do you have any other hobbies and if so, what are they?

Oh boy do I--I'm a writer. I write mostly non-fiction prose and some short-story character-sketch stuff, but I also really enjoy writing poetry. I'm a photographer--mostly black and white--it's a huge passion of mine. I make candles and infused oils, and crochet a bit. I absolutely love to cook and bake. I love playing with my cats, spending time with my sweetie. Hmm..what else. I don't know, but I know there's more. Oh, I'm a sort of an infant at it, but I've really gotten into wine tasting over the past few years, and I'm learning more and more.

Is there anything else you'd like to tell us?

Do you really want to know more?

Probably not.

Well here we are. I thought I'd bring you to Fern Canyon. What do you think?

The fern wall is really cool, and this seems like an appropriate place to end our interview. I'd like to thank our guest, Frau Hexe, for taking the time to do this interview. And, I'd like to say that I'm really glad you joined our community. Now, let's go check out the ferns!
