I'll never forget this day...I was in Rotterdam for a UN trade & transport working group meeting, in the Beurs World Trade Center there, and we were quickly evacuated soon after it was realized that the WTC was indeed under attack. I reached the hotel room only to see them begin tumbling down, the most horrific sight I've ever seen on the screen, realizing how many people were still inside.
The following Friday, there was 5 minutes of silence throughout Europe. Rotterdam is one of the busiest cities in the world, and it was shocking to see every car stopped, every counter temporarily ceasing business, every pedestrian standing instead of in a fast walk. Never has silence ever sounded so eerie in my life, broken only by the peal of church bells ringing across the city and into the sky.
