Ebert once said, "If you disagree with something I write, tell me so, argue
with me, correct me--but don't tell me to shut up. That's not the American way."
I tried it. The character's swarmy know-nothing-and-don't-care nature may be perfect for a sports talk show host, but it doesn't work for sympathy even when you try to excuse it with a recent loss. He needs egos which not only pop his regularly, but play off him and top him when he isn't expecting it. Basically, they want Frasier with a mourning Bulldog as the star. And they're not going to get it.
I also checked out The New Normal and was bored by it. The characters are too cliche', the script hasn't had an original thought yet, and if I wanted to watch happy proud bigots reveling in their ignorance while trying to destroy everyone around them by inflicting their views, the GOP convention did just wrap up. And it was much funnier.
