Devils on Horseback meatballs with grape jelly buffalo wings brisket on Hawaiian rolls obligatory cheese dip bruschetta obligatory cheese ball bbq little smokies stuffed 'shrooms I always make a Caramel Apple Cheesecake for dessert and have been told it's expected so I don't need sweets.

Dog Biscuits:1 lb. ground beef 1 lb. ground sausage 1 lb. Velveta Cook the beef and sausage and drain. Toss in the Velveta and mix until melted. Spread on Rye squares (those little party rye squares). We always make them in advance and then freeze them and then heat them up. I always have an obligatory veggie tray. Tis the season.

LAST EDITED ON 01-15-09 AT 01:32 PM (EST)Chop up a loaf of baloney, put toothpicks in the pieces, and tell the guests that it's goose pate'. Chop up a loaf of salami, put toothpicks in the pieces, and tell the guests that it's smoked venison back strap. Chop up a loaf of Velveeta, put toothpicks in the pieces, and tell the guests that it's yellow Galician Cheese, aged in Spanish caves. (you have to add blue streaks with a felt tip pen for this dish) Seeing as how you don't live in Alabama, you might not get away with it. However, my friends are in awe of my culinary talents. (BTW, on a more serious note, around here sausage balls are de rigueur at Superbowl parties. Ground sausage, bisquit crumbs, cheese, rolled into balls and baked to golden brown. Or bought in frozen food section of supermarket).

LAST EDITED ON 01-15-09 AT 01:44 PM (EST) When we were young, my brother, ever the adventurous eater, ordered those thinking they were some kind of real oyster.
He ate them, and professed to like them. No one had the heart to tell him (or me for that matter) what they really were. We found out much later. He was pretty frisky after that though, as I remember. And now that you mention it, those fried testicles did resemble sausage balls. I may rename sausage balls "Rocky Mountain Oysters", and see what hilarity ensues. And they will have toothpicks stuck thru them. (Ouch).

Artichoke Dip * 1 cup mayonnaise * 1 cup grated Parmesan cheese (you can even use the kind that comes in the can type container) * 1 can (14 ounces) artichoke hearts, drained and chopped * dash garlic powder (I don't use this) * 2 tablespoons finely chopped green onion * 1 to 2 tablespoons chopped ripe tomato Combine mayonnaise, Parmesan cheese, artichokes, and garlic powder; blend well. Spread mixture in a 9-inch pie plate. Bake at 350° for about 25 minutes, or until lightly browned. Garnish with the green onion and chopped tomato. Serve with assorted crackers or tortilla chips. You're house will smell a bit like foot cheese - but it's worth it. Monkey Bread Canned biscuits Melted butter (I use unsalted) 1 stick Cinnamon - can't remember - try a teaspoon or so Sugar (or Splenda) - can't remember - try 1/2 cup or so (you can always mix up a bit more) Melt butter. Mix cinnamon & sugar in a plastic bag. Cut each biscuit into 6 pieces. Drop a few biscuit pieces at a time into the sugar mixture and shake - until you have them all coated. Place sugar biscuit pieces in an oiled (or spray pam'd) tube pan - or Bundt pan. Pour melted butter over these. Bake at about 350 - biscuits will rise and brown. Remove & let sit/cool for at least 15 minutes (this will allow all the butter to absorb into the biscuits - if you dump it too soon, you'll get burned by hot butter - don't ask me how I know this). Place plate over pan; invert. Just pinch off bites and enjoy! Will you be mine? Ok, get in line behind Agman..... BTW, I'm copying all these ideas down for next Christmas and no one can stop me.........

Here's a simple cream cheese dip/spread:2 pkg cream cheese 1 can sweet corn (drained) 1 can rotel (drained) 1 pkg ranch seasoning mix together. If you let it sit over night it becomes more firm, it doesn't usually last that long in my house though. Serve with assorted crackers, tortilla chips, etc.

I made beef bruschetta for our New Year's Eve All-Snack Extravaganza. They were a very big hit, and they're pretty easy. You can do the majority of it ahead of time and just assemble them day-of. Get a flank steak. Rub it with salt, pepper, garlic, a little cumin, a little dried mustard, etc. Really, it's fine with just salt/pepper/garlic, you can use the cumin/mustard/chili powder/whatever spices you like. Wrap the steak up in plastic wrap and let it sit in the fridge. Overnight is best. Fire up the grill and grill the flank steak until it's the way you like it cooked. Me, I like it medium rare leaning toward rare. Take it off the grill and let it rest. (If you don't want to grill, you can broil it.) Slice it into very thin slices. You can put it away at this point if you're doing it the day before. The beef is best served at room temperature so let it warm up a little when you take it out to assemble. Get a baguette and slice it into half-inch thick slices, on a slight bias so they're just a bit oblong. Brush with olive oil and sprinkle with a bit of salt and toast in the oven until they're just barely starting to turn brown. Get a store-bought tub of garlic cheese spread. (My grocery store had Alouette brand on sale buy-one-get-one-free which was ideal. There's also a brand called Rondele or something like that.) To assemble, spread a slice of bread with some of the garlic cheese spread. Top with a slice of flank steak. Drizzle with a little balsamic vinegar. Enjoy. For the balsamic vinegar you can reduce it to a syrup to make it a little sweeter if you don't like the tang or bite of it straight up. Just put it in a saucepan and boil it until it reduces by half (or until it's the consistency of cough syrup.) Looks fancy but it's SO easy and tastes very decadent and delicious. Winter wonderland a la Arkie!

Between you and Tummy, you are making the time pass from now to dinner very difficult.Your sandwich made me think of this recipe. Balsamic Onion Marmalade 1T Peanut oil 4 Red onions thinly sliced (8 cups) 1/3 cup Sugar 2/3 cup Balsamic Vinegar Kosher salt Pepper Heat oil in skillet over med heat. Add onions, salt and pepper. Cook stirring occasionally til onions are soft. Add sugar and reduce heat to med-low. Cook stirring frequently until onions appear dry. About 10 minutes. Add vinegar. Reduce heat to low and cook stirring occasionally until onions are soft and dry. About 1 hour. Let cool and store in a glass jar. It will keep for several weeks, refridgerated. This marmalade is good on so many things!

LAST EDITED ON 01-16-09 AT 09:20 AM (EST)I use balsamic carmelized onions - very similar to that on some steak sandwiches I used to do. Toasted slice of bread piled with thin sliced steak, carmelized onions, toasted slice of bread, oven roasted garlic portabello cap, feta cheese and field greens. Then pour a little red wine vinegrette and top with toasted bread. Agman took me to the islands

Wow, Tummy, you must be the queen of appetizers. I doing the appetizer leg of a progressive dinner this weekend and this is one that I was going to do:Spinach Balls (insert ribald joke here) 2 cups seasoned bread stuffing 1/4 cup grated parmesan 1/4 cup chopped green onions 3 cloves minced garlic 1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg 1 package of frozen chopped spinach (10 oz.), thawed and squeezed dry 1/4-1/3 cup vegetable or chicken stock 2 tablespoons butter, melted salt and pepper to taste 2 egg whites, slightly beaten Combine first 5 ingredients, then mix in spinach, stock and butter, season with salt and pepper. Mix in egg whites. Shape into 24 balls. Bake on greased cookie sheet at 350 for about 15 minutes or until nice and brown. Serve with mustard sauce: 3/4 cups of sour cream, 1/4 cup dijon mustard, 1 tablespoon chopped chives, (1 tablespoon honey, if desired). I made them once before with all low-fat substitutions and they were a big hit.

I know you said no sweets, but OMG this is sofa king good and I am required to take it everywhere: Fruit Salsa and Cinnamon Chips. One of the most top-rated recipes on Allrecipes (over 1,700 reviews). 2 kiwis, peeled and diced 2 Golden Delicious apples - peeled, cored and diced 8 ounces raspberries 1 pound strawberries 2 tablespoons white sugar 1 tablespoon brown sugar 3 tablespoons fruit preserves, any flavor (I usually use Orange Marmalade) 10 (10 inch) flour tortillas butter flavored cooking spray 2 cups cinnamon sugar DIRECTIONS In a large bowl, thoroughly mix kiwis, Golden Delicious apples, raspberries, strawberries, white sugar, brown sugar and fruit preserves. Cover and chill in the refrigerator at least 15 minutes.
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Coat one side of each flour tortilla with butter flavored cooking spray. Cut into wedges and arrange in a single layer on a large baking sheet. Sprinkle wedges with desired amount of cinnamon sugar. Spray again with cooking spray. (I find it easier to spray a whole tortilla on both sides, cut it up, and shake the triangles in a bag of cinnamon and sugar.) Bake in the preheated oven 8 to 10 minutes. Repeat with any remaining tortilla wedges. Allow to cool approximately 15 minutes. Serve with chilled fruit mixture. (I also recommend doubling the amount of chips you make. You can make the whole thing the night before and store the chips in those big freezer bags.) Perpetual *headbutt* compliments of Rolly.

Lots of good ideas! I've bookmarked this thread also. When I'm having a Super Bowl party, I like to make an appetizer from each of the home teams. Of course Buffalo is the easiest (wings), for New England, I made shrimp etc. Here is a really funky twist on water chestnuts wrapped in bacon - use bananas instead. People really love it or are freaked out. The reactions are great! Bacon and Banana Kebabs with mustard-mayo 2 T. fresh lemon juice 1 T. Dijon mustard 2 large firm ripe bananas 8 slices bacon Soak bamboo skewers for 30 minutes. In a bowl whisk the lemon juice, mustard and salt and pepper to taste. Cut bananas crosswise diagonally into 8 pieces and add to marinade. Stir to cover. Let marinate for 15 minutes, stir occasionally. Cook the bacon until it is cooked, but still limp. Cut each piece in half. Wrap bacon around banana and thread onto skewer. Broil or (grill) the kebabs about 4" from heat, turning them once, for 6-8 minutes, or until the bacon is crisp. They are yummy! Cheers to Tribe!

Yay! glad someone else like this as much as I do.I've got that in the fridge. The Buffalo Dip ready to put in the microwave - I did switch out the Ranch dressing for Bleu Cheese (I don't like Ranch). A few Bacon/Banana thingies to pop in the oven. And a Reuben dip that I forgot I used to make all the time. Rob requested it. I had forgotten all about it. I'll stick it here so I won't lose it again: Reuben Dip 1/2 lb of sliced Corned Beef - torn up 1 pk cream cheese 1 cup shredded swiss cheese 1 cup Sauerkraut - drained 1/2 cup sour cream 1 Tbl ketchup 1 Tbl brown spicy mustard Bake until hot and bubbly. Serve with cocktail rye bread. I also decided to do some ginger/brown sugar short ribs in the crockpot. The Caramel Apple Cheesecake is done. Beer is iced. Plastic cups and paper plates are out. Foam bricks ready to throw at the tv. Dollar spots marked on the betting sheet. Just need to jump in the shower and throw on some makeup and then claim my favorite throw before the crowd gets here. I don't have a team this year. I think most everyone showing up is Steeler fans so I will most likely be rooting for the Cards. I'm an underdog kind of girl when my team's not playing. Pour soy sauce over and sprinkle with brown sugar. Cook on low for about 8 hours. When I make this a meal I add baby carrots on top before sprinkling with the brown sugar and serve over rice. Everything was a huge hit. Prof's Buffalo Dip went over so well there's no left-overs *pout. And CTGirl's banana thingies were an either absolutely love'em or a squishyface I'm not sure thing - by the end of the night there were only 2 left so I ate them both . Everyone wanted all the recipes, so I consider that a great result.I have a little Rueben dip left and just a tad of the Mediterranean dip left (which I have bargained with Rob for) and enough ribs for dinner tonight after I throw some carrots in. Yay. And thanks to all that contributed to this thread. I plan on coming back here for upcoming parties and am going to try everything submitted here. No more appetizer rut thanks to y'all! *smooch Agman took me to the islands
