"NFL conference championship weekend..."
LAST EDITED ON 01-21-12 AT 09:27 PM (EST) The Wall Street Journal had an interesting story today about the relative rankings of the remaining teams on offense and defense. No team that was rated below 25th in either category has ever won the Super Bowl. In fact, only one team, the 2009 Saints, has won the Super Bowl and been rated 25th (in defense, in its case). SF was 26th in offense. NYG was 27th in defense. NE was 31st in defense. Thus, Baltimore, which was 3rd in defense and 15th in offense, has to win it all. Doesn't it? Perhaps not. The worst team to ever win the Super Bowl, by this measure, was the 2001 Patriots: 19th on offense and 24th on defense, for a total of 43. The second worst team was the 1980 LA Raiders, with a total of 27 (16th offense, 11th defense). Then come the 2009 Saints (1st offense, 25th defense), with a total of 26. So . . . if anyone except the Ravens wins this year's Super Bowl, there will be a new team in second behind the 2001 Pats. SF: 26+4=30. NE: 2+31=33. NYG: 8+27=35.
