You must be kidding. The Ference "hit" on Halpern had as much in common with the Rome, Paille or Chara hits that we've been discussing as a gerbil does with a man-eating tiger. Have you even seen the replays? Ference barely moved during the entire sequence. In basketball, the call would have been a charging foul on Halpern.
And Ference's "bird" to the Montreal fans made sense to me after the fans had cheered just moments earlier when he was plastered by Brian Gionta; then he got up and immediately scored. Maybe I'd feel differently if he bit someone else's finger instead of showing his own.
