As entertainment critic Roger
Ebert once said, "If you disagree with something I write, tell me so, argue
with me, correct me--but don't tell me to shut up. That's not the American way."
I will admit that I am cheering for the Canucks, but I just can't see how Rome gets 4 games in the Stanley Cup finals, and Chara got zero games of any sort for his hit on Paciorrety.
I will also acknowledge that I am in favour of fixing the game to protect the players. I think there are a bunch of rules that need to be changed: - put a standard set of cameras in every rink to watch the games. After each game have the NHL "police" review the footage and hand out penalties (fines are a start, but I would rather see suspensions) for "behind the play" slashes, cross-checks, etc. The stuff between Chara and Kessler last night was disrespectful of the game. (Note: the Australian Football League has a weekly tribunal to catch "behind the play" incidents, and it seems a smart way to help the referees) - It seems to me that shoulder pads have become weapons to other players. Is there a way to soften shoulder pads while still protecting the players wearing them?
It seems to me that more and more players are intentionally putting themselves in danger. And this thing whereby a player uses his body to shield the puck against the boards parctically invites hits from behind, especially when they turn at the last second. There has to be some onus on the players to protect themselves. Then again, shot-blocking is a standard part of the game. While heroic, the player are still opening the door for injuries. Not sure how to get people to start protecting themselves better.
