While Chara didn't intend the odd angle of the hit, which made his hit on Pacioretty so much more severe, even Bruins fans were surprised he wasn't suspended for the hit itself, as shown in the attached Boston Globe column:
Sometimes it feels like NHL penalties are allocated by lot. But they can't be. The game is too dangerous as it is without allowing players to hit other players in the head. It seems to me that we've had enough Mike Websters and Bob Proberts dying very young from post-concussion effects. These kinds of hits have to be eliminated.
