"American Idol -- The Final Round !!!!!"
LAST EDITED ON 09-04-02 AT 03:04 AM (EST)

I won't get into the songs, johnnycumlately started a thread about them, you can bash them there (and I have to say I absolutely agree with him on the quality of those "original songs"). This thread though is about the competition.

So without further ado, I will give my opinion on the performances and then open the floor to y'all

Kelly:

I believe she sang the two songs "A moment like this" and "Before your love" as well as anyone could possibly sing them. They are though, eleven o'clock numbers that are meant to be sung by a true and pure singer.

Kelly is that type of singer, without question, she is a great singer. Give her crappy material (as here) and she will make it special. Give her good material and she will fly.

As for "Respect". This song just brings out the very best in her. She plays with the audience, not just sings to them. She comes alive. She was great.

If I was to buy the single, with these two songs in it, I would like to listen to someone who can truly belt them, she can, he can't.

Justin:

In both of the "original songs" he sounded winded, out of breath. He was clearly trying too hard. I think he knew Kelly would out sing him and instead of focusing on sounding the best he could, with his range, he tried to beat her and it did not work.

Also, this songs were not meant to be all winks and smirks and lets play to the camera, you really have to focus and sing them.

He did not sound bad per se, but he sounded tired and outmatched, the songs beat him.

Now, if I have to hear him sing "Get Here" AGAIN, I will gag. He sings it well enough, but talk about tired, he has sang this song in EVERY stage of the competition, time to retire it Justin (you can just bet he will sing it on the A.I. album).

The Judges:

The two REAL judges here, Randy and Simon, both were in complete agreement that Kelly should win and they said so (hell, Randy did not even mention Justin). Paula as usual was non-committal.

The Pop Idol:

Will sounded terrible, he reminded me of Christina Christian's "Tweedy Bird" voice. Sooooo annoying.

And the song he sang was even worse than the ones Kelly and Justin sang.

The winner:

My choice: No question Kelly is the one. She has been the one from the very beginning.

My pick: I think she has it. I think Kelly will win it, I really do. I'm also crossing my fingers.

Aside from the abortion that was the "Big Band" show, this may have been the worst episode of the series.

Kelly clearly outshone Justin tonight tho. No question. Tonight was the best way to judge the difference between the two: Have them sing the same songs, and then compare. And there is no doubt that Kelly can do what Justin can't. Justin made both songs flat, dull, and boring. Kelly sang those songs. Justin had no problems hitting the notes, but Kelly did something with those notes, and that's the difference. Mrs. Malfoy said last night that it was basically the difference between Bryan McKnight and Celene Dion. And that's a huge gap. My one complaint about Kelly was that she seemed to be shouting "Respect" instead of singing it. But she also showed great judgement, knowing exactly when to hit the high notes, and when to get out before her voice gave out. Justin really tripped over the last few notes of the last song, you could tell he'd run out of gas.

Kudos to Randy for not even pandering to Justin by addressing his performances. Thank god this is almost over so Paula can fade back into semi-obscurity. And Simon was, well, Simon.

Oh, and "Pop Idol"? If this is the best England had to offer, I'd hate to hear the other contenders. RJ had to be sitting in the crowd thinking, "I shoulda gone to England".

If Kelly doesn't win, the fix is in.

Oh dear, I've re-dorkulated!

Justin, Justin, Justin. Hey man, your time is up.

Setting aside the fact that the original songs were looooong and uninspiring (how long were those songs, anyway?), Kelly showed, IMHO, that she can flat out sing. Justin was left in her wake in this "Anything you can do, I can do better" episode.

And I agree with Katem that Justin needs to stop singing "Get Here". I'm tired of it, and as soon as he started singing it last night, I was ready to go somewhere in the house and do anything but listen to this song one more time.

As for the bloke from the UK, I'm glad they like him in Europe.

Kelly should win this whole thing, although they have both won, as Kelly and Justin will be signing recording contracts. At this point they're playing for the title (and bragging rights) - the money is already in the bank.

We had recorded it, and as soon as they said what he was singing, we hit Fast Forward. There oughta be a statute of limitations on how often we can be beaten down by a song next time.

Means nothing. Remember, David Hasselhoff is a big pop star in Europe.

KELLY!!!!!
I thought she was incredabile!!!

Justin was Justin. He wasn't bad, but Kelly is clearly the shining star.

That Brit guy was just icky. Looked icky, sounded icky. Was that song a bad revamped Davey Jones tune? Because it sounded very 60's campy to me.

I agree that RJ could have beat that guy.

OMH! I made a similar comment to Ms. PackMan while Will was singing. It brought up images of striped pants, daisies, and Marcia Brady!

I think deaf-parents Jim could have beat out the Euro Pop Idol. He was gross and greasy and his lisp was irritating to the point that I wanted to reach through the screen and slap him! I knew he was bad when my fiance turned and asked: "Is that REALLY what they listen to in England?" - poor limeys...

Good call on his vocal similarity to Christina Christian, katem! I totally noticed that too... I wonder if that was why Simon was so fond of her? I kept wondering if this (Will Young) was what Simon had in mind every time he told contestants that he just didn't picture them as the American Idol?

If Justin's little teeny-bopper fans somehow manage to pull out a win for him, I think I'm going to hurl! Did you notice that when his singing started really getting bad, he'd reach down to the fans to get them screaming and drown out his mistakes?

Kelly was, as usual, wonderful (even though the songs were not my cup of tea). She has such a strong voice. I just love the fact that she's so down to earth about all this. Instead of acting like she deserves all this attention, she looks awed by it.

The Brit Twit was horrible! From he country that brought us The Beatles and the Stones-this is the best they have to offer now? Well, it looks like there won't be another British Invasion anytime soon.LOL

Edited because I forgot to say that TV Guide has an Editor's Choice article about the finale. In it, they mention that many peeps in England were outraged that Will won, including Simon. Simon actually went on to say that he liked the 2nd place guy better, so he turned him into a bigger star than Will.

I was actually in London visiting a friend when Pop Idol had its finale, and trust me Garreth (the runner-up, I think that's his name) was the Kelly of the show and Will was the RJ/Justin persona.

Everyone I talked to was in flames about Will winning. My friend, who had seen the show from the beginning, said that Garreth was clearly the best one from start.

Will basically won because he was cuter than Garreth.

I fear this happening to Kelly, but I just have a feeling she will pull it off. But women love to vote for their MALE idols, even if they have no talent.

GO KELLY !!!!!

Last night's episode WAS completely horrible....why did they not give the judges any time to 'judge' the contestants after each song? I thought that was a little stupid to even fix the box up for them if all they were going to do is say one lousy sentence or two. From listening to them, I would judge that those songs really don't seem to have been written in design for Kelly's voice...she made them her own, though. I thought Justin did a wonderful job compared to what we have seen of his ability before, and he has improved gradually throughout the whole show.

Kelly does and has deserved to win the whole way through, and I think this may turn into a contest of how quick Fox took in the votes, because I called Kelly's number about 2,000 times last night, and got a busy signal all of the time....I called Justin's once or twice to see how he was doing, and his was also busy.

Predictions - I've said that Kelly would get this thing stolen from her for a long time now, and I just have that odd gut feeling that Justin will win. I won't be completely pissed if he does, because it'd be nice to see the articles in a few months about how her album is outselling Justin's......but after thinking over every logical scenario, I say that Kelly squeaks by, mainly because.....I doubt many men will vote for Justin, and Justin doesn't have all of the females behind him, just mainly the preteens and teenage females....although that is the show's main demographic.....it's time that the good guy....err...girl won....go KEL!!!!

YES!!!!! We were all right....although my heart was pounding at about 9:50, during the long dramatic pause before the winner was announced....the show was set up to where, mainly in the performances, Kelly was the centerpiece of the show....what an emotional final performance, I think everyone in the Kodak center had tears rolling down their face.....I had to admit, I was welling up, as well as everyone in my household, a great cap-off to a decent show.....hopefully they won't ruin anything with AI2.

WOW, no kidding. The final two hour show was mediocre, but the reading of the winner to Kelly's final performance was a true tearjerker.

She kept her cool as much as she could, but the song was perfect for that moment, when she sings "I can't believe this is happening to me" is just the most perfect line for, well, "A moment like this".

Thank goodness she won, she has been the star from the beginning. Tamyra who? This little girl is going to be big, and she has the talent and charisma for it. Good for her !!!!!

Now, was that Natalie Cole congratulating her parents after she sang? Did Paula really give a clear opinion for once (She voted for Kelly)? Can Seacrest and Dunkleman be more insipid?

Anyway, really happy with this result, very happy with it. Congratulations to Kelly !!!!!

Loved the results, hated the last show. Two hours is one hour too long. In other words, too much Seacrest and Dunkleman.

So glad Kelly won, she seems a class act. Was moved to tears also with that last song.

I have one question though, was Nikki and Christina hit by a truck on the way to the show. Of all the girls in the top 10 I always thought those two were the most attractive, but WTH, both looked like they'd just rolled out of bed 2 min before the show.

Tamyra was great last night, I think she'll go farther than Justin. Ryan, well, poor thing. As for the others I see pop band in the future.

I was very happy with the results. The show ran too long for my taste, but the second hour was handled pretty well - a good mix of songs, and Justin didn't sing Get Here. I've been pulling for Kelly since the Top 30 show, and I'm glad see she was able to keep it all together over several grueling weeks of practice and performances.

A few comments about the show:

Randy looked like Huggy Bear with that hat.

Simon needs to be back for AI2 to make the show good. You've got to have someone that people love to hate, and anyone else would only be a bad copy.

Paula...please, just go away.

Nikki and Christina - what was up with the hair?

Jim - you proved once again why you did not belong in the top 10. At first I thought he wasn't even going to get a solo...then I wish he hadn't.

Duets - Justin and Tamyra were very good. I would like to hear more from them.

Kelly - Imagine how she will sound after she has taken time to let her voice rest. She is a a true star, and I hope she gets some good material to record. When she sings, I get goose bumps.

Overall show - I'm glad it was on this summer. I didn't really watch a lot of TV this summer, but this was one show I truly enjoyed. I would even tune in to watch a show dedicated to only the very bad auditions. Many of them had me laughing my butt off.

And one final note - it's Tah-MEE-kah!
