"Rankings - Top 4 - Rock Night"
This rankings post is a tough one for me. I've been sitting for a hour watching "Fringe" and in the back of my mind sorting through these performances trying to rank them and having trouble.

At the risk of 'copping out', what i keep coming back to is that there were three very good performances, and one that was blatently bad. Conveniently, i can list them in order.

Top 3
======
Adam - "Whole Lotta Love" - Yes, Zeppelin on Idol. Its about time. I will give Adam props for taking on this song and doing it justice. I think Slash was correct in suggesting that he stick with his lower register, which oddly Adam didn't do. To take a stab at Simon...how was this not 'copycat' and Allison was?

Allison - "Cry Baby" - Props to Allison for picking a less familiar Janis song, and also doing it justice. I think this performance was stellar. Vocals and pitch - to my ears - were perfect. Well done.

Kris - "Come Together" - The judges were correct, Kris put his on jazzy spin on the Beatles song, and I simply loved it. I don't know why the judges were depimping him, because like the above two, another perfect performance.

Yikes
========
Danny - "Dream On" - Oh, Danny. I was worried my hometown boy would have trouble tonight...but why the heck did you pick "Dream On"? Wow...why?! Dawg, that was bad. I hate saying it but it was.

Quick note on duets, but i'm not using them in my rankings. Kris and Danny impressed me. The harmonies were amazing, and I think Kris outsang Danny. But i liked their duet.

Adam and Allison bored me to tears. How they were able to take "Slow Ride" and make it boring still has me puzzled, but they did.

1. "RE: Rankings - Top 4 - Rock Night"
It really was about song choice tonight, wasn't it? If you weren't familiar with the songs, then you probably felt like a fish riding a bicycle. For me, this was a hot and cold night. Some were hot and some were just not....

ADAM - "Whole Lotta Love" - I had a whole lotta love for him tonight. That was wonderfully performed. I loved every second of it!

Allsion - "Cry Baby" - I agreed with the judges that a different song could have been better for her, but she was so good on this song.

Adam and Allison duet..... loved this too (see below).

----------------

Kris - "Come Together" - I wasn't feeling this song from him. I was singing along with him and then he'd change something up and I'd say "huh? why did he do that?" and not in a good way. Again, I think a different song would have been better. I liked that he was playing his guitar and his comments about playing next to Slash were just cute.

Danny - "Dream On" - you think you can sing Aerosmith?? DREAM ON! I kept thinking of a certain someone *coughMJcough* that sang this song last year. That last note was awful.....

I loved the Adam and Allison duet. Seeing them feed off one another made it a great performance. They had fun and it showed! Kris and Danny seemed like they were "stuck" together. Did anyone notice tension?? I did like their harmonies, and I thought Danny was better - Kris just seemed off tonight.

>seemed off tonight.

I may stand among the few, but I really liked the Kris/Danny duet. I really liked how they tried to showcase both different voices. I appreciated how on the first bit of harmony Danny sang the lower, less melodious part, while Kris sang the higher part; and they switched for the second bit of harmony.

However, I certainly felt the tension between the two, not to mention Kris' seemingly lack of happiness whatsoever (even after his solo performance his face was grim). I contemplated a few reasons for this with DH. This is my speculation for a glum Kris:

First, it is probably very difficult to have a duel guy duet with someone you have never collaborated with before (not to mention an Adam/Allison duet to compete with is just mean!). Second, the judges thought that he was the weaker of his duo. Upon watching the discussion (after the judges blahblah about the song) between Seacrest/Kris/Danny, I got the very distinct feeling that Danny was difficult in choosing the song (I could explain but I am already rambling!). Third, how crappy is it to be the only person to sing back to back songs?! This really seemed completely unfair to me. Fourth, after performing his solo song the judges, once again, didn't like his performance (which I personally liked, especially with the inclusion of the electric guitar...at least he tried to rock out!).

After all of this? I would feel jilted and cast off, too.

*bats eyes*

This probably belongs in a different thread somewhere, but I think it is relevant here...sorry if it isn't and give 'er the ax!

*smiles pretty*

yep. sica, you articulated what I was thinking as well. I ff'ed Simon's comments to Kris right after he said some bs about ice for lunch. It was blatant and I hate this show.

Kris was my favorite last night. First time all season somebody actually "ranks" above Adam for me.

I agree with you, too Sica.

Danny didn't give Kris any interplay in the duet. Harmony, yes. But otherwise he treated it like he was soloing.

He must feel Kris's hot breath on his neck.

And, ITA about Kris's having to sing right after he did the duet. Blatant depimpage by the show and Kris knew it.

Simon's already counting the $$ from future Adam albums (Simon gets a cut of all that 19 signs...remember his bragging to Anderson Cooper in the 60 Minutes interview? He's working his agenda, hard, very hard.

I'm with Glow. I'm not enjoying the show right now. But glad I was introduced to Adam and Kris via the show.

LAST EDITED ON 05-05-09 AT 10:44 PM (EST)

1) Whole Lotta Love-I'm still giggling.
2) Slow Ride- a little slow but fun
3) Cry, Baby- good, probably wrong song, but still well sung.
4) Come Together- Maybe it's just because I like Kris, but I liked this. I love the Beatles version and this didn't offend me. However, I have learned not to watch Kris when he sings! Try just listening and see if it's any better.
5) Renegade- Pitchy from both, I agree w/ Kara, I didn't think they could hear themselves. I couldn't hear Danny and Kris singing together, all I could hear were the backup singers. Sound mixer had his hands full.
6) judges throwing certain contestants under the bus, then backing up and running over them again. Giant Boo.
7) And last/least, Dream on. Offensive on too many levels to waste anymore time on. You know it's bad when Paula sits down during what's supposed to be your glory note.

5. "RE: Rankings - Top 4 - Rock Night"
Clear rankings here: Adam and Allison, then Danny and Kris. Apt pairings.

All of these songs come from my generation of rock, and I've heard them (and played two of these) many a time.

Adam got it way, way down inside with his performance. Dig it.

Allison does have a Janis voice, and while she isn't Janis, she's the closest modern incarnation I've heard in a long time. Let it all out, gal.

Danny and Kris both strike me as pretenders, out of their league in rock's roots. Their duet was 'harmonic', I suppose, but the pitch tone was asynch'd, like an axe with the octave and fifths slightly out of tune. Tuned out, man.

Prediction? Kris is next out.

6. "RE: Rankings - Top 4 - Rock Night"
1) Adam - He's still far and away the best.

2) Allison - I liked this performance and don't get the judges hate. Why in the world would they not want her in the finals?

3) Kris - I thought he did a good job with an iconic song. Not his best, but not terrible.

4) Alexis - My memories of her are better than Gokey's performance.

5) Danny - He had his moments, but overall he sucked. I loved how Slash set him up by saying he has to pull off the scream. I think he's not a Danny fan and set him up knowing that scream wasn't going to work. Thanks, Slash.

As for the duets, they were a study in contrasts. Kris and Danny clearly do not like each other. There was no connection, no chemistry, no interest in working together on this song at all. Allison and Adam, however, fed off each other and pushed each other to be better. The hug at the end sealed it - they do like each other and that made all the difference. Well, and they're both better singers than Danny and Kris.

7. "RE: Rankings - Top 4 - Rock Night"
1 - Adam in a landslide. What a great performance of such a vocally challenging song! I don't think it was 'copycat' at all - even though you could definitely hear shades of Plant in there at times. I thought it was an original take on a classic, but still close enough to the original version so Zeppelin fans wouldn't be offended. Great job, Adam!

2 - Allison. Good vocals, but why this song? It's one of Joplin's most boring songs and I totally agreed with Simon that she could've -and should've - picked something else.

3 - Kris. Only because Danny made the mistake of doing Aerosmith. On the plus side, he didn't totally destroy a Beatles song, although he came close in a few places. We already knew he was out of his element; I wish he hadn't looked like he knew it so much, though. Enough confidence can sometimes cover a multitude of sins.

4 - Danny. Sigh. Aerosmith would've been challenging for a rock-oriented performer (not Adam, of course!), so Danny shouldn't even have attempted this. (And, yes, it was easy to tell that Slash thought the same thing.) It was just awful, from the ridiculous 'doot-doos' that absolutely didn't belong in an Aerosmith song, to the horrendous last scream that made me cover my ears and pray for mercy. Oh well. It looks like it's finally time to see Danny in the bottom 3.

As for the duets - I loved "Slow Ride" the best, even though I really wasn't impressed by Allison's part. She gave it her best, though, and it was okay - but, frankly, Adam was the one that made it great. I love how he toned it down so he wouldn't overshadow her; unfortunately, his professional skills still stood out the most.

As for 'Renegade', one of my favorite Styx songs ever (not that there's many of those, but still...) - I personally think Kris could've done this one better if he'd done it alone. Danny's vocals are not cut out for this kind of music and he made me cringe several times. He completely overshadowed Kris who, even though he was definitely pitchy, still sounded better to me on this particular song. (And I'm much more of a Danny fan but, as a diehard rock fan, have to be honest here.)

meh. So much potential. So much letdown.

Kris - LOVED it.
Adam - I wasn't in love with it.
Danny - he looked hot and I'm shallow. The wail at the end was terrible and I hated the way he said "true".

Remember Michael Johns? I sure do.

Allison - that should have, in my opinion, been better. I think that about her performances every week. That's why she ranks 4th for me.

The duets were crappy. Kris and Danny's was better.

okay this nite was interesting...

1. Adam-Oh my heck that was awesome. It's not as good as original but pretty close and I loved his look and his billy idol sneer..I loved that he did the last part WOMAN.... everyone thought he was done.

2. Kris-I liked this. TPTB are pushing hard for a AAD final 3 so they threw him under the bus. I liked that he played the guitar

3. Allison-meh. I'm so glad Simon at least said it was karaoke. I might be biased bc I'm no Joplin fan.. And Paula, sorry Jenna from 30 Rock has already been cast in the "biopic"

4. Danny-omh who freakin wears a pin striped vest and pants to sing an Aerosmith song...and Kara plz go home YOu should have done more Early stuff? Dream on was from 1973 and Cryin and the other one were from 90s. Go home, you useless hack, you.
That last note was just awful VFTW is now voting for him and for the reason that TPTB deserve him to win, I'm not that mad about it.

Duets

1. Kris and Danny-I loved this, esp. when they harmonized. I love this song (although Daughtry did it better) Again Simon and TPTB threw Kris under the bus by saying Danny was better and AA were a better duet

2. AA-FOGHAT? REALLY??????? of all the classic rock songs, you pick this awful song with nothing more than Slow ride...take it easy.. What about a real duet for a man and woman.. THe only thing good I can say about this was that it makes me want to see Dazed and Confused again for the umpteenth time. Love that movie, love the lead Jason London in that movie...he looks like and reminds me of a boy I once knew...

What would have been really cool was to have Slash actually up there jamming with the band. That being said:

1.Adam and Allison- best performance of the night.

2.Adam- What do you get when you cross Boy George, Fonzie, and Mike Score? Adam. I'll admit when a guy is good looking, but I just don't get the Adam love. Technically the best (as per usual) but I just didn't feel the authenticity, and I'd never, ever buy this garbage. But it's a singing contest, and he did the best of the solos.

3.Allison- I think she's remarkable every time she opens up her mouth and sings. It's great to see how big of strides she's made since the start. I think of all the contestants she has the biggest upside by a country mile. Five years from now she'll be the only one where there isn't a "Where are they now?" segment on VH1.

4.Danny- Hated the song choice. When I heard it was rock week the first song that came to mind for me for Danny was CCR's "Travelin Band". I think he would have wailed on it. As for what he did, a very talented train wreck.

5.Danny and Kris-harmony was good.. that's about all I have to say about it. Styx? Mr. Roboto has better harmonies, and The Grand Illusion would have fit better for their upcoming careers in the industry.

6.Kris- Ok, we know you're not a tough, macho guy. But how bad does it have to be when you take a Beetles song and make it seem a little too effeminate? Golly gee and shucks will only get you about 15 minutes.

14. "RE: Rankings - Top 4 - Rock Night"
Adam Lambert "whole lotta love" I thought he did a really good job and he's head and shoulders above everyone else right now.

Kris--Come together....I really liked this, I think he always does a good job

Allison: lukewarm. She was not the worst, but I wasn't overwhelmed either.

Danny Gokey: WTF was that....My ears are still ringing! I think he's overrated.

LAST EDITED ON 05-06-09 AT 11:03 AM (EST)

1. Adam solo. No one else on the show has his range or control.

2. Adam/Allison duet. It may not have been the most exciting song ever but I loved that they were interacting on stage. Cooperation and mutual benefit made it a lot better than it would be otherwise.

3. Allison solo. Maybe if I knew the original I'd be more down on this, but I always like her voice and I like her performance of this.

4. Kris solo. I usually like him more than most people do, but this one just didn't do it for me. I didn't feel the connection with the song that I usually get and I think he was more hidden by the guitar than it helping the performance.

5. Kris and that screaming guy duet. Choir boys put on a show. The only way they could be dirty enough for that song is if they dropped mud on them at the start of the song. I kinda felt like there was a line drawn down the middle of the stage like two kids that can't stand each other that have to share a room. I did like when they sang at the same time better than the solo parts but there was next to no chemistry during the duet.

6. That screaming guy solo. I hope your ears bleed when you play that back and try to convince yourself that last wailing thingy was genius.

28. "RE: Rankings - Top 4 - Rock Night"
I agree with pretty much everything you said, Snidge. I did think "Slow Ride" was a fun song for them to do, and they looked like they enjoyed it, too. And I HAVE heard the Janis Joplin song before, and she performed the hell out of it!

I feel so sorry for Kris. I HATE HATE HATE when Simon (and the others, too) compare one contestant to another. Judge each on their own merits, please, and let *US* decide who we like.

22. "RE: Rankings - Top 4 - Rock Night"
1. Danny and Kris duet: I personally loved Danny's vocals over Kris', who also messed up a line, and thought they did a great job harmonizing together that overshadowed their lack of feeding off each other.

2. Kris solo: I thought he did a nice job changing up the song enough to make it his. I did not love it...but thought it was better than the rest.

3. Adam solo: Good job, but to me this was his 2nd worst performance of the year which says alot about his talent. He did not get into this song as much as he has in past couple of months, so I was disappointed with it overall. Certainly sets bar high every week though.

4. Adam and Allison duet: They performed better as far as playing off each other better than Danny and Kris, but song was boring and repetitive and the ultimate safe song. Also, to me, Adam really showed how weak Allison's voice is (he would do this to many singers though).

5. Allison solo: I admit I do not like her voice, although I loved her last week for the first time. This song was SOOO boring...cry baby...reapeat over and over and over again. I wish I heard what many do in her voice. This is her style and she gave us that?! She does perform well but her singing is just average for me. Bye baby...REPEAT!

6. Danny solo: Really Danny? REALLY?! I thought this would be a difficult week for him, but I did not see that train wreck coming until it was too late. Better hope your fan base forgives you.
