Camp Wow She is Spunky!!!! or Camp Someone Please Beat Her with the Microphone Stand, Now. ? Simon thinks the viewing public can be divided into two equal groups, with 50% of the viewing public loving her and the other 50% finding her to be annoying. I am begining to think she is the clone spawn of Joan Rivers and Fran Drescher, the Nanny-- which obviously puts me in the latter group. In fact, I am looking forward to throwing her many surprise bashes this season.   Top

"Faith Gatewood" Faith Gatewood didn't make it because her stage presence was horrendous. Non-existent stage presence would have been better than what she had. She looked like she hated being up there and like she was in physical pain. Her voice was great, but she is not a performer at all. When she sang in the postman group I said to myself that hse was soooooo lucky that she was part of the group with Jaclyn and her mom. She should have gone home then becuase it was very, very clear that she does not belong on a stage. Got blog?   Top

I have used the word "spunk" several times to discribe her, and it isn't just her "spunk" that I like. It's her youth, her enthusiam, beauty, she's funny, and has a great voice. Then it's Simon's turn, and I think " oh he's really gonna let her have it now". And all Simon had was this lukewarm 50%, 50% thing. And then , she spoke!!!! From the early auditions, I certainly noticed her, and I liked her voice well enough. I didn't care for her in the first finals week, but the second was a stellar performance. Honestly, beyond chuckling a little at her over-the-top-ness, she hadn't really stood out all that much to me, at least not as a serious contender. However, seeing some of the comments on this thread is a bit enlightening. Perhaps I should choose a side? I hadn't given it much thought before, but I will firmly align myself with the "Love her" side of the coin based on what I read here. Let me explain why. Hating her? Perfectly acceptable, in my opinion. I completely understand. There have been fan favorites in seasons past that I just didn't get, and because of the overwhelming support they received, it pushed me more firmly toward the "hate" end of the spectrum. What really troubles me in this thread is three-fold, and all of it adds up to me feeling a bit protective of the girl. First, we are questioning her sexual promiscuity? Really? Do we really need to address the sexuality of a seventeen year old child to demonstrate how much we dislike her? That's sickening, it's a cop-out, it's cheap, and it should be beneath all of us. The first time she acts like a whore and we see it/hear of it, fine, fair game, but really, Sergeant Sargeant says, "...and I bet she is extremely friendly with the boys..." Why would you ever assume that? That's reprehensible, and I cannot believe you would say that about another woman in a forum that a lot of women populate. So easy to call a woman (or, in this case, a girl) a whore and be done with it, but it's extremely tacky and a deplorable low-blow in my eyes. Second, one of my criterion for supporting one of the American Idol contestants is grace in accepting compliments or criticisms, and an obvious consideration of advice from the judges. She blasts that one out of the park. She is listening to the feedback and applying the advice to her performance -- effectively -- in such a manner that belies her youth and inexperience. Dontgetmestarted said it ("showing that she was really trying to listen to and act on the 'advice' she had been given... that is a more mature stance than we have seen (at least in the past) from the older contestants.") and I have heard others say it, but not here, and a desire to be better - to improve - really elevates her in my opinion. Third, Mikalah, all throughout this thread, is faulted for the voting contingent who may or may not support her. Isn't it fair to say, though, that each contestant, in his or her own way, will pick up a following completely devoid of anything they do but sing and market themselves in a certain way? To fault Mikhala here is to also fault Bo and Constantine for appealing to the rocker crowd, Nadia for appealing to the hip,unique, younger set, Carrie for appealing to people who just want to see a boring, safe, but nice girl win, and Anwar for the older set who appreciate sweetness coupled with competency. Let's be realistic. It's not Mikhala's "fault" who decides to support her. And, while you might compare her with Fran Drescher or possibly even call her a Barbra-wannabe, she is certainly no Joan Rivers. Joan is a washed up old hag who delights in being mean and ugly and spiteful to anyone who crosses her path. Anyway, for those reasons, Mikhala has my support so long as she keeps heeding the advice, keeps improving, and keeps trying to temper her exhilerating, if not borderline annoying, personality. Well, in fairness, Lindsey and Mikalah are probably equally appalling as performers. Neither of them can sing, let's be completely frank about it. Nobody in this community could honestly tell me that they'd want to hear an entire record sung by either of them. The only thing distinguishing one from the other is that Lindsey is passably attractive and somewhat less annoying than an itchy kneecap inside a full-leg plaster cast, whereas Mikalah is at LEAST that annoying AND sausage-shaped into the bargain. The only thing I can say in her favour is that the hair and makeup people are doing a fantastic job with what she brings them to work with. On that basis, you're probably right -- Mikalah should have gone before Lindsey. I can only surmise that what I find annoying about Mikalah is endearing to a sufficient number of other poor misguid... uh, people that their votes are marginally keeping her in the contest over contestants like Lindsey who just don't give anybody anything to grab onto and get motivated about. Mikalah's not going to win the contest, obviously. It is only a matter of time before her run comes to an end. Really, there is not much competition for that bottom spot; only Nikko could realistically challenge her for it next week. The vast majority of the performers are in the middle of the pack and could come or go at any point if they slip a bad performance in. I expect we have a lot of bad performances to sit through before we see Bo win it over Nadia.   Top
