Ok, either the Megan fans are completely oblivious to the fact that she can't sing worth a damn, or AI has proven yet again that they have the final say in who actually stays or goes. Let's face it, without her (extremely annoying) presence, the balance would be 7 guys and 2 girls, and we can't have that, can we? Matt most certainly did not belong in the bottom 3, and even the judges would have to agree on that. And yet the one called a 'train wreck' by the judges didn't even get nominated? Which means we have to suffer through her screeching for at least another week (hopefully only another week). Sheez. I'm having horrible Tatiana flashbacks right now - i.e. The One That Would Not Go Away. Thank God for Adam. If it weren't for him, I just might have to quit watching this show.

mhdallas, let me introduce you to votefortheworst.comNow people were voting for the entertainingly bad before they got organized, but now a bunch of them actually get together and pick one entertainingly bad person to all vote like crazy for. Basically if the producers and judges are going to put the train wrecks on the show, why not make them have to live with those decisions. People tune in to watch the train wrecks, so those same people will often vote for the train wrecks. If the producers really wanted to derail VFTW (and all the people in the USA who are independently worsters) they would cast all really good singers for the show. They obviously do not want to do that. They want the ratings the train wrecks bring. Ratings mean money.

I think they limit it to the # of dancers that are remaining, per number used to call...... and I think you can then cast an additional set of votes via the internet, but I'm not sure.

I guess that makes a sick kind of sense; after all, it does all come down to the bottom line, doesn't it? It's just a shame that it could be at the expense of a really talented singer (such as Matt, if he ended up going home - although I agree wholeheartedly with Glow's assessment of that.)

I actually do like Megan, but her quirky does get derailed into train wreck of a performance pretty easily.Vocally I think she can do some really interesting things, but I'm not sure she really was cast for some potential she might have with the right vocal coaches, writers and producers. I think she was cast because they knew she was going to show up weird and unpolished. If she was the first person like this on AI it could be an oh they were just giving someone they see potential in a chance. That there are a few such people every single season it starts to be more of a what is the purpose of casting people that have no chance of performing well reliably on the big stage. While some can be the "anyone can be on idol" mythos (which at least keeps people coming out to the auditions in most places), I think it is because they know all to well that 12 technically brilliant performances every week isn't going to make a show with high ratings. That is why they had a really hard time selling the show to the networks in the beginning. They didn't see it as reality TV part where some people aren't cast to win, they are cast to be the entertainment along the way to someone they can hopefully market at least half of the time at the end. IMO, if it were just a singing competition it wouldn't get the rating the reality TV "it is a voting competition" show gets. But to get the voting competition show you gotta give people the performances they love to hate. Sure some people always flat out love the ones that are cast to be hated, or fail, or wreck. And they have to have some talent because just plain awful isn't entertaining. It is finding that balance of just enough talent with just enough entertainment value that makes the show a ratings draw.
Although I don't think they actually care that much about record sales and all that, they probably make a lot more from high ratings during the season than they could from any contract afterward. So the casting is going to be for what brings ratings. However, at least having a few people make some career for themselves keeps people coming back to the show and trying out.

LAST EDITED ON 03-27-09 AT 12:06 PM (EST)I like her, too, when she is "on". But we haven't seen that for awhile. And she was ill. I think she can deliver a great performance with the right song. But that says she won't win because the winner is supposed to reliably deliver performances in many genres. So, in that regard, I also agree with Snidget's post about the producers filling the show with some they really want to win and some that are cannon fodder. Like Scott. Come on, does anyone here really think he can win? And Anoop. Maybe one or two people who post here think he can win, but really, versus the others there? I think Megan will have one really good performance with lots of judges' praise followed by a mediocre performance with so so coments that will get her booted. At 8th. (Like Haley). As for Matt's being in the bottom 3, I think singing order had a lot to do with that. It's going to be interesting to watch who the show shoves into singing early and who they have singing late the next three weeks. Singing placement, cannon fodder contestants, and judges's comments help orchestrate the boot. And this year we have the "save" in case they screw it up!

I completly agree with both you and Snidge. I don't think she can win this, I don't think anyone thought she could win this. But I do believe there are those of us out there not in the VFTW group that actually enjoy her. I disagree with being able to sing different genres, I like the ones like David Cook that take a song of a certain genre and make it there own or find a version that fits them. I'm hoping Megan can learn to do this. I think there's a market out there for her, but agree that she needs some training.
