"Rankings - Top 11 - Grand Ol' Opry Night"
LAST EDITED ON 03-18-09 AT 07:24 AM (EST)

I'm going to try and keep this brief, because simply i don't have a lot to say. But I will say one thing - I believe this was a truly pivotal night for Season 8 because it went against the so-called 'favorites' of the season. Let me try and explain.

I've been saying for the past couple weeks that I feel there are two dark horses that could emerge this season, and that happened tonight, but those two brought along a third.

These dark horses were the standouts tonight for me. In no particular order:

1) Allison - this is the rare 16 year-old contestant that has it all. Vocal skills, performance skills and a confidence that doesn't include the huge ego. This girl continues to amaze me.

2) Matt Giraud - one hell of an amazing performance. To take a Carrie Underwood song and give it completely new life and a new vibe is brilliant. And his vocals were stellar tonight.

3) Kris Allen - back when he made the top 12 i didn't know why, but the past two weeks have proven why - he can sing brilliantly and has an amazing range. Great great performance, and completely different than the last couple weeks. I love that.

The other "good" aspect tonight was Anoop. I'm glad he's back, but i think the other three above outshined him.

Now, that was the good. On the other hand, the 'favorites' stumbled.

Danny and Lil had a connection. They picked a song with a 'powerhouse chorus', but they shockingly couldn't sing the main verses worth a damn. The chorus is useless if you can't sing the rest of the song. They were very disappointing.

Adam Lambert. To quote Simon, 'What the hell was that?'. It was indulgent. it was overdone. Yikes.

All the rest - can't say much because i couldn't remember much at all.

In my opinion, "Opry Week" was "Darkhorse Week".

Yes, Ryan, we DO have a competition!

I completely agree with your #1 and #3 but I wasn't all that sold on Matt. I actually liked Anoop better. Overall a lousy night for country music fans like myself. Three guys sing girls'songs (has to be an Idol first) and "newest" guy song we heard was a 12 year old Garth Brooks song. Two Garth Brooks songs, 2 Martina McBride songs, 2 Carrie Underwood songs....Country music has some good up and coming male artists (Dierks Bentley, Brad Paisley, Blake Shelton, Jason Aldean) and it is unfortunate we only heard a couple old songs.

Are any of those new artists in the Grand Ole Opry. It wasn't just any country music but from artist in the Grand Ole Opry. Most likely so they could talk about Carrie being inducted.

ETA. It also depends on which artists will release their music for idol, and sometimes the producers make a list they have to pick from, so it may be the songs originally sung by women were stronger songs than the ones that were available that were originally sung by men. The "female" songs sung tonight didn't seem all that girly-girl, they felt more gender neutral even if originally recorded by a woman.

I do think some of the singing an opposite gender song is to prove you can make a song your own in a big way. Also remember a lot of the voting audience are female. Appealing to them by showing some tenderness may be much more important than proving your macho enough for the men that care how macho you are.

Good point - I wasn't thiking about that........but I did check and both Brad Paisley and Dierks Bently are Opry members - and they are both very good. It would have been nice to hear at least one song from one of those newer guys.

I would have loved to see somebody doing "Celebrity". That? would have been tremendously awesome.

Someday I'm gonna be famous
Do I have talent? well no
These days you don’t really need it
Thanks to reality shows
Can't wait to date a supermodel
Can’t wait to sue my dad
Can't wait to wreck a Ferrari
On my way to rehab

Cause when you’re a celebrity
It’s adios reality
You can act just like a fool
And people think you’re cool
Just cause your on T.V.

I rewatched a few of them and I have to change my rankings. Matt Giraud's performance was much better than I had originally thought.

1) Matt Giraud - Moved to 1 from 4. I am a sucker for good piano players - Billy Joel, Elton John - and Matt has the potential to be someone like that. I liked him. Excellent vocal. Could go further than I thought.

2) Anoop Desai - Moved to 2 from 1. This is why I was a fan during the early rounds. Excellent vocal, remade the song into something unique. I am so glad he's back.

3) Adam Lambert - Moved to 3 to 2. I was thinking "What the hell?" during but was totally into it by the end. Great unique performance. I know some will hate it, but I think that's due to personal taste more than a serious critique of his singing.

4) Alexis Grace - Moved to 4 to 5. After another spin, she was better than I had thought. I liked her more than Allison because she sang with a full understanding of the song.

5) Allison Iraheta - Moved to 5 from 3. Seriously, she's really 16? Incredible performance. Again. But I dropped her two spots after rewatching because I get the sense that she doesn't totally connect with the song. Which is not surprising for a 16 year old.

6) Kris Allen - He was totally trying to get the young girl vote with that song. I think it will work.

7) Danny Gokey - As the judges said, he sucked on the verses and was great on the chorus. I personally hate the message of the song. If you're about to be in accident, don't throw your hands up and pray, DRIVE THE DAMN CAR!

8) Lil Rounds - She's boring to me, but she can sing. She seemed really uncomfortable in her own skin tonight. And for the first time, I saw the ego other people have mentioned noticing with her.

9) Scott MacIntyre - I'm sorry, he's boring. I really want him to go home. In comparison to the other piano player, Matt, he is nothing.

10) Megan Joy - Poor Megan the sickie. She was good based on the fact she was in the hospital hours earlier.

11) Michael Sarver - Forgettable performance. I think he's in real trouble this week.

Seriously! I've never heard that song before and I was kind of appalled. Is that supposed to be uplifting? Because it pissed me off.

While I wouldn't say take your hands all the way off the wheel there actually are cases where you are better off letting go of the wheel rather than getting caught in the trap of over-correcting.

When the SUVs were flipping over when the tires blew I saw a report with a professional stunt driver. They rigged the tire so someone could remotely make it blow without the driver knowing when is going to happen.

He.Never.Flipped.

You could barely tell anything happened at all. They finally put a camera in the car to see what amazing thing he was doing, and he was letting go of the wheel. Now for the demo he did it like in the song with the hands way up in the air. The moral of the story was sometimes a lot less steering is better than just a little too much. The problem is knowing when to let the car's momentum take over and when you need to steer it out of something.

I want to let you know I'm sitting at work cracking up like an idiot over your post. I never considered the song in a literal manor, but reading your post and hearing the song in my head is making me laugh out loud.

And for the record, a lot of people in the south do find that song inspirational and uplifting, no matter how stupid the premise may be. Me? I'm not one of them.

It can also be taken in a not-literal, spiritual "let God do the steering of your life" sense, and THAT's why people find it inspirational and uplifting, and not the least bit stupid.

I'm going to throw in my interpretation of the song from a Christian perspective - Christians are to rely on Christ to pull them through difficult circumstances and let Him take control. So for me, the song is a metaphor about that. I don't want to debate religion - just putting this out there....

I understand that it's a metaphor. I just think there was probably a better one to choose than having it be about throwing your hands up when you're in a car accident with a baby in the back seat. JMO and all.

Yeah, I get that it's a metaphor, too. It's just a really bad metaphor in my opinion.

And the Bible also says God helps those who help themselves which makes more sense to me from a spiritual standpoint.

I stand corrected. But whether it's in the Bible or not, it was certainly taught in the Christian religion I was raised in. And it makes a lot more sense to me than the idea that you sit around and pray for God to fix everything.

Just sayin'.

This is the only performance I caught last night, and at first I had Simon's reaction - what the heck is this? But as he continued singing, I really did begin to enjoy it and by the end, I really liked his version. Wild, weird, and for me, strangely likeable.

1. Adam "Ring of Fire" - awesome. He's so far above the rest of these people. It's not even fair to rank him.

--giant gap--

2. Kris "To Make You Feel My Love" - so, so pretty. I was bummed when they first said he'd be without his guitar but it worked out really well. If it wasn't for Adam blowing my mind, he'd be leading by a mile.

--big gap--

3. Matt "So Small" - Lovely. This, ladies and gentlemen, is your pianist.
4. Anoop "You Were Always On My Mind" - nicely done, NoopDawg.

--big gap--

5. Allison "Blame It On Your Heart" - by default

-gap-

6. Megan "I Go Out Walkin After Midnight" - because I'm blinded by the pretty. She's sooooo pretty.
7. Danny "Jesus Take the Wheel" - if he'd have sounded like he did when he sang "fifty miles" through the whole song, I'd have been a puddle. Seriously. Listen to it again. Fourth line in the song. It didn't stick though and I was distracted by the weird coat.
8. Lil "Independence Day" - it was alright

--big gap--

9. Scott "Wild Angels" - I didn't hate it.
10. Sarver "Ain't Goin' Down Until the Sun Comes Up" - hated the song choice (don't hate the song)
11. Alexis "Jolene" - She lost me with the yowling in the middle and made me hate the whole performance.

1. Matt - He is my favorite.
2. Megan - I love her quirkyness. She is just stunningly beautiful.
3. Allison - Maybe not her best performance but still enjoyable.
4. Kris - I will admit that I didn't like him much in the top 36 but he has changed my mind. He really can sing. And he is really cute.
5. Danny - The first part was not great but I agree with Kara, the chorus was great.
6. Lil - Ok - so why do they tell her not to sing it country but put her r&b flavor in it and then they turn around & tell Adam to do the opposite?? Anyway, Lil was not bad but not great either.
7. Adam - The boy can sing, no question about that. My daughter says he scares her. I thought the nine inch nails comparison was spot on. Not really my type of music.
8. Alexis - I surprises me that I have her this low because I really like her. Not her best.
9. Scott - I don't much care for him but he did a fair job.
10. Michael - Wrong song for me. My son loved it. I think he is a goner.
11. Anoop - I just don't like him.

I've not read others yet

1. Adam-WOOT that was freakin' beautiful!! Randy Travis wanted to punch him, and he made Simon mad...Perfect

2. Anoop-this was very good, his best by far

3. Matt G-I really liked this by Matt...now if he is a better Gokey then why do we need Dead Wife contaminating my screen every week?

4. Scott-I actually really liked this by Scott and I'm warming to him, he made a funny with the moving the piano closer...I say stay behind the piano

5. Kris-he would be ranked higher if he didn't do those freakin things with his mouth, he did it on the last note last nite and it was off key imho. He is safe for a while with the tweeners and frauen

6. Allison-not her best but I really like Allison

7. Lil-I actually liked this from Lil and that she tried to go outside her box...Randy is a tool...sing the diva I Will
Always love you...if she had they would have said you need to go outside your safety zone... I hate this show

8. Michael--I think the South will save him. The song was too much but he had fun and I liked how he talked back to Simon

9. Megan-meh, she always sounds weird to me

10. Alexis-this was really bad, I don't get the Alexis love

11. Dead Wife Douchebag- just awful....it was a stupid song but his cult will love it.

ETA: Wall of Voodoo did the original cover version and Dilana and Adam covered their version.

Dilana Robichaux from Rock Star:Supernova...

From Article:

"If Lambert was directly influenced by Robichaux - the eventual runner-up on "Rock Star" - he didn't say so on Tuesday. In the clips of his meeting with Travis that aired Tuesday, he said, "I found a different version of it," but didn't specify whose version it was."

I hate when people say idiotic things like "If Lambert was directly influenced by Robichaux - the eventual runner-up on "Rock Star" - he didn't say so on Tuesday. In the clips of his meeting with Travis that aired Tuesday, he said, "I found a different version of it," but didn't specify whose version it was" like we saw the whole session with Randy Travis and Adam. Or maybe he figured nobody on his version of our planet would have any freaking clue who Dilana Robichaux is. Which would be pretty valid. What, like, 0.003% of America saw that show?

I think writers of the article were just trying to give credit where credit is due. He may or may not have been influenced by Dilana, but who really cares. I wanted to know who came up with the arrangement just out of curiosity....But if you listen to all three versions, it was totally "Adam" with a little Dilana and Wall of Voodoo thrown in there.

By the way, there is a complete list of all the artists who have covered this song on Wiki: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ring_of_Fire_(song)

But I will say this, I believe both artists have a knack of finding the right version of a song that fits them best while sticking with the genre of the night. Like them or not, that's the mark of a great artist.

Or a great Googler, not sure which.

(I just always get taken aback with odd comparisons or comparisons that are odd to me at least ~Cook/Daughtry drove me insane, I thought Michael Johns/Constantcrap was going to be the oddest I've ever read but Lambert/Cook pretty much took that cake away~ because I don't think Adam is like anybody that's ever been on this show.)

11. "RE: Rankings - Top 11 - Grand Ol' Opry Night"
1. Anoop "You Were Always On My Mind"

Thanks for getting back to the singing voice I know you have. Don't let the trying to dance on the stage get in the way of your voice.

2. Adam "Ring of Fire"

If you were from UNC you'd be #1, it's March Madness season and well that means certain sacrifices.

Not only did that have all the entertainment of a Normund Gentle act but it had the range, phrasing and control to back it up. Good for finding an arrangement that was you, and was really a song that was from the genre.

3. Allison "Blame It On Your Heart"

Maybe I drank some of the koolaid she dyed her hair with, but I love this girl. She's another one that wants to be who she is and it is nice to see a 16 year old that can sing that hasn't been stage mothered into a robot.

--big gap--

4. Sarver "Ain't Goin' Down Until the Sun Comes Up"

Song choice amuses me. I actually kinda like his voice and this amused me. Needed to be a bit more manic in the performance, but heck if you know you are fodder you might as well have some darn fun for as long as you last.

5. Scott "Wild Angels"

Boring, but nothing about it I hated, so you end up here.

6. Megan "I Go Out Walkin After Midnight"

Well I'll forgive the phelmy notes because you actually did look like you were going to need an IV right on the stage as the final credit rolled.

7. Lil "Independence Day"

Props for not doing the obvious Whitney Houston song. Do.Not.Listen.To.Randy. Now if you could just find some originality and let a couple of the chips short out so you aren't quite the robot up there you'll move up my list.

8. Kris "To Make You Feel My Love"

Monkey faced imitation of Archuleta's lizard faces just kill the performance for me and the voice is too bland to rank you any higher than this.

9. Matt "So Small"

I just don't get the Matt love. But then I've never liked any of the Timerlight clones we've had on the show. I rarely like Timberlake unless his voice is processed all to heck and back so his psuedo-clones really just don't do it for me.

10. Danny "Jesus Take the Wheel"

You can scream on pitch, you can't sing. Make a choice, perv or preacher. Don't try to be both. The only thing that saved you from the bottom is...

11. Alexis "Jolene"

All I could feel emotionally when she was singing this song was that Alexis was sure she was Jolene. She'd be the pretty and talented one stealing all the men in town. No one could take her man away from her.

Brooke smiled the whole time, but at least it was one of those simpering smiles like she knew it could happen to her but she was too nice to get mad about it.

You aren't dirty, you are a stuck up princess. I'd like you better if you'd just be who you are.

First of all, I just have to say that I wish these contestants would SHUT.UP. when the judges are critiquing them. It's not an interview, idiots. Just stand there and listen!

Also, I know next to nothing about country music, so I'm not sure how some of these compare to the originals.

1. Adam-- Yes, yes, yes! This is what I've been waiting for from him. He has shown that he has amazing stage presence, originality, and powerful vocals, but I felt that last night was the first time he really pulled all of those attributes together. I loved it. Watched it 5 times.

2. Kris-- Beautiful. Lovely vocals. I liked that he stayed seated the whole time and really focused on the song.

3. Anoop-- Wow. I wasn't expecting that. I've been really disappointed in Anoop this season, but that was great.

4. Matt-- Never heard the song before, but I liked this.

5. Megan-- I thought this was her best performance so far. I have nothing against tattoos, but I wish she would cover up the arm sometimes. With that beautiful dress and makeup, it just looked odd last night.

6. Allison-- Meh. It was good, but I wasn't blown away.

7. Michael-- Damn. I'm giving him props just for being able to sing all of those words and still being able to breathe.

8. Danny-- Beginning sucked, middle and end were better. I've started to sorta hate him.

9. Alexis-- The only other time I've heard this song was when Brooke White sang it. I liked that better than Alexis' version.

10. Lil-- SHUT!UP! You're not as awesome as you think you are, honey.

11. Scott-- God, he's so booooooooooooooring. Please go away. I did laugh at his joke about moving the piano closer to the audience though.

One thing I like about AI is that it exposes me to other peeps' opinions on music. My rankings will be very different from most, I suspect.

Last night was disappointing. There are a lot of good country songs, but every year, contestants seem to choose some real clunkers.

1. Anoop--Very nice. I'm glad he finally sang instead of going corny.

2. Kris--Very controlled performance. I think him singing with just a guitar would have been better.

3. Scott--A little slow at the beginning, but a great performance.

4. Allison--It wasn't as good as last week's, but a solid performance.

5. Megan--Being sick made her twist less, which was a good thing. Pretty impressive considering she looked like she was about to barf.

6. Matt--I don't get the Matt Love, but he was better than everyone below him.

7. Alexis--I liked her before last night. Something about that performance didn't sit right with me.

8. Danny--Predictable song choice. He suffered from the same problem as Lil--not enough chops to pull off the verses. That jacket was fugly.

9. Michael--Completely forgettable.

10. Lil--What a disappointment. If she doesn't have the chops to pull off a Martina McBride song, I don't see how she has any chance of winning this season.

11. Adam--He won't get voted off, but that was the biggest pile of crap I've ever seen on AI.

1. Adam - just brilliant. Head and shoulders above the others in talent and artistry. Goofy looking.

2. Allison - Very good, and very steady, what a vocalist.

3. Lil - Lillian can flat sing.

4. Meagan - Country is where she belongs, in this week top 5. Impressive.

5. Alexis - Jolene is a limiting song, there isn't a lot in that song to really get ahold of. It's a song Dolly wrote early in her career before she really learned how to write. But Alexis did it as well as could be done. And there is a little Dolly in her face and presence.

7. Matt - very good, not spectacular.

8. Anoop dog - not as impressive as others, but this performance won't get him kicked off.

8. Scott - Ehh!

9. danny - double Ehh!

10. Kris - thumbs down.

11. Michael- a personal favorite, and one would have thought that CW week would have been right up his musical alley. He blew it. Going first didn't help, but following anyone else that night wouldn't have helped him a bit. Also that song choice was just horrible and really clashed with the songs the others picked.

Please don't take this the wrong way, i'm not trying to bash you...

but please, explain to me how you see Adam's performance as 'brilliant'? As i've stated elsewhere, and to others on this board, I simply don't understand how Adam's performances up to now have been brilliant. Yes, he's flamboyant. Yes, he's over the top. Yes, as Simon has said, the performances are indulgent.

But brilliant? This i don't see. I honestly want to hear how you judge that as brilliant. I'm not intentially trying to be harsh on you, I simply am trying to understand where the fans of Adam are coming from.

We are coming from a place where everybody is dressed in body paint and rolling around in glitter. While people who are gorgeous and magnificent, like Adam, hypnotize us with their insanely impossible, perfect voices. Where people do magical things with sounds and make music with everything. And Adam shows everybody else what having a dream about singing while riding on unicorns and flying through turquoise water would feel like.

Honest disagreement, I see that, no prob. These things are mostly subjective.

More of my reasoning/observation concerning Lambert is here;

http://community.realitytvworld.com/boards/DCForumID69/867.shtml#47

Brilliant vocals, an artistic rendition, and an original performance with a rebellious air. Very refreshing, for me.

Also, very daring. He took such a chance, and in doing so he actually ignored someone like CW icon Randy Travis's comments/advice. Who would do that? And he pulled it off. How can that not be just… WOW?

All this puts him IMO head and shoulders above the others, some of whom are really very impressive vocalists. But they haven't really dared to be more, as Adam did.

Yep, his performances are really set up to push buttons.

Either you like the buttons he pushes and the vocal ability just adds to the brilliance of the performance or you really don't like the buttons he pushes and the whole thing will be just ugh for you, even if he had the purest tone ever heard on the planet and a 24 octave range, it will still be subjectively indulgent and awful.

That is part of what I like about the performance. Even when a performance pushes my buttons the wrong way I like that the artist is taking a risk and making a statement. Now when the buttons push the right way it has me jumping out of my seat with joy.

I really don't enjoy very safe boring performances even when technically close to good. If I'm going to bother with live music (and frankly I have near perfect relative pitch so I really can't listen to the vast majority of music until they've fixed the pitch with the sound mixer) it needs to do something for me that I can't get from a recording. I think that is one reason I don't go to a lot of concerts. Most singers tend to be a bit pitchy in a live show and most of them don't do enough with the performance to make it worth the pain. Adam actually has the ability to sing on pitch when singing live (which I will say most people that sing musical theater do, much more so than most musicians and that is why I will go to musical theater productions) but he does something with it that gives it impact. Even if that impact is something that will turn a lot of people off.

64. "Adam & DialIdol"
As someone who had Adam ranked smack dab in the middle at #6, I resent the implication that I'm a closet flat earther. I'm not sure how accurate DialIdol is, but if we take their results at face value, Adam shed about half his support from Michael Jackson week to Grand Ole Opry night (besides Alexis, he's the only other person to have such a precipitous drop). That would imply that there were people perfectly comfortable voting for him two weeks ago that were not as enthusiastic after his last performance.

Leaving aside artistic merit, in terms of winning of American Idol, I think Adam's last performance was a misstep (if he wants to win and/or if a win would be good for his career is another question entirely). Whether or not he recovers would seem to hinge on if his performances going forward help him recapture those voters that abandoned him during the Top 11 round.

I think it is hard to see how people feel just meh about Adam. He does seem to bring out the extremes of reaction rather than the I don't care enough (or know enough) about you middle section of most people's lists.

How to balance the love/hate/hate to love/love to hate so you get to medium blahness is a mystery. Much like sailing off the edge of a round planet.

I don't think that's accurate. I 'get him'. I just happen to think that he... cheated. It was Grand Ole Opry Night and if he sang like that at the Grand Ole Opry, they would probably want to kill him. At the very least, they would all walk out. At least make it sound a little country.

I enjoy Adam most nights, but he shouldn't have done that to a Johnny Cash song.

Suggestion: try listening to Adam with your eyes closed. Listen to how he (seemingly) effortlessly goes up the scale and shifts the notes. Don't look at the goth hair, the camera-eye-Adam stuff, the ever-so-tight clothes, the attitude, the flourish...just isolate his voice. Think about how he would sound on the radio, sight unseen.

Let me again try to clarify.

Adam CAN sing. We saw that with his audition of "Bohemian Rhapsody". All I want to see Adam do is go out there on the stage Wednesday night and show the world that he can simply sing and sell us on his vocals, as he did in his audition. I've seen Adam on stage in some YouTube videos, and from that I was also able to see his talent. On other videos, we do see the same Adam we see on Idol. On the Idol stage he is essentially selling the skills he has short.

The problem I have is that he takes it to the uber-extreme. He's overly flamboyant, self-indulgent, theatrical, etc. For me, it comes across as Adam playing a joke on American Idol and the viewing public.

In today's music business, its not good enough to have an artist who you have to close your eyes to listen to. Its marketing, its image, its very visual. We're no longer in the 80's, where perhaps the Adam we've seen would have fit in better.

I don't think he's playing a joke on anyone. I think he's being himself, which is flamboyant and theatrical. And there are plenty of people who like that. Like me. Adam is very visual, very much has a definite image. In fact, he has the most defined image of anyone in the competition. We know exactly who Adam is. You just don't like his image. LOL. It will remain to be seen whether the majority of America agrees with you. I'm betting they don't and he makes it to the Top Four, at least.

About his image... Right now, I think Adam would be better off NOT winning the title of American Idol and constrained to 19 Entertainment's wishes. I'm not sure I see him fitting the pop image of 19, but maybe I'm wrong.

Your comments were thought provoking, Geekboy. I think he is versatile and has a plan. Maybe it's Adam's plan to moderate his style as the show goes on and build his popularity...and then get flamboyant again at the end. It isn't good on AI to peak too early.

Your comments sound like a script for Simon....I can already hear Simon saying some week: "Brilliant. Just Billiant. And I'll tell you why. Adam, I'm glad you just came out and showed your vocals instead of all the theater and flourish you have been giving us in past weeks (audience boos here). Well, that's my opinion. And I would like to hear more of that straight up vocal from you."

Adam stands there bemused. Ryan or one of the judges makes some joke about Simon saying "straight up".

Simon, Randy and Ryan were all on a talk show (think it was Leno) and they were asked to put who they think will win in an envelope. They are going to open them after the finale and see if they were right. All 3 agreed it was going to be a male winner this year. And they said it was between Danny and Adam. They said Lil would be the top female. They never showed us who each wrote down as the winner though.

I agree. It will be interesting to see who they picked. I give kudos to the Leno Show for coming up with this idea.

ETA: I'm changing my mind. I guess we can consider this the judges PTTE. I mean we all picked a winner - those of us playing the game, that is.

For me, personally, i really don't see any frontrunner right now. As I've said before, i think this season is the strongest in terms of vocal skills in the top 10. I think almost any one of these guys could get on a roll and run, perhaps other than Megan.

Randy and Simon have said repeatedly that it will be either Adam or Danny, but i'm not convinced.

Adam turns off a lot of people. Danny does also. Just look at these forums.

Lil has shown weakness already when switching up genres.

Matt has pulled forward along with Kris. Allison is just freaking amazing.

Even Scott has a certian something that is bringing in fans.

I think it is very early to call, especially with these contestants this season.

24. "RE: Rankings - Top 11 - Grand Ol' Opry Night"
A little background on me so you know where I'm coming from... I grew up in a small farming town in mid-America listenig to the Grand Ole Opry, Hee Haw, Minnie Pearl, you get the idea... I was country when country wasn't cool. So I know a little bit about these songs and the original artists. I'm not a huge country fan now, but it's in my roots. I do love Randy Travis. I hope he sings tonight on the show (I haven't looked to see if he is). Carrie Underwood did a cover of Randy's "I Told You So" on Carnival Ride. I am so hoping they do a duet of this song tonight. Ok, now on with my opinions....

1. Anoop - yes, this song has been sung by many great artists and in many different ways. This was GREAT! I would buy this record (thank you, itunes).

2. Matt G. - I would buy a ticket to see him live! I LOVE his piano playing - "So Small" is a great song and he made it his own. Loved it. I'll probably buy this one too.

3. Kris Allen - I had to strain to remember this Garth song. He sang it really well - he has great control over his voice. Now if he would just open his mouth up a little more, I think he'd sound even better. I really didn't miss the guitar.

4. Danny - I cringed when I heard which song he was singing as I knew the groans would be coming (so predictable). The verses were not great, but the chorus.... I did get chills. I didn't really care for the jacket, but it wasn't distracting for me. I loved the white behind him and the bright lights.

5. Allison - great song for her! Gave it a rock edge and still stayed true to the genre.

6. Megan - again, perfect song for her. If she had been well, it would have sounded awesome so kudos to you for getting through it.

7. Alexis - not your best performance, but for me, better than some of the others. I think she will wear out on me instead of wear on me though. Does that make sense?

8. Scott - unexpectedly good. Wild Angels is not one of my favorite Martina songs. And please stay behind the piano.

Adam, Lil and Michael.... These are hard to rank for me. Do I rank them on their singing, their performance, their song choice? I'll rank them on likeability for me....

9. Adam - I didn't expect you to sing country. I wasn't sure what you would do. But that was bizarre. Johnny Cash took the Trent Reznor song "Hurt" and made it beautiful. It didn't really work for me the other way around (not sure who did the arrangement of the song, but it sounded like Reznor). However, I will give you props because you stuck to who you are as an artist; I just don't get it. You were, however, more exciting than the other two....

10. Lil - that was awful. Carrie Underwood knocked this song out of the park. I compared you to her the whole time and there just wasn't any comparison! Bad choice to try and sing country as country. Stick with who you are. You are the better singer, and that is why you are not last.

11. Michael - you are boring. I really hope you leave tonight.

Thank you, Agman

First, I have to heartily second SilverStar's recommendation. It's bad enough that I have to listen to some of the judges babble on for what seems like forever, but now the contestants are going to extend the process by talking back? By the end of the night, I was wishing the producers had muzzles standing by and ready to use during the judgments (if not the performances ). Mark my words - I don't care how well you sing, how well you perform, if I have wet dreams about you - I'm not voting for any contestant that says so much as one word during the critique period.* You can respond to the judges on your own time, not mine.

Overall, this week was not as good as last. No amazingly fantastic peformances, few outright clunkers, everybody kinda bunched up in the middle. My rankings:

1.) Allison - I thought she might struggle with tonight's theme, but she continues to impress. Best performance overall.

2.) Anoop - Best comeback. Excellent vocal, although I think he still needs to work on his stage presence.

3.) Kris - Best song choice of the night. I just wish the execution had been as good - I agree with the poster above who pointed out the bum note at the end. Still relatively good though.

4.) Danny - The second half was nice, but the first part was completely off. A letdown from last week.

5.) Matt - The vocals were strong throughout, but I wasn't entranced with it for some reason. Can't quite put my finger on why.

6.) Adam - I thought the vocals were good, but the performance was absolutely bizzare. I didn't get it.

7.) Alexis - Kind of excessively manic, disconnected from the song. Sung well, but it looked like an excruciating struggle on her part. Didn't feel like the performer and the song were connected at all.

8.) Lil - Carrie Underwood 1, Lil Rounds 0. I felt it was completely void of emotion and a very unwise song choice. If you are going to do a song a former Idol winner performed memorably before, you have to be sure that your rendition will be better. It wasn't even close.

9.) Scott - This week was better than last, but he's got to step up his game vocally if he ever wants to compete with the top tier. Maybe a trip away from the piano would do him some good (or perhaps seal his demise ).

10.) Megan - Pretty decent performance for someone with the flu, but boring overall. Was waiting for a woof woof or meow meow at the end of the song.

11.) Michael - A mumbly mess. Plus he started the talking back trend I despise so much, so he is quickly garnering all my ire. His elimination can't come soon enough.

*I probably shouldn't mention that I haven't voted for anyone since Season 3, should I? Naw, that would spoil all the fun . . .

Here's my rankings:

1. Anoop Desai -- from near-last to first in my eyes! Great!

2. Lil Rounds -- not her best, but still I thought she did fine. But she was a little stronger in the chorus.

3. Matt Giraud -- didn't like it quite as much as the judges did, but still very good.

4. Kris Allen -- very good!

5. Allison Iraheta -- very good as well.

6. Megan Joy -- you had the flu? You did really well considering that!

7. Alexis Grace -- liked the song, but could've had a little more edge.

8. Danny Gokey -- never do a song Carrie Underwood killed! Matt had no problems -- that was one of Carrie's more obscure songs -- but you failed miserably there!

9. Scott McIntyre -- nice but a little too boring.

10. Michael Sarver -- I heard LaToya London do that song much better!

11. Adam Lambert -- ACCKKK!!!! That says it all!

55. "RE: Rankings - Top 11 - Grand Ol' Opry Night"
I'm late to the party but not too late, I hope.

1. Adam. I know, it was a love it or hate it performance, and I loved it. No doubt about it. I loved it because it made me stop what I was doing and stare at the TV open-mouthed. I don't expect that from American Idol. It was odd, creepy, sensual, bizarre and a complete and total performance. The high notes at the end were gorgeous. Mostly, though, I loved it because it made me notice it.

2. Anoop. Oh Anoop. You're not going to win this. I'll bet you wonder sometimes how you even got here. I was worried when it seemed like Anoop was going down the "what totally out of his element song is he going to sing this week" road and pleasantly surprised when he tool "Always on My Mind", slowed it down and showed us that he does actually have a nice voice. It's the first time I said, "he can sing" as opposed to "he's interesting" or "he's entertaining." I don't really expect him to be this high on my list, well, ever, but this week, he earned it.

3. Allison. She surprised me a little, too. I like her voice. I'm waiting to be blown away by her but for now, she's doing well enough in my mind to keep getting another chance. Eventually, though, I want to be blown away.

-- drop off --

4. Alexis. The cute saves her and puts her here. I didn't hate the performance, I just know she can do better. She's completely flippin' adorable.

5. Matt. I'm not sure I get this guy. He's another one that I'd like to see blow me away with some amazing performance. I'm not convinced yet, but I can see a little more potential in him than in the others, so he goes here.

6. Scott. This week he showed that he does have a nice voice but I want some range from him, too. He doesn't have to do something that's not in his wheelhouse, but maybe pick it up a bit. Then again, he could do just fine as a balladeer, but I don't think that's going to win Idol.

7. Kris. Nice enough, cute enough and gosh darn it, people like him. I can take or leave him - he hasn't made a big impression on my yet. I'm not sure what it will take for him to do so.

8. Lil. I do like her, I didn't care for her performance this week (or last week for that matter.) She's got a great voice and I don't mind her attitude but I want to see her step it up and sing as well as I think she can. She hasn't yet - she's been too lightweight on song choices

9. Danny. I can't wrap my head around this guy so he lands here. I want to like him, and I do think he can sing, and I do not hold against him the fact that AI and his family/friends whoever are exploiting the dead wife thing. I really don't. There's something about his personality that I find odd. I'm not sure how to take him.

10. Megan. She's beautiful, yes. And normally I love the style of singing that she does and I normally love people with that kind of voice and style. She just doesn't do it for me, though. Hate the dancing and that ruins her for me before she even starts. It's not cute. Sorry.

11. Michael. Going first did you no favors. You weren't comfortable enough with the words to be able to really perform the song. Like an actor - you can't act while you're still learning your lines because you have to think too hard about the words. That song could have been done really well if he had had a better grasp and enunciation and were able to relax and really put some effort into performing it. Sorry, Michael, I think you're okay, but too forgettable this week.

57. "RE: Rankings - Top 11 - Grand Ol' Opry Night"
Ok, I can't stand it no more - I had to look up my password so I could log back in and throw my two cents in. (I haven't been on these boards for years, but couldn't resist getting back in the fray now.)
My rankings are:
#1 (BY A MILE) - Adam. Simply brilliant. I was nervous at first for him because of the rather boring theme week (almost as bad as the MJ theme week), but he took a song that I felt was just okay, and turned it into something that I would buy in a heartbeat. In fact, I did buy it - for the first time EVER, I downloaded a song from ITube (and while I was at it, I also picked up his version of "Satisfaction", another awesome cover.) I'm all about being original and doing what you feel is best for you and, even though his version definitely fell out of the country mode, still...I thought it was the one standout in an otherwise boring evening. Even though I didn't watch AI at all last year, or much before that (having become quite bored with the SOS every year), I think I might stick around this year - at least, as long as Adam's around!
#2: Anoop - very nice. I think I'll even forgive him for last week.
#3: Scott. I can't help it. I just adore this guy. He may well be just a 'good' singer as compared to others who are better, but I just have to give him props for the amount of courage and charisma he shows every week. I'm glad he made the top ten.
#4: Danny. He's really a great singer, although I hate this song so much that I couldn't stand to listen to it. He blew me away last week, though.
#5: Matt. He's very good; I didn't care for this song choice, but he's got good vocals.
#6: Kris. He's a good singer, but that song is BORING even when Garth sings it.
#7: Michael. Bad version of a decent song, but still...there's a reason he's ranked 7. (It's because of #'s 8, 9, and 10.)
#8: Lil Rounds. To be fair, she's my favorite female singer now that Alexis is gone (She was awesome, but I knew she was doomed when I heard her ruin 'Jolene', a song I've always liked.) Lil has a great voice, but you couldn't tell it by this performance. That's a very powerful song - I really thought she would've been able to pull it off with her vocals.
#9: Allison - I just don't feel the love for her. Her version of Patty Loveless's song was just bleh, it wasn't the great version a lot of people think it was. (Maybe because I really love Patty's version and used to listen to a lot, I know how it's supposed to sound.) Allison sounded very pitchy and, Simon was right, she is getting a bit 'precocious'.
#10: Meg. WHY do the judges love her so much? Because she's the only hope they have for a pretty blonde female singer this year? It CAN'T be her vocals because, sick or not, that was just awful what she did to Patsy Cline. I'm mainly sick of her, though, because of the way the judges (Simon!) can't seem to see past her looks to the rather mediocre talent behind it.

Whew! I didn't mean to be so long-winded, but I obviously had more to say than I thought. I didn't mean to be so hard on the female singers, but this year obviously goes to the men.
