"No Limit Texas Hold 'Em (Poker) on TV..."
I really hope I am not the only one that is hopelessly addicted to this stuff on TV. I got into watching it on television last summer/fall when ESPN televised the 2003 WSoP and then continued the interest into the fabulously produced World Poker Tour (Travel Channel).

I am really not sure why I am getting hooked, and it doesn't seem that people playing cards on television would be very exciting, but it turns out to be suspenseful with the big pots and bluffs but still having a light air about it with some of the more amusing players on tour. I just seem to immerse myself with all the strategy and the styles and looks of the different players. It is a bit weird, but somehow this found a way into my weekly schedule.

I hope there are some other people here that at least watch this stuff (World Series of Poker, World Poker Tour, and the less entertaining Celebrity Poker), and by the ratings I think there would be. Anyone out there?

1. "Oh yeah"
There are a number of us out here.

WPT is a blast. Fox Sports has tried to show some poker, but their show is boring, boring, boring. I've had a lot of fun watching WSoP and WPT, though.

I wonder what's going to happen to the World Series, since Binion's had to close due to tax issues. It's been fun watching the "dead money" win that the past two years.

Have whip, will travel.

I saw that Fox Sports Poker a few times, and you're right, pretty darn boring. The room lighting is poor, the players are less inspired there, the format seems clunky, and the announcers make the Braves guys on TBS sound good.

For the WSoP (Which I think starts tommorow, although I could be wrong), I think another Binion's location will hold it for this year and I would bet a bunch of casinos are lining up for the rights. And I agree, the dead money is always fun there, although I would like to see a pro win soon.

Of course not Phil, the later he loses, the more coverage we get, the more pouting we see, the happier I turn out to be, because it is ridiculously fun to see him whine and complain and at times, try to be nice.

I was refering more to a guy like Gus Hansen (He won the most recent WPT event IIRC, helluva a guy to see play), Chris Ferguson, T.J. Cloutier or even Barry Greenstein (Who is a great story in himself).

I still think amateurs will have a very good share in this type of tournament since they are so unpredictable and a streak of luck can hit anyone.

>I was refering more to a guy like Gus Hansen

He is one of my favorites! I love it when he's at the final table, because I know we're going to see some interesting play.

>Chris Ferguson, T.J. Cloutier or even Barry Greenstein

Haven't seen Chris that much, just know him by reputation. TJ made a final table this year on WPT, and I was cheering like crazy for him. Is Barry the guy who plays for charity?

8. "RE: Oh yeah"
Gus is a thrill to watch when you know the cards (His match v. Hoyt Corkins (2 Top 2 finishes in WPT tourneys in one year?) was a mini-epic, and he was great to watch earlier this year as well.

Chris is a solid player, he recently came in second in a different style of poker (In the World Series of Poker brand), and he has a fun personality and look wise, very interesting.

I am rooting for T.J. anytime he is in the game, he is classy but will call people on indiscretions (which is nice to see), one of the better players never to win the big one.

And yep, Greenstein plays for charity, a good cause and he is a good player to boot. He beat Ferguson in the previously mentioned event.

I love this stuff. I watch the show occasionally, but only because I play on-line daily and have a tournament with friends at least once a month. We used to play everything from baseball to stud to mexican sweat - but now it is all hold 'em, all the time.

If you haven't checked out pokerroom.com , they'll stake you with some free money and you can play lots of hold 'em however you might prefer.

Of course, open it in another window so you can still have SB up in your browser.

I love both watching and playing poker. I play almost every day on line. I play at the same site that Chris Moneymaker won his seat on last year.

As for this years WSOP, the $10,000 main event does start today at 2pm. There are 2,600 players that are entered. First place should pay $5-6 million.

ESPN has desided to expand their coverage this year and include some of the other events this year. Should be interesting. Here is the complete line up.

Wow! Thanks for the informaton. 2600 people though? That is insane and will be a great TV event for the next 5 months (Anything from the lesser (but still significant) events to the big one). I am sure that whoever is running it this year (Still Binion's?) is extremely happy.

ESPN is smart to expand the horizons though in the slow (sports wise) summer months (Baseball, Sportscenter, and not a whole lot else).

Although this is really day 2, it is the other half of the whole field, so it is sort of day 1 as well. Same as before, proceed at own risk. Amir Vahedi is at the WSoP

20. "The Final Table"
Well, the final table is up. I bet there is a good mix of amateurs and pros, but I (sadly) only recognize one man at the final table, and he was at the final table last year. (Update: With research, there seems to be a very good chunk of pros. Impressive considering the amateur influx).

The chip leader has around 1/3 (or so) of the total chips available.

If you want to see it, highlight below.

Seat 4. Greg Raymer $8,215,000 (Research: Is involved lightly in poker in Yahoo searches. Nickname is "Fossil Man" since he collects fossils and displays them on the table. Has pro experience, wrote summaries on his game. Been near the top consistantly throughout the toruney. Is an accomplished poker player on the whole. He is a lawyer from Connecticut and originally from North Dakota. His most notable finish is a 3rd place at a WPT stop in Foxwoods in 2001. Funny note: He is by far the most interesting looking person at the table, the picture I saw showed him as pretty chunky (no Benvenisti) with spiral glasses).
Raymer’s motto: “I only appear to be wacko – in reality, I’m much worse.”

Seat 5. Matt Dean $4,920,000
(Research: I cannot find a speck on this guy outside of the this WSoP. I have to believe he is an amateur with a very good run. He is a 25 year old aspiring math teacher from Texas working towards his degree. He learned to play poker online only one year ago.)

Seat 2. Josh Arieh $3,205,000 (Research: Born in NY, lives in ATL. He is a 29 year old pro poker player (with an interesting look). He has won once at the WSOP (Limit Hold'Em) and was in the money 10 times in 5 years.)

Seat 7. Glenn Hughes $2,275,000 (Research: Also known as "Big Cat", his a 39 year old semi-retiree. He has two children and lives in Arizona. Uses his time with family, poker, and golfing. Is an accomplished poker player, finishing in the money in a lot of tourneys, but this is his first final table)

Seat 6. Dan Harrington $2,245,000 (Research: "Action Dan" Hariington is a very successful pro poker player over the years, famous golfing brother Padraig Harrington, placed 3rd in last year's WSoP Main Event and he won previously in 1995. This is his third final table in ten years, and amazing feat. He grew up in Boston and was a successful investor before turning to poker. Capable in more then just NLTH'M and lives in California now.)

Seat 8. David Williams $1,575,000 (Research: The youngest player at the final table (23), started playing poker 7 years ago and is majoring in math/economics at SMU. He credits Marcel "The Flying Dutchman" Luske with helping him the most (he busted 10th), credits mother for her support)

Seat 3. Al Krux $1,305,000 (Originally from NC, now in NY. He is a professional poker player who made the final table once (1990) and has a golden bracelet in a seperate event. Is married with 4 children)

Seat 9. Michael McClain $885,000 (39 year old pro from California. Has a BA in engineering. Best known to normal public in exposure in "Agony of Defeat" segment in last year's telecast. Turning it around.)

Seat 1. Mattias Andersson $740,000 (A 24 year old Swede who supported himself financially through internet poker. Formerally worked in a toy store before working on his game, and credits pokerpages.com (Impressive site too IMO) in helping him refine his strategy. He won the Magic championship (as in the card game Magic) in Sweden a few years back)

Seat #1 is also linked to a big poker website one way or another. 1 PM WST (I think) is when the big table starts.

Refering to the hidden text...

Seat 4 is had a semi-tough Ftable, but he is still in the lead by a good chunk

Refering to the hidden text, the even numbered seats are remaining (2, 4, 6, 8).

#4 is exerting absolute domination at this point, holding 3/5 of the chips at a table of 4 players. Of course, anyone can win.

The major pro is still at the table that has been mentioned, I think he is 3rd, not sure.
