"Canadian Idol"
Roll out the Red, White, and Red, it's time for another version of Canadian Idol.

We don't get our own forum here, so let's steal a small corner of the AI one. Maybe we can use this thread and reply with a new sub each week.

Episode 1 - June 3
CI started last night, and I missed most of it. I did catch the very last guy, who digs holes in Loydminster Alberta for a living (though he doesn't even know how much he is getting paid). Sand with his eyes closed, but had some good soul and the panel loved him. It will be interesting to see what a purely raw talent like that can do.

Anyone see more than that?

I watched it. They put thru a couple brothers from Ont. One had gone to the UK to pursue his career and came back for CI. They liked his singing the best of the bros. But thought his brother was better looking with more charisma. So they both got the gold tickets.

As usual on the first show they seemed to spend more time on the ones that didn't make it. They did give one girl from Sask a ticket because she begged for it. She was from some small town and had never been anywhere. She wanted a chance to get out of there and go to the big city of Toronto. Zack caved and thought the experience would be good for her.

from VFTW there is someone that posts CI online, that way the USians can see it.

It seems that it has a lot of entertainment value from some of the clips I've seen on YouTube.

3. "RE: Canadian Idol"
Thanks Snidget.

I just listened to part 1 and part 2. Part 1 is a lot of intro from past seasons. Not much there. Part 2 has a pair of brothers (starting at around 2:50) who play individually with guitars and are outstanding. I look forward to seeing how far they can go.

I have to add that Sass Jordan is hot. The Canadian judges are way better than the US judges!

I will try to listen to more tonight.

I saw the premier. It was pretty good, I guess. This year they skipped SK, which led to controversy in our province. CI is good, but I think we've discovered that it isn't the album deal of a lifetime like our American counterparts.

Toronto week started out ok. So far I don't have any clear favs. I haven't decided if I'm going to vote seriously or go VFTW style. (I have done both in different seasons.) There will be a VFTW pick this year like last year with Jaydee.

They rushed through alot of it lastnight. I wasn't sure at times who made it and who didn't. We have our usual stories we get and then everyone else. Hopefully tonight will make it more clear to me who is still in the hunt.

Wow, there is some great talent this year. Go to Snidget's link above, and check out the first group in Ep4 part 6. 2 brothers and 2 others. Great talent. I think my early favourite is the guy with the guitar, though I am not sure how he will translate to the vairous theme nights.

So they completely psyched them out with this talk of a Top 22. Then they went with a Top 24. Both the brothers made it to the Top 24. I was disappointed that Mark from Nfld made it. We know that if someone from Nfld makes it to the fan vote they will stick around a long time. Nobody supports their own more than Nfld even if they are not a good singer. But alot of good male muscians this season.

10. "RE: Canadian Idol"
LAST EDITED ON 06-18-08 AT 01:58 PM (EST)

I said exactly the same thing to my DW about the kid from nfld. Putting anyone from their in the top 24 is almost a ticket to the top 10. And face it, he isn't that good.

Edited to add this picture.

I apologize for making you see this. But c'mon, that just isn't idol sexy!

There is some great talent. 6 are from the Toronto area, including the 2 brothers. Toronto is not like Nfld with respect to supporting its residents, so that could be bad. Interesting to have more guys that girls. Last season had stronger guys also. I am wondering if this is because of the ability to use guitars. I think there is a huge advantage to be able to audition with a guitar (can make a so-so singer sound a bit better).

Here's the link to the CTV site, which has the top 24.
http://www.ctv.ca/idol/gen/Competitors.html

My early favs:
- Oliver Pigott (IMO better talent of the brothers, but is other cuter?)
- Sebastien Pigott (which brother will last longest?)
- Adam Castelli (Hamilton again?)
- Lindsay Robins
- Gary Morrisette (not much from BC this year, but this web contestant seems good)
- Martin Kerr might surprise also.

Should be a good summer. I am sad that now the show goes away from good songs to crappy theme songs, and regional voting. Oh well, that is the format. I hope the cream will still rise.

11. "First 4 out..."
I enjoyed how they did the elim show. No dragging out the who will go and who will stay. Instead they let everyone get in groups of 2, 3 or 4 and do a song. It was entertaining and then with 5 minutes left they just announced the 2 going from Monday's show and 2 from Tuesday's show. No faking anyone out. Just a straight announcement. The females are falling quickly this season. We lost 3 females and 1 male. Both Lindsays along with Tetiana and Shaun said GoodBye.

12. "RE: First 4 out..."
I agree, what a great format for the show. The group sets were really good (this season has some excellent talent) and I am glad they didn't go competitor by competitor saying safe or not, and then dragging out the bottom whatever.

I am surprised that the women have taken such a beating. They were down 15-9 at the start of the F24, and with those 4 gone are now down 14-6.

On the regional side, Toronto, Montreal, and Vancouver each lose a competitor (and Vancouver only had one to support - disappointing for Shaun). I am a bit surprised to see a maritimer go so early, since they usually get huge regional support.

Oliver better do something better next week. He was way off base this week.

It is interesting how professional the group seems this year. I think very many of them have spent a lot of time performing in clubs.

Oliver definitely shocked a few people. After performing one way in the audition process we got Oliver with the grunting crotch dance. I think he wanted to make an impression and stand out. He stood out all right. But not for the right reasons.

And if Mark winks and points at me one more time I am going to crawl in the TV and smack him. I guess he never met a camera he didn't mug for. But he can't be gone soon enough for me. Sadly that won't happen for a long time. Can I hope all Nfld phones go out next week on CI night?

I would not be surprised to only see a couple females make the Top 10. The males are stronger this season.

The disappointing thing for me is that despite all the talent, it is mostly a rock talent. Wait a second, that is a good thing, right? Yes, except that soon the show will start throwing goofy themes at us, and making the singers sing songs that I don't want to hear.

Would the show really be so bad if each week the singers had free reign to choose their songs? Do the themes really help?

Mark must go. We need an anti-Mark siggie.

16. "RE: Next 4 to go"
I watched all of this week last night.

2 more girls gone, and now the mix is 12 guys and 4 girls.

Interesting shows this week. I liked the format of giving encores on the result show, and thought they had the best four last night. Some comments...
- Sebastien Pigott - very professional, but almost seemed too staged. Like he was making love to the camera the whole time, and it got creepy.
- Oliver Pigott - much better than last week. That sort of song is where he needs to be.
- Theo Tams - this guy is special.
- Omar Lunan - beautiful voice. He controls it like an instrument. All the others are playing guitar or piano, but he just sings. Is that good or bad?
- Mookie - I can't remember another competitor seeming to have so much fun playing guitar and singing. He did an almost unheard of song, which is a huge risk, but he did it so well.
- Amberly Thiesen - According to the judges she is the best of the remaining females. I actually prefer Katherine St-Laurent. But are the girls in the contest this year?
- Earl - The judges love this guy. He is certainly quirky, but I didn't think that was so great.
- Adam Castelli - I hated his song. I had high hopes for this guy, but he isn't doing well IMO. After last year's win, is Hamilton into this show enough to keep him around?

I found the rest mostly not memorable. Mitch and Gary were okay, but with the others above are they destined to be gone soon?

Wow, 6 to go this week. That is a deep cut from 16. They all better bring their A game.

I've been watching non-faithfully thus far (when I found out two of my friends made the to the top 100, but not the final 24).

But I gotta say: Theo should win it all. That guy has some serious talent, and is a true performer. I'd buy his album today.

I can't help be reminded that Sebastien is an actor. Is he doing this to further his acting career or is music his first love?

Oliver was definitely better this week. But it would have been hard to do worse.

Theo is one of the best. But will they start asking him to get out from behind the piano soon?

Omar impressed me this week after I had almost forgotten about him.

I enjoy Mookie. He always makes me smile.

Earl... what was that dancing or whatever it was? I was sure he had been backstage with his snowboarding buddies getting in the mood by lighting up.

Adam needed his ego checked. Being hit with a bottom 3 might help.

I believe Amberly will probably be the last female standing. How far she can make it will be interesting.

And then there is Mark. I really hate that he is taking up the space of someone that actually has singing talent. I keep hearing that CTV continues to get hate mail from his region because they always think they are left out, etc. What about the several other provinces and territories that do not have representatives. Why does CI have to cater to the Rock every season.

19. "RE: Next 4 to go"
Why does CI have to cater to the Rock every season?

Just like many other shows, I assume they try to spread out the casting to try to make the show interesting. I really don't think that Mark is as good as many other singers, but at 24 they feel they should keep him because he is different.

Jake must object to this, because week after week he seems to take a shot at Mark's performance but concludes that he will probably be around for a while because he is from the Rock.

Your comment about Oliver is exactly what I said to DW.

20. "Top 16"
I missed some of this week, but have gone back and watched most of it.

My picks (night 1):
Must Stay:
Theo
Mookie
Amberly
Omar

Go:
Martin - good voice, no star power
Adam - I liked this guy in auditions, but he is getting boring.

Close:
Marie-Pierre
Mark - should go, but will the Rock save him again?

My picks (night 2):
Must Stay:
Oliver
Sebastien (still mugging the camera/audience too much for my liking)
Gary - not great this week, but I still like this guy
Katherine

Go:
Drew - boring
Mitch - again, close but...

Close:
Katelyn - I hope she stays
Earl - I don't get this guy. Fun (or funny?) to watch, but does he really have talent?

So who are your picks to go and stay?

Going home to leave the top 10 are:
- Martin
- Gary (ouch)
- Omar (ouch)
- Katelyn
- Marie-Pierre
- Oliver (shock)

Wow, I was dead wrong on the day 2 picks. Both guys I thought were definitely toast ended up staying. And my preseason favourite (Oliver) is out. Wow.

Mark is the first one safe. Oliver is the last boot. Something is wrong with that.

The judges picked both Oliver and Omar to sing the week they picked the 4 best performances. They can't be happy about some of the decisions.

Now the interesting part will be how long do the 2 females and Mark last in the top 10.

I was a bit surprised Drew made it. I guess the pimp spot really helped him. And Adam's fans must of really got scared and voted in record numbers to save him.

David Bowie songs next week. Who will sing what?

23. "Top 10 Survivors"
So these are the top10. I am not a big Bowie fan. I think this week will be tough.

Here are my guesses:
Theo - Changes
Mookie - Suffragette City?
Amberly - Peace on Earth/Little Drummer Boy (could someone try to use this song? This would suit Amberly's sensitive side)
Adam - Under Pressure
Mark - Knock on Wood (and it will be painful to us)
Sebastien - Rebel Rebel (will come complete with James Dean snarl)
Katherine - Dancing in the Street
Drew - Blue Jean
Mitch - China Girl
Earl - Let's Spend the Night Together (since Bowie did this with Mick would that be okay?)

All guesses. What are yours?

Gah. I only agree with four of the top 10.

Mark? Seriously?

Earl? C'mon!

Adam? WTF!

Drew? no way.

Mitch and Sebastien are borderline for me.

I only agree with Theo (should win), Mookie, Amberly and Katherine.

Omar and Gary should have certainly stuck around.

Then again, I think CI exists for the sole purpose of pissing me off... I would rather have my head stapled the carpet than listen to/watch Ben Mulroney tell us how wonderful he is.... and the pathetic comments from the judges are far worse than Randy, Paula and Simon. Yet I still tune in....

I agree with your list Meemo. I am curious where you stand with respect to the 2 Pigott brothers? I really thought Oliver was a contender before getting booted. Sebastien may not have the best voice, but when the show is called "Idol" it is more than just voice and I expect this guy to get a lot of votes.

My early prediction (not preference) for the F2 is Sebastien and Theo - the Entertainer vs the Musician.

Mookie might be the bronze medalist.

Earl is the enigma to me. The judges just dote on his coolness, and yet to me the guy is just a joke.

Overall though, I find the CI judges better than the US ones. Paula is useless, and Simon only seems to battle with Ryan these days (though I do appreciate his honesty). The Canadian judges tend to offer constructive criticism.

You know what? My prediction follows yours exactly. Theo vs. Sebastien with Mookie in third.

I'm really not a fan of the Pigott brothers (though admittedly, I haven't seen all of their performances).

I definitely think Sebastien is the bigger talent between them, but his style of performance doesn't win me over.

And I agree about Earl. Everytime he sings it reminds me of bad drunken karaoke.

Unfortunately it is only on network TV in Canada.

But check out the link in Post 2 above (thanks Snidget!). If that works for you, then you can get all the Canadian Idol shows there. You might have to hunt around a bit, as when new content gets added the CI shows drop off the main page. With luck you will even be able to find some of the older shows there.

Good luck!

Zack - didn't like singing or the drums.

Farley - good energy, but weird

Sass - "clamfest" - a mess. Lots of intensity
Farley - mess of song, but lots of intensity

Next week - classic rock songs from artists who are dead. Yikes! I wonder if that will include songs from bands who have lost one member. Such as AC/DC, INXS, or even the Stones (prove that Keith Richards is really alive). Regardless, I think they should be able to find some good songs in that theme.

58. "RE: Canadian Idol"
I was wondering if there was a thread on this.

I haven't watched the previous shows but this one seems to have a lot of talent which isn't surprising given that they've expanded the age limit.

My predictions for top 5 would be:
Theo Tams - he probably should win this
Earl Stevenson - I'd rather put Mitch here but the judges love him so much.
Amberly Thiessen (that would be three Alberta peeps. Can Alberta possibly vote that much? but why did she audition in Montreal?) She had a couple of million dollar quotes which suggests to me that she could get a record deal regardless of how well she does.
Katherine St-Laurent - she should do an Avril Lavigne song. She'd be a dead ringer.
Mookie Morris - he, Earl and Theo already have their look down and I think it works for each of them.

Next 2:
Mitch McDonald - I like him and if this weren't live but edited, I'd say he had the million dollar quote (when Sass said: "Mitch is the kind of guy who sneaks up and wins this thing" just after his audition)
Sebastian Piggott - Though his performance for the top 10 was completely forgettable.

Bottom 3:
Drew Wright - I haven't heard him enough to make an opinion. He seems a little too nondescript to stand out enough for CI.
Mark Day - He should already be gone. He almost didn't even make the top 200.
Adam Castelli - had a great audition but not so much since.

I thought that Omar Lunan, Oliver Pigott and Gary Morisette would have made the top 10 over Mark, Sebastian and Drew but what do I know?

Who is likely to get a record deal regardless of where they finish? I'd say Theo, Amberly and, perhaps, Earl and Katherine. The just seems like a number of people who will have records within the next year or two.

I thought that Omar Lunan, Oliver Pigott and Gary Morisette would have made the top 10

To me these three, along with Theo, Katherine and Mookie made up the Top 6 as far as music talent.

but what do I know?
You know the same as the rest of us, that fan voting doesn't always pick the best talents.

I hope that you are right, and that Theo wins. Then we can say that fan voting did pick the best talent. But the eliminations to get their were not correct (IMO).

60. "July 21 - Final 9 perform"
How about all in one recap.

Theme is songs by dead artists.

1. Theo - Bob Marly - No Woman No Cry
Great job again. Out from behind the piano. Judges loved him again.

2. Mitch - Jeff Healy - Angel Eyes
This guy's voice isn't good (IMO) but he performs it his way. I love this song. Could be vulnerable.

3. Earl - Jim Morrison - Light My Fire
I still don't get Earl, but the judges loved him a lot.

4. Sebastien - Elvis - Love Me
Judges don't like him, and neither do I. Hollywood looks, but not a good voice lately. He is really pushing the crooner look.

5. Katherine - Janis Joplin - Move Over
Did she do Joplin another week? I don't think Joplin makes for good Idol songs. I didn't like this performance. The judges felt she sang well, but missed the mood of the song.

6. Drew - Blind Melon - No Rain
Great job, and Ben Mulroney in bumble bee costume! Probably saved himself for another week.

7. Mookie - James Brown - I Feel Good
Mookie is cool, but that was weird for me. Signs all over Toronto today asking for votes for Mookie.

8. Amberly - Bob Marly - Redemption Song
Started off slowly, but very well done in an emotional presentation. Judges liked it too. And she does look good again!

9. Mark Day - Luther Vandros - Dance with my Father
He belts this out, and fakes a tear at the end. Better job singing. Judges seemed to like him.

My bottom 3 tonight are:
- Sebastien
- Mitch
- Katherine

Going home - on performance should be Sebastien.

61. "My top 9 this week."
A telemarketer called during Earl's song so I didn't get a good listen to it.

Overall, I thought there were 8 good to very good performances.

1. Mookie. I thought it was the best performance. He used the stage; he worked the audience. He has good presence.

2. Theo. His voice is fantastic. Excellent projection. It'll be interesting to see whether voice (Theo and Amberly) win over show (Earl and Mookie) or vice versa.

3. Amberly. Again the voice is great. It didn't look like she was playing guitar at first. I worry that she hides behind it because she's afraid to work the room.

4. Katherine. I like this performance. I thought her voice sounded very mature especially for her age. I was glad that the judges actually gave constructive criticism here. She may have the brightest future of the bunch because all she is lacking is a couple more years experience.

5. Earl. I missed most of it but there can be no doubt that he does all the songs his way which seems to be what the judges like. The melody line seems to be just a suggestion with Earl.

6. Mark. I thought he did quite well this week and I was all ready to write how he doesn't have the pipes to keep up with the best singers or the showmanship to keep up with the performers but if he keeps singing like that, he'll stay for a few more weeks.

7. Mitch. I thought it was good but not overly memorable and not special enough given how well everyone else did.

8. Drew. He sang well. He used the stage. But there was something I didn't like about the performance. So, again, it's a case of good but the others just did better this week.

(big gap)

9. Sebastien. He and Mookie were both bottom 3 last week. Mookie stepped up with a great performance this week and Sebastien bombed.

Tonight: Sebastien goes home. Mitch and Drew are still safe, for now.

The thing I really didn't get? Why Ben Mulroney was in a bumblebee suit????

Ben was paying tribute to the Blind Melon song No Rain. In the video for that song, the following character is prevalent:

Here's the video :

In fact, that song is often referred to as "The Bumble Bee Song" because of that.

Show starts with a medley. I hate the medleys.

Then JD Bixby, last season's runner up, played his new song. Not bad.

Results:
Bottom 3 were Katherine, Sebastien, and Amberly.

Amberly looks shocked to be bottom 3. I am shocked she is there too.

But then she is safe. One of Kaherine and Sebastien will go home.

Sebastien... is safe. Katherine is out.

She has a great voice, but I think she didn't choose good songs, didn't have the maturity for this show, and, sadly, was from the wrong province. Quebec is notorious for not supporting their Idols.

I didn't mind the group number. Does AI do medleys all the time too? I think it was interesting to see Sebastian and Theo sing back to back though. And seeing Katherine and Amberly back to back.

I think you are right about Katherine in that the show just isn't popular in Quebec and so fewer people vote. I don't think it's a case of not supporting their idols so much as so few even bother with the show so the base for a Quebec artist is quite possibly the lowest in the country. Katherine should try out for Star Academie next, assuming that that show is still on. It's too bad because she was easily better than Sebastien. Still, if she had done CI in two years rather than now, she would have been an even better singer and performer. And she was top 9 this time! She has a future, that one.

I'm stunned that Amberly was so low. Can you imagine an all guy final 5? I don't think that the producers would want that. I wonder if they'll assist her, if necessary. No one would ever know because she has top 5 talent so it's easy to assume that she didn't have the fewest votes.

I certainly agree that Katherine has a lot of talent, and may be better in 2 years. Last season had a guy return who had gone far before, so it does happen. He went further, but this show is not just about talent, but about getting votes. IMO Katherine could never do much better on CI because of that.

As for Amberly, maybe last night was the scare her voters needed to get them out. She really deserves to stay based on musical talent. But I think she needs to get a little more energy going. I love her folksiness, but that might not get her enough votes.

I agree with you on Katherine's chances in CI; however, that same disinterest by Quebec in CI becomes interest in supporting their own artists when Katherine does come out with an album of her own, especially if it's in French. I see her as having a good career ahead of her.

I found this week a little boring. Some are becoming predictable. I expected Sebastian to be in the bottom 3. I think he was more surprised than anyone that he survived. Not surprised Katherine went home. I think this was her weakest performance in a awhile. And Que is not Nfld when it comes to voting.

There are lots of people suspecting that Amberly was not really in the bottom 3. But they wanted to scare her voters so they put her there. Who knows?

I hear there are whispers that Amberly and Mitch have a showmance going in the mansion.

Next week is unplugged.

Idol unplugged.... with Gavin Rossdale (former lead singer of Bush, and hubby of Gwen Stefani)

Mark Day: Stay by Sugarland -- never heard of it.
Judges liked it (as usual - not a drop of critisism) -- a "nice performance." IMHO? - meh.

Mitch McDonald: Oh Atlanta by Bad Company (or Allison Kraus)
With violin and accordian accompaniment. Very country souding. Critisized for song choice. Didn't step up and show that he's the potential winner of the show. Too safe a song. IMHO? - bleh. Could be vulnerable this week.

Amberly Thiessen: The Way I Am by Ingrid Michaelson (again, never heard of it)
Totally suits her voice - nice delivery (that's my opinion). Judges gush about her (appropriately).

Mookie Morris: Ophelia by The Band. Man, are they gonna do a song I actually know?
I think this guy is just too cool... nice horn arrangement.. but still didn't blow me away. Farley calls him a "star" -- others agree. No nonsense performance. Zach says T.O. should be embarassed if they don't get out and vote for him. Jake says its the best singing he's done on the show.

Drew Wright: Sunday Morning by Maroon5
Hmmm.. not usually a fan (of Drew, or this song), but I thought he knocked it out of the park. Judges didn't think it was great... perplexed by song choice. Jake didn't like how he was dressed (he was rather plain), but Sass loved him.

Theo Thams: Weak in the Knees by Serena Ryder... I love this song!
Back on the piano. Very nice strings arrangement. Man, this guy sings with some passion. Crowd loves it.... drowning out the judges. Consensus: the performance of the night.

I missed Sebastian and Earl -- recrap makes it look ike I didn't miss much.

Ok.. for the first time in CI history, I am actually voting.... for Theo.

Amberly's song made me want to go out and buy a sweater. I associate that song with the commercial.

Unplugged shows are usually a little boring. They go slow and I thought most of them were predictable. At this point I do not know who I want to win. But I want someone to surprise me.

73. "My top 8"
I was away yesterday so I couldn't post.

My top 8 from Monday's show were:

Theo, Amberly and Mookie. Tough to choose between these three. They all had great numbers.

Next.
Earl, Mitch and Drew. Songs were fine just not on par with the there above. Mitch's song started off really well but it ended poorly.

Next.
Mark Day. I think he's the weakest of the remaining 7.

Sebastien. In the recap when he got the axe, it looked like he had some good moments. I just didn't see them. I did like his harmonica playing though.

Next week: I think that Mark, Mitch and Drew should be in the bottom three with Mark leaving.
What will likely happen? Mark, Amberly/Mookie and Mitch/Drew with Mark leaving.

I'm on pat leave now so who knows how often I'll get to post.

My top 7 were as follows:

Theo Tams. I was very impressed by his use of the stage and presence. He was able to perform as well as sing.

Mookie Morris. It's too bad they need to do such short versions of the songs because it was a little short and disjointed but he still performs it so well. For once Zack said an appropriate comment - an AOR man should be fired if they don't sign him.

Amberly Thiessen. She sings well but is still picking the same style of song.

Drew Wright. He nailed it this week.

Mitch McDonals. Another good performance.

Earl Stevenson. Didn't like it so much. I thought it lacked something.

Mark Day. Sounded like he was off/flat at times. He started off well though.

Overall, a very strong week.

76. "RE: August 4 - Final 7 perform"
The close-ups of Tom Jones' face were a bit scary. What happened to his eyebrows?

Theo's stage antics were a bit uncomfortable for me. It was like he went too wild too quick. It was almost jarring for me. I guess I would have preferred a little less. But he sang it well as always.

I liked Mookie. I think he was my favourite this week. Hope he stays out of the bottom 3.

Amberly is starting to bore me. She is attractive and sings well. But she needs to change it up.

Drew had a good song choice. But I have heard that song done so much better by others. He was also hard to hear at times. I noticed on quite a few tonight they were overwhelmed by the music and backup singers.

Mitch was another that seemed to be hard to hear at times. What I heard I liked.

I thought this would be a good choice for Earl. But for some reason I did not think he felt the song.

Mark just go home already.

And I wish the Pantene people would drag Ben back to their salon and give his hair a makeover. Also didn't care for Sass' big blue shoulders.

Mark just go home already.

You got your wish! Although I have to say, based on what Ben (and others) said about him and his words and last song, he's got some great people skills.

With that, all the 'easy' drops have taken place. The final 6 deserve to be the final 6.

Alberta still has 3 though. One Menonite, one gay and one from a town that borders Saskatchewan. Will any get the Alberta vote en masse?
Toronto has 2, I think (though one is Collingwood).
Nova Scotia (Port Moody?) has one. Will he start getting the Mark Day votes?

Who will VFTW pick now??

I had heard rumours earlier that some of VFTW were backing Earl. Maybe they will all move to him now.

I am happy Mark is gone. He might have been a nice person. But he annoyed me on the show.

Drew and Mitch are the last two who have escaped the bottom 3 each week. It is so obvious the judges do not think Drew should still be there. Zack looked like he was ready to throw something when Theo and Earl ended up in the bottom 3 yet Drew was safe. I think there would have been some yelling if Mark had not been the one to go home.

81. "Aug 11 - Final 6 perform"
Theme is Canada Rocks - songs by Canadian artists, though not necessarily rock.

1. Amberly - 1-2-3-4 by Feist
(rehearsed with guitar, but performed without)
Jake - liked it, but not changed up from Feist's version.
Sass - great
Farley - good singing, low energy
Zack - meh
+ I actually perferred her in rehearsal with the guitar. A bit meh for me.

2. Theo - Sweet Ones by Sarah Slean
(piano, and then kicked out bench to finish)
S - loved changes in melody and physicality
F - good
Z - truest and best Theo's done. Really cool
J - special
+ I found this excellent. He sang it with a roughness in his voice which was really good, and the chenges in mood were excellent.

3. Mitch - I Love this Town by Joel Plaskett
(picking on the guitar - no band or backup)
F - really good
Z - "in the pocket" - Paul Simonesque
J - liked use of picked guitar
S - owned that song
+ the picked guitar was awesome. Maybe the best I have heard from Mitch. Great emotion and controlled delivery

4. Earl - Little Bones by the Tragically Hip
(just singing with guitar accompaniment)
Z - very hip, but will scare grandmas
J - liked the reinvention of the song
S - loved "rock" of it
F - loved the soul
+ I love this song, but not Earl's version. I watched the F8 ep, and Earl was very good, but this? Why do the judges love this guy so much??

5. Drew - That Song by Big Wreck
(playing guitar)
J - didn't keep up with the band
S - some parts "meh", some parts great
F - not enough emotion
Z - meh
+ I thought this was really meh. He was told to get more energetic, but I guess it's just not in him.

6. Mookie - Magic Carpet Ride by Steppenwolf
(no guitar, big-a55 sunglasses, dj scratching in parts)
S - great
F - cool & charismatic
Z - found dj part distracting, but killer cool
J - old song, but made it very contemporary. Most exciting
+ This was awesome for me. I thought Mookie looked really goofy, but he really did make that song new and cool, without losing the heart of the song.

Overall I thing Drew is the one to go based on performance.

Best last night were Theo and Mookie, again.

Amberly is still playing it safe.

I'd have Mitch and Amberly tied for last night.

I still don't get Earl. He's talented but he spends too much time walking around.

Drew had a great last week but this week he was the weakest.

I see Amberly, Drew and Earl in the bottom three this week with Drew going.

Amberly seemed to be dressed wrong for this song. I agreed with Zack when he said it was like Elvira singing Feist.

I really enjoyed Theo. Good job.

Mitch was good. But has he ever done a song without his guitar?

Drew was just blah. I don't get him at all. He bores me. He never seems to show emotion or connect with the song.

Earl makes me laugh. But I don't think that should be what the Idol makes you feel.

Mookie put on a performance. Not sure about all the record scratching stuff. But I liked him.

Mookie and Theo were my faves of the night.

Drew is who I would like to go home.

But I fear more for Amberly. She went in the dreaded First Spot. And I don't think she was memorable. Alberta might be voting to save Theo and Earl after last week and forget to throw the votes to her.

So we all seem to agree that Drew should go home. How large of a voting population can Collingwood have to keep him around?

Then again, Amberly is from a town called Seven Persons, so really, with her away that is only 6 voters, right? (do the contestants have access to phone or text messaging to vote for themselves after the show???)

Theo is from Lethbridge, not too far from Seven Persons, so not sure how the regional voting would go. Earl is from Lloydmister, which is north and could get him the Edmonton vote. Calgary would probably go towards Theo and Amberly.

Interesting that VFTW has picked Mitch as opposed to Earl as speculated above.

LAST EDITED ON 08-13-08 AT 08:48 AM (EST)

The medley at the beginning is very painful, especially Amberly's part. OMG, I thought she could sing.

Ben calls Mookie, Theo and Mitch out to the stage, and tells the other three to stay on the couch. BUT he switches it up and those called to the stage are the safe ones. This is very cruel. Those on the stage look shocked, but those on the couch are devasted, having thought they were safe (DW and I saw this coming, as Ben distinctively wasn't saying who was top or bottom).

So who goes home between Drew, Amberly, and Earl? The answer is Amberly. So now all the girls are gone. See my analysis of home town voting above which explains why she is the one going! She just looks rocked to go from thinking she was safe on the couch to going home.

The only one more disappointed than her? That would be me, when Ben announced that next week will be Beatles songs. Someone else might have to post the analysis!

I was expecting Ben to separate them into two groups of 3 this week. The minute he told some to join him on stage without telling the ones on the couch they were safe... well I saw it coming. Too bad it didn't seem the Idols caught on. Mookie didn't even look like he understood he was safe at first. Although I have to say I was happy to see Drew in the bottom 3 for once. But I saw Amberly's exit coming. Too bad it wasn't Drew who left.

beatles - blech

Sounds like it is judges choices.

#1 - Earl - Help From my Friends

Judges loved it.
+ I thought it was a very good performance.

#2 - Mookie - Come Together
(playing electric guitar)

Judges - "possibly best version of that song we've ever heard"
+I liked the way he changed up the song. I'm not sure how voters will like that arrangement.

#3 - Theo - The Long and Winding Road
(at the piano)

Judges - they swooned over his performance.
+I say "wow"

#4 - Mitch - In My Life
(holding accoustic guitar, maybe a few plucks at the end)

Judges - "adorable", "all having great nights", lots of praising the whole final 5
+I am mixed on this. Well done, but will it be vote-enticing?

#5 Drew - While My Guitar Gently Weeps
(electric guitar)

Judges - great re-invention of song. "Phenominal"
+Maybe I have heard that song too many times, but but even an animated Drew (animated for him) just didn't catch my attention.

Drew will be helped with the pimp-spot.

Bottom two should be Mitch and Drew, IMO.

I am kind of shocked myself. But Earl was my favourite tonight. I really thought he was the best. I enjoyed Mookie, and Drew was okay for Drew. Theo and Mitch actually bored me. I am still waiting for Mitch to do something without the guitar. I think I was looking at his funny faces all during the song.

...Mookie.

How can Drew still be in this thing over Mookie? I can't imagine what Collingwood must be doing to get that level of voting. Once again Toronto just doesn't get behind its Idols.

On another note, Mookie's farewell performance was the best good-bye performance I have ever seen on any Idol show. He didn't just choke his way through the song, but rather played the he77 out of it. He was so into it that the other Idols, who usually come out to join in, had to stand back. AND then Mookie finished by smashing his guitar. The last image I saw was him looking back at his broken guitar (which was an awesome guitar) and it sure looked like he was thinking "that was cool, but now my guitar is busted".

I hope Jake is right and Mookie does have a future in music, as the guy can perform.

It was interesting that before the announcement Jake told Mookie to call him on Monday if he was booted (or not). Nobody told Drew to call them if he was out.

Mookie was an entertainer. He never bored me. Unlike some of the others.

This season started out so bright and hopeful with the Top 24. And then we seemed to lose alot of the bright spots as the time went on. Not sure the ones left are any better than most years. Too bad.

I agree to some extent, but still think that Theo is head and shoulders above all the rest. Mookie was a great entertainer, but Theo is the class of the field. I can't understand the others still being around, except for the regional voting blocks.

I agree Theo is definitely the most talented and deserves to be there. But he does get boring at times. I don't think the other 3 really deserve to be in the Top 4. They have moments of brightness and then they fall again.

(playing guitar)
Anne told him to work on his breathing.

Jake - sounded flat
Sass - breathing = rhythm, and good improvement
Farley - needs more edge
Zack - "Perry Como-ish"

+ Anne Murray songs won't be exciting. I am intrigued to see who will make this interesting. IMO Mitch didn't.

Sass - liked that he listened and looked at audience
Farley - liked soulful version
Zack - didn't get it, and thought he meandered
Jake - thought he drew the audience in.

Anne feels he thinks about his guitar too much, and needs to focus more on singing. She tells hims to keep the guitar simpler.

+he seems more into the song this week. Actually smiling while he is singing.
Farley - best vocal performance yet
Jake - really good (Teletubbies theme?)
Jake - best on show by mile
Sass - thought he sang very well

I heard on the radio that there was a concert for him in Collingwood this week. Population of Collingwood = 15,000, and they got 10,000 people out. Wow.

Jake - was sharp off the top. lacking dynamics. Sing well, but not dynamic.
Sass - dark material of song contrasted well with shining delivery
Farley - lacked angst to match the song
Zack - bad song choice - not how to win Idol.

Farley - lighter shade of blues, but pretty good vocal
Zack - didn't go after the title with that performance
Jake - looks better without beard and in better clothes. Sounded like Jim Cuddy, and that is a good thing.
Sass - thought he pulled it off well.

I am surprised he lasted this long, but more surprised that he goes home tonight. How do Drew and Mitch keep hanging on? Who the heck is voting??

For the record, if Mookie's final performance last week was the best ever, Earl's is the worst. He goes out into the audience and tries (unsuccessfully) to start a train with audience members. Then he jumps around the stage and pretty much forgets about his song.

All I can think is that Canada has given up on this show, and that the regional voting is still having an impact. Early lost because he was splitting the Alberta vote with Theo. Now there are 3 distinct geographies left. I would think that each gets their own geography, and the winner is whoever can get the rest of the votes (assuming someone else is watching!)

I did hear on a Barrie radio station that Drew won their new talent competition a few years back. So he has some experience with competitions. My DW just doesn't understand how he is still there though (neither do I).

I'm sooooooo glad to see Earl go. I didn't get him at all. Just sounded like poor drunken karaoke everytime he sang.

I have to admit though, that Drew has been growing on me. I didn't like him at all prior to top 10, but I think he deserves to be there way more than Earl or Mitch based on his progression and getting better over the past few weeks.

That said, I think Theo is miles ahead of the other two at this point.

I watched tonight, but didn't have the energy (nor did I get the energy from the perfomances) to type out the performances.

My comments:
- Bryan Adams has some great songs, but I am not really into hearing them sung by others
- Drew actually did pretty well tonight.
- Theo had one great, one meh performance.
- I didn't think Mitch was good at all tonight.

In my opinion, Mitch should go home after tonight's performances, leaving Theo and Drew for the final 2.

I agree with you about who should go home. The best performances were the first two: Drew's first and Theo's first.

For a guy that I thought shouldn't make it past the top 8, Drew is really impressing me. He's probably improved the most (though he still hasn't caught up to Theo) and has a very strong past 3 weeks. I really liked his version of Cuts Like a Knife.

I still think Mookie should have been in the top 3. He was a great performer and would have done well with Bryan Adams.

Aw, okay, I'll jump in. Can't stand to watch you suffer over here all by your lonesome.

ITA with your DW that Drew had no appeal and the regional thing has got him this far. I think the appeal he has NOW is there only because better performers are gone and there are fewer competitors left for comparison.

I miss Mookie the mostest.

Mitch is the VFTW candidate. It's the only reason he's hung in there so long, but he must have some hometown support because he's never been in the bottom three. Theo, inarguably the best of the group, HAS been in the bottom three, which, coupled with his subpar second performance last night, doesn't bode well for Theo tonight.

It would be very sad indeed if Theo got the boot because I think he would do very well commercially, whereas the other two are just meh. But it would not surprise me if that's what happens tonight.

118. "RE: Final 3 - results"
Bryan Adams played a few songs. He really belts it out, but I wonder what the judges would say. Perhaps a little pitchy in places?

They also spent a lot of time showing each of the F3 on their hometown visits. Interesting that some station in Alberta noted during Theo's visit that every other Idol contestant that has visited that station has won (Kalan Porter nd Melissa O'Neill). That should be foreshadowing.

One fan comment that amazed me was from a Drew fan - she said she had drained 3 phone batteries voting. So basically me voting 10 times is just a drop in the bucket. Wow.

Anyway, the real purpose for last night's show was results, and unfortunately for Drew is was time to go. He played well on the way out. I think he has been in the industry a while, and the attention from this experience won't hurt him at all.

So the F2 are Mitch and Theo. The latter has a smooth-as-silk voice, and the former, er, doesn't. Should be a slam dunk for Alberta to get their third winner. I'll likely send 10 votes for Theo, though they won't mean much!

Mitch wins the coin toss and chooses to go first. I wouldn't have done that.

Mitch - Paris by Gordie Sampson
(playing guitar)
I don't know this song. C'mon Mitch, time to connect with the audience and this isn't the way!
The judges seem to like it and his folksiness.

Theo - Good Mother by Jan Arden
(playing piano)
Theo has previously been complimented for picking songs that female vocalists have done because the become his fairly easily. He did a nice job with this.
The judges liked it. Very strong vocal performance.

I score round 1 to Theo.

121. "Second Songs - potential singles"
Mitch - Where We Begin
(playing acoustic guitar)

Nice enough song. Mitch's voice is distinctive as always. Not sure that I found that a song I would want to own or care about hearing on the radio. A bit Meh to me.

Farley - good to sing it out loud
Zack - consistent tone - definably Mitch
Jake - didn't feel Mitch "sold the song"
Sass - despite Jake's comments, she loves Mitch

Theo - Sing
(back at the piano)

DW - "if he doesn't win I will be really ticked"
I thought he did that great. Mellower song than last year's winner, but excellent vocal.

Zack - did everything he could with that song
Jake - didn't love the song, but loved the performance
Sass - killer performance
Farley - his voice is a prism, covering all the ranges of the rainbow.

Round 2 to Theo also.

122. "Third Songs - judges choices"
Mitch - If by Bread
(playing acoustic guitar)

DW - "sounds like Kermit the Frog singing that Rainbow song."
IMO - just awful

Jake - hit the last note
Sass - pitchy Mitchy, but charming job of song
Farley - the pitchiness is his style
Zack - sees in Mitch's eyes that he didn't like it, but Zack says he would be a good idol.

Theo - I Wanna Know What Love is by Foreigner
(again at the piano)

The judges certainly gave him a better song than they gave Mitch. Theo doesn't disappoint with another great performance.

Sass - not favourite arrangement of song, but great delivery
Farley - can't go wrong
Zack - not into song like usual, but best male vocalist ever on show
Jake - sang it great. Final 2 are both great, but different, and it will be the audience preference of styles that will decide.

If Jake is correct, then the Canadian Idol has to be Theo Tams. IMO he has been the best virtually every week since the Top 20.

Big show last night. Lots of recraps and performances by:
- the top 10 (mostly not so good),
- a great performance by Hedley,
- John Legend,
- Mariah seeming to lip sync through a couple of songs,
- Brian Melo singing (not a catching song, but true Brian),
the top 2 doing a very nice song

Then they finally got to the results...

After 36 million votes this season, the winner is...

is...

Theo Tams.

Fully deserving winner. Interesting that when Zack asked him (the sweaty him!) in his audition why he hadn't auditioned in previous years, he said he was waiting until he was ready. Well, Theo, you clearly were ready this time.

But I did stop to watch all of Mookie. I am interested to see where he takes his music career. I think he was the most entertaining (and I mean entertaining in a good way).

Theo clearly had the best voice. What he will do with it begs to be seen.
