"AI7 4/22 Top 6 East Coast Spoiler Thread " |
Please keep all sigpic-free discussion of the caterwauling outbreak that stretches across several decades, numerous shows, and a fair amount of cultural significances that's about to be forever destroyed until 11 p.m. EDT. By that time, the West Coast should have gotten to see Jason figure out how declaring himself as Mumbojerry while making Paula into Rumpleteaser counts as an inspirational song, or at least one of the world's more interesting kiss-up moves. (And there goes MC off into another fantasy. Only with fur.) ALW=Always Leaves Weeping. You'd really think he would have known better, wouldn't you?Now -- as with last week, I'm not the host: I just launch the thread while Snidget's away. So if anyone's quick enough (and good at IDing titles) to launch each singer's subsection as they start to perform and capture the judges' comments afterwards, feel free to take over the official hosting duties. (One host per thread, please, otherwise it gets a little Paulaesque.) Remember: it feels so good when it stops...

7. "Syesha: "One Rock and Roll too Many" from Starlight Express" |
LAST EDITED ON 04-22-08 AT 09:15 PM (EST)Discusses w/ALW if she should do pop or musical theater...he doesn't get what she's asking (actually, he just thinks it's a dumb question) and tells her to be animated. Edited to add: In the rush to keep up, didn't have time to add my 2 cents. Syesha, sweetie. The difference between "pop" and "musical theater" is a little more complex than just ANIMATED or NOT ANIMATED. When you're singing an up-tempo little ditty like that, you should DEFINITELY be animated regardless of the genre you are trying to fit into. Idiot.

Pretty red cocktail dress, her hair is actually done up.Strikes me as a number from something like "Ain't Misbehavin" or "Sophisticated Ladies" rather than pop, but at l Randy: I feel this is your element, best to date, could be a huge Broadway star. Paula: Not surprising as this is your love, and you're good at it. Brought the house down Simon: That was very sexy. He thinks this was one of her strongest performances, showed personality for the first time. (shut up Paula)

I really think that it was just a very bad choice.I get the feeling that he say the list, said, "oh, I've heard this one" and picked it. It was so, so wrong for him. He tried. I'll give him that. He could have done something from "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat" and done it very well. I was thinking "Any Dream will Do" would have suited his voice and his style.

He admitted early on that he didn't know ANY of the musicals, not just "Cats". My kids don't know "Cats", so it's not that surprising to me.As for him not being "fully there", he's no worse than David A. He didn't even start singing until he got into college, so he's not had that much experience, even less that David A. Certainly not as much as Carly, David C., etc. who've already had recordings or sung with bands or whatever. The love for this guy, at least from the folks I know, is his freshness and uniqueness. He's NOT the same old same old from every other version of Idol. Almost everyone of the others cna and has been compared to past Idols - Cook/Daughtry, Syesha/any diva-type, etc. Jason doesn't have a comparison like that.

Randy: Yo yo, check it out dawg, check it out. Likes that she listened to ALW, believe what you're singing. Vocally a little tough.Paula: You must never start and stop. You didn't over act, you were you. The broken vocal stuff was emotion. Simon: This is why I love live tv, but it threw you, so tense, you were straining, quite uncomfortable. You'll be disappointed when you watch this back. Delivery is a little stilted...she's over-enunciating. Yep, lyrics in MT can be a little more dense. False start -- oops. A little messier than the last time she did that. She's delivering the emotion though. Vocals are only ok. She really doesn't breathe well.

52. "Sharing a brush with greatness..." |
LAST EDITED ON 04-22-08 AT 09:07 PM (EST)Years ago, there was a concert tour of "The Music of Andrew Lloyd Webber," and Milwaukee was one of the first stops. Out in the bars, my friends & I met a bunch of the cast, and they put aside house tickets for us - we went to see them**, and were supposed to meet up & go for cocktails afterward. My friend & I, being theater idiots (meaning we work in theaters more than attending), just went right backstage instead of waiting outside the stage door like normal people. Wandering around, we went into the stairwell, and this tiny, sweaty, odd-looking little man was walking through. Of course, it was Mr. Webber. D'oh! Much to my surprise, I was thoroughly star-struck, and only managed to squeek out some lame compliment. He was gracious (for the 3.5 seconds that we "talked"). My brush with greatness. **Concert was amazing - there's really something about hearing those incredible scores played by a HUGE live orchestra.

Horrifying, beyond awful, hate, hate, hate.
Especially the lame beat, the cheap runs and the cheesy key-change. HATE. I don't think ALW looked happy.

I love her voice when she uses it....and I think she did tonight. I know she messed up on some lyrics, but she did it with conviction so I don't care...

And except for the people who know the lyrics word for word (slowly raises hand...yes I am a show tunes freak), you wouldn't be able to tell cause she breezed right through it.

Get the dvd of the remake from 2001 -- it's pretty cool. The concept is much more theatrical rather than hippies in the desert. Not that I don't love the original too, but it's nice to see bigger voices & different concept.

I loved her tonight. She had spunk, and was totally into the song. I had rather hoped she would try for the high notes in the chorus cause I love them, but I guess she chose a safer route. I thought she looked absolutely lovely, and she gets an A+ for the t-shirt!

91. "RE: Bottom 3?" |
I bet Syesha will be bottom 3 too. She just doesn't seem to have the fan base, and she went first. Plus, her performance (while certainly decent) had a really different feel from the rest - kinda the least ALW-ish of the bunch. I kept expecting Nell Carter to come out & make it a duet. Except that she's dead. (Nell, not Syesha)

I'm impressed. Here's a guy who has been changing everything up to suit his rocker style, and on a night when he could reasonably do that, he takes "Music of the Night" and does it straight-up. I didn't know he had that in him. I don't know if he was really THAT good or if the element of surprise is factoring into it. He's playing this contest correctly. That was a smart choice - I never would have made that choice for him but he went against type and it paid off.

96. "A comment on gender-switching, for what it's worth" |
I don't typically have a problem with singing opposite-gender songs, but I'm not surprised that ALW commented on this a couple of times tonight.Had the opportunity to meet Stephen Schwartz once, and he told a story about hearing a man sing "Lion Tamer" from "Magic Show" in a cabaret. He was HORRIFIED. He went on and on about how inappropriate he thought it was, and how upset he was. And this was years afterward. He said that he (and musical theater composers in general) writes for his characters, and while writing that song, he felt so connected to the woman that sings it, that he just couldn't wrap his head around hearing a man do it. I gotta agree that unless it's a song that can really stand alone, completely independent from the book, crossing genders with MT music is really dangerous.

In the musical Phantom Think of Me is somewhat of a duet between Christine and Raoul. Christine starts the song and mid way Raoul sings his part (From his box seat in the theater). Christine finishes the song.

119. "Stupid theme" |
LAST EDITED ON 04-22-08 AT 11:52 PM (EST)I'm sick to death of these stupid "theme" weeks that do nothing to showcase what an "idol" is going to sound like. Yeah, AWL is a big, famous dude, but you VERY rarely ever hear any of his stuff on the radio. So why make these guys and gals suffer through having to sing it, and us having to endure it?This ain't Broadway Idol.

Except. . . How many of them have wound up on Broadway? Fantasia, Diana DeGarmo, Frenchy, Amy Davis, Constantine, Clay Aiken, Tamyra Gray, Anthony Federov (!) Jennifer Hudson, too. I think "Dreamgirls" counts, even though it was Broadway-on-film. I actually think it was a good theme week, but I also think there's some great music to be found on Broadway.
