Reality TV World Message Board Forums
PLEASE NOTE: The Reality TV World Message Boards are filled with desperate attention-seekers pretending to be one big happy PG/PG13-rated family. Don't be fooled. Trying to get everyone to agree with you is like herding cats, but intolerance for other viewpoints is NOT welcome and respect for other posters IS required at all times. Jump in and play, and you'll soon find out how easy it is to fit in, but save your drama for your mama. All members are encouraged to read the complete guidelines. As entertainment critic Roger Ebert once said, "If you disagree with something I write, tell me so, argue with me, correct me--but don't tell me to shut up. That's not the American way."

"AI7 4/22 Top 6 East Coast Spoiler Thread "
Please keep all sigpic-free discussion of the caterwauling outbreak that stretches across several decades, numerous shows, and a fair amount of cultural significances that's about to be forever destroyed until 11 p.m. EDT. By that time, the West Coast should have gotten to see Jason figure out how declaring himself as Mumbojerry while making Paula into Rumpleteaser counts as an inspirational song, or at least one of the world's more interesting kiss-up moves. (And there goes MC off into another fantasy. Only with fur.)

ALW=Always Leaves Weeping. You'd really think he would have known better, wouldn't you?

Now -- as with last week, I'm not the host: I just launch the thread while Snidget's away. So if anyone's quick enough (and good at IDing titles) to launch each singer's subsection as they start to perform and capture the judges' comments afterwards, feel free to take over the official hosting duties. (One host per thread, please, otherwise it gets a little Paulaesque.)

Remember: it feels so good when it stops...

Haven't been checking, so haven't had time to mentally digest this list yet...must say oy vey about a couple of them.

Of COURSE Archie picked the big, sickly-sweet SOPRANO song from Phantom.

Man-o-man Jason, you'd better pull this off.

Carly CAN'T be doing Superstar, can she? Please say this is wrong and she's doing...oh..."I Don't Know How to Love Him"

Ryan asks Simon about how he usually uses "Broadway" in a negative way...good question.

It is a dangerous theme - to pull off the song & not sound too much like you're in the middle of Act II.

LAST EDITED ON 04-22-08 AT 09:15 PM (EST)

Discusses w/ALW if she should do pop or musical theater...he doesn't get what she's asking (actually, he just thinks it's a dumb question) and tells her to be animated.

Edited to add: In the rush to keep up, didn't have time to add my 2 cents. Syesha, sweetie. The difference between "pop" and "musical theater" is a little more complex than just ANIMATED or NOT ANIMATED.

When you're singing an up-tempo little ditty like that, you should DEFINITELY be animated regardless of the genre you are trying to fit into. Idiot.

Pretty red cocktail dress, her hair is actually done up.

Strikes me as a number from something like "Ain't Misbehavin" or "Sophisticated Ladies" rather than pop, but at l

Randy: I feel this is your element, best to date, could be a huge Broadway star.

Paula: Not surprising as this is your love, and you're good at it. Brought the house down

Simon: That was very sexy. He thinks this was one of her strongest performances, showed personality for the first time.

(shut up Paula)

He's nervous (and cute)

ALW (like other musical theater composers) is surprised that a man is singing this.

Isn't sure that Jason gets it. I'm sure Jason doesn't.

This song has a huge range, Jason doesn't. Open your eyes sweetie. He rushed a little bit. Not horrifying, but I'll have to vote alot tonight.

Randy: Vocally, a train wreck, but liked that the dude with the dreads sang it.

Paula: People are used to hearing divas sing this, but she thinks it was wise for Jason to do it, identifies his unique being. pop ballad. (and Randy thinks Jason is beautiful)

Simon: Felt like the longest 2 minutes. Came over as a young guy being forced by Mum & Dad to sing at a wedding. Jason was miserable, Simon was miserable. Not his style.

I really think that it was just a very bad choice.

I get the feeling that he say the list, said, "oh, I've heard this one" and picked it. It was so, so wrong for him.

He tried. I'll give him that.

He could have done something from "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat" and done it very well. I was thinking "Any Dream will Do" would have suited his voice and his style.

That was one of the worst American Idols performances ever (excluding bad auditions in the early rounds). He didn't understand the song, it was completely out of his range, and he was clearly terrified up there. And he will never live down his comment, "I didn't know it was a cat singing the song!" Cats was one of the longest running musical in history - how could he not know? My wife and I laughed for about ten minutes after that one.

And how about that painful conversation with Ryan before the song? Can he say something coherent? I don't get the love for this guy. He seems, well, not fully there.

He admitted early on that he didn't know ANY of the musicals, not just "Cats". My kids don't know "Cats", so it's not that surprising to me.

As for him not being "fully there", he's no worse than David A. He didn't even start singing until he got into college, so he's not had that much experience, even less that David A. Certainly not as much as Carly, David C., etc. who've already had recordings or sung with bands or whatever.

The love for this guy, at least from the folks I know, is his freshness and uniqueness. He's NOT the same old same old from every other version of Idol. Almost everyone of the others cna and has been compared to past Idols - Cook/Daughtry, Syesha/any diva-type, etc. Jason doesn't have a comparison like that.

Randy: Yo yo, check it out dawg, check it out. Likes that she listened to ALW, believe what you're singing. Vocally a little tough.

Paula: You must never start and stop. You didn't over act, you were you. The broken vocal stuff was emotion.

Simon: This is why I love live tv, but it threw you, so tense, you were straining, quite uncomfortable. You'll be disappointed when you watch this back.

Delivery is a little stilted...she's over-enunciating. Yep, lyrics in MT can be a little more dense. False start -- oops. A little messier than the last time she did that. She's delivering the emotion though. Vocals are only ok. She really doesn't breathe well.

Qualifier - I love Faith Hill.

I think that Brooke looks like Faith Hill when Faith first started out but there's something off about Brooke, aside from the talent.

So to have her remind me of Faith Hill but in a Bizarro World kindof way is bothersome.

Meh.

I find the way she bobs her head around very distracting when she sings. She does sort of an ice-cream-cone-licking move all the time, and it's very odd.

She was overly tense with that song - maybe she interpreted it differently in rehearsal, but I believe she was over-thinking it in the performance.

52. "Sharing a brush with greatness..."
LAST EDITED ON 04-22-08 AT 09:07 PM (EST)

Years ago, there was a concert tour of "The Music of Andrew Lloyd Webber," and Milwaukee was one of the first stops.

Out in the bars, my friends & I met a bunch of the cast, and they put aside house tickets for us - we went to see them**, and were supposed to meet up & go for cocktails afterward.

My friend & I, being theater idiots (meaning we work in theaters more than attending), just went right backstage instead of waiting outside the stage door like normal people.

Wandering around, we went into the stairwell, and this tiny, sweaty, odd-looking little man was walking through. Of course, it was Mr. Webber. D'oh! Much to my surprise, I was thoroughly star-struck, and only managed to squeek out some lame compliment. He was gracious (for the 3.5 seconds that we "talked").

My brush with greatness.

**Concert was amazing - there's really something about hearing those incredible scores played by a HUGE live orchestra.

Icky poo.

I don't understand why he picked this song. There is a huge huge catalogue of stuff out there that he could have chosen, stuff that he could have really done well, and he picked this little inoffensive break-up song from "Phantom" which isn't even a particularly meaty part of that show. I would have preferred he do "Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again."

Sadly, I can see this becoming a top ten hit for him, because it has the kind of lyrics that little girls imagine themselves singing to the boys who aren't interested in them. (I know, I'm sure I have it on more than a few "pining for you" mix tapes from my own teenaged forlorn love-lost years.)

He sounded good, as usual. I'm just unimpressed. I know, I know. I'm not his target demographic.

How do you go through the audition process, claim you wanted to do this forever, and not know that there will be a Broadway night! These folks have months to come up with at least one Broadway song - or at least familiarize yourself with one play.

Phantom
Hair
Jesus Christ Superstar
Rent

You could dig something up from any of them.

A remake would not do. It's got to be the original.

Little story for ya - In the final scene where the actors are leaving on the bus and they're looking back as if they've left JC behind. The bus drives away and there's a sunset scene of the desert. You can see a shadow of a small figure walking across the bottom of the screen.

This bothered me everytime I saw the movie and I promised myself if I was to ever meet Norm Jewison I would ask him about it.

Two years ago I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Jewison and I asked him if that figure was a stray crew member or was it intentional. He knew the shot and he told me "That figure was never shot by me". *chills*

Yeah, what's with that, especially Simon, he's really down on Carly. Everyone makes out she is this veteran who's been around forever and had ample opportunities. The girl's only 24, and it seems everyone in the final 6 has had their fair share of opportunities too. Pretty level playing field, IMHO.

Thank you, ALW, for stopping Carly from doing "All I Ask of You." All I would have asked would have been some Botox to relax her furrowed brow.

I was glad to hear she was doing something from JCS. I *love* that show. I just dig it SO much when chicks sing the part of Judas. She's got the right kind of voice and performance-style for it. The Judas part in "Superstar" is good, although I was hoping she'd do "Heaven on their Minds". That probably would have been too much. Considering how she fumbled the lyrics on "Superstar" I guess I'm glad she didn't tackle "Heaven."

I liked the verses. Didn't like the chorus. Not sure if that is due to her or the arrangement.

Overall I think it was a good choice for her. At least she picked up the pace of the show a bit.

(really? Music of the Night? At least he knows MT)

ALW: It's the most sensual song he's written, so Cookie has to imagine that ALW is the most gorgeous 17 year old girl he's ever seen (hee!)

ALW: He might just bring this off if he comes out of himself.

Randy: If you can really sing, you can sing anything - amazing, molten hot lava, blah blah blah

Paula: Proved he's well-rounded, beautiful instrument.

Simon: Made the most of the song, not the side of David that he likes, prefers the grit, but he made the most of it.

Interesting choice to do this straight. Hmmm. He pulled it off (though his big 'be' was a little strained). I guess it's good that he showed us that he can actually sing, but he may get spanked for not "being David." I do still love him.

I bet Syesha will be bottom 3 too. She just doesn't seem to have the fan base, and she went first. Plus, her performance (while certainly decent) had a really different feel from the rest - kinda the least ALW-ish of the bunch. I kept expecting Nell Carter to come out & make it a duet. Except that she's dead. (Nell, not Syesha)

Hate this song and most newer Broadway songs. However this performance was stunning.

It might actually be my favorite from this guy. He is definately the smartest contestant ever to be on this show. He showed his voice off, which some may have forgotten he has a really good one.

Take that screechy, scary Carly!

I'm impressed.

Here's a guy who has been changing everything up to suit his rocker style, and on a night when he could reasonably do that, he takes "Music of the Night" and does it straight-up.

I didn't know he had that in him. I don't know if he was really THAT good or if the element of surprise is factoring into it.

He's playing this contest correctly. That was a smart choice - I never would have made that choice for him but he went against type and it paid off.

96. "A comment on gender-switching, for what it's worth"
I don't typically have a problem with singing opposite-gender songs, but I'm not surprised that ALW commented on this a couple of times tonight.

Had the opportunity to meet Stephen Schwartz once, and he told a story about hearing a man sing "Lion Tamer" from "Magic Show" in a cabaret. He was HORRIFIED. He went on and on about how inappropriate he thought it was, and how upset he was. And this was years afterward. He said that he (and musical theater composers in general) writes for his characters, and while writing that song, he felt so connected to the woman that sings it, that he just couldn't wrap his head around hearing a man do it.

I gotta agree that unless it's a song that can really stand alone, completely independent from the book, crossing genders with MT music is really dangerous.

In the musical Phantom Think of Me is somewhat of a duet between Christine and Raoul. Christine starts the song and mid way Raoul sings his part (From his box seat in the theater). Christine finishes the song.

He may respond to her in the action, but it's really her song.

But not just Archie - Jason was out of whack too.

Though Jason picked out of ignorance, while Archie picked because he loves to sing diva songs. (though this is supposed to be the 'actual' type of diva, not the Mariah kind )

Carly went against gender, too. She sang the part of Judas.

ALW said it in the beginning of the show - he writes with the story and character in mind, so gender-bending the songs is probably really hard for him.

Jason didn't even know that "Memory" was from Cats. That song has become so popular on its own that I'll bet that a lot of people don't know that. I didn't mind the gender switch on that one so much as it bothered me that this young, sweet faced kid was singing a song about being old, alone, and past one's prime.

LAST EDITED ON 04-22-08 AT 11:52 PM (EST)

I'm sick to death of these stupid "theme" weeks that do nothing to showcase what an "idol" is going to sound like. Yeah, AWL is a big, famous dude, but you VERY rarely ever hear any of his stuff on the radio. So why make these guys and gals suffer through having to sing it, and us having to endure it?

This ain't Broadway Idol.

Except. . .

How many of them have wound up on Broadway? Fantasia, Diana DeGarmo, Frenchy, Amy Davis, Constantine, Clay Aiken, Tamyra Gray, Anthony Federov (!)

Jennifer Hudson, too. I think "Dreamgirls" counts, even though it was Broadway-on-film.

I actually think it was a good theme week, but I also think there's some great music to be found on Broadway.

How many of those you listed are actually winners of American Idol? Just the one.

There is great music on Broadway, but 99% of it's not gonna be played on any radio station that drives CD sales.
