"Top 10 - Birth Year Songs - Rankings & Thoughts"
LAST EDITED ON 03-26-08 AT 08:23 AM (EST)

I think this was the best night so far for AI 7. On with my rankings and thoughts.

1 - David Cook - Billie Jean - This boy is on a major roll. He is the smartest, he is the most unique, he is the most cretive. Yes, it was a versoin of Chris Cornell's version, but he pulled it off brilliantly. His only roadblock to winning it all is David A's hordes of fans.
2 - Brooke - Every Breath You Take - Singing at the piano is your element. You took a VERY familiar song that has been done a lot, and somehow freshened it with just the piano and your voice. Unlike the judges, I liked the 2nd half with the band and the tempo kicked up.
3 - Michael - Queen medley - Yes, Michael is not a favorite of mine, but he did well with Queen, and i think perhaps did the first mini-medley in AI history. Good risk, and it paid off.
4 - Carly - Total Elipse - I thought she did it brilliantly. She has an amazing lower register. The tone is just silky in her voice at the lower range.
5 - Chikezie - Again, i disagree with the judges. This boy can sing, and like Brooke at the piano, throwback R&B is his element and this ballad was MUCH better than the one earlier in the competition.
6 - David A - Agree 100% with Simon. This song choice was out of left field, and it was 'Stage Dad's' selection. You could tell by David's reaction after Simon's comments. I didn't like it, and had never heard the song before. I don't think anyone had.
7 - Jason - Not much to say. Somewhat boring.
8 - Kristy - OK performance. Again, somewhat boring.
9 - Syesha - You bore me every week. Nothing unique or special about you.
10 - Ramielle - Alone - You started out quite well, but you couldn't handle the big chorus, so this made the song too big for you. Combine that with the opening slot, and I think you're going home.

geekboy

DAMN, my typing sucked last night. Apologies.

1. "RE: Top 10 - Birth Year Songs - Rankings & Thoughts"
1)David Cook - Damn that was awesome. Best Idol performance in a couple of years

2)Michael Johns - OK, now I get it! He can only sing Queen songs

3)Carly Smithson - Consistantly in the top third but never quite the best

4)Easy-Cheese - Don't know what the judges were listening to, this was pretty good

5)Brooke White - This really didn't wow me and I think I may be tiring of her

6)Syesha Mercado - This week we reach another grim milestone as Syesha gives the 4000th standard Diva performance in Idol history

7)Jason Castro - To truly "get" Jason, you must understand the terms chronic, blunt and schwag

8)The Iguana God Of Pre-Pubescent Girls - I am growing to hate this boy a little more each week

9)Krist E. Lee - Musical demagoguery repulses me

10)Ramiele Malubay - She's so hopelessly outclassed its almost cruel to string her along week after week

OK, now I get it! He can only sing Queen songs

The problem though, is that he ain't no Freddy Mercury. To me, he comes across as a poor man's version, and that's never a good thing on Idol. To his benefit, I doubt that a lot of Idol voter have any idea whatsoever who Freddy Mercury is.

I think you totally hit the nail on the head with this thought. I did have to look up demagoguery, but you are totally correct, and great word by the way.

2. "RE: Top 10 - Birth Year Songs - Rankings & Thoughts"
I was severely underwhelmed this week (again)! I think I was distracted by the arrival of the Official Paula Abdul Seal Clapping Gloves (OPASCG)

1 - Carly - Total Elipse - C'mon Carly, we're rooting for you, but it seems like always the bridesmaid, never the bride. I see glimmers of the potential, but it never quite gets there. She's come oh so close, but still my fave.

2 - Michael - Queen medley - Much much better Bruce. In case you didn't get the memo, avoid Freddie in future.

3 - David Cook - Billie Jean - I think I'm going to stop calling him Ick-boy, but will call him Melon-boy in homage to his noggin. It was good/okay. I was disappointed it wasn't an original arrangement. His performance was good.

HUUUUUUUGE GAP

4 - Brooke - Every Breath You Take - WTF? What a horrible arrangement of a brilliant song. She is so boring and predictable. I liked her hair.

5 - Chikezie - Oh what a surprise, back to Luther-esque. He sings well, but won't be around for long, too dull. Cute baby though.

6 - David A - I feel so sorry for Iguana-boy. He has pushy stage-parents written all over his face. He has obviously been churning out ballads endlessly much to the delight of his parents, but they won't even go out and buy the kid a chapstick, it's criminal!

7 - Jason - Yawn. I can't watch him sing, bad facial expressions. Looked like he was straining tonight. Ex-lax works well.

8 - Syesha - She's got a good voice, about as good as a million other people. But at least she really likes herself.

9 - Ramielle - Alone - She must be really, really good at karaoke. Would be last if it wasn't for the manipulative DAW.

10 - Kristy - Desperate manipulative performance. She went below the bottom of the list pulling a stunt like this. Shame on you.

3. "RE: Top 10 - Birth Year Songs - Rankings & Thoughts"
Overall not a bad night, but only one performance blew me away.

1 - David Cook - "Billie Jean" - Yes I've heard the Chris Cornell version. That said he consistently picks songs and arrangements (whether his or someone elses) that best showcase his talent. And the boy has talent! There is a raw emotion to his voice that just resonates with me. If this indeed is a talent competition he should win hands down. In fact he may be my favorite AI contestant ever. Would buy his CD!

***************************************************************

2 - Chikezie - "If Only For One Night" - I don't get Simon. He changes it up two weeks in a row and then plays it straight and is called cheesy and unoriginal? Chikezie proved once again he's one of the most versatile and talented performers on this show. He did an old school song (a very good one) and did a faithful version which showed off his vocals. I liked it and I like Chikezie. Hope America does too as I want to see him around for awhile.

***********

3 - Carly Smithson - "Total Eclipse of the Heart" - I'm not a big Carly fan but I thought she sung well tonight, except for the ending.

4 - Brooke White - "Every Breath You Take" - Other than the boo-boo I thought the first part of the song was great. Didn't like it as much when the band kicked in, but she is very good in her niche.

5 - Michael Johns - "We Will Rock You/We Are the Champions" - Energetic performance and an improvement for him, but he still hasn't wowed me.

6 - Syesha Mercado - "If I Were Your Woman" - Nice performance from her but can she distinguish herself from past Idol Divas?

***********

7 - Jason Castro - "Fragile" - I didn't think he was bad. However I didn't think he was memorable either.

8 - David Archuleta - "You're the Voice" - Dad must like this song. I don't like David at all, but this was at least better than his last attempt at an uptempo song.

9 - Ramiele Malubay - "Alone" - So you were sick. How does that explain you underwhelming me every other week? She's way out of her league.

10 - Kristy Lee Cook -- "God Bless the USA" - Congratulations, you won't be going tomorrow night. However I see through your manipulative performance! If that wasn't a desperate attempt to rally your fan base (see patriotic country music fans) then I don't know what is.

4. "RE: Top 10 - Birth Year Songs - Rankings & Thoughts"
Interesting week! I don't think anybody did great, despite all the love for David Cook's performance, which was totally derivative and unoriginal. All of the songs this week reminded me of a bad hair day in middle school, so it's hard to even rank them, but if I had to, here's what I'd say:

Good:

1 - Carly Smithson - Total Elipse of the Heart. I loved her version of this song! Pretty much as good as the original, but that comment in itself is one reason why I really didn't like this week.

2 - Michael Johns - We Are the Champions Medley. He finally got it right and hit a great note. However, I'd like to hear him sing a song that didn't have to be chopped up to fit the time.

3 - Brooke White - Every Breath You Take. She's got such a pure voice, I always enjoy her performances. She's better than most of the rest of them, but I still think she's got a killer performance in her that we've yet to see.

Okay:

4 - Kristy Lee Cook - God Bless the USA. I thought this was kind of a gutsy choice of song, and she delivered it well. I knew she had a good performance in her!

5 - David Cook - Billie Jean. Derivative for like the fourth week in a row. He's an unorignal copy of other not-so-brilliant rock singers who have done what he does better than he does and before he did it. His performance was high-caliber karaoke. I just don't get the love for him AT ALL.

6 - David Archuleta - You're the Voice. Good but not great by any means nor anywhere close to as good as last week.

7 - Jason Castro - Fragile. He's so cute he could never be boring to me, but he's bordering on it. He needs to pull a "Blake" and do something interesting.

At Risk to Go:

8. Ramiele Maluby - Alone. She can sing, but she's yet to sing in this competition in a way that will win her anything. She has to cut loose.

9. Syesha Mercado - If I Were Your Woman. She was good but forgettable. I had to look up what song she sung.

10. Chikezie - If Only For One Night. Totally forgettable.

Think about it, though. They have to pick and learn a new song, get the band to learn it, too, and record a version for iTunes every week. No time to be truly original. Basically, it's all karaoke.

Actually, I think it really shows how well he knows music. In the past weeks he has been able to find songs from the limited Idol approved list, and know who has covered these songs, and know which ones he could also do. The boy really knows his music!

I searched the Chris Cornell version and I have to say that I like David's better. Chris Cornell has an odd quality to his voice that I am non too crazy about. Fantastic arrangement thought, I like it better than the original Michael Jackson Billie Jean.

Agree. Plus he could have someone who knows his voice and style helping him--listening to all the renditions, texting him which ones to listen to, etc.. He was with a band before coming on AI...maybe someone from the band is helping him?

I imagine someone has listened to all the Dolly Parton songs and made their suggestions to David C. and I would guess that David C already put in his song choice.

In any event, David came prepared. He is strategic. He gets how to manage the way through the AI process.

"Or, the boy goes on YouTube, searches the song title, and listens to different versions of the song, if there are any. I did love it, though."

Or Itunes or whatever that service was that Danny Noriega used that spoiled that he was doing Tainted Love for 80's week.

His account was under his real name and someone found him there, you could see what his last listened to songs were. All different versions of Tainted Love.

The good thing for the idols (and well for anyone that really likes music) these days is it is much easier these days then ever before to quickly find music by any number of artists.

What David Cook does have that works really well is the ability to figure out what version of a song suits him well, and that will work when he performs it.

I think where Danny got into trouble is not only is Tainted Love a bit of an odd song, but IMO the version he sang was more about his own personal taste than what he can perform really well.

I LOVE Chris Cornell. I didn't know who that was until just now, but I love Soundgarden and Audioslave. I'm going to go check out his version, too.

1. David Cook "Billie Jean" – Dude. My husband rewound this to watch it again. I didn’t even have to tell him to. That’s how good it was. Wow. <-- I think that’s the first true wow of the season. I don’t care if it was his second remake copy in a row. It was so good. This icky guy has almost completely won me over.
---gap---
2. Michael Johns "We Will Rock You/We Are the Champions" – I smiled through this whole thing. He’s pretty great and I'm so glad this performance showed that.
---gap---
3. Brooke White "Every Breath You Take" –I love her. I can absolutely see myself purchasing her music.
4. Chikezie "If Only For One Night" – I can’t really say anything other than his voice was great.
---gap---
5. Jason "Fragile" – I liked it. I just didn’t like it as much as the four in front of him.
---gap---
6. Carly "Total Eclipse of the Heart" – There was something so off with this performance. It just wasn’t very good. Still better than the other four.
---big gap---
7. Syesha "If I Were Your Woman" – I thought this was her best performance. Still not a fan.
8. David A. "You're the Voice" – wthell song was that? It was alright. Simon was right on with “theme park performance”.
---giant gap---
9. Ramiele "Alone" – I honestly thought she’d be better than she has been. Kind of a let down for me.
---not a fan gap---
10. Kristy Lee "God Bless the USA" –Safe again. VERY smart song choice.

** HUGS ** to Glow.

We FINALLY agree this season on something!

In the past i've said that - compared to Daughtry - David Cook has shown a lot of originality in switching up songs on his own. Yes, this week (and last) he did a "cover of a cover", similar to what Daughtry did a lot.

So what? Everyone else is doing a cover also. What sets David (and Brooke) apart is that he CAN do his own arrangements brilliantly, AND he can do covers with the conviction that some of these other contestants can only dream of.

This is why David C. and Brooke are at the top of my list.

Plus, where the hell is he?

OK, then I won't make you.
However, there is quite a bit of comparison that goes on there, too.

lol spitting water on my computer screen...now THAT was funny!

Bo will be on the show April 2 (yeah! --he has a new album.

From his myspace: "Make sure to tune in to American Idol on Wednesday, April 2nd, where Bo will be appearing in a segment that catches up with him at home and gives great insight on what he’s been up to since being on Idol."

From Wiki:

"In October of 2007, Bice made an appearance on the TV show American Chopper: The Series in an episode which featured a custom-built Peavey Bike with a built-in guitar, microphone, and amp. Peavey Electronics Corporation and Bice were working together to develop a Bo Bice guitar for their line of products. Bice had made appearances in Peavey Electronics Corporation's after school programs (in conjunction with National Afterschool Alliance) during which Peavey donated instruments to schools.

Bice recently recorded vocals for the upcoming "Church of Southern Rock CD,"<9> a compilation spearheaded by The Marshall Tucker Band's George McCorkle who recently passed away from cancer. The album will feature a band called "Brothers of the Southland" which is comprised of a number of southern rock legends and is set for release in spring of 2008, with advance downloads available through Brothers of the Southland MySpace page. Bice contributed to 2 tracks on the CD, including lead vocals and guitar on a remake of the Marshall Tucker Band's "Can't You See."

Bice's music video--"Witness" (from his album "See the Light")--spent three consecutive weeks at #1 on VH1 "Top 20 Countdown" in December 2007 to close out the year. During that same period of time, "Witness" was ranked #2 on VH1 Video on Demand, and his "See the Light" was ranked #1 Album on the VH1 site.

In February 2008, Bice traveled to Kuwait and Afghanistan to perform for U.S. troops deployed in the region, and to thank them for their service. He will go back to the region in Fall 2008. He is touring during spring and summer of 2008 to promote his album "See the Light." "

His schedule is here: http://www.bobice.com/

Can't wait to hear the remake of "Can't You See"!

Off to listen to some tracks of his album on Bo's myspace.

1. David Cook - I agree with geekboy, at least he brings something different to the stage

2. Brooke - I agree with Paula, you would know that was Brooke on the radio and I would like it.

3. Jason - my least favorite performance of his, yep even less than last week but he's still in my top 3

gap

4. Kristy Lee - I like her voice and she showed brains picking that song, which suited her voice

5. Carly - Least favorite Carly song

6. David A - Good Cod I hope he doesn't win this thing

7. Micheal - BH was so much better

8. Ramiele - nothing special

9. Syesha - out of all the divas there have ever been she's my least favorite

10. Chickezie - the songs you're great at I don't like and all the others leave me wishing my fast forward went even faster

I have ranked only one person...

1. David Cook - Thank Dog they finally gave the pimp spot to a deserving person. I have like David C. from the start and he gave me chills last night. Dude made the rest of the contestants performances fade in comparison. I rewound his performance about 10 times last night. Brilliant. I would run out and buy that song from him right.now.

Observations/not ranked:

- Brooke - squeaky clean Brooke singing a stalker song???? Strange.
- Michael - finally didn't bore me.
- Ramielle - Do not sing Heart. Repeat, do not sing Heart. Especially when a former Idol winner did it and knocked it out of the park. You now have failed to live up to two different artists. *tsk, tsk*
- David A. - Don't get the love. What the h*ll was that song?? Dude, fire your Pops.
- Carly - Love her voice and I probably would have loved this performance more if David C. hadn't stolen the night.
- Kristy - Agree with Simon, very clever song selection. Noone can Boo that song and you didn't suck singing it.
- Syesha - Who?
- Chikezie - *yawn*
- Jason - I still think your cute and it was good to see you back with the guitar

David Cook - Awesome. I much preferred David's version over the raw voiced version of Chris Cornell.
Michael Johns - Awesome 2.
Brooke - Beautiful. I'll be buying her CD's.
David A. - I liked the song, and he sang it well.
Chikezie - It was fun to see Chikezie do the exact same heartthrob audience interaction thing as Julio Iglesias Jr. during his winning performance on "Gone Country." Chikezie was definately cheesy, in a mouthwatering stretchy melted cheese good way.
Jason - also channeling Iglesias Jr. with the Spanish at the end.
Kristy - expect to see her perform on Country week.
Carly - the backup singer upstaged her in the beginning part. Carly rushed the buildup, so that when she neared the climax, her voice had nothing musical left to give. She nearly choked herself with the shouting. The bathroom squat at the end was not pleasant.
Syesha - best performance yet, I’m still not a fan.
Ramiele - I really wanted her to blow me away with this, but she blew it.

13. "RE: Top 10 - Birth Year Songs - Rankings & Thoughts"
1. David Cook, yep, it was someone else's version but it is so iconic of that era you really had to find a different arrangement than the original to work from.

2. Chikezie. Sue me, I like old school. There is a reason some of that style of singing stands the test of time.

3. Brooke. Liked the voice on the slow part and at least there was some sort of change up. Really like her voice, but I'd have loved to see her actually pull off the creapiness of the song rather than singing it like the love song people who haven't listened to the lyrics seem to think it is.

4. Syesha. Typical Diva song, but delivered.

5. Michael. Makes me want to go to the show with a big sign with Stop.The.Song.Chop done in glitter paint on it. At least he seemed to actually want to be here this week.

6. Jason. Dude, dooooood, if you were any more laid back you'd be snoring on stage.

7. Carly. The lower range sounds good. I need a mute for the visuals. The closing your eyes and getting into the song punctuated by the OMG those lights are going to hit me deer eyes followed by the angry face stuff has to stop. While I am glad you have leg strength, save the squats for the gym, so not attractive.

8. Kristy. Now that is a grand total of two songs you can actually sing. This, and Amazing Grace. Congrats, I never thought anyone could pander to their fans more than Marie pretending to be one of her dolls on DWTS, and you managed to do it.

9. David A. Because I feel too sorry for him to rank him any lower.

10. Ramiele. You've just lost your spark somewhere, I wish you'd find it.

14. "RE: Top 10 - Birth Year Songs - Rankings & Thoughts"
I'll go a little against the grain. So for this week:

1. Brooke. Her voice is so pure and her image so clean it was a joy hearing her sing that song. I was hoping she would work in a new lyric like "I'm your number one fan" into the song.

2. David Cook. Excellent performance, a little on the arrogant side. The problem though is that I swore off Billie Jean in 1984, vowing that if I ever heard that song again, I would hurl. Those of us old enough to remember the Thriller album can vouch for it's overplay, and I'm sticking to my guns on this.

3. Syesha. Best performance for her by far.

GAP

4. Kristy Lee. I'm going to bump her up here because of the smart choice. She's playing to her demographic, she pulled it off as well as possible without being too corny, and she looks good do it; just not as good or as well as Brooke.

5. Carly. A few too many pitch problems. To me, Carly is like a Porche with a bad transmission, never quite lives up to the expectations.

6. Michael. Get over yourself, you're not Freddie Mercury. Your voice isn't anywhere near as good and the upper ranges, and you can't do that song on stage without wearing tights. State law.

GAP II

7. Jason. Nice ditty. Boring. Better keep batting your baby blues for votes.

8. Chikezie. Fell flat after the last two weeks, which I really enjoyed. In my opinion, nobody has bigger swings than this guy.

9. Davey A. Simon hit the nail on the head. Fortunately this competition is long enough that people can see that the emperor has no clothes. Unfortunately, it's not going to matter, because everyone is going to vote for him anyway. Kind of like Obama.

10. Ramielle. Nice voice, but I've never liked the song selection. Still waiting for the breakout; unfortunately she's not going to get that chance.

Top tier - gonna download these:

David C. - I don't CARE if someone did it before, that ROCKED!!!

Jason - I love the guy. He's laid back and cool and fun to listen to

David A. - I loved that song, and though he did a marvelous job with it! I don't really like him enough to rank him this high most weeks, and the song was way to deep for him, and he reminds me of one of my kids' punk friends, but for this week he's up here.

Carly - her type of song, and except for the ending, done quite well.

Second tier - good, but not quite good enough:

Brooke - I like her, but just not top-tier worthy this week

Michael - FINALLY he unloads. Can he keep it up? Oh, and I loved the camera work on this, showing the violins' flourish at the end of the big note.

Third tier - meh:

Kristy Lee - that song gets to me every time, and it was genius of her to choose it.

Chikezie - He turned into Ruben Jr. this week.

Syesha - great big voice, but she's just a typical AI contestant, singing the big diva songs

Ramiele - see Syesha, but with the great big voice replace by loud screaming

I liked most of last night...huge improvement from last week and may be the best week for the next few weeks.

David C--got the FULL pimp treatment from pimp spot to the lighting to the judges' AWE of his delivery. Good for you, David C! Glad you made the night. Like his performances but not moved to buy his itunes stuff yet. May be due to song choice. Most strategic performer on the show so far.

Michael--glad to see him get the pimp treatment from the lighting-- to the huge grins on the judges’ faces as the audience applauded-- to their comments for him. Still like Across the Universe better but this one played to the masses as “AI” in the way AI likes to have it. Liked the ending. Not only will I buy a cd, I have already bought his itunes stuff, pre idol and idol. Will be interesting to hear/see him do country next week.

Carly--near goose bump moments at the beginning of the song, thought she sounded terrific…but I get so distracted by the shoulder hunching/moving that she does in the middle in the song and then by the end of the song she has lost me. I still think she belongs on Broadway, perhaps her stage moves came from her touring in plays as a child and she hasn’t moved from that to “rocker” type of stage moves.

Brooke--I really liked it. But I am already forgetting it, unlike David C and Michael’s performances.

Jason--see Brooke’s comments.

Ramiele--one of the best things I have heard you sing. Somewhat shouty. Still doesn’t make me want to buy a cd.

Syesha--best diva performance from you so far--but I prefer Mindy Do… I think you will get some singing gigs after AI now that you have shown some nuance in your singing.

Chikeze--not sure why he went ballad after he got props for his energetic performances the past two weeks --unless he is pragmatic about his chances of winning and wanted to show America what his ballads sounded like? Chikeze, sounded good but listen to what the judges say about song selection...

David A--this showed what I don’t like about you. Take away the popular, well known song and now you are stripped down to your actual talent. I don‘t get the huge David A love unless it is all about how well you do for your age as opposed to how well you do overall. Wondering about Simon’s comment re: who chose the song. Is AI frustrated with David A’s stage dad?

Kristy--while that was an improvement you still couldn’t deliver a flawless performance of a patriotic fav. Simon is right, though, one of the best song choice moves in years. Guess we’ll see you next week for Dolly P week, what nice timing for you (unless your competitors outshine you in your own genre). Gah. If not, we will see her not only next week but also IGB week (the non-boot week) AND the week after that, too. Will it never end?

Really enjoyed and remembered: David, Michael
Remembered and somewhat enjoyed: Carly

Enjoyed but don’t remember much of it: Brooke and Jason

Remember but were outshone by David and Michael: Syesha, Ramiele, Chikeze
Forgettable and did not enjoy: David A, Kristy

For some reason, the 'birth year' always seems to go over a little better than say, 'Beatles, Beach Boys, or Bee Gees' week. I think it gives the almost Idols a chance to jump out and in to their own. I dunno, just a thought. Here are my faves:

David C: As always. From the beginning, you have wow'ed me, and you continue to do so. And you are even LOOKING better every week! KUDOS again for an A. M. A. Z. I. N. G. job!

Carly: My Irish rose-you always hit it out of the park, but you HAVE to watch those facial expressions. Something about your inflections that could be turning people off. Otherwise, not one other girl, or any of of the other guys (other than my numero uno) can hold a candle to you, girl!

Gee, hard to even compare after those two!

Kristy Lee?? Props for choosing a song that could've gone either way. Simon could have trashed you all the way to Cuba for that one, but he loved it. And you did a good job, vocally, even on the chord change. So, finally, a pat on the back. But don't get too comfy.

Micheal: Not so bad. There just isn't a whole lot of charm or charisma that I was expecting from you. What happened?? You're an Aussie-that should be a natural....

Cheezie: loved the ballad, don't know what the others were talking about. I thought you did it well. Just too predictable, week after week. And it's getting weaker, sadly.

Brooke: Yes, you have a natural ability. Even with the mis-hap. THAT, though, should have been considered a huge no-no, and for whatever reason, the judges let you slide a lot. A LOT. You're becoming too one dimensional for me.

Syeshia: Good pipes, ok personality, good song choice. You may actually make it to the top 5, if you keep this up. For once you picked up the pace, and let loose. But, to me, you're still forgettable, and I honestly don't remember what you sang last night. Sorry!

Jason: Nothing in this competition is keeping you here, EXCEPT your looks. That's all I have to say. Dork Boy.

David A: Never heard of that song before, either, but it was 'ok'. Not wow'ed, but I really am not usually wow'ed by you, anyway. I mean, come on, you are a nice guy! And you WILL get picked up by someone, I'm sure. But I just don't see you being the next AI. But stranger things have happened!

Ramie: Girl, you know your head is one the chopping block, and yet you keep picking these bigger than life songs. I see where you're coming from, but it's hurting more than helping. But, whatever, huh? At least you'll go down in a blaze of glory, so good for you! If Danny can keep his fingers dialing, and his buddies on those phones, you may just last longer than anyone expected.

1. David Cook-I hadn't heard the Chris Cornell version but I found it today. His is better than David C and he thought of it first...so David C is not all that original but he did it very well and it was his best performance and def the best perf of the nite

2. Jason-I just love this kid and I loved this song HAPPY BIRTHDAY...wonder if he went to a club after the show...it was his 21st bday...i'm sure he did he started before he sang the song...when Simon started yakking about not wanting it I wish Jason had just said Chill out dood in his best stoned voice

3. Chikezie-well yes he's not as good as Luther or Rueben even but I love those 2 and he did a good job and I like him so much more than the others on the show

4. Michael-Ok that was his best performance besides Bohemian in Hollywood..but really the songs are so trite...I really hope he gets VFTW nod after KKKristy is booted next week

5. Syesha-I liked this by her. It was her best perf. but again she does scream. She was safe last week but this week she prob will get another scare

6. Brooke-oops on the first note. But no one talked about how this was a horrible song choice for Brooke. This is the ultimate stalking song. Sting even said he wrote Set them Free as the antidote to this song. Brooke the rainbow happy child should not have picked this and she didn't understand it any better than Archie did Imagine.

7. David Archie Archulata-another sappy song. Simon was right about this one. so many songs to choose from and you pick this one...yoiks...and the girl sitting next to his dad...his sister...

8. Ramiele-meh

9. KKKristy-wonder what she thinks about Obama not putting his hand over his heart during the National Anthem...pathetic and it was not good

10. Carly-hate the song hate the faces esp at the end and I hate Carly

As did I.

The thing is I think if she got the stalkiness of it she could have used it to really counterpoint against her shiny happy people natural persona.

If it had gone just a bit angry and dark rather than all happy when the band came it it could have been really cool. Give it that "it isn't the ones you expect that end up being the bad guy" story to it.

It could still be all Lilith Fair, just more of a Sarah Mclaughlin type of vibe all "Building a Mystery" like rather than Sixpence None the Richer "Kiss Me".

There seems to be a theme this year - start slowly and end with a bang, and last night definitely followed that course. I really enjoyed it.

Loved them!

1. David Cook - Billie Jean - This guy is the reason I am watching and enjoying this years competition. Knocked it out of the park last night! (BTW - did ayone think his baby picture looked exactly liked John McCain?).

2. Carly Smithson - Total Elipse of the Heart - I totally disagree with the judges on this one. I am one of the four people on earth who actually like this song and I thought she nailed it. I can't understand all the animosity towards this girl - I think she has the best female voice in the competition.

3. Michael John - We Will Rock You/We Are The Champions - I was cringing when I heard he was going to do this, and I have been largely disappointed with him for a while, but I must say - he did a great job of this. Totally redeemed some pretty crap performances last night.

Liked Them

4. Chikezie - If Only For One Night - Don't get the critisism of his performance - I thought he did a beautiful job that really highlighted his vocal range. My sense is that the tweenies will vote him out though. Too bad.

5. Jason Castro - Fragile - A little on the sleepy side, but a nice performance.

6. Ramielle - Alone - Tough song that requires a big range. This little girl has that range. Nicely done.

7. Syesha Mercado - If I Were Your Woman - Not really into her style but must gives props where props are due.

Meh.

8. Brooke White - Every Breath You Take - I think she was trying to capture the magic of "Let It Be", and I think she fell short. I am so over her and as a result, she will make the final two.

9. - David Archuleta - You're the Voice - another one trick pony who can't stretch his range. Another one that I am so over and thus will make the final two.

10. Kristy Lee Cook -God Bless the USA - I will go as far as to admit that it was a smart song choice. Best part for me was when the camera panned her a$$. Nuff said, else I risk a banning.

Didn't notice. Too busy covering my ears. Can't stand KKKristy. Thought she butchered that song. Syesha's slightly more my type, but a little on the skinny side and I can't stand her hair.

Do not find KKKristy at all attractive. Or talented.

25. "RE: Top 10 - Birth Year Songs - Rankings & Thoughts"
I'm kinda nervous.
This is my first week on the boards this season, and I haven't caught up on what the general opinions are...so I MIGHT be really off the beaten path, and in danger of a "WTH are you thinking?!?" Here goes:

1. David Cook, "Billy Jean” – Wow. Just wow. I hadn’t really (and still kinda don’t) thought of myself as a David Cook “Fan,” but each week I find myself buying his recordings. He’s the only one that I have ALL performances of. And I’ll be buying this week’s too. I don’t care if he’s not the first one that came up with this arrangement – at least he’s giving credit, and I just don’t think they have enough time with the band to develop a totally new one. Maybe when there are fewer singers. And aside from being ridiculously musical, David is a really good singer too! Bonus!

2. Jason Castro, Sting, "Fragile” – It was lovely. Soft, sweet, a little Latin spice. I do agree with those who want to see Jason challenge himself with more than ‘moving about the stage.’ I like him, but he’s clearly the singer/songwriter type, and I don’t know if a singer/songwriter can win a competition based on covers. (And I don’t know how his songwriting skills are.) However, I regularly buy the albums of artists very much like Jason. Since Jason is so new to singing, I think waiting a year or two to get some vocal training would have helped.

3. Chikezie, Luther Van dross, "If Only for One Night” – I’m not a huge R&B fan, but I definitely prefer ‘old-school’ to ‘new-school’ – so I really liked what Chikezie did. He really sings beautifully and has much more range and control than any other singer in the comp. Yes, including Carly.

4. Brooke White, The Police, "Every Breath You Take” – Nice job. FWIW, the re-start didn’t bother me at all. Things happen when you perform live. She recovered, ‘nuf said. As with Jason, she’s definitely the type of artist that I buy stuff from, but it remains to be seen how far a singer/songwriter can go on AI. Also, as with Jason, I have no idea how good her own songs are. She’s very musical though.

5. Carly Smithson, Bonnie Tyler, "Total Eclipse of the Heart” – Eh. Clearly, she is a skilled singer with a good voice. She does tend to screech occasionally, but what really kills it for me is the lack of sweat, grit, blood, something. Like an RNO writer commented on Syesha (see lower), Carly feels sterile to me.

6. Ramiele Malubay, Heart, "Alone" – Nice voice, and I’m glad she sang a ‘big’ song to remind us that she’s got a big voice…however, I don’t feel like she really has a musical identity yet. I think she’s a fairly young 20 y.o. She would have benefited from waiting a couple of years before doing this.

7. Syesha Mercado, Gladys Knight and the Pips, "If I Were Your Woman” – This year’s bargain basement ‘diva.’ And each year, I have the same question…do we really need another singer like this? On RNO, one of the writers described her as sterile – I think that’s a good way to put it (I feel the same way about Carly).

8. Michael Johns, Queen, "We Will Rock You" and "We Are the Champions” – He tried to recapture his Hollywood magic, and failed. (Though I didn’t find him all that magical in Hollywood either.) Yeah, his performance was better this week, but he still invites negative comparison by singing Queen. And the singing is only OK. Plus, as I typed last night, he REALLY needs to stop choosing songs that need to be edited into submission.

9. Kristy Lee Cook, "God Bless the USA” – Is she this year’s Haley or this year’s Sanjaya? I guess it depends on which week. This week she’s Haley – pretty girl, OK voice, boring, no charisma, whips out some blatant pimp device (Haley: legs / KLC: patriotism). I really want her to go home, but wouldn’t mind if she stayed longer than…

10. David Archuleta, John Farnham, "You're the Voice" – I can’t bear this. He’s only an OK singer, he has HORRIBLE taste in songs, his delivery is very much pageant or talent show. Star Search indeed. However, I’m starting to feel really sorry for this trained poodle. If half of the stage-dad stories are true…coupled with the way he looks when he’s “under judgment”…this kid is a mess. He looks like he’s falling apart – and he’s the chosen one! Can you imagine if he had to cope with all the stuff that John Steven’s had thrown at him? He’ll be in therapy for years.

DW and I had the same reaction. She's a "typical" AI diva.

10. David Archuleta, John Farnham, "You're the Voice" – I can’t bear this. He’s only an OK singer, he has HORRIBLE taste in songs, his delivery is very much pageant or talent show. DAVID COOK - BRILLIANT!!! I look forward to his performance every week. Consistently one of my top three.

BROOKE - I love the timbre of her voice... she is distinct and pretty consistent... just teetering a little bit on boring

CARLY - still waiting on a great performance. I think she may be in trouble this week

JUST OKAY BY ME

MICHAEL - I have heard better versions at Karaoke... but the best he has sung so far

CHIKEZE - Boring as a Luther throwback

SYESHA - sorry but I just dont like her and she is a dime-a-dozen singer/performer

DID NOT LIKE

RAMIELLE - I hate to put my girl waaay down here. She has a great voice in there somewhere but it may be too late to show us. I wanted her to do a strong ballad... but leave the rock ballads to Carly... she needs something more Whitneyesque.

DAVID A - during his performance my daughter and I were saying how it reminded us of the songs in the Lion King performance at Disney World Animal Kingdom (I guess Simon saw the same show)

JASON - Very boring... I couldnt even hear him until he starting singing in Spanish and then I couldn't understand him

KRISTI - Cheap shot -- solidifying the Crunchy Fried vote by singin their theme song. I have heard many better versions than that... and btw is anyone else irked by her nails?

37. "RE: Top 10 - Birth Year Songs - Rankings & Thoughts"
So I was pretty underwhelmed last night. A few performances that were really good and the rest I had to spend an hour on Youtube rewatching just to figure out where to rank them. So anyways, here goes...

1. David C.--watched this one several times on Youtube just because it was so freaking good!

2. Carly--I really like this girl. Not my favorite performance of hers but still loads better than the rest.

3. Michael--I was actually very impressed by him last night. He has had a few stick out performances and this was definately one of them. Loved it!

---HUGE GAP---

4. Brooke--I like the beginning best so it kinda ended on a bad note for me. If I hadn't gone back and watched everyone again she might not have ranked this high. Pretty good for a stalker song from Suzy Sunshine.

5. Syesha--Her voice was actually really good last night, but still a blah performance. Side note, she is really annoying in her intereviews, and the baby cry has got to stop asap!

6. Chikezie--Not great but not bad, kinda boing for me.

7. David A.--The kid has a good voice but what the bell was that song...ick!

8. Jason--but he's cute, that is really all he has going for him right now. There was one moment when I thought he was going to really pick it up but then the moment passed and it was boring.

9. Kristy--what can I say about Kristy...why did she have to pick a patriotic song that pretty much guarantees that she will stay another week, and to add insult to injury, she didn't really blow it, it was actually ok. GRRRRRR!

10. Ramiele--I would have loved to put Kristy here because I really don't like her but poor Ramiele really did bad. I know she has a great voice in there but last night did nothing to show it. It pains me to put her here because I've really liked her from the start but here is where she belongs this week.

All that said, I would love to see Kristy go and Ramiele really put out a great performance next week that actually shows her talent. But, alas, neither is likely to happen.

1. David Cook - Both me and DH are big fans. Very enjoyable
2. Brooke White - The whole play be ear thing was impressive to me since I can't play any musical instrument. And I took piano lessons as a child. I also love her voice.
3. Chikezie - He always entertains me. Me kids like him.
4. Carly - She is probably my second fav contestant to David C
5. Michael - He's no Freddy Mercury but it wasn't bad. I liked the We are the Champions part better than the first part.
6. Syesha - I think the diva songs fit her. It wasn't the best but I liked it.
7. Kristi - Her best by a mile. I agree that it was a very strategic song choice, but she sang it well.
8. Jason - He is too cute, but the performance was kinda boring to me.
9. Ramiele - I was an early fan. Oh well... I think she's going home.
10. David A. - Totally not a fan. Blech!

56. "RE: Top 10 - Birth Year Songs - Rankings & Thoughts"
LAST EDITED ON 03-27-08 AT 03:45 AM (EST)

Again, I am a day late and a dollar short. Have to comment though. Mediocre week, with some great songs sung moderately well.

1. David C- Great job. Wasn't original, but his performance was amazing anyway. I also like his version better than Chris Cornell's, but better than MJ?? HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!
2. Michael Johns- I'm a big fan. The We Will Rock You part was sketchy with too much screaming, but the We Are the Champions part rocked and made up for it. Now, good luck with Dolly Parton!
3. Chikezie- What is wrong with old school? Is the 15-23 year old bracket all that matters for AI? This is a boring song, but EZ sang it so dang well that I enjoyed every minute of it. Yeah, I know he's gone already. Undeserved.
4. Kristy- Great song that gets me every time. I am a Yankee urbanite all the way; so all this stereotypical BS about rallying the country fans is just that. Once again, Kristy's vocals were among the best. No one seems to have noticed that she was off tempo in several spots, which is why she isn't higher.
5. Syesha- She took a decent song and made it boring. However, she sang with enough passion and strength to make it work for me.
6. Brooke- An upbeat version of "Every Breath You Take"? I'm sorry, but that makes no sense. It didn't work for me. I still have her this high because her and David Cook are still the most polished performers of the group. And she looked better than ever with the straight hair. I've said this before, but her husband has to be LUVIN what these pro stylists and make-up artists are doing for her. She went from Carly Simon-ish to bonafide hottie.
7. Carly- One of the all time great songs in my book. She sang the chorus well and hit the high notes very well. The problem, which no one seems to have noticed is that she messed up the lyrics in several places. The line is "Every now and then I get a little bit terrified and then I see the look in your eyes" not "every now and then I get a little bit frightened and then I see the look in your eyes." And the line is "We are living in a powder keg and giving off sparks." Not "You're like a powder keg giving off sparks." Whether the lyric gaffes were intentional or just gaffes, it is all unacceptable to me.
8. Ramielle- I hate to do this to my girl, who was such a cute baby, and looked cuter than ever Tuesday night, but she should not have sang a Heart song. She should not have sang a song already sung by Carly. And she was flat out screaming at the end.
9. Jason - Incredibly boring, misguided, preachy song that didn't match his voice at all. His guitar playing was good though.
10. David A- I don't put him here because I don't like him (he was tops on my list last week). I put him here because that is a God-awful boring song, and I am completely done with this 17 year old machinism preaching about worldly things he knows nothing about. Get off my TV and get a real job!
