I want to lay out here something that has been bugging me all season, and has bugged me previously, but its more out in the open this season....Cases in point - David Cook, and Amanda. Scene 1: Hollywood week, Amanda Overmyer She comes out and says she is singing The Doors, camera to Simon, "How surprising" sarcastically. Comments from the judges, you did great but "you need to switch it up some, and not do Janis and the Doors all the time otherwise people will get bored." Switch to the top 24/etc weeks.... Amanda fails miserably with Kansas and the week prior w/ some bluesy song. Cue judges: "Amanda, you have to be true to yourself. You're a souther-rocker girl, you have a Janis vibe. You know who you are, so don't try to be anyone else." the following two weeks, she takes the Beatles songs, puts her southern rock vibe to it, does great (IMHO) and gets mixed reviews from teh judges. Cue Simon - "Amanda, you've been doing the same thing for a few weeks now, and i think it will start to bore people. you need to switch it up a bit." Scene Two: David Cook Top 16 Week - "Hello" - RAVE reviews. Top 12 Week - "Eleanor Rigby" - RAVE reviews. Cue judges "David, you KNOW who you are, you bring it week after week, brilliant my man. You're a star" blah blah blah Top 11 Week - "Daytripper" - overall good reviews, but now the same as Amanda - "You need to switch it up a bit" crap. So, when they step out of their box, they need to true to who they are...but when they are true to who they are, they need to switch it up and step out of their box. Which is it? Am I simply confused? For me, I love Amanda and David Cook for the simple fact that THEY KNOW WHO THEY ARE. Shut up, judges. geekboy

I happen to agree with the judges, that Amanda and David C.need to "change it up" sometimes. We all hope that the performer will try something different and do it really well. Amanda tried something different, and it stunk. Not the judges fault.

OK, let me explain my confusion a little more.First, i have no problem with the contestants switching it up. Go for it. What i have a problem with is the inconsistancy from the judges. One week they tell them to switch it up. the next they say they have to be true to themselves and not be afraid of it. Then, when they are themselves, they flip back and tell them to switch it up. which is it? that's my problem. geekboy "I love puppies!" - S. Cowell

LAST EDITED ON 03-19-08 AT 12:20 PM (EST)I think the problem is you need a bit of both. If you do the exact same "true to yourself" performance every single show it gets boring and "One Trick Pony". To break the "this performance is exactly the same one you did the last 6 weeks" thing you need to change it up. The problem is changing to something completely different just for the sake of change doesn't work if there is no authenticity to the changing it up. Usually, for me, I think people who make it to the end have a balance between versatility and authenticity. They may do different things in some weeks, but it isn't a change that is totally random and put on just to do a change up. The problem is you critique what is in front of you. Same thing every single weeks gets a you need to change it up. Totally random, stupidly done change gets a "and you need to be true to who you are, not just something totally random." Making a smart change that showcases something about your talent that isn't obvious when you do your usual shtick is the hard part. There is a way to "be authentic" and "change it up" but they judge based on what the biggest problem is at the moment. ETA: Telling someone that is always the same to be true to themselves isn't something they need to hear. Telling someone that just does stupid random changes that they need to change it up also isn't something they need to hear. However any given person may need to hear both those things over the course of several weeks of performances, or different people may need one or other other during the same week.

I agree it appears inconsistent but the fact is, you have to have a distincive sound and be versatile, to make it in this business. Carrie Underwood was obviously a country singer, but she didn't disappoint when she did other genres. Daughtry is a great example of someone who could do other genres well, while maintaining his own distinctive sound.

The judges have used this card in other seasons, too. It just seems like we are hearing this earlier this season. Randy said in an interview a couple of weeks ago that the winner of AI needs to be able to sing **anything**. And the previous winners had been able to do that. ALL of them. Anyone can be good singing one way, but they want the winner to be able to sing **anything**. It was one of the best interviews I ever heard from Randy about the show. He made it sound like AI process is to weed out the ones who can't sing something other then their original style. So, they are testing the performers. Seeing if their chops are genre specific or if they are versatile. I agree that Amanda and David C can get boring week after week if we have the screamy stuff for a few more weeks. However, I like them better than people who are still trying to find a genre, like Syesha, Ramiele, and Kristy. Perhaps it is as simple as who could sing the Star Spangled Banner at the Super Bowl and not embarrass the show? Amanda...I don't think I would like her version. David C...I could imagine him singing a straight version of it very well...and not resort to a poser rocker version.

They are giving the same mixed message to Ramiele too. For the last three+ weeks she sang a slow balladish song and they told her she is getting boring and to pick something snappier, and this week she picked something more up-tempo and Paula tells her she should sing a ballad. Umm...hello!
