So special that 23 seconds of content will be stuffed into a full two hours of programming. Why you may ask? Because: {Chorus 2X} You know it's hard out here for a pimp (you ain't knowin) When he tryin to get this money for the rent (you ain't knowin) For the Cadillacs and gas money spent (you ain't knowin) <1> Because a whole lot of bitches talkin ##### (you ain't knowin) <2> Will have a whole lot of bitches talkin ##### (you ain't knowin) So much pimpin to do, so little time. Not only will it be 2 hours, but 2 venues will be needed to hold all the pimpin. So many celebrities in need of being pimped. These poor folks need a bump in record sales/movie sales/anything else they are selling sales. If you don't provide for these poor people by downloading their stuff from iTunes or buying their CD's and DVD's at the store tomorrow they won't be able to make enough money to support their tragically meager lifestyles. If you do not buy the products that are pimped these companies will not be able to provide 0.0003% of their profit to the children. How else will needy children all over Africa and America obtain cell phones with unlimited text messaging and minutes so they can stay up way past their bedtime on a school night voting their little fingers off. Think of the poor actors of all those Fox shows and how they will suffer if they do not win their time slot in the upcoming sweeps. Then there is the pimping of the judges and Ryan. Oh and a couple of contestants we haven't kicked off, yet. We should probably mention them once or twice as well.

I remember hearing them on the bus, so that'd be the original Earth, Wind and Fire album that came out in '70. I followed them a bit up 'til 75, during which time they had at least a couple more releases, recently not at all. I really liked the sound of the original group - great rhythm and plenty of instrumentals.

Having a hard time reconciling this show and the :60 Minutes interview with Simon earlier this year with his bragging how wealthy he is and how much he makes off of each idol contestant all over the world. Now, if he tagged that with "and I give xxxx to this charity" then maybe this would not seem so...contrived at times.
Sigh. I am glad they are doing something for charity. I just have a hard time believing this is the first time Simon finds out the conditions in African orphanages, lack of medicines, state of the Katrina area, etc..

It was just a telethon and not all that great. In Simon's own words (with this telethon being his own production) it was "still an ok performance". I found it kind of fun to watch in parts, but it really wasn't very cohesive. Whether AI should be in the telethon business is another matter, but I think I see where you're coming from.
The only real question in my mind is whether Jordin was the actual bottom vote-getter (which she may not be since Ryan indicated there was no particular order). If not, putting her in the position where she could only assume she was eliminated was unfair to her. She looked really upset - and perhaps justifiably.
It might have been a good idea (if they didn't) for them to inform the contestants that none of them would go home, but the voting results would still be announced during the show. Then the top 6 can relax, enjoy themselves and have more fun singing during the telethon.

The way she is presented on the show makes it clear to me that the producers want her to win. Therefore if you can tweak her fan base to make sure she stays to the end I think they would do it.

I hate to say it, because it was a "charity/telethon" show, but overall this was pretty lame. Now that it is done, this should NOT have been during the regular season. This would have been much more effective if it was shown between seasons.
It was too cut up, the stars and performers were not top notch. The Ben Stiller bit was lame. The "Stayin Alive" bit was lame. Jack Black was lame. Interspersed with depressing montages, then back and forth with the results.
For me, it just didn't work. Then top it off with putting these 6 through two hours to say "Ha! Gotcha! Nobody is eliminated and we're sending two of you home next week!"
I didn't like it at all. I'd be pissed if I was one of them.

Except that you would have lost half or more of the audience. Considering how pointless most results shows are, this was much better IMO. No worse than a Jerry Lewis telethon bouncing back and forth between entertainment and heartfelt pleas.
What the show accomplished last night was much more important than the business of selecting a new idol. They used their power for good. I don't really care if the contestants were temporarily discomforted - during the two hours of the show 240 children died from malaria.

Well just color me a Cynic. I truly feel deep down that this whole Idol Gives Back was just invented to help with ratings this year. They have advertisers to impress and they weren't doing it so thus this telethon was born. Agree with everyone that said it should have been done on an offnight (Thursday/Monday/Friday) or should have been done during the offseason. That they did do it during a scheduled showtime further convinces me that this was all about Idol first and foremost. Am I happy these kids and countries benefited from this? Of course I am. I shed a tear or two last night but I just don't believe in the all mighty goodness that AI was trying to portray.

I still think that if they had chosen an off-night or done it after the season they would have only had half of the audience they had last night. The false tension of the results show kept a large portion of the fan base tuned in when they might not have been otherwise. And the votes will still be counted and they will still eliminate someone based (mostly) on this weeks vote.
What about the millions that were raised based on advertisers matching the votes with dollars? That would not have happened in an off night.
I understand the cynicism and I certainly don't think that they acted from 100% altruistic motives. But I do believe that they were moved to act by what they saw and they helped the shows ratings AND helped millions around the world with last nights show. The downside of last nights show completely alludes me.

I agree the clips of people was very moving, disturbing and poignant. The children and their mothers all living in despair should move people to do something and get thier governments to open their eyes and help instead of concentrating on other activities that they are involved in.

I completely agree that using the results show was a positive thing. if they wanted to connect the voting to the cause, with the votes linked to corporate donations, it made sense to use the Tues/Wed cycle in this way. A tidy little mid-season package.

I was incredibly cynical of the producers' motives, especially when I read Simon C's comments about how the most important thing last night was putting on a really entertaining show.
To me it looked like a blatant attempt to promote the show, get even more press and make themselves LOOK like they care.
But in the end, all the good they actually accomplished made me jettison all of that irritation and cynicism.
Children ARE dying. It was a wonderful and I think effective way to make middle America actually comprehend how fortunate they/we are and dig into their/our pockets for just one night to try to do something about it.
That phone number was super busy here in the Seattle market, I started trying to get through fairly early on, not nonstop, and finally got it to ring around 10:30. Exactly when Kelly came on stage, golly, so I was glad I had the VCR running.
So the bottom line is they did a very fine thing. Motives be damned.

I hope people didn't take my comments wrong. I applaud Idol for doing this charity event. The stories were emotional, touching, and thought provoking. Again, a applaud Idol immensely for doing this.
But, i still think it was wrong to do this mid-season. The country still LOVES Idol, and waits all summer, all through Christmas for it to return.
I think they could have received the same donations, and possibly more, if they would have planned this out more, convinced a slew of past Idol contestants to come on the show, to sing, to give updates, etc. I envision that an 'Idol Homecoming' at some point during the summer would have been HUGE.
But, what do i know.

I don't want to be preached to for two hours about giving to Africa and Kentucky only to have no one be eliminated, which is what I tuned in for. Especially not from people who make millions of dollars off of entertainment (and that's everyone on the show) and live in houses you could see on Cribs. So yes, I care if they are hypocrites, since the show is asking viewers to give up their money when they are the ones rolling in dough because of television and music.
And FWIW, I'm not necessarily buying that all that 50 million will find its way into the right hands, or even their hands at all. In spite of much larger past charity efforts, what change has happened in Africa? Kids are still dying of starvation and malaria, AIDS is still rampant, we have a genocide in Darfur and likely other nations as well that we either aren't aware of or don't care about.
And I don't want to make an extremist and insensitive comparison, but I like to consider where my money is going to both in the end and through the conduits.

Just to say, welcome to the forums here bzooti.
I'll jump on this bandwagon. I really liked the idea they held a show which would benefit people who really need it. How much is hard to say, but something is better than nothing. I can appreciate what Simon is trying to accomplish.
That said, I didn't like the way they did the results thing. It's fine by me if they announce the votes yet not eliminate anybody for this special edition. I'd still watch it for the vote results, even if I knew nobody was getting eliminated. But I didn't quite like the way they did it, leaving it unclear (to me anyway) whether Jordin was actually the lowest vote-getter. And maybe too they should have let the contestants know in advance.
As for the show, it was fun, but not great.

I find it interesting to watch how the producers try to influence the voters with the pimpage.
It isn't wrong that they do it, I expect them to do it. Just like I expect the editing on any reality TV show to show me only the story the producers want me to see.
I just find how heavy handed it is alternatively cruel, amusing, ironic or annoying. Depends on my mood, and how they happened to jerk people around.
Everyone is going to have their favorites, that is going to color the judging. After all, despite all evidence anyone might provide I do believe the producers and the judges are human with all the flaws and foibles that come with that. No one is ever completely objective. What we believe and who we like will color our observations.
I just think jerking Jordin around when she had based on everything I can find a very high vote total just to make sure her fans are rabid for the next couple of weeks a bit sickening. Chris was also made to look in the bottom two and he gets more than his fair share of pimpage. I do not think that was by random draw. Just like Melinda look like she was the top vote getter when she appears from the data we have to be middle of the pack. They want her peeps to think she is safe and vote Jordin as I think they want Jordin, not Melinda in the finals.
I'm also annoyed sometimes by some people getting told that was the bestest performance evah, when there are many that were much better.
I only remember years later a few performances from each season. Jordin's this week will not be one of them. No matter how hard Randy tried to tell me it was the best of the best ever on the show.
Now sometimes the pimpage doesn't work, but I wonder if the pimpage is extra blatent this year because Taylor won last year.

Part of the cynicism is who else was in the "bottom two" aka two left for the end.
If it had been Phil, or one of the other less pimped I'd be less cynical. That it was Chris that seems to get way more pimping than his talent merits. Most people get a bump the following week it seems when they are in the bottom two or three.

I firmly believe that Chris was the lowest vote getter and since they want him in the finale with Jordin they pushed the results for another week. Yep, I think they want Chris over Blake.
If I looke at them I think on paper Chris seems more marketable to the teen pop crowd. Whether that is true or not I don't know, but the male idols haven't been pop, and I think they want a pop star this time. Not R&B, not adult contemporary, not beatboxing, but full out Pop.
The two best candidates for Pop are IMO Chris and Jordin.

I added the top 6 to the pimp spot thread. We are missing a couple, we need to update that and get the full results. I can type up later. This is what I wrote down, it may need to be checked.

Now some of that is based on merit, the last spot is often one of the best or most upbeat performances of the night, so even if not manipulated it is likely to be non-random. I just remember Chris R's pimpspot did not seem merit to me. It wasn't that great, nor was it really upbeat.

Looking at last year's list that I compiled for the pimp spot thread, seeing Chris D. get the top ten re-pimp before Taylor got even one pimp spot was so blatant....Chris had been in the bottom 2 or 3 the week before and that was an attempt to galvanize his fan base(...which worked for one week...then he was booted) was the complete reveal of the AI agenda. Taylor was at the top of the vote list on Dial Idol for the entire season (except may be one week when he was 2nd, would have to look to be sure)...while Chris was never at the top of the list. Dial Idol was more reliable last year, too. Rumors and verified last minute song clearance issues for Taylor failed to keep him down.
We know from myidol message board numbers that Blake has had the most interest; from an E or People article that there was so much cheering for Blake in a previous week (compared to others) the judges had to wait to give comments...and you could hear it even this week...I feel like they are trying to sorta anti-pimp Blake...kinda like a soft anti-pimping...while Phil is getting the odd man out treatment, as your pimp spot list shows.
Last night told me they want Phil out before Chris ...and I agree that they want people to think Jordin is at risk, because let's face it, except for this week's pimp spot and judges' tounge baths, she is only a middle of the pack player who could be at risk.

Did you know that according to industry articles, 95% of all artists/acts do not sell more than 500,000 albums--the number it takes to sell gold?

First the pimpage is so blatant and unfair to some of the contestants. Look at how Jordin is pimped versus Phil for example.
Yes, the fan bases can triumph over pimping--last year showed us that. That's why they are working extra hard to pimp Jordin this year.
Randy told us before the Hollywood rounds that the winner would have curly hair. So, Phil, Blake, Chris R, Melinda, Lakisha had all better get a curly haired wig if they want to win if AI has their way.
Next, they are leading the thinking of the audience. I had a friend call me to tell me how the show went since I was not home for the Tuesday show. She completely parroted the judges' comments about Jordin, Lakisha and Blake. I have had time to listen to Jordin and Blake and when you just listen, Blake sounded terrific and Jordin missed notes... but Randy disses Blake and tells Jordin she was the best performance EVER? Gah. I think the judges tell people what to think and many people "hear" it as the judges tell it. That's why reading the Master Class Lady is so interesting. She tells it from a pro's perspective and you can see where the judges' bs is.
Anyway...watching pimpage and tracking it is one of the reasons I watch the show. It is the sideline entertainment.

Finally getting to watch the Tuesday night show and noticed that they used the Keane song "Somewhere only we know" in both the Tuesday and Wednesday night shows along with the charity clips...and earlier this season when Blake sang it, the judges told him it was an odd choice. LOL.
