"Info on Survivor4 locale on Nuku Hiva"
LAST EDITED ON 10-15-01 AT 04:06 AM (EST)

These two articles from the Tahitipresse give some pretty concrete information on the shooting locale and terrain, apparently on Nuku Hiva itself. Note there's even a map with an arrow...
I'll post a follow-up article on current tensions with the production staff as a reply to this post.

Date:10/4/2001
"Survivor" TV show in the Marquesas Islands

Tahitipresse : The "Survivor" TV show will soon be filmed in Nuku Hiva, Marquesas islands, in the north east of French Polynesia.

A crew from the TV show is already in Tahiti to check the last details. About 250 US technicians are expected in the weeks to come in French Polynesia.
The "Survivor" TV shows had in the past 80 million viewers. Previous shows were in Indonesia, Australia and Kenya.
Sixteen people are to participate in the "Survivor" broadcast. After 39 days, one "survivor" will get the 1 million US$ prize.
In Taihoae, Nuku Hiva, the population is delighted to see the project come true. Four valleys of the island should be used for the TV show. Nuku Hiva is the island where writer Herman Melville stayed for a few months in the XIXth century. He encountered a cannibal tribe and escaped. He later recalled the story in a novel entitled "Typee". Typee comes from Taipivai, one of the most famous bay in Nuku Hiva.

Sixteen US candidates will stay during forty days in a Marquesan valley for this TV show.
"We work thirteen hours per day to take care of all the details", said one of the technicians adding that he could not unravel anything else about the "Survivor" project in French Polynesia.
For several days, the "Survivor" team has been hiring polynesian people to assist the TV crew. 250 persons, including a team of Australian cameramen, will participate in the "Survivor" project. The heavy material needed by the crew will be carried from Tahiti to the Marquesas, 1 500 Kms away (940 miles), by the "Aranui" schooner.
Tahitipresse has learned that four valleys in Nuku Hiva, the main island of the Marquesan archipelago, have been choosen for the TV show : Hakaui, Hakatea, Haeotupa and Aakapa. All of them are located on the western part of the island. They are also, and it is not a surprise, Nuku Hiva's wildest valleys.
Hakaui is famous for its unbelievable landscape and for its 350 m (about 1 000 feet) high waterfall.

Rough valleys

The second valley, Hakatea, is known to be a hunting place with lots of wild pigs. A US family is established in this valley. They often welcome people sailing across the Pacific ocean.
The third valley, Haeotupa, is a true labyrinth. Marquesans say one can easily get lost in this lush vegetation.
The fourth and last valley is called Aakapa. It is probably the roughest of the four valleys. Mosquitoes and "nonos" (sorts of small biting flies) are tough on visitors. "It is impossible to live there because insects keep on attacking you", said a Marquesan hunter living in Tahiti.
These four valleys all have at least one river.
In Taiohae, the main city in Nuku Hiva, many houses will be built in only three weeks to accomodate the "Survivor" technicians. And since the entire project has to remain secret, a code name, "Manuia", is now used. "Manuia" means, in tahitian, success and good luck.
----------------------------------------
Edited to add this pic of Marquesan topography from another source and a little more info on the terrain. Note that the islands aren't reef-protected like Tahiti and Bora-Bora.

The first homeland for the settling of the "Polynesian Triangle", dating back to the start of the modern era, this "Land of Men" "Henua Enata" clustered near the equator includes around ten islands with jagged mountain peaks, about 1,500 kilometers from Tahiti. As there are no barrier reefs the Marquesan coastlines are either indented with bays or end in abrupt cliffs and are swept by the surf and consist of stunning natural scenery. Nature runs wild in these islands where herds of goats and packs of wild horses roam in total freedom.

Coming soon, two new herds... wild or domestic?

1. "Trouble in Paradise"
Let's hope they don't switch the location...
They had trouble in Kenya too. Perhaps the rumour they will pull out has been planted to give them some leverage against their hosts' demands.

Tensions on Survivor: "I’m confident", declares Pascale Haiti, Minister of the Craft Industry.

tahitipresse : The tension went up a notch in Nuku Hiva (Marquesas Islands) where the production team of the American programme "Survivor" is to shoot its fourth episode in December 2001.

The reason for such tension lies in technical and financial disputes between the population and the managers of "Survivor".
The rumour says that the American production is even believed to plan leaving the Marquesas Islands for another archipelago of the South Pacific, such as the Fiji Islands. And yet, on the spot, all is made as if nothing had changed in the projects: 70 houses should be built on the island of Nuku Hiva; everyone gets ready to welcome the Americans despite everything.
On the one hand, Pascale Haiti, the Minister of the Craft Industry, who is a Marquesan woman, on her return from Nuku Hiva where she met the population, tried to reassure people and declared on Friday October 12 to "Tahitipresse" agency: "I’m confident!". Along with Nuku Hiva’s Mayor, Lucien Kimitete, Pascale Haiti tries to moderate these tensions for the good continuation of the shooting. As a Marquesan woman, she knows that it is in the habits of the population to test first-time visitors.
On the other hand, the American production team is very demanding, hence the fever which goes up in Taiohae, the Marquesan capital.

2. "The Arunui freighter"
The vessel that's identified as transporting the equipment for the ship also offers passengers the chance to cruise the Marquesas on this working freighter.
Here's it's home page:

http://www.aranui.com

And it's schedule for this fall:
Voyage 13 Departure Thursday October 11
Arrival Friday October 26

Voyage 14 Departure Thursday November 1
Arrival Friday November 16

Voyage 15 Departure Thursday November 22
Arrival Friday December 7

Voyage 16 Departure Saturday December 15
Arrival Sunday December 30

If any of our spoilers want to volunteer for hardship duty, details can be found at the above website. Here's an excerpt and a view of the deck:

THE ARANUI
Length: 104 meters (343 feet)
Draft: 5 meters (15 feet)
Cruising Speed: 15 knots
Capacity: 60-100 passengers
Displacement: 4,000 DWT
The name "Aranui" means "The Great Highway" in Maori, another great Polynesian culture. The first Aranui was purchased from a New Zealand ship owner in 1959. CPTM kept her original name, because it suited her. Serving as a link between the remote Marquesas and the rest of the world, she truly was a "Great Highway" on which cargo and passengers traveled. The original Aranui was too small to meet the needs of the islands as trade increased. CPTM therefore retired her, and purchased a new vessel, which was also named the Aranui.

The current Aranui was originally built as a freighter for the Baltic trades, with unusually thick hull plates because of floating ice often found in that area. She was modified in Germany in 1990, when additional passenger cabins were added aft. With the additional passenger cabins, she was reclassified as a passenger vessel. To meet the strict requirements of international SOLAS (Safety of Life at Sea) regulations, many additional safety features were added during the modification, including additional life boats and life rafts and enhanced fire safety systems.

The vessel is French registry, and crewed primarily by Marquesans. They are extremely skillfull and very hospitable. It is often their custom to give an impromptu concert in the evenings, both for their own and our passengers pleasure.

The ship features a small boutique where various sundries, clothing and souvenirs are available. There are washing machines and dryers aboard, but dry cleaning is not available. There is also a bar and video room, which has a television, VCR and a small collection of videotapes. She also has a swimming pool and sunbathing space.

The electrical current in the cabins is 220 volt 50 cycle AC, using French-style plugs. If you have any small appliances, please make sure you have voltage converters and plug adapters needed to use the ship's standard power.

The vessel accepts traveler's checks and credit cars for on-board purchases. We regret that we cannot honor personal checks. Lock boxes are available on board for passenger convenience. However, we do not accept custody or responsibility for passenger valuables or money.
--------------------
Bummer about the No Personal Checks policy.

3. "Aranui Stops at Nuku Hiva"
LAST EDITED ON 10-15-01 AT 03:24 AM (EST)

The freighter stops at the island twice on its round trip from Tahiti. This main harbor may be the only one suitable for disembarking heavy goods, I'm not sure. The Marquesas remain sparsely visited in part due to their lack of deep harbors.
----------------------------
Day Six & Day Eleven, Twelve (stops at Akapa, same as Akapaa valley?)
Nuku Hiva - Taiohae

The first call the Aranui makes in Nuku Hiva is Taiohae, the administrative center of the Marquesas.

Inserted quote on air travel:
This is the only island with any air connection from a tiny airport which is a one-hour, bone-jarring jeep ride through the mountains to the only spot flat enough for a small airstrip. The strip gets its fuel from The Aranui. The oil drums are ferried to shore in our ship's small whale boats which later return to ferry us ashore as well. If we approach this island from downwind, the air is thick with fragrant scent of tiare and frangipani.

Pic of the steamer at dock:

Taoihae Bay is a giant volcanic amphitheatre, the remnants of a volcanic crater. Around the bay are towering cliffs streaked by waterfalls.

(I inserted this pic of the cliffs around the bay. We can see how steeply the land rises from the shore on this island.

It was here that a young Herman Melville deserted his whaling ship, and fled to Taipivai Valley. His stay with the cannibal Taipi tribe was the basis for his famous novel Typee. We will take you, by jeep, along a steep, winding dirt road, to this secluded valley. Taipivai Valley contains a treasure grove of stone tiki gods, the remains of massive platforms on which the Taipi built their houses and sacred sites. You will return on the Aranui's whaleboats to her anchorage in Taipivai Bay.

Heres' a photo of a group in the whaleboat taken in 2000.
Maybe they'll use it to drop off the survivors? They also transport people around the island on Land Rovers.

There is excellent scuba diving in the area, and the Centre de Plongee Marquises in Taiohae offers equipment for rent and certified instructors.
-----------------------------------------
MB better get his security tight. I hear IceCat, sleeeve, Webby, and dabo are planning to pose as a Dive Group. Talk about Deep Cover!

4. "Pic of Hakaui Waterfall and map of N.H."
LAST EDITED ON 10-15-01 AT 05:18 AM (EST)

I moved the pics I put here to the map thread I started so this wouldn't get overloaded.

I think this valley is Hakaui, but it wasn't clearly labeled.
This photo shows how steep this part of paradise gets.
