Snidget suggested we start tracking the pimp spots, and I agree.Though the typical reason someone gets the pimp spot is that they've been stellar in rehearsals - we've seen judges favorites get the spot if they seem to be in trouble. We've also seen people denyed the pimp spot when they clearly should have had it. Here we'll track who gets it,
how they did,
why we think they got it,
who else should have had it,
did the spot have any effect on the results? Or - anything else you can think of related to the coveted spot!

You know what they say -- no such thing as a dumb question!The "Pimp Spot" is the last spot of the night -- most see it as an advantage because the singer is foremost in voters minds, and the last performance acts as a 'finale.' When you're planning a show, you generally want the strongest performance at the end - so the non-conspiracy pimp spot goes to the person who's been killing it in rehersal, or has the biggest, usually upbeat number of the night. However, it's become pretty clear over the years that the producers will sometimes give the pimp spot to someone that needs a little help. It's too early yet to know for sure if the voting is really being effected by this, but as the group gets smaller, it will make a difference. (and welcome Agman!)

Some observations from season 5's pimp spots:
--Kat and Taylor got the first pimp spots and they were 2 and 1 at the end. --Look at how soon Ace, Chris and Kat got to sing last again after their first pimp spots. --Men repeatedly got the pimp spots 4 weeks in a row when they were down to the top 12. Only Paris and Kat got pimp spots in the top 12, just 2/6 women, while 5 of 6 men got pimp spots in the top 12. --Chris got a second top 12 pimp spot before Taylor had his first top 12 pimp spot. Forgot one last prediction--F2 is all women with Sabrina and Lakisha as the F2...based on early pimping. Prediction completely subject to change, of course, based on future performances ;) . And Lakisha will repeat "And I'm telling you" in a longer version with a killer dress. And Idol finally has a recent winner than is not considered "the south" even though Lakisha was discovered in a Gimme the Mike contest in Houston last year where she came in second to a female country singer(see youtube for clips).

The 4/5 of them are going to seriously split the diva vote. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised to see either Sabrina or Stephanie fall to that this week. And yes, I think it will be one of those two. They're not up to Melinda or Lakisha's level, and Jordin's got the cute-young-girl thing to make her slightly unique for now. I agree that this will help some of the guys for a little while. Then we'll have our "shocking elimination." I'm not sure we'll see two of these women together in F2.

I agree that we are going to see some serious vote-splitting this year among the girls, and I think it could happen more than once. I see Blake and either one of the Chris' rising to the top (F5 or so) because of it. And if it's a Lakisha-Blake-Melinda F3, Blake makes the finals (and I'd be very happy with that, so it won't happen!!).

Suggests to me that this season is really not going the way the producers think it will. Could this mean the heavily female guest artist roster could backfire on them and Chris S or Blake might rise to the top? Will pimping help shape the top 6? At least there are some reasons to still watch this season .

Looking at last year's list, pimping Jordin this week means they can repeat the pimp in a few weeks--so I expect Jordin to be in the top 6, and maybe even higher if she can have a couple of stellar performances.Doubtful that Phil, Haley, Brandon, or Sanjaya will get pimped at all (the last spot). I fully expect to see Lakisha, Melinda, Blake, Chris S and Gina get pimped at least once by the top 5. That leaves Chris R and Stephanie as ?? for pimping. The time is running out for Steph imo.

I suggest we keep track of other pimping, too.For example, last night Haley got some pimping from Simon that may help her hang on to the top 10. Kind comments meant to restore her, more camera time. Lakisha and Melinda got "props" pimping--deserved pimping. IMO Blake got anti-pimping. They tell people to make songs their own and then turn around and slap them for doing it. IMO Blake's rendition could easily play on top 40. Many artists are doing remakes (many are cringeworthy to me, but I am no longer a teenager/twenty something). Blake was entertaining and performing--not just singing. He was not going to try to be a diva for pete's sake! They could easily anti-pimp him right out of the show at this rate. I need to watch the rest of the show to see if anyone else got any other pimping. IIRC, Phil got nicer remarks than I thought his performance merited.

One thing to watch for the whose praise/slam didn't match the home experience is to see what Simon says on the results night.There have been a few times when he's noted that a performance just didn't sound the same on the broadcast as it did life. Doesn't always explain the judges comments but a few times when they and us seem really out of sync Simon has mentioned that it didn't sound the same on the playback. Not sure how different the sound mixing is for live vs broadcast but they might have to set it different as the acoustics are not quite the same. To me it sounded like some of the mixing was off for broadcast (the background band too loud for some people). Somethings may have sounded better there than they did for us at home.

I read this before the top 12 show and was happy to have a music pro confirm that sometimes the judges are calling out things that are not so. Interesting that Haley got some credit from Simon this week.
Masterclasslady is going to start reviewing the singing again. Her web site said she was writing the top 12 today.

Other pimping last night:Melinda: song choice pimping--getting to sing a song from "Oliver", not really a British Invasion band theme. Gina: some anti-pimping in how much they dwelled on her performance and the judge's comments. Steph: anti-pimping--could she be any more under served? Showing "we love you Jordin" sign as they segue way to Ryan talking with Steph. At least we saw Steph signs when she was through singing. Simon's comments to her were appropriate but, in all, she did not get much love from the judges. Chris R: anti-pimping by guest judge, Peter Noone: "I didn't hear much of Chris's voice..he keeps singing those songs that are "hhhhhhhhhaaa" . He never showed us the melody, one of the great melodies of my lifetime." Simon countered this with telling Chris it was his best performance so far. Blake: post performance and judge comment pimping by Ryan with Ryan's goofy antics (beat boxing and robot dancing). Lakisha--was Simon’s diss on her clothes an anti-pimp? Sanjaya--having him go hug the crying girl was positive pimping Jordan--judges’ comments --best performance tonight, wonderful performer; Ryan tells her it was really, really beautiful and claps for her Ryan is pulling for Blake and Jordan, lol. His opinion or producer directive ... er..suggestion?

Grrrr! Still bugs me the anti-pimping that was going on last night.First was Ryan bringing up Blake having trouble with lyrics in rehearsal--AFTER Blake had just sung all the lyrics just fine in the regular performance. Why bring that up? Next was the seemingly scripted put downs of Phil. Those were followed by a tounge bath for Chris R, and Jordin could do no wrong. Lakisha got the pimp spot after having to go first last week. Did it breathe any life into her fan base?

Sanjaya had romantic lighting and mucho camera love--it was so prearranged to enhance his teen heart throb status lol. Even one of the judges or Ryan mentioned Sanjaya finding the camera (that had to be directed, come on guys, especially the end shot!). Blake got the "best performance so far" praise that seemed sincere. Melinda and Jordin got negatives from Simon as though he were reading a script (note that Jordin still sang in the last half of the group). I look for Jordin to have a spotlight performance with heavy camera love soon.

Because if Phil and/or Haley survives this week, then pimping them next week would help them stay yet another week-- and would idol want to do that? Or, would they repeat pimp one of the other five first?

Maybe this was when he went NEXT to last? and he either was misquoted or else was imprecise in what he said? because he's really never been last, right?
but isn't this odd, that he so casually makes it sound like they don't think the "pimp spot" is intentional on the part of the producers? i'd LIKE to think that the producers really do choose the order based on the performances/song selections and try to just create a good show with a nice sense of flow. I know, I'm a dork.

Looking at this report I would guess Phil or Chris R is getting pimped next week since each guy has only had one pimp spot--and Blake was the most recent. If they really want Chris R to stay over Phil...then Chris R would get the pimp spot.
Combine that with this week's positive judge's comments to Chris...and the fake scare of leaving...his fans should help him stay in. Melinda and Phil are the two contestants who have not had a top 10 pimp spot...so it could be Melinda. I would be surprised if it were Blake or Jordin. Singing order 4/24: Chris R

Melinda Well, AI could not be any more clear about the pimping. The guys have only had one pimpage each and yet Melinda gets her THIRD pimpage from the time the audience can vote. This was an insurance pimpage--make sure Melinda does not accidentally get booted. AI wants Chris and Phil to go home. Period. They pulled out the stops--Simon on script (see East Coast thread) and even creates a "memorable moment" by kissing Lakisha. They really tried hard to spotlight Lakisha--maybe regretting dissing her in weeks' past? Simon even tried to suggest Phil was going home this week..we'll see if the performance of Simon loves Lakisha delivers the desired result or if it is a matter of being just t0o late.
