"My thoughts on the TOP 24" |
Hello all -Now that we've endured the torture that is auditions, and the dullest Hollywood week ever, the real show can start next week. Now, the 24.... Going into last night's show, my thoughts were that I wasn't all that excited with the contestants this season, but after watching this last hour, i realized i was wrong and forgot a few good people. I'm going to break the top 24 down into a few groups based on my impressions. Then at the bottom, i'll make some pre-season picks. LOVE 'EM, LOVE 'EM LOVE 'EM!!! --------------------------------------------- Sanjaya: Just pure talent, and very humble. Yes he's young, but he's damn good. Chris: INCREDIBLE voice. Fun guy. America will flock to him in droves. Surprised if he doesn't make final four, and even farther. Lakeesha: Love her. Aretha reincarnated. What Mandisa could have been. Hope she goes far. Gina: Yes, she's from my area, but i didn't know that until last night's local news. Something about her is intriguing, and i'm not exactly sure WHAT that is. Melinda: Like Sanjaya, i love her humbleness and her voice. I see droves of people backing this girl. Brandon: He impressed me with the short snippet of his singing last night. UNSURE - ON-THE-FENCE ---------------------------------------------
Sundance: I can't figure this guy out. He's got the pipes, but i think he has vocal control problems. I liked his initial audition, didn't love it. I'm shocked he's in the top 24. His Hollywood week was not good. Phil: Great backstory w/ teh kid born at auditions. Good voice. Blake: Yes, you can beatbox, but so what?! He needs to stop the beatboxing NOW and just sing. I think if he brings it back, people will tire of it and he's out. Its a potential crutch that could hurt him. Alaina: Good backstory, but not sure if she has it vocally. NOT A FAN ---------------------------------------------
Jordin: She reminds of of Paris. She's only 17, but dresses and looks 25. She has a vibe that I don't like, and I"m guessing an ego to go along with it. Leslie: How did she get through? I thought she was terribly off key in Hollywood. Antonella: Dittos to Leslie comments. TOTALLY UNFAMILIAR ---------------------------------------------
The rest. Don't remember them or any of their performances. WE'll wait and see. --------------------------------------------- Geekboy's 2007 DAMN-early picks ---------------------------------------------
Final Four Prediction: Sanjaya, Chris, Brandon, Lakisha Winner prediction: Chris. If i'm wrong with Chris, i believe it will be Sanjaya. Geekboy

No one really stands out for me except Chris Sligh. The rest are forgettable. Most of the girls look alike to me.

LAST EDITED ON 02-15-07 AT 04:05 PM (EST)Geekboy, I could not disagree with you more on Sanjaya. He just creeps me out, and I didn't see much talent in what little they showed. Sundance is on borrowed time. So is AJ Tabaldo. Same for Paul Kim and Rudy. How did Antonella get through? She's not that good, and from what was shown, she doesn't seem like a nice person at all. I want her to be eliminated first. Chris Sligh will do well. I think Blake Lewis has potential to do well. Lakisha Jones is also a contender.

LAST EDITED ON 02-15-07 AT 08:28 PM (EST)I think gb has the right take on Sanjaya. He is a great singer, yet seems very grounded and humble. I also like Chris Sligh, and think he could take the whole thing. He's talented as well as likeable. Sundance? How did they keep him on after he screwed up the words? Didn't they say that was an automatic ticket out the door? And his voice was awful the last two times we heard him sing. He should be an early exit. The guys are definitely stronger than the girls this year.

>Sanjaya: Just pure talent, and very humble. Yes he's young, but he's damn good. >I hope someone convinces him to get a decent haircut or at least have it styled. >Lakeesha: Love her. Aretha reincarnated. What Mandisa could have been. Hope she goes far. > I hope someone helps her with her clothing choices. Yes, she's got the pipes! >Melinda: Like Sanjaya, i love her humbleness and her voice. I see droves of people backing this girl. > Hoping she can come out of the shell a little - hold her head and shoulders up high - get rid of the timid posture and gain some confidence. > >Phil: Great backstory w/ teh kid born at auditions. Good voice. > Will we EVER see him without a hat? And WHY is it pulled down over one ear? Yea, I know I put a lot into looks, but it is important!!!! The voice is #1 but even Clay made some appearance changes. Handcrafted by RollDdice

I think the women, or should I say the girls, are stronger than the guys. The guys have a lot to prove to me. I like both Chris's though and Blake is strong. I don't see Sanjaya being the next AI, no way, no how. He is too young and has no experience to emote from. He is talented, but so is everyone in the 24. Sundance is no AI. I think he made it thru due to his style alone. I also don't see Lakisha making the final 4. She has the pipes, true, so did Mandisa, but her style has been done before. In fact, it has been done in every season. I don't see either of the back-up singers or the returning guy making the final 4 either. I just don't think they are strong enough. I like Haley. She has star written all over her and can perform as well as sing. Alaina is a superstar too, and there is something about Gina. She just has that IT about her. It is tough to explain. Antonella is stunning but her singing isn't strong enough. I like Chris S, Blake, Gina, and maybe Alaina in the final 4.

The other couple of things that really bums me out this year is that two women did NOT make it to the final 24. Those being:Porcelana, NY City work-out girl and Tammy, the bluesy/rocker pedicab driver. I think they would have added a bit of an edge to the girls this season. geekboy

I was really looking forward to hearing Tammy sing again and I was bummed too that she got cut -- especially since only 4 of the women made an impression on me and one (Antonella) was because she part of that mini-catfight. Seriously, I think most of the girls are mix and match (eye candy for Simon). Gina's the only one with an edge. I'm hoping that a few will stand out to me during the first rounds. There is a better mix of guys, although Chris Sligh stands out more because of his sense of humor than his singing. I'm glad the prelims are over and we can see some real singing (or not!).

Most of the girls are your carbon-copy-run-of-the-mill cuties who all tend to sing and sound like. BOOOOOOOOORRRRRRING.Tammy had an edge. Porcelana had an edge. Oh well. I think you'll be surprised with Chris Sligh's singing. I know we haven't heard a lot but i think his voice will stand out as something special. Looking forward to Tuesday and Wednesday myself. geekboy

LAST EDITED ON 02-16-07 AT 01:17 PM (EST)Hmmm. Out of what we've seen out of the top 24, I have three favorites: Antonella Barba: I like to see her on TV. Pretty. Nick Pedro: Good singer, good-looking. Chris Sligh: People will love this guy, as long as he doesn't go "all Jesus" on us ala Mandisa. (I don't know if he has it in him, but I am basing the possibility on his attendance at Bob Jones University.) ****** I hated that Hollywood was cut WAAAAAAY short!

I have been a jinx with the girls so I'll just zip my mouth about them. *zips mouth*I like Sanjaya, Chris Sligh, Beatboxer Blake, Backup Brandon, and would like to see more of the two cute boys they showed briefly... Chris Richardson(?) and somebody else. Maybe that Nick person. But really? I think it's too early for me to think about it much. I thought Sundance was gonna blow my ass off and I was very unimpressed with him in Hollywood. At least what they showed of him in Hollywood did.not sound good. One of the chicks that was in his group, Robyn Troup, is the chick that got to sing with Justin Sexy Back Timberlake at the Grammys. They didn't put her through. They aren't very good with the girl pickings this year I don't think. Porcelana and pedi-cab should so be there. pfft. "I learned two words a long time ago that help out a lot: 'Screw it.' If something's bothering you, don't dwell on it. Just let it go. Worrying ain't gonna do nothing but make it worse." - Bucky Covington

Hi Kilarney -No i'm not apologizing for anything. Yes, he picked a Stevie song for the first wave of the competition, and that was a mistake he made because he is young, he loves Stevie, and he got compliments on his Stevie audition song. As randy said, the song was too big for him and he should wait with teh 'big songs' until way later in the competition. He still has an amazing voice and I stand by my prediction that he will go far. So, No, no apologies from me. geekboy

>Yes, he picked a Stevie song >for the first wave of >the competition, and that was >a mistake . . . As randy said, the song was >too big for him . . . . Shouldn't an American Idol be able to sing any song at any time? This is what will be interesting to see about Sanjaya... will he grow with the competition? If he stays like he sang last night, then he's not going to be around for long. If he picks the right songs and sings decently, then he could pull off a Chicken Little. I think either scenario is possible, although I'm betting that he doesn't last for too long. Also... what's up with a 17 year old getting a GED? Did they rush him through a GED so he wouldn't have to have a tutor on set? If so, that's just crazy. If he wants to go to college, wouldn't a high school diploma look much better than a GED?
