"Somethin funny going on here..."
Some thought I've had about oddities & social climate of the show. Please join in if you've noticed the same or something different. Things that I am bothered by (after 2 episodes):

1. With 46 people on the island, all of them are lost and confused and looking for a leader (am I just jaded from too many leaders in a Survivor tribe of 9?). Why does no one want to help lead or make decisions? They seem pretty passive to me (even the aggressive ones like Sawyer).
(fantasy island explanation: so that Jack can fulfill the role of hesitant leader and hero? plot device?)

2. Why don't any of the 46 people communicate much with each other? No one asks much of each other. No introductions and campfire fellowship time. It's sad that Michael chooses a woman that speaks another language to look after his son. There are at least 10 other women walking around (i rewatched my ep. 4 tape). And then, when people DO try to communicate with the Koreans, they don't even use hand motions. Even I could think of a few signs for " you (point) watch (binocular eyes) my boy (point) while i go (fingers walk toward forest) hunt (bow & arrow)". Does no one play charades anymore???

3. Why couldn't anyone jump in the water and help Jack rescue the swimming girl? or at least take boone from him? They all just stood on the beach like, "jack, come quick, we need you!". Then, Boone has the gall to criticize Jack for saving him! Criticize the other 44 people sitting around! (I couldn't believe this - seems too contrived for me).

4. Would 46 people really be that individualistic and selfish instead of banning together for survival of the group? maybe. wow.

5. With Jack being so indispensible (as the only doctor and leader), you'd think they'd have a watch on him 24/7. Where ya going Jack? to the forest to chase a ghost? Not without us, you aren't!!!

6. Especially if I was the pregnant gal. I would not want the only doctor to deliver my baby - go running off and risking his life. Not uh!

1. "My best quess"
which Jack talked about last night is... they were all waiting around to be rescued. So why ban together and work together? We'll be rescued soon and off this darn island.

My questions are about the empty coffin. So is his dad now a zombie?

I've been Gothed.

I was thinking the same thing... why get organized if we're going to be rescued soon? No need for a leader to lead us for a couple of days, just survive on what we have and wave to the rescue planes.

The empty coffin got me too. My heart skipped a beat when I saw there was nothing in it. And what's with all those dolls? They're not they typical dolls that little girls play with now, they seem to be a collection of some sort. Cabbage patch or Barbies wouldn't have made me sit up and take notice, but these dolls are really something else. I bet they'll be worked in prominently (if it had just been meant as toys in the wreckage, wouldn't they have included some for the boys?)

LAST EDITED ON 10-21-04 AT 09:36 AM (EST)

yes, I can understand that for the first few days, but as a castaway, I would still be asking questions like, "how much water do we have?", "how much food do we have?".

And it still bothers me about the "rescuing the swimmer" stuff.

EMPTY coffin - yes! they love to leave us with more questions, don't they. Could be 'risen" or my guess is that he figured that the body was taken by boars or had the same fate as the pilot. I think that the Dad was a ghost, leading him to the water and plane.

Now, was that the back of the plane? Did he check inside and look for other bodies or survivors?

I hate how they cut away from the person, and only show us when they return to the beach. darn!

If Dad's a zombie, he'll need some spackle to spruce him up.

I was somehow thinking along the lines of the island being a miracle island. Locke now has the use of his legs. Jack's dad is now alive. However, that theory is shot because I remembered that the marshall died. Dad is probably just a ghost.

Yeah and why did he not tell anyone, kind of like how Locke did not tell anyone about his legs.

I am wondering about that dog too. Wouldn't it's cage have be in the same cargo area also? Did it come back from the dead too? Zombie Island?

The answer to all of them is - it's a tv show written by tv writers. Thus, everyone's an idiot.

DH and I were wondering the same thing about everyone standing on the beach while only Jack was saving the guy in the water. They were all there! I'm not a swimmer but if someone were drowning, I'd sure as heck be out there trying to help save them.

My big question now is ... what did Jack do in his past?

Love this show!

9. "RE: Somethin funny going on here..."
Jack's story is just guilt 'cause in the end, he couldn't save his father. Just like the speech his father gave him when he was a kid.

I think the body just dumped out of the coffin somewhere. It just adds to Jack's frustration of not having closure.

The whole dehydration thing caused him to hallucinate about his father. But in his quest he was able to find a source of drinking water.

And remember to keep repeating "It's just a show, I should really just relax" (from MST3k)

I have some questions about Jack's past, too. Whatever it was, it happened "two months ago," according to Jack's mom. Also when Jack said, "Dad doesn't have any friends," Jack's mom sneered, "Now why do you think that is?" So Jack did something to cause great shame to his father, or revealed some dirty secret about his father that would cause him to "go away."

At the end of the episode, Jack tells the other castaways, "If we can't live together, we'll die alone." I think this is also a reference of what happened to him and his father.

Anyways, just a few thoughts.

8. "some more - boars & monster"
safety: They've already had one "boar incident" on the beach - don't they have a night watch set up? how do they sleep peacefully? (i know, some of them don't).

the "monster": they don't seem too worried or scared about it (or the boars for that matter). I know only a few people know about it. But that never stops them from going into the forest.

my point is: Locke has seen it, not said anything, and keeps going into the forest. He doesn't seem very worried about running into it (again!). Is this a clue that the "monster" is benevolent? or at least, not a threat to their survival. maybe a help even.
??
Didn't Kate "see it" too? (thought i read that somewhere, didn't see the first few episodes). what was her reaction?

Last night Locke said he looked into the "eye?" I don't remember the exact term he used... anyhoo that he saw that the island was beautiful.

I keep coming back to the island is purgatory and they all have to "come to jesus" in some sense before moving on either to be saved at some later date or to die on the island.

I've been thinking they're in 'limbo'... Nowhere Land. The polar opposite of the Bermuda Triangle. We've never really been told where they crashed, just somewhere in the S. Pacific, right? What if it's the southern counterpart of the Triangle? Would a line straight through the earth to the opposite side come out somewhere around there?

Another idea I've been toying with... maybe Claire never does have her baby. On an island that houses impossible animals, the lame can walk, ghosts walk freely.... why not pregnancies that never finish? Imagine the suspense when they realize the 9-months pregnant woman has been here for 2 months now and is still pregnant, no sign of labour being imminent? What's our hero Doctor going to do... induce labour because she's overdue, or leave things alone as long as there's no problem since is nothing he can do if he screws up (no decision for Jack there, let nature take care of it).

I like this show but I have been so frustrated...is Jack the only person that can do anything? Like many of you have said, I would be there asking questions about water and food and what we were going to do next.

Also, before the show premiered didn't I read somewhere that these people were stranded on an island that another plane had crashed there like 40 years earlier?

First, I'd like to say that I'm French-Canadian, French is really my first language, so I'm not making anything up. The message is pretty simple anyway, though it is hard to catch it all because of the characters arguing and the static on the receptor. Thanks to my VCR, here's what it said in French:

"Il est dehors. Venez nous aider. Venez nous aider.
Si qui que ce soit entend ceci, je vais essayer d’aller jusqu’au rocher noir.
Venez nous aider.
Ils sont tous morts, ils sont morts,
Il les a tués, il les a tués tous.
Je vais essayer d’aller jusqu’au rocher noir."

Here's the translation in English:
"He/it is outside. Come help us. Come help us.
If anybody hears this, I am going to try to reach the black rock.
Come help us.
They are all dead, they are dead,
He/it killed them, he/it killed them all.
I am going to try to reach the black rock."

I was thinking of the "black rock" when Jack pulled those two stones out of the bag, one black and one white. The French woman said she was going to try and "reach" the black rock. Maybe the black rock is not a place but a thing. I think those two stones hold some kind of magic powers.
