As entertainment critic Roger
Ebert once said, "If you disagree with something I write, tell me so, argue
with me, correct me--but don't tell me to shut up. That's not the American way."
I think Jake had good intentions at the beginning of this season. His major mistake was doing what he said he always does: getting into a sexually charged relationship that will cool off around the one-year mark. Tenley wasn't his normal relationship, Vienna is, no matter how "different" he thinks she is from past relationships.
What was crystal clear to me was that Jake felt an emotional connection with Tenley. The "thing" he was missing from his relationship with her was what he was getting from Vienna: hot and passionate sex. If he were only in a relationship with Tenley, then he likely would have made the emotional AND sexual connection with her. As it was, he never had a chance to make that connection because the need was being satisfied elsewhere. It speaks both to the artificiality of the show, as well as to Jake's immaturity.
Jake's mom and sisters-in-law had the right first impression of Vienna. If her pattern in life has been to alienate other women, how is this scenario going to be any different? I believe she loves Jake as much as a self-centered, 23-yr-old princess can love someone besides herself.
