"Who will be booted next?" |
The theme thread tells us next week's theme is country. Who will get the boot?Given the country theme, I think we can already predict that Kellie will be safe again. I expect Bucky to be enthusiastic about country week too, and give a good performance and will also likely be safe. Chris and Taylor can easily adapt to country imo and have great fan bases, so they should be safe. I think Katherine should be able to do country--like a Linda Ronstadt type of approach. She should rebound this week and her fans will want to keep her out of the bottom three. Ace, Paris, Mandisa, and Elliot are all ?? for me this week. I think the boot will be one of these four. Since Mandisa also has a strong fan base, I think she can survive country week. That leaves Ace, Paris and Elliot. I do not think Paris has been in the bottom three yet (has she?) so that leaves Ace and Elliot as prime candidates for the next boot imo. If one of them is the last to sing, that may help them. Since Elliot had the prime position this last week, I doubt he will sing last this week. Elliot is getting more support from the judges than Ace is getting, though, so Ace is a good candidate for the boot this week. It all depends how adaptable Mandisa, Paris, Elliot and Ace are the the country genre--unless Bucky blows it, of course.

To be good at predicting, one thing you should use is Simon's comments on a particular person. Granted, two weeks ago he said 'you are the only contestant that doesn't compromise', but this week he told him 'you can't keep doing the same thing week after week'.the public takes Simon's comments to heart and to a degree i think they foreshadow the voting. If Chris was smart, he'd tone down the 'heavy rock' a bit and go more with the genre. I, personally, would LOVE to see Chris do Toby Keith's "How Do You Like Me Now". I wanted Bo to do it last year, but he never did. I think it would suit Chris just as well. For Taylor, i think doing a Lyle Lovett song would make sense. He could have a lot of fun with "She's No Lady, She's My Wife". geekboy

I know this is discussed in another thread, but you asked me why i thought Chris could be in trouble this week. This is my explanation.Yes, its about reading the tea leaves, but its also about using everything at your disposal to make a prediction. After watching 4 years of AI, i'm convinced that a large percentage of the audience decides if they will vote for (or continue to support) Person X based on how Simon reacts to that person. Therefore, Simon's negative comments this week COULD have an impact on his support. I'm not saying that the show is rigged in any way, i'm saying a lot of the voting public uses Simon's opinion over their own. geekboy

But that's just probably because there is no one I detest more than Toby Keith. I'd be highly disappointed in Chris if he chooses a Toby Keith song. I'd like to see him do something by Johnny Cash. I think he can pull off that growl. And, sticking with his rock and roll background, "Hurt" might be a good choice. >For Taylor, i think doing a >Lyle Lovett song would make >sense. He could have >a lot of fun with >"She's No Lady, She's My >Wife". This would be great! Lyle is one of the only country artists I absolutely adore. LAST EDITED ON 03-31-06 AT 02:58 PM (EST)Well, just to be up front here... I pretty much detest most country music. And country music that is obnoxious? The definition of that in a dictionary would have Toby Keith's picture next to it. Along with Lee Greenwood's. ETA: I knew the NIN version long before the Man in Black did it. But I think that since one of the icons of country music did it, that pretty much makes it country. Especially if he does it in the Cash version and not Trent Reznor's. Goddess of the Steeler Nation Ummmm, let's see...other than he's ugly (not that looks are very important in male country artists as far as I can see and if I had any respect for him as a talent that wouldn't matter at all. Witness my absolute adoration of Lyle Lovett.), he's IMHO not a very good songwriter, he's not a very good singer, he's pretty full of himself, his lyrics are full of cliches, the fact that he goes for the lowest common denominator, and I just don't like anything about him? I guess he's okay.

Meh. I've heard the song. I much prefer "Positively 4th Street" as an FU song. To each their own, I guess.Of course, I really don't like country music at all with the exception of a few very fine artists like Cash, Rodney Crowell, Emmylou Harris, Lyle Lovett, Dwight Yoakum, and few others. The five I named there are some of the greatest songwriters and lyricists of all time and in any genre, IMHO. To me, Toby Keith is the prototypical country artist: blindly nationalistic, fond of violent imagery and macho bluster, enamored of pickup trucks and beer drinking, and crassly pandering to the lowest common denominator. If my impression is incorrect, it's only because that is the image of him I have gotten from television appearances that I have caught. So he can only blame himself for that, not me. Orrrr...Daughter of Midwestern parents who grew up in and around New York, doesn't own a pickup truck, took none of the above politics with her, doesn't drink beer or alcohol of any kind, and has a Master's degree, but just happens to like country music and Boot Scootin' for fun (yeah. me.) because it was what was played at home growing up. We painted the house to the tunes of Johnny Cash, Patsy Kline, Loretta Lynn, Judy Collins, Kenny Rogers, Dolly Parton--I could keep going, but I am sure you get the drift. Country is what's on my MP3 player. --I agreed with Simon. I didn't like "Fancy" sung by Kellie Pickler. It was OK.This is about American Idol, and not blanket stereotyping country music fans. Lets keep it light, OK? Thanks.

I do hope Ace is voted off tonight. I will not and never have said anything mean about any of the contestants like I see so many others do on these boards. I just don't care for his voice; to me, he sings like a girl and everything he does sounds the same. Again, I feel most people go for the looks and not the voice on the show; look how Paula Abdul acts where he is concerned. I also feel that Ace himself thinks he is IT. Just my opinion.

Now see, I don't see him as believing he's the "IT" man at all. To me, this season has had a ton of "nervous nellies" performing and Ace is one of the biggest of them. Elliott always looks nervous, Kellie and Bucky had the nerve problems to begin with but seem to have relaxed some. Ace should go IMO because he is upstaged every week by better singers.

Mandisa sang a country song earlier in the competition and she did pretty good with it. So I don't see any problems for her this coming week. Paris has a great voice with lots of range so I don't think she will have a problem either. Plus, I think she did a country song earlier in the competition also. I do think that Ace and Elliot will have a problem. Ace more so than Elliot. Poor Ace..no falsetto in country. Elliot will do fine with a nice melodic slow country tune. Nothing up tempo. Song choice will be the key for Elliot. I also think that Taylor might have some issuses with this genre. I don't know how the Michael Mcdonald persona will transfer to country. Chris will do fine as long as he can find a rock cover version of some country song. Katherine I can't really imagine her doing country but she has a nice voice so it's all about song choice for her. Bucky...this is within his comfort zone. Song choice is the only thing that will mess him up. Kellie...this is her comfort zone. Song choice will be key. That's my 2 cents!

I think at first look the two who need to be very nervous are Paris and Ace. Both are already on the bubble and next weeks theme is their worst case scenario. However, don't overestimate Bucky's chances just because the theme is perfect for him. It sets a higher expectation and it happens a lot on idol where the person who has their perfect theme doesn't wow. Take Chris for example. You would think that singing a contemporary alt-rock song would have been the big bang. Well Bucky isn't as good of a country singer as Chris is a rocker.

I'm a big country music fan, so I'm really looking forward to next week. It certainly can't be much worse than this past Tuesday's show. I have a few suggestions for some contestants for next weeks songs: Ace -- "God Must Have Spent A Little More Time" (Alabama) or something by Rascal Flatts, like "Melt" or "God Bless the Broken Road" Taylor -- a Charlie Pride, oldie but goodie, would be work for him I think Bucky -- this is his time to shine. I get the impression the judges want something more serious from him, Alan Jackson's "Remember When" might be a good fit. Katharine -- I would love to hear a Sarah Evans song from her, such as "I could not ask for more" which is a ballad or a more upbeat song like "Perfect" Kellie -- why do I think she'll do a Patsy Cline or Tammy Wynette song Elliott -- maybe a John Michael Montgomery song, such "I swear" or "I can love you like that" which were also turned in pop songs by other groups. Or how about "One more day" by Diamond Rio? I really like Elliott, and just think that he needs to really show more emotion, I think these would help that. Mandisa and Paris -- I can't think of anything in particular, but they have both done country stuff before, so I think they will be okay I lvoe Chris, but am a little worried for country week for him. I hope he slows it down, and does a good ballad this time. But I have a feeling he will try to work Skynyrd in there. Now back to the original topic of the thread. I think Ace is going to have to really do his absolute best next week. If not, I'm guessing he'll be gone.

if he is allowed to sing Bon Jovi and he does it well, I don't see any problem. Anyway, sometimes, the line between country and rock/ pop/ R and B is muddled. For example, the song "The Dance". Is it country, pop, or R&B? Both garth brooks and Bebe Winans sang it. I'm sure you can come up with a lot more examples.

oh! I love suggestion posts!I'd like to see Elliot do I Can't Stop Loving You. I think he would be awesome on that! Shameless would be good for Chris. I mean, it was a Billy Joel song, originally, so he might as well keep doing rock songs. He could do Alan Jackson well too. I'd like to see him do something that's actually country this week, but we'll see. Dierks Bentley's I Got A Lotta Leavin Yet To do would be good too. Bucky should do Trace Atkins. I personally loathe One Hot Mama, but I think it would be cute if he sang it. tim McGraw is really perfect for him, but he just did that. Ace - Rascal Flats could be good for him greeneyes, but the crash and burn factor is tremendous. Since he's really nothing more than a haircut and a pout, he might as well just do something by Billy Ray Cyrus. I'll give him Fireman by George Straight cause it will allow him to be hunky and imaybe let him show off the effing scar again. Kellie should not butcher Martina again. Kellie should not butcher Sara Evans again. Ideally, Kellie should not sing again. But since we can't get that lucky, I think she should go old school and do Satin Sheets or Coat of Many Colors. She already looks like Dolly Mandisa should do Georgia Rain. Mainly because I love that song. It's spowerful but also kind of a quiet, which Mandisa needs to do. Any Trisha Yearwood would be good. Paris should do Always on My Mind. but Patsy it up. Connie Smith would be a great choice too. I'm picking Make the World Go Away for Katharine. Martina just did a version of it that kicks ##### and it would suit Katharine perfectly. Can y'all tell I've been listening to the Martina CD a lot. Half of these are cn there. SInce I seem to be going with the old country theme, I'll give Taylor "Hello Walls" that would be hilarious. He could probably work out a killer I can't stop Loving You if Elliot doesn't do it. But Elliot totally should. Someone should do Brad Paisley's Alcohol cause that would give Simon a conniption fit

I heard Elliot is doing "If Tomorrow Never Comes". That could be good.I need Bucky and Chris to do ballads. That'd make me swoony. As long as they're not cheesy tearjerkers. I can see Ace doing Rascal Flatts. I love "Georgia Rain"! It'd be nice to hear Mandisa sing for a change. Country music has such a vast library. I don't think any of them should have problems finding something that fits them. I do not, however, have any doubt that some of them will pick the wrong song and blow. That's the joy of this show.
