"Why I'm Voting for Jennifer Hudson" |
(Some of you may recognize me from my columns, 'Gay Survivor Journal,' 'Gay Idol Journal,' and TARGay Journal,' which appeared here, among other places, in the last few seasons. For those of you who have missed me, you will be thrilled to know that I am gradually returning to the reality scene. This impassioned plea will be my first foray back into the writing realm in several months. Please read and listen, and join me if you agree with my cause.)Just one week ago, my circle of friends and I gathered before my new Sony flatscreen to witness the first week of American Idol finals. I was drinking a Smirnoff Cranberry Twist, and wearing this cute/tight yellow soccer jerseyish T that I picked up for a song last week at Armani Exchange. My on-again-off-again boyfriend was there, and he all-too-briefly rested his head on my knee at one point, tenatatively but lovingly. (Could we be... dare I say it... on again? Time will tell, but it's looking that way. No congratulations yet, please, I don't want to jinx it.) In the midst of that potentially life-changing moment, we witnessed a very entertaining performance on the American Idol stage by a charming, outgoing singer, with palatable attitude and an impressive voice. As soon as she took the stage, with her pleasing tone, perfect intonation, and radiant smile, this girl seemed like the one to beat. As she sang 'Baby I Love You,' she strutted towards the camera with a sexy/tough growl, inviting us... indeed daring us... to accept her for all that she is. And accept her I did. Certainly, she is a bit... okay, I'll say it... odd. She is known to weep profusely at the drop of a hat. Her interviews frequently include non-sequitors and tangents, punctuated by giggling. Her sometimes bizarre facial expressions leave a lasting impression, and not always in a good way. Her 'fashion sense' is questionable at best (though she looked fierce last Tuesday, even her detractors will admit.) But, as those of you who have read my columns know, I support the oddballs, the wierdos, the nerds, the freaks... the outcasts. Sure, I'll roast them over the coals when they make grave errors in their image. But post-makeover, I'll champion them like no other, because as a former-nerd myself, I've been there, and I know how hard it is to crawl out of the pit of obscurity, dust yourself off, and accept the Diva that dwells within the hearts of everyone. Jennifer is embracing her uniqueness... her oddity... indeed magnifying it, and laying it all out onto the world stage to be picked apart, critiqued, and judged in one of the harshest ways possible. And I'm proud of her for it. So, all these things considered, imagine my dismay (and hers) when Jennifer found herself in the bottom two last week, facing immediate eviction. As Ryan forced her to sing 'Baby I Love You' again, she did so with visible dismay and perhaps even anger. (And this even more powerful, gritty performace further cemented my views on her.) Sure, some blame Simon for his criticism of her performance as 'oversung.' In truth, both LaToya and Fantasia were much more guilty of this, and Simon seemed to be aiming his critique at all three of them. But he chose to say it after Jennifer performed, implying she was the most guilty of this flaw, and there certainly are many viewers who are influenced by Simon's comments. This is certainly part of the problem. But I think the truth behind Jennifer's near-disastrous week is vote-splitting. Like it or not, America has lumped her with the other two African-American women, and chosen either LaToya or Fantasia over Jennifer. Some campare her to LaToya, and say that LaToya's slick, polished performances are a notch above Jennifer's rougher-edged ones. Personally, I find LaToya's performances to be technically sound, bordering on flawless, but completely devoid of heart. LaToya will make a great recording artist, but her somewhat mechanical performing skills simply do not draw me in. Some compare her to Fantasia, and say that Fantasia's over-the-top attitude trumps Jennifer's. Personally, I find Fantasia to be unapproachably cocky and self-aware... with a talent which is undenyable, but more limited than Jennifer's. Jennifer's voice is simply warmer and more appealing to me than Fantasia's will ever be. (I recognize that is a matter of opinion, but this is my column for god's sake, and so my opinion is what you'll get.) And, these opinions aside, why is there not room for three African-American women in the finals? Certainly there is no valid argument for eliminating Jennifer before marginal talents like cut-rate-Tom-Jones-Matthew and practically-vomiting-from stage-fright-Camille? And while I do love Amy's spunk, can anyone honestly say that her timid and vocally weak performance last week was superior to Jennifer's? Camille, Matthew and Amy have each managed to pull together a fan base which, at this point, is stroger than Jennifer's. If Jennifer is to be saved in the upcoming weeks, she must galvanize support from the viewing public. Many of you have said in the past that you support me, my opinions, my right to utter them... and now I'm asking a favor of my supporters. I call on the geeks, nerds and oddballs of the world (many of whom spend their time on this board)... as well as the former-nerds like myself... to join me in support of Jennifer Hudson. Because she is one-of-a-kind... emotionally raw and accessable... flawed, imperfect, and real... charming, self-depricating, and lovable... and because she posesses a glorious vocal instrument that draws you in and affects you. Fans, friends, and stalkers, please vote early and often for Jennifer Hudson. Like K-Lo last season, she can and will get through these first few rocky weeks, and go on to become the Diva I know she has within her, but only with your support, love, and dialing fingers. Thank you for your time.

>wearing this cute/tight yellow soccer jerseyish T >that I picked up for a song last week at Armani ExchangeSounds hot! Your assessment of J.Hu is right on. The fact that LaToya and Fantasia are more "ordinary" than Jennifer is actually working in their favour at the moment; they have no eccentricities that may turn off voters. Unfortunately, it is this very unremarkableness that will render LaToya and Fantasia simply uninteresting in the long run. Thus it would be a shame if J.Hu were to fall by the wayside early, on account of not having had time to let the voters get to know her and become familiar with, and pleased with, the elements of interest and "difference" that go to making an interesting artist for the long term.

Yah, I got chills from some of the non-jennifer contestants but they felt like more of the onset of food-poisoning-chills or fingernails-on-the-blackboard-chills or microphone-feedback-chills. Sheesh! Are these really the best of 75,000? (I notice too, how the number keeps creeping up). I again used my psychic powers to induce the people to dial Jen's idol number. Good Luck Larry! I am going to sign off the boards for now, as it is t-5 hours until the results show and I want to be surprised.

I think Jennifer was terrific last night. I haven't been a big Jennifer fan, though. Her past performances has always been too over the top or too erratic. This performance was much more polished. She did really well last night!

Did you see Jennifer Hudson go "Whew" when Jon Stevens was sent to Group B? Then she was like "Yes!!" when Latoya was called to her group. When George moved over to join them and she realized she was in the Top 3 she seemed almost orgasmic. It was totally hilarious.

Jennifer is freakish and adorable. I always thought she was hilarious, but my heart really went out for her during Motown Week when she found herself in the bottom two once again (this time with Amy); that look of resignation on her face made her beautiful and vulnerable. I don't like it when she cries but at least she wears her actual emotions on the outside, with none of that sickly-sweet typical-AI-contestant Kind-and-Sincere-Thoughts crap: when she thinks she's being unfairly browbeaten she (can't help but) let it show. And when she feels appreciated (like this week) she can be positively endearing.

LAST EDITED ON 04-12-04 AT 03:24 AM (EST)Welcome Jennifer! Here's what you do to vote for Jennifer! 1. Look in your local TV listings (in your local newspaper or TV Guide) for the TV show called American Idol. It's on the FOX network, on Tuesday at 7 or 8 p.m., depending on your time zone. 2. Watch American Idol on Tuesday night. You might want to actually listen to Jennifer sing, but it's not required for voting purposes. 3. Listen to Ryan (the Host of American Idol) for the number to vote for Jennifer. 4. Dial the number (on your telephone) as many times as you can for two hours...ATS. I'm not Larry but I hope this helps, hehehe! ATS...After The Show!

I've been a fan of hers since the moment I heard her sing, and she's come such a long way in vocals and in her appearance. I personally have loved every song that she has done. There may have been a few less than perfect parts (small parts) in a few of them but overall I think she is the best and she is amazing. Her voice is the best out of all of the finalists in my opinion.

I think Jennifer is good enough to still pursue a career in music. I didn't think she was going to win AI anyway, even though she was one of the few who "grew" each week. So now it's time for her to move on.

Sad to see her go... American got this one dead wrong. But maybe she can pull a K-Lo and get a smaller label record contract, so she can have more control of the final product. Also, I would not doubt it one bit if she joined the cast of The Lion King as Rafiki as soon as Fox sets her free. She has already proven she can nail the character's big song. Let's rejoice that she probably won't be singing on cruise ships again after this.
