I like him, and liked the performance, but I think it was a bad song choice for tonight. Some of the guys are trying to show a "fun" side tonight, but it's more important that they choose a good, strong song that will stand out. They'll have time in the weeks to come (if they make it)to play around with different styles and song choice. Right now, IMHO, they need to stick with the style that shows their best.

I agree...absolutely, and my 13 year old daughter said 'ewww' through the whole thing. The song is pretty much about an older guy and a younger....guy. Remember all the bad press on George Michael? anyway, even if it were about an older guy and a younger girl, why would she want to sleep with a 'father figure'. It ruined his performance for me and I didn't find him as charismatic as I thought I would. a little disappointing.

Why the personal attack? >My guess is that you >would turn me off to >Marty Robbins, Donna Summer, and >a million other wonderful artists, >that I really enjoyed until >people who would inform me >that Peter Paul and Mary >sang about smoking pot and >Donna Summer sang about prostitution. > >I've talked about ONE song. Father Figure. Are we overreacting a bit, here? >I always really enjoyed songs until >really smart people like you >told me what they were >really singing about..... > >What other songs can I hate >now? I'm a songwriter and musician. Because of this, I listen to the lyrics of songs that other people write because the lyrics portray the heart of the message of a song. (The music provides the soul, in my opinion.) If I'm going to be aimlessly singing something, I WANT TO KNOW WHAT IT IS. Personal preference. If you've got something against "thinking" about what you're singing about - then don't. Other people may appreciate the 411, however. Especially if those other people have children who may actually be listening to the lyrics of the songs.

125. "You wanna talk lyrics?" |
Let's talk. Here are the lyrics to the song "Father Figure"Father Figure That's all I wanted, something special, Something sacred in your eyes, For just one moment, to be bold and naked At your side
Sometimes I think that you'll never understand me Maybe this time is forever, say it can be That's all you wanted, something special, Someone sacred in your life Just for one moment, to be warm and naked At my side Sometimes I think that you'll never understand me But something tells me together, we'd be happy I will be your father figure (Oh baby) Put your tiny hand in mine (I'd love to) I will be your preacher teacher (Be your daddy) Anything you have in mind (It would make me) I will be your father figure (Very happy) I have had enough of crime (Please let me) I will be the one who loves you till the end of time That's all I wanted But sometimes love can be mistaken for a crime That's all I wanted just to see my baby's blue EYES shine This time I think that my lover understands me If we have faith in each other Then we can be strong I will be your father figure Put your tiny hand in mine I will be your preacher teacher Anything you have in mind I will be your father figure I have had enough of crime I will be the one who loves you till the end of time If you are the desert, I'll be the sea If you ever hunger - hunger for me Whatever you ask for, that's what I'll be So when you remember the ones who have lied Who said that they cared But then laughed as you cried Beautiful darling, don't think of me Because all I ever wanted It's in your eyes baby, baby And love can't lie, no... (Greet me with the eyes of a child) My love is always telling me so (Heaven is a kiss and a smile) Just hold on, hold on I won't let you go, my baby I will be your father figure Put your tiny hand in mine I will be your preacher teacher Anything you have in mind I will be your father figure I have had enough of crime So I am gonna love you till the end of time I will be your father I will be your preacher I'll be your daddy I will be the one who loves you till the end of time Can you point to the part where YOU think George is referring to having sex with an underage boy? I have followed George and his singing career very closely and he likes to use metaphors in many of his songs. The whole "put your tiny hand in mine" to me represents that he is in love with someone that isn't experienced in love but he will be "a father figure" to them and sort of lead them through it all with his guidance. To me, the whole song is about someone that has fallen in love and found his special someone but that someone doesn't have the experience to know what to expect from it and he will help them through it. I think the perverted part is in others minds and not in the song.

127. "RE: You wanna talk lyrics?" |
Some of the extremely questionable lyrics in this song..."But sometimes love can be mistaken for a crime" What kind of love can be mistaken for a crime? Why include those lyrics at all? What kind of "normal" relationship would in any way be mistaken for a crime? Explain especially this line to me, please. "Put your tiny hand in mine..." "Greet me with the eyes of a child..." These things make the target of the song sound VERY young. Don't you agree? Does this sound like a relationship you'd want to promote for your daughter? If it is, that's your choice. But some of us, seeing's how this is supposed to be a "family" show, may differ in what we think is appropriate for a "family" show.

Did you read what I wrote after the lyrics to the song? "But sometimes love can be mistaken for a crime" The love they feel for each other feels so good that it can't be right and feels wrong. Have you never heard anyone refer to feelings as "being too good to be true"? I see this the same way. What kind of "normal" relationship would in any way be mistaken for a crime? You define "normal"...please. "Put your tiny hand in mine..." "Greet me with the eyes of a child..." I see this as being between someone that has experienced love and someone that hasn't. "Greet me with the eyes of a child" means to me to be the person that isn't that experienced with a relationship. Notice the use of the words "eyes of" and that is why I believe he is using a metaphor to show the inexperience of the person he is talking about. These things make the target of the song sound VERY young. Don't you agree? NOT AT ALL! This song is over 20 years old and I have never heard anyone take it as such. As I have said, I see this song being about an experienced person in a relatioship with someone that doesn't have that much knowledge of what a serious relationship is all about. I see it as having NOTHING to do with age. Does this sound like a relationship you'd want to promote for your daughter? Absolutely, I would want everyone to experience the feeling of being in love. But some of us, seeing's how this is supposed to be a "family" show, may differ in what we think is appropriate for a "family" show.
Again, I ask...what lyrics makes you think that it is referring to George having sex with an underage boy? That was mentioned up above and I have yet to see the point. As I mentioned above...George Micheal loves to use metaphors in his songs. Metaphor: (from dictionary.com)A figure of speech in which a word or phrase that ordinarily designates one thing is used to designate another. An example from another George Micheal song (I Want Your Sex): I swear I won't tease you Won't tell you no lies I don't need no bible Just look in my eyes Do you think he is referring to the Bible? I don't...I think he is explaining that when it comes to this person he doesn't need anyone/anything to tell how to act...he knows. It is used as a metaphor. Is your attack of this song because of George Michael's sexual orientation?

>Did you read what I wrote >after the lyrics to the >song? > >"But sometimes love can be mistaken >for a crime" > >The love they feel for each >other feels so good that >it can't be right and >feels wrong. Have you never >heard anyone refer to feelings >as "being too good to >be true"? I see this >the same way. I guess it's a perception issue, isn't it? You and I obviously see this different ways. I love my husband more than any person in any relationship I've ever had... but it in no way feels wrong. When two people love each other, it should be a beautiful thing. I think you really can't throw around words like "crime" lightly in a song. Words mean things. > >What kind of "normal" relationship would >in any way be mistaken >for a crime? > >You define "normal"...please. One that won't get you arrested, for a start... ;) > >"Put your tiny hand in mine..." >"Greet me with the eyes >of a child..." > >I see this as being between >someone that has experienced love >and someone that hasn't. "Greet >me with the eyes of >a child" means to me >to be the person that >isn't that experienced with a >relationship. Notice the use of >the words "eyes of" and >that is why I believe >he is using a metaphor >to show the inexperience of >the person he is talking >about. I personally think some imagery takes things too far. If this is imagery, I think it crosses the line, when you add it to the afore-mentioned "crime" lyric. > >These things make the target of >the song sound VERY young. >Don't you agree? > >NOT AT ALL! This song is >over 20 years old and >I have never heard anyone >take it as such. I see it as >having NOTHING to do with >age. The whole "father" thing is all about age! It's very common for people, especially if they have had bad relationships with their father in the past, to try to achieve that relationship in a romantic relationship. I wouldn't think it's the healthiest thing. > >Does this sound like a relationship >you'd want to promote for >your daughter? > >Absolutely, I would want everyone to >experience the feeling of being >in love. George can have whatever sexual orientation he wants. My "attack" as you call it, of this song, is because I believe the lyrics are questionable. Last I heard, I was entitled to my opinion. If you like the song, by all means, sing away! Others can certainly differ.

LAST EDITED ON 02-25-06 AT 06:20 PM (EST)My "attack" as you call it, of this song, is because I believe the lyrics are questionable. Last I heard, I was entitled to my opinion. I never referenced you not having an opinion. You are certainly entitled to one. However, I do find it strange that you chose this song to be upset about. As I have mentioned, I think most of the things you think are questionable are nothing more than metaphors. But, you can read anything into the lyrics you want...have at it! ETA: How do you explain the words of the song "Save a horse, rida cowboy" to your daughter?

LAST EDITED ON 02-25-06 AT 09:33 PM (EST)Would you have liked it as well if little Kevin had sung the song? I could care less who sings the song...I don't see the song as badly as you evidently. I don't see anything wrong with the song and/or it's lyrics for anyone to sing. It doesn't bother me at all. Discussion is good - but I'm feeling some hostility coming at me here. I'd rather not have a perfect stranger hating me; I'll just be quiet about the topic from here out. Have a good one! I don't hate you by any stretch of the imagination...You have a good one too.

How in the heck you came up with the song "Father Figure" being about an older guy and a younger...guy.Remember all the bad press on George Michael? What? He got caught in a men's bathroom having oral sex with other MEN? This has nothing to do with what you are insinuating! Anyways, what lines from the song point to a younger guy having sex with an older man? anyway, even if it were about an older guy and a younger girl, why would she want to sleep with a 'father figure'. Does Hugh Hefner not come to mind? Have you ever heard of a "sugar daddy"?

Sorry, had to rewind that a few times. Tingly.Randy, he worked the camera, worked the room, the others were faking, and he can sing! Paula, he's a star, great eyes, hello. Simon, not the best vocals however he has the 'x' factor, that extra special something, brilliant song choice. 1-866-IDOLS-11.

There were, of course, the stand out good guys, but the middle ranks were all good...better than the middle ranks of the gals.Top 5 guys - Chris, Ace, Taylor, Elliot, Bucky Top 5 gals - Paris, Mandisa, Lisa, Katherine, Melissa Bottom 4 - Heather, Stevie, Bobby, David Sig by Cyg

Randy, original with a capital 'o', not sure if right song choice for his voice, loved his performance. Paula, exudes passion, amazing, saved the best for last. Randy adds never been anyone like him in 6 years. Simon, initially said didn't think he should make the finals, he was wrong, likes that he's in to the singing.Sorry, I can't get over his grey hair. Perhaps a makeover? 1-866-IDOLS-12.

I loved this guy the minute I saw his audition. He is definately one of my faves because he is brings something different to the table and the way he gets into his music reminds me of the days before the glitz and glam, when people just loved the music and sang it from the heart. Now it seems as though singers every move on stage is choreographed which imo takes away from what's in the singer. I say no to the makeover his gray hair doesn't bother me. Love, Love, Love this guy. Talented and likability factor is so high for me.

Sorry, Ace was too, "I'm sexy, you know you want me" for me. Ugh! I'm sure he'll get a record deal whether he wins or not, but I couldn't stand him tonight. The whole "X-factor" discussion left me ranting at my TV (and my ILs were in the room at the time!). To me, X-factor is something "indefinable". You call it the "X-factor", because you don't know what else to call it, but you know it's there. Ace had no X-factor. He had in-your-face, ain't-I-sexy. That's fine. A lot of girls and boys are all melty about him. BUT, it isn't "indefinable," and personally, I didn't buy into it at all. Slice n' Dice's Sigpic Chop Shop 2004

Yeah, I dug him, too, but I took issue with "best male vocalist in 5 years." I think Simon will retract tonight, but even still, it almost seemed mocking, and made me acknowledge that Eliott wasn't that great. I wish he hadn't said it, but had just said, "Good job," instead.
