"Shalom in the home"
Is anybody watching this show(it comes on right after Honey we are killing the kids)? I watched it last night and it was very good. I cannot believe that mother puts up with that daughter.

Hi - yes, I've seen the show twice. I don't blame the daughter, because she's the product of how her two parents have raised her, behaved around her, etc. Both parents have played a big role in the disintegration of their marriage and the horrible behavior their daughter sometimes exhibits.

However, I noticed that the Rabbi pointed out that this 9-year old gets herself up every morning, gets herself dressed and ready for school, and apparently fixes her own breakfast which she eats alone. Mom sleeping? Dad already gone to work? I guess. He also said that they rarely eat together as a family.

Looks to me like Mom decided retreat was the easiest way to deal with Dad's ranting and raving, and Dad likes to find fault with everyone but himself. Sounds like Dad only followed the advice for a limited time, then returned to his old way of blowing up at Mom and daughter. The Rabbi made a good point: "If you're trying to teach your child how to be polite, have self-control, you have to demonstrate it yourself."

I like this show, even when the participants annoy me or disappoint me, because by watching it, it encourages me to strive for Shalom in my home. It gave me a gentle reminder last night that I can reap great rewards sometimes, by simply giving my own son undivided attention, letting him know that he is of first importance to me, and that's a good thing.

I'll definitely watch this show again.

I know exactly what you mean except it seems it is the opposite in my home due to I work and my husband is the stay at home dad and most of the time he lets our 7 yr old daughter get away with murder and I am the one that has a temper. We do spend time with her and she is noway near as bad as the girl on the show. I thought the rabis background was interesting and he has alot of children. I will work on my temper now. Talk later

It must sometimes be hard to blend two parenting styles together. I'm a single mom. My son's dad is in his life and he sees him weekly, but the bulk of the parenting and parenting decisions are mine. I've learned to pick my battles with my son, and I know some people looking from the outside might think I let certain things slide. They would be right

Two areas where I stand firm are that he must speak politely to me. Getting upset is natural and fine, but screaming at me is not. Second one is the importance of being honest, being a person whose word I can trust. In both those areas, I know that if my behavior doesn't demonstrate what I expect from him, I'm sure to fail.

I wonder how much time the Rabbi is away from home doing this show? Now that could put a strain on any marriage.
