"Intervention on A & E"
Anyone else seen the show Intervention on A & E - 10PM Sundays ?

They feature real life drug addicts, alcoholics, compulsive gamblers, compulsive shoppers, etc. They tell them they are doing a documentary, but then half way through the show they trick them by getting their friends and family to do an intervention to get them into rehab.

At the intervention the family/friends tell their loved one that they must either leave for treatment right now or they cut them out of their lives for good (no more money, food, shelter, etc.).

Most of the people end up going into treatment, but some don't. They follow up the story and most of the people make progress after treatment, but some don't.

It's great fun - but kind of sad that it's all true - no acting here.

In the end, those of us that walk away winning, win more than just a loss - Audrey, Apprentice loser

I saw an episode a couple of weeks ago as it was highlighted on The Today Show and they interviewed the guy that was the drug addict. It was interesting but I keep forgetting when it is on.

I am "addicted" to this show. Pun intended, but seriously, I watch nearly every week. In Mpls it's on Sundays at 9pm. Way too many re-runs though for a whole new 2nd season.

Of course I can't stop watching when they are doing their drugs, but I also love to see how great they look after they come out of treatment. It's amazing to me how similar the stories are when you take out the actual object of addiction. Lying to get money is nearly identical across the board.

And you can often tell when someone is going to succeed or fail. If they say "Yes" on their own, they will almost always succeed. If they say "yes" as part of a deal other than to get help for themselves, it's almost doomed to failure.

Good point. They have to actually want the help in order for it to work. If they are forced/tricked into going to rehab they won't be cured unless they are ready to be cured.

I love the people that are adicted to gambling. They are the kookiest. At least the drug adicts get a high. I don't see what the gamblers get out of it.

You've got to know when hold them and know when to fold them.

I totally agree on the gamblers! I realize they are getting a "rush" when things are going well, but I don't get why they keep coming back when they are losing more than they are winning.

And in the indian-run casinos, when they are stone-cold sober and keep throwing their money away--I just don't get it.

And don't get me started on the casinos. How they can increase credit to people (and many of them are elderly) who they know are already deep in debt. It's nothing short of predatory.

6. "Why gambling?"
I haven't seen this show since I don't have cable. But I did a news series a couple years back on gambling and talked to a guy who would drop up to $3,000 in the slots a day. He told me it had nothing to do with winning or losing; he got a rush just from playing. His fingers bled from hitting the SPIN button so much.

Gambling addicts are a different bread of addict. They are usually high achievers and very conceited.

I watch this show too. I always miss when it actually airs so I have to watch it ON DEMAND, for all of you COMCAST subscribers, you know what that is. I think the most interesting one was the guy who was addicted to video games. It was crazy because I kind of see it in one of my friends right now. I just watched the one with the woman who drinks beer all day long. It was really sad. I really felt bad for her. However, I didn't finish the episode so I never saw how her intervention went or if she got sober...

Was that the native American mother?
Do you want to know how it ends?

(It ended well!)

My favorite episode was Kelly, the beer drinker. He was hilarious! It's too bad that he's an addict because he was so likeable.

He was the guy who was only going to rehab to get his dog back. Unfortunately, the minute he got out, he picked up his dog and cracked a beer.

During the intervention, he was getting totally crazy mad and trying to pack up and leave. Then his Mom says, "Kelly, will you stay and listen if I give you a beer?" He immediately stopped, smiled, and said "A beer?" Sad, but very funny.

I love that show, I wish there was more "where are they now". The one that made me the maddest was the young lady who was cutting herself - what a flaming jerk her dad was.

I too love this show. I was disappointed I didn't see it on 1/29 or I missed it.
