PLEASE NOTE: The Reality TV World Message Boards are filled with desperate
attention-seekers pretending to be one big happy PG/PG13-rated family. Don't
be fooled. Trying to get everyone to agree with you is like herding cats,
but intolerance for other viewpoints is NOT welcome and respect for other
posters IS required at all times. Jump in and play, and you'll soon find out
how easy it is to fit in, but save your drama for your mama. All members are
encouraged to read the
complete guidelines.
As entertainment critic Roger
Ebert once said, "If you disagree with something I write, tell me so, argue
with me, correct me--but don't tell me to shut up. That's not the American way."

"Bees and Fireflies" |
He feared only bees and fireflies, which was incomprehensible to Japhy. Japhy feared many things, fireflies among them, but his love of bees was great. After school would let out, he would often go to Mrs. Pippin's flower garden and pet the bumblebees. They liked him very much; he never got stung. He did get stung on occasion by wasps that made their nest in the plastic horse of his swingset, the swingset that nearly took off the end of his sister's pinkie. Japhy feared wasps absolutely, both in lower-case and capital letters. But not bees. So Mark was a mystery to him, with his fear of bees and fireflies. The mystery of Mark attracted Japhy's curiosity, and thus, his friendship, almost immediately. The two of them could often be found jumping on the Johnsons' trampoline until twilight, or until a bee invaded their play, whichever came first. If a bee came, Mark would flee screaming, pushing the pedals on his banana-seat bike as fast and hard as his legs would allow. Japhy would be left to pet the bee, soothing the noble beast's jangled nerves. If no bee came, the two would exit the trampoline with the first sign of darkness, when fireflies started their magical mating dance, lighting the night, an insects' Las Vegas. The two boys would catch them as they lit, and smear the glowing abdomens across the tarp of the trampoline, spelling dirty words in phosphorescence. It was this act that gave them their fear of fireflies, for they knew that God saw them and would punish them for their acts. They feared fireflies simply because their delight in them was so great, so wicked, they could not resist their charms. In all sincerity, they referred to the glowing beetles as "Satan's bugs." As time passed, the two boys' fears changed, but they always would recall the ecstasy and the fear brought on by spelling "shit" for all the heavens to see.
