I have watched this since day one, being a former INXS fan (many fond memories) & a fan of Burnette's productions -- Survivor & even Apprentice (while I despise DT, because of personal knowledge of his shady business practices).Anyway, I agree with some of what you're saying. I was so disappointed when RockStar started out with dismal ratings (blame CBS for not advertising it better to give people unfamiliar with INXS an idea of what this show is about). I look forward to Sun night's ep on VH1 & have wished they would expand it to an hour & Burnette can work his magic. It certainly would spice things up, a bit.
BUT, if we're concentrating on this show being a "talent" contest, then they need to quit trying to put the contestants into little prepackaged models of "bad boy" "sensitive guy" "flamboyant guy" "hot mama" "cute girl" "hip girl" & "hip guy" -- which is this show intended to be? Just let them perform each week & let us & INXS decide who is the best.
The subject of TY. I understand where you're coming from, in part. I was a huge fan of Ty in the beginning and had him as my top 3 to front INXS. But as the weeks progressed, he has gotten more theatrical & over the top, which IMO has overshadowed his talent. I still think he has about the best voices of ALL the rockers, but I do not see him as the front man for INXS or any band, really. I see TY as a one man show.
On the subject of Jordis. (Many people are going to take offense at the following). I felt she was the most talented of the girls & most of the guys. There is one thing that drives me nuts about her, though, and that is her lisp. At times it is so pronouced it just drives me crazy, but that's just my opinion. Anyway, she was blowing away most of the competition week after week, to her pinnacle, "The man who sold the world." Phenomenal performance. Now, the last three weeks, she has been progressively getting worse & hit rock bottom.
Now, if this show was in the finals in week 4, many of us would have thought wow, this Jordis can do no wrong, she should win. But with each week, comes more pressure, more stress from INXS to show versatility, creativity and skills other than just singing covers. That is why, IMO, I'm glad this show is being played out the way it is, so that we are seeing the falling of some and the rise of others.
It is important to see how one responds after a bad performance and how one responds to criticism. All of these people have huge vocal talent, no question, but there is more to be taken into consideration. Some of these people are failing when it comes to taking criticism (Marty & Ty, to some extent). Some are failing by not picking themselves up after bombing & coming back with vengeance (Jordis). These things show a lot about a person.
JD was riding high the first couple weeks then hit bottom with Champions. What did he do? He came back to show that was just one terrible performance & not definitive of his talent. Also, JD is the best of all of the contestants at taking each critique by INXS to heart & not getting defensive. He realizes that the criticism is not a personal attack, but is meant to help him improve & give direction at what INXS is ultimately looking for.
MiG has been fairly good at taking the criticism, but he gets a bit defensive & too sensitive about input from INXS & the house band. He has been my #2 choice at winning. IMO his other weakness is inconsistency & he seems more like a "Billy Joel" than a lead to a rock band. His most stellar performance was last week. Maybe it's because he has been in theatre so long, that he is stuck in that mode.
Lastly is little Suzie. IMO she has gotten better each week & I really like her voice. She has been taking the hits well & keeps coming back getting better & better. I think her biggest obstacle is that she seems like a little girl in this competition. She is just too darn cute & not enough edge.
So, anyway, after my long-winded explanation it boils down to, I love the show & wish it would have been executed just a little bit different from the beginning to garner more attention & ratings. I love that it is being dragged out the way it is, because it gives us the chance to see who grows & who doesn't. The music biz is TOUGH and there are so many one hit wonders because people aren't creative enough with songwriting, don't have charisma, can't take criticism, etc.
I could watch a RockStar Tue. concert night 52 weeks a year, rather than suffering through the silly AI popularity contest & the "yo dawgs" "you look so pretty" & "you are a fat Jessica Simpson".
