I would do it too if I had a night outdoor fireplace like they do. I have done similar things in my backyard. Not all who practice such things look that scary. I know I don't. The burning of things is a powerful image that sends a powerful message: that the thing they are burning is gone forever. If you just throw something away, then it's not gone or vanished. I agree, I went through an extremely hurtful and difficult divorce. It took me several years to recover and I finally burned several things. It wouldn't have had nearly the healing effect had I simply thrown it in the trash and put it at the curb for the trash man. I think that the suitcase that Kim burned was a VERY powerful time for her.   Top

I was really into the 'bra burning' exercise but that is becuase I am a year out of a breast reduction. Oddly enough though my 9yr old daughter watches SO with me (yes, I do TIVO so that I can make sure that some conversations are FF through), but after the burning excersises she asked if she could write some journal enteries about some stuff and we burn them in the fireplace. I asked 'why'? Her response was that she has some really hurt feelings that she would like to put on paper and then burn to know that they are out and gone. I don't think I would have ever thought about the feelings of my children and how those exercises can free their minds as well.   Top

The exercise with the burning of the bras and Miss Andy Paige was stupid but the other one was so powerful and meaningful to me. As a kid I was in 17 group homes by the time I was 15 and I always had to pack my stuff in the same old hockey bag. I kept that bag, I don't really know why but I did. When I was in therapy later my therapist told me to write down my most painful memories on paper, stick it in the bag and burn it all, put it to rest. Well I did that and let me tell you it was the most enlightening, powerful amazing thing I ever did. I'll never forget that night for the rest of my life. Seeing Kim burn that suitcase and the others let those memories go was great. What a good episode for a change. But the dirty ole bras, I'm still shaking my head over that one.   Top

You people crack me up! LMAO. I agree that the bra burning was a bit much. They should have washed the darn things and donated them to a women's shelter. If nothing else, a little person might have found refuge in one or two of them for a night or so . . . Sorry, back to sincerity. I have donated some of my clean, slightly used clothing, bras included, to a women's shelter, and they are always needed. Waste not, want not. As far as symbolic burning -- there is always the alternative of cutting something into a million pieces, then throwing it in the trash. In our community, we are not allowed to burn trash in outdoor firepits. The SO house would be paying a $2500 fine for their little bra burning escapade. It's hardly worth it! And, was there really that much visible difference in anyone after all of that?   Top
