Joe Don argues that he can navigate using the stars & the sun. He doesn't need John or the compasses. Except, it's raining right now. Go ahead, find the dipper and find North.
(DH was a navigator for the CG. JD is full of carp on a rainy or overcast day - and the others haven't a clue what he's saying about navigation w/o a compass.)
