"SSC(CW) The Girl and the Sun"
She was digging a hole for the sun when I met her. "Hey, whatcha doing?" I asked, and she just looked at me like I was the stupidest person she'd ever met, which maybe I was. Frankly, I was pretty stupide then, with no inkling that I was about to get a whole bunch brighter.
The sun was noonish, freaking at the peak of its trip. It was about to start coming down and was contemplating blowing a couple bowls to ease the crash. It didn't.
It started coming down off its trip hard, and she started digging faster. Jesus, she was moving. The shovel was flying, a blur; Big John Henry lived in this girl, ain't no machine could beat her.
The hole was huge and I was beginning to see her purpose. "That's for the sun, isn't it?" I asked, and she rolled her eyes. Duh-uh. Okay, so I was stupid. But I got it.
The sun was low now, crashing very hard. "Get some feathers!" she yelled over her shoulder at me, and off I ran, compelled to obey.
I caught a fox and set it loose in a henhouse, then I stood back and watched with a Hefty bag to catch the debris. When I'd filled my bag to bursting, I bolted back to the hole with my super plastic pillow.
I dumped the contents to the bottom of the hole (for I knew her intent) just as the sun crashed in, its fall barely cushioned by the chickens' remains.
And that's when I got brighter; the sun, so huge, lit my brain on fire, turning one grey matter to another.
I thanked the girl for her concern for the sun, wiped her brow, and went on my way.

Neat one, Dave, it is reminiscent of some mythology gems, a fine magical quality.

"If the race of man should be left naked upon a desert island, we should become extinct in six weeks. A few individuals might linger, but in a year would become worse than monkeys." (Samuel Butler, "Erewhon")

What a great visual this one gave me. I could see a giant whole filled with chicken feathers and the sun settling into it for a quiet sleep. The girl...racing against the inevitable and getting it done just in the nick of time. This really does remind me of Hercules and his 7 tasks or Psyche. Wonderful.
