Lesbian Idols Journal – The Last Two Standing
Six performances, six costume changes… so much lesbian excitement.
6. Diana DeGarmo – No More Tears
5. Diana DeGarmo – Don’t Cry Out Loud
Oh lord lord lord. Diana’s hair, so cute and feathered on Disco Week, was a badly-designed curly-whirly porno-movie early-SJP disaster. Her outfit for the disco song was a light pink halter-top with glitzy/garish eggshell sequins, which just brought all kinds of unfortunate attention to that springy mane of hers, turning it from Goldilocks misadventure to violent catastrophe.
The Don’t Cry Out Loud costume was almost as unsuccessful. The black jacket toned down the malfunction that was her hair; but the whole black suit thing was too business-womanish. Business-womanish is fine with me, but in this instance it completely clashed with her showy hairdo, and ended up looking strangely (and fatally) mismatched.
4. Fantasia Barrino – All my life
I love Fantasia, I really wanted her to win, I can’t wait for her CD to come out. But Woman has been wearing just one too many all-black ensembles this season. Some of them worked and some of them backfired; this one was really quite good on her - she looked comfortable in it and the multiple subtle silver neck adornments worked well with the rest of the getup. However, as I watched her scrawl her way through what was probably her worst performance of the night (which is no big insult since the other two were fantabulous); all I could think of was that black lacy bondage undergarment she wore a week ago, and the bizarre studded-pinstripe misfire she donned while she was holding out for a hero on Disco Week. I’m afraid that Female’s all-black ensemble, while elegant and tasteful, just brought up too many painful memories for me to fully appreciate it.
3. Diana DeGarmo – I Believe
Yes her hair worked very very hard against her during those last two performances. But ooh – Diana looked absolutely lesbian-power-woman-cool and early-90s-retro-chic in her first, very daring, outfit of the night: a tasteful, plain black blouse which (a) downplayed her extravagant hair to the point of making it look appropriate; and (b) had no spaghetti straps to tug strenuously at her puppy-fat upper arms (thus making her chubby shoulders look like they were actually connected to the rest of her body); for the bottom she wore a fabulously tasteless, flashy, iridescent skirt that was (a) cut above the knees, which made her look taller; and (b) silver with black details on the front and black with silver details from behind. Sure the whole costume was tacky as hell, but she made it work, pulled it off with spunk, and sang her best while wearing it. And besides, I’ve always thought that 16 is the only acceptable age to try on tacky clothing.
2. Fantasia Barrino – I Believe
1. Fantasia Barrino – Summertime
Fantasia looked posh and classy in her green “mod” dress for I Believe, and turned a mediocre song into a powerhouse performance. But it was her sensational yet retrained Summertime performance and costume that crowns her Fashionable-Dyke of the final week of competition. Whoever thought she could look so good in red? The effectively economical placement of accessories – just earrings and a diamond bracelet – completed the subtle and elegant look that I never thought Female could pull off so successfully given her hyper/ghetto attitude/persona. Pull it off she did – managing to look stylish and elegant (& also demonstrating her effortless versatility) in one fall swoop. Congratulations Fantasia, let’s hope your debut CD is just as unexpected and versatile and surprising and fascinating as you turned out to be this week!
