"Gay Idol Journal - The Final Two (Tuesday Night)" |
Please keep your eyes peeled for my full report on the American Idol Finale, complete with anecdotes from the Red Carpet and Backstage... you heard it right, Larry was there, and he has much dirt to dish! Until then, here's a wrap-up of Tuesday Night's performance.1. Fantasia Burrino Well, ‘Tasia got the full Diva treatment this week, with loving camera and lighting work, bombastic arrangements and backups, and a wardrobe that eclipsed anything she had worn in previous weeks. The hard sell worked, at least for this critic, who awards Fantasia ‘Diva of the Week’ at the most crucial time in the competition. In all honestly, I think if the producers really kicked butt every week, they could give every contestant the full diva treatment, and the show would be a hell of a lot better for it, but that’s just me. While her first outfit, a black strapless top and black wideleg slacks, was subtle and effective, her second one, a red chiffon number gathered at the breastbone, was nothing short of stunning (as was her rendition of ‘Summertime.’) Her final ensemble, though, sealed the deal for me. This emerald green Greek-influenced creation, with braided straps and carefully placed darts to marginalize her flaws and accentuate her highlights, was gorgeous (and, lo an behold, she wore a bra… perhaps she’s been reading my column?) Sure, Fantasia has some real issues as far as I’m concerned with her look (I’d start with the teeth) but she has certainly come a long way. And her riveting, emotional, performance of ‘Believe’ proved that she can make a mediocre song into a show-stopper. You go, girl! 2. Diana Degarmo Well, what’s to be said about Diana that hasn’t been said? Every season needs a villain, someone who is capable of misdeeds, and to me Diana was the contestant most likely to commit a crime of Fashion each week. This week was, unfortunately, no exception. Her first ensemble, a black bustier top with gold beaded fringe and a black and gold kneelength skirt, was relatively inoffensive. Later, for ‘Don’t Cry Out Loud,’ she donned a more flattering (and slimming) black suit, paired with a silver beaded top. But it was her second ensemble, with it’s pinky cream sequined tank and black wideleg slacks, that earns her a Fashion Citation this week. Truthfully, the way it hugged her shoulders and chest, then fell away from her waistline, should have really worked for her. Unfortunately, she somehow still looked pudgy in it. Also, the shade was anything but slimming, and the huge and overabundant sequins were so Golden Girls circa 1987. We know you want to look older, dear, but not THAT MUCH older. There are certainly some who will scoff at my use of shallow, surface attributes to judge our Idol Finalists. I say, to those who scoff, they can all kiss my tanned, hairless, Stairmaster-toned a$$.
