So. Apparently there is now an outfield fly rule.

Who knew?

LAST EDITED ON 10-06-12 AT 10:40 AM (EST)

To a non-Braves fan, it's obvious what happened. The shortstop thought he'd been called off the ball, and the umpire, reacting to the shortstop, wanted to be sure that the outfielder wasn't planning on letting the ball drop and then turning a 7-5-4 double play, which he could have done.

EXCEPT . . . the outfielder had no idea that the other two had such thoughts. Maybe he was thinking about the strip club he was going to after the game, but he certainly wasn't paying any attention to the game.

It was a complete bullcrap call. That's easily the furthest away from the infield I've ever seen it called. But the problem is that when Kozma was starting to settle, the trajectory of the ball was still headed a few feet beyond him - and it wasn't a play of "ordinary effort" as is one of the two criteria for calling the infield fly rule. And the ump didn't call it until the very moment Kozma was about to back off the ball - the other criteria is that the umps must make the call as early as possible to signal all the players and the other umps of the automatic out so the runners don't run into an out.

So I guess Nelson Cruz gets to claim retroactively that the ball he missed in Game 6 of the World Series last year should actually have been called the infield fly rule?

8. "Orioles tie series."
In other news, the Nationals are still not going to go with their best pitcher. Because, you know, pitching doesn't win games. What wins games is -- is -- well, whatever it is, they're not going to do that either, so stop the questions already.

Davey Johnson must be tearing someone else's hair out.

...well, at least A-Rod just got Wally Pipped on a grand scale. You have to see the back pages of the tabloids this morning: A-Who? is the mild case. Pinch-hit for your superstar and the replacement ties the game in that at-bat and wins it in the next? Money can't buy that love.

Regardless, feh.

11. "Welcome to the longest day of Bebo's life."
Y'know, one hit could win this thing.

And the way these two teams are going, one hit may be the grand total. Have you seen the Yankee heart-of-the-order numbers? Higher batting averages have been compiled by the Mets pitching staff. Meanwhile, the Orioles seem to have decided the last great bits of uncolonized real estate in America are the bases and no one is getting those homesteaders off their plantations. And as along as we're in the general area, we have the Nationals, who are determined to rest their offense until the time they need it most: April. And everyone's bullpen? Is gone. It's been Johnny Wholestaff on the mound for a few nights now, and the man is wiped.

These aren't baseball games, they're boxing matches. Last man conscious won.

You said it.

But I have missed this. I grew up on playoff games, World Series wins and losses, but this playoff drought has been painful. No matter what happens tonight, we Orioles fans can hold our heads high again.

Buck is looking like a genius for having 12 pitchers on his postseason roster.

As I write this, there have been two baserunners in the first four and a half innings: the Orioles just got their second and the Yankees haven't had anyone leave home yet. No score.

I'm pretty sure A-Rod could have done that.

21. "Does the ship go down with the captain?"
Let us review. Most of the Yankee batting order is exploring numbers usually reserved for interstate highways. The only person who was actually making regular contact with the ball made it with the ground and will be sitting out the next three months, or twelve if he decides to use the time for extra-intensive dating. The money pit stranded five runners, hit into a double play, got pinch-hit for again, and may not be in the lineup today. And the bullpen has been used to the point where the lone qualification for taking the mound is the ability to eventually drag yourself to its summit, preferably in three hours or more because it gives everyone else the chance to rest.

Somewhere roughly south of me, Bebo is shaking a fist at the sky and demanding to know why this wasn't all scheduled for last week.

LAST EDITED ON 10-14-12 AT 01:22 PM (EST)

That game was just surreal. I tuned in about the 7th inning and was glued to the game from there on as I just knew that Valturde wasn't going to give us the typical shut-down final inning. He sure didn't disappoint!

It felt good to see that useless money pit fall down flat on his face and then get pinch-hit for once again. If I was the manager, I would have benched him as soon as he failed to make a serious effort to move the runners around with men on second and third with nobody out. Most expensive bench player in history, and hopefully this will be the start to stemming the tide against those ridiculous 10 year, $200+ million contracts.

But, boy, the Yanks are in real trouble. The Tigers, sans Valturde, just turned in 11 2/3 shutout innings and their two best pitchers are still to come (Verlander and Scherzer). Meanwhile, the Yanks have to make do without Jeter the rest of the way and have almost everyone in their lineup slumping in a big way. They still have to use up two mediocre pitchers before CC can go out there again. The bullpen is overworked after three extra inning games in their last four.

Hate to see such an injury happen to a classy guy like Jeter, but I look forward to the Yanks being eliminated by the Tigers once again.

I can't say that I have ever (ever) cheered for the Yankees.

But there is no disputing some of the talent on that team that is nearing retirement. 3 lock HOFers at least, and despite winning the season and one round of the playoffs, this seems like the end of an era in New York (and in baseball).

But most importantly, go Tigers. Drive that last nail in the Yankees' coffin.

http://espn.go.com/los-angeles/nba/story/_/id/8514604/kobe-bryant-los-angeles-lakers-offers-pep-talk-alex-rodriguez-new-york-yankees

Which is nothing compared to the sports talk reaction yesterday when A-Rod was pulled from the lineup. Admittedly, it mostly concerned the abilities of his replacement on defense. According to the hyperbole, A-Rod would have been better out there with a glove on the wrong hand. No glove. Blindfolded. But as it turned out, there were no real errors at shortstop and the replacement got the only run, so...

Today's lineup should be interesting. Especially if it turns out to be the last one.

Starting at fullback for the Cardinals: Matt Holliday.

I'll be in St. Louis tomorrow on business and my hotel is a few blocks from Busch Stadium. Hopefully I can pick up a game ticket for a semi-reasonable price-- I've never been to a baseball playoff game.

33. "RE: The other series."
Max

A few years ago I was Houston for business. A colleague and I decided to go see a college basketball game (jbug's Memphis Tigers, then #1 in the nation, were visiting the Cougars). This colleague was a real pro at getting tickets. He had done this a lot in his travels, and said that getting 2 tickets is hard and expensive, but getting 1 is easy. His logic was that often a group of people will have 1 guy not show up. They want to sell the ticket for some $$, but know they will be sitting next to the person to whom they sell it. Thus they would rather have a happy fan than a scalper-raped fan. We both got tickets for the basketball game. I paid face, and he got his for under the face price. If there had been empty seats we would have moved to sit together.

Good luck!!

I could request A-Rod's seat on the bench, but he'll be occupying it.

I searched the Cardinals official ticket site and single seats turned up but prices were high. Based on past experience, if I wait until just before the game starts, prices go down as the ticket sellers don't want to get stuck with a ticket in their pocket.

Not only is he benched again for Game #4 (and thus remains the lead pregame story), but there are now rumors claiming the Yankees are trying to trade him -- to the Marlins. I'm sure he'd fit in perfectly there. Miami is one year away from another salary dump and my, does he have salary to dump.

The actual game is starting to become irrelevant. Much like the Yankees.

Hopefully it's the last time we'll see A-Fraud in a Skanks uniform (then again, maybe we *do* want him to stay around as a symbol of overpaid underachievment who is going to handicap the team in 2014 with the luxury tax hitting them).

46. "RE: It is now safe for me to say"
They sure aren't hitters: the last two games saw a total of five in the column. How does an entire team have a simultaneous power and average outage like that? Ask the Mets...

Front page of the Post was a baseball inscribed with a message to the team from the city, informing the Bronxies that New York doesn't date losers. It just elects them to the mayorship. And A-Rod won't be running for a while, unless it's to Miami.

GM Brian Cashman claims they're not going to change their Weaveresque strategy of waiting for the three-run homer because they are, quote, not the Bronx Bunters, unquote. Really? How about the Bronx Move A Runner Over From First? The Bronx Take A Pitch Once A Century? At this point, I'm sure the fanbase would have settled for the Bronx Lean Into The Pitch, The Pain Will Wear Off Eventually.

And now we get treated to a fall, winter, and possibly spring of A-Rod trade rumors. Gee, there's the gift that keeps on giving. How much of his contract would the Yankees be willing to pick up? Would the Mets do an even swap for Jason Bay? Can the Lightning Rod extort a few extra million for waiving his no-trade clause? And as noted on sports talk radio today, when this guy goes into the Hall Of Fame in a decade or so, is anyone gonna show up? Seattle: alienated. Texas: wants nothing to do with him. New York: lost. He'll be introduced by the one man he ever made happy: his agent. And he'll have to pay for the honor.

Let's turn back to the sports talk stations for a moment. Trade Cano. Release. Trade, release, and flay. Dump the entire team. Sign most of Detroit and call them the new Yankees. Treat both leagues as the farm system. Who's a free agent? Who can we get for cash? Doesn't matter: it's not a real season because it never happened: a real season is when the Yankees win and since that didn't take place, rewind and erase. And sign the Cy Young winner. From both leagues. At eighty million a year each. Then complain about not being able to afford a game ticket any more.

There are rational Yankee fans, but they never seem to make the air.

48. "RE: Cardinals win!"
The company I was visiting had three groups of very good seats, but being a playoff game, all were already allocated to people more important than me, so I was left to fend for myself. (This is the same company who gave me tickets to the BMW Championship golf tournament last month, so I wasn't feeling deprived.) Having never attended a playoff baseball game, I still didn't want to miss the opportunity for the NLCS.

My hotel was a few blocks from Busch Stadium, so I put on my Cardinals hat and left about a half-hour before game time to join the masses walking toward the stadium. Before long I ran into the first few ticket brokers but wasn't having any luck finding one who would split a pair of tickets to sell me one. During the fourth or fifth conversation along those lines, a woman overheard me and said she had an extra ticket. (It was the Byoffer effect. ) A ticket scalper was pushily trying to buy the ticket from her for $60, and seeing my opportunity, I said I'd give her $60 for it. This made the scalper even pushier and ruder, but the women (there were three in the group) all wanted to sell the ticket to me since I was going to use it personally. So I bought the ticket, face value $75, seat in the right field corner, and watched the game with the three women. Despite me being a stranger, we had a good time watching the game, and I walked a few blocks with them after the game before splitting up to head back to my hotel. It was a fun night.

Unfortunately my seat was in the right field corner, so I had no view of the arch. But this was the third game I'd attended at Busch, so I'd previously seen the arch view, and you're correct, it's very impressive.

St. Louis baseball fans are great, and the playoff atmosphere was electric. The giveaway was a white Cardinals towel, so that meant 45,000 people were simultaneously waving those towels throughout the game. Even though it was chilly and it started to drizzle in the 8th inning, not many people left even with the score 8-1 Cardinals. Very impressive fanbase, indeed.

Look, if the Cardinals win, we are going to have a World Series where both leagues sent a representative who won less than ninety regular season games. Is that what you want? Is that what FOX wants? More to the point, is that what the Steinbrenner family wants?
