"Pick the baseball playoffs, 2011 version."
LAST EDITED ON 09-30-11 AT 09:00 AM (EST)

Nice and simple. 2 points for picking winners in the LDS, 3 points in the LCS, 4 points in the WS. Bonus 1 point per series for picking the number of games correctly. And that's it. No fancy swirling bets. Ties are ties; no tiebreakers.

Deadline is noon Saturday. I realize that means that the first two ALDS games will be played before the deadline. But such is life, because I don't know how many people will pick before 5 today.

LDS:

AL
Texas Rangers v. Tampa Bay (Devil) Rays
New York Yankees v. Detroit Tigers

NL
Milwaukee Brewers v. Arizona Diamondbacks
Philadelphia Phillies v. St. Louis Cardinals

Got the other ALDS games right --

I haven't had a chance to pick, and I haven't seen any of the results. But here are some bad picks, guaranteed or your money back!

The only way this can work out for Boston fans is if the Rays come back to beat the Yankees, thus making the Yankees' decision to roll over and play dead for the Rays into a blunder. So...

Rays over Rangers in 3 (Rangers are a mess against a team with right-handed power)
Yankees over Tigers in 5 (Verlander wins twice)
Rays over Yankees in 6

Diamondbacks over Brewers in 4 (TERRIBLE road team)
Phillies over Cardinals in 3 (By the time Carpenter pitches, Cards will be on life support)
Phillies over Diamondbacks in 5

Phillies over Rays in 6

The ChiSox manager's position has been filled -- by Robin Ventura.

I'm expecting plenty of baserunning and pitcher confrontation issues.

By this point, I figured we'd have most of the first round results. Instead, we have exactly one:

Texas over Tampa Bay in 4.

I expected that Price would lose for the Rays when the series was 1-1 coming to him, but I actually never believed that Shields or Hellickson would lose.

All the other series have a 5th game coming up. In other words, there's a huge dollop of luck in each one.

As far as Ventura . . . eh. Better than Guillen, I guess.

The bullpen....blame Tony for pulling Motte after only his third runner in all of the post season with a hurt Hamilton who couldn't get his bat in the same state the night before with Motte's fastball.

My thought was that La Russa overmanaged things in Game 2. Motte wasn't getting pounded - the first hit was a bloop that barely missed getting caught between Furcal and Holliday, and then there was the steal by Kinsler on a close play before a single plus misplay by Pujols put runners at second and third with none out.

So let's see... you pull one of your best strikeout pitchers to bring in an ancient pitcher with a very low K rate against a hobbling Hamilton? I'd have left Motte in there to try and get a strikeout - or perhaps go with someone like Dotel who can also get strikeouts.

Anyway. What an iconic performance by Pujols last night to make up for his error in Game 2! 5-for-6 with 3 HR, 6 RBI.

What a dreadful game from La Russa. This might be the worst managing job I've ever seen, and I've seen some beauties over the years.

Twice, Craig was thrown out trying to steal second with Albert Pujols up. WTF. Even if he was successful, you know the Rangers would then walk Pujols with Holliday having a lousy series. La Russa claimed it was "to open up a hole on the second base side". Newsflash: Pujols has hit the opposite way into the hole 11 times all year; meanwhile, he's hit 42 home runs. He's four times more likely to hit a HR than to pound it into a gaping hole vacated by a 2B. Kind of a big deal when you're trying to go ahead (as in the case of the 7th inning) and when you're trying to tie the game (as in the case of the 9th inning).

And, seriously, you're going to blame your bullpen screw-ups on the BP coach not hearing you clearly? Everyone knew that Lance Lynn was unavailable, yet you're going to bring him in to intentionally walk a guy and then pull him, then claim that the BP guy didn't understand? C'mon, Tony, you've been managing a thousand years by now, you gotta have a system in place for communicating with the BP. Then you leave in Rzepczynski to face a righty in Napoli when Motte was available (or should have been)? If you say that there was a miscommunication about bringing in Lynn, then why not stand right there on the mound and get the BP coach's attention that you want the other guy warming up NOW? He knows how to look over into the bullpen and see if somebody's warming up or not.

The Red Sox used to have a policy (I'm not sure if any of Francona's policies will survive the new regime) of not trying to steal a base when your top HR threat was up, because the other team was likely to walk the slugger if first base was open.

That might be a good policy for LaRussa to adopt as long as he has Pujols.

I'm not saying it wasn't a good game but when you run out of bench players and pitchers due to NL rules I think it makes a mess of the game. Plus the cold of almost playing in November and St. Louis having home field due to the All-Star game adds to the mess.

I'm in agreement that the All-Stars rule is bogus, we have a 90-win wild card team who barely squeaked in hosting a game 7 over a 96-win division champion. Really?

But, NL rules or no NL rules, managers know what they've got in the bullpen and on the bench and should plan accordingly. If they run out of players, tough luck and learn to manage better. I didn't think it was a mess of a game - Ron Washington could have put Feliz out for a second inning in the 10th but he chose to pull the guy (who used to be a starter so he knows how to go longer than an inning) for an ancient reliever who isn't used to having to close games. Putting Mark Lowe out there in the 11th is completely Ron Washington's fault. He's got plenty of capable pitchers and everyone's had at least two days of rest. Put C.J. Wilson out there in the 11th if you have to!

Yes, the managers can manage better but when you are forced the pitchers to hit and you are in a championship game where one hit or one run at any time could be the winner we got pitch hitters and pitchers pulled before they should have thus we had guys in the end who were not the best of the best deciding who is the WSC. I like the strategy of the NL but just not when it comes to the WS and finding the champion especially when games 6 and 7 should have been played in TX with the DH. I think the out come would have been different in Game 6.

This is why I say it's a mess.

Does this happen in Football, Basketball, or Hockey? No, unless a guy gets hurt, thrown out, or something strange happens. Even the SC you roll 3 or 2 lines instead of your 4 normal lines thus the best decided it. Yes, a 4th liner guy can score the Cup winner but they are normally part of the game and things happen.

I'm also not saying I want the regular season champ automatically in the finals. I like when underdogs win and the drama it grows in the playoffs. I like the Cards winning (some in Detroit wanted TX to win to say we lost to the Champs...I call BS...we still lost) but wanted to see the best of both teams deciding it.

I'm feeling much like the Rangers.

In our office pool, for the final score I had Rangers 7, Cardinals 5 in one box. In the other box I had Rangers 9, Cardinals 7.

$60 pay out, gone to somebody else.

Hoping for something tonight...

After the Cards failed to score in the 6th inning with bases loaded and two out, keeping the score at 4-4, I gave up and went to bed. Guess I missed a few things.

As did I... (not because I gave up on the game, but because I was dead tired and needed some sleep).

Tonight, the PVR is set for the whole game!

I fell asleep after Josh Hamilton's homer in the top of the 10th. How lame was that?

Congratulations to michel, who won this pool despite picking Milwaukee to beat Detroit in the Series. . . .

Well, how about that?! Funniest thing is that Freese (3 runs after I added him just for game #162) was also responsible for my Fantasy league win!!
