"New Season"

thought I would get this forum started up again, since no one has posted in a long time.

Who's going to be watching the preview for the new season on Friday night?

Can't wait for it to start, and see how they pull this off again. Any ideas of how it will work this time? And, of course, Paul the Butler is back, so that should make it worth watching.

I heard that it is a woman this time and she is a real millionaire. Joan Millionaire?

"I heard that it is a woman this time and she is a real millionaire. Joan Millionaire? "

I think that would be an awesome premise for the show. Of course, I'd love to see it be the reverse where they tell them that the person is an ordinary joe or worth only a mere million or something like that when they are really worth a lot more.

At any rate..Evan was goofy as hell but the show was entertaining so I'll most likely watch.

One rumour is that it will be the same set up as last time except that all the women will be from foreign countries who did not see the first go around. Hopefully "Joe" will be smarter then an eraser this time.

I saw - and was very disappointed by - the preview last night. It will be with foreign women, but I think "Joe" is still an American (I couldn't tell since he spoke only one short sentence in the preview, and they had that music in the background).

As for Joe being smarter than an eraser, I really hope there isn't anyone in the US (without a disability) as dumb or dumber than Evan Marriott. At the very least, I hope he doesn't sniff the food on his fork this time around (though that was kinda funny to watch!).

I wasn't home but I recorded from 8-10PM and forwarded my way from the 9PM hour until I find the promo at what looked to be at about 9:30PM.

If you listened to the intro country tune during the promo, it was a custom tune made for the show... and it stated that Joe is "riding out of Texas"

Plus, whe he said "they're in for a surprise!" at the end of the promo, there was a clear Texas twang, so clearly the guy is from Texas.

I'll try and post some vidcaps this afternoon.. but clearly the report we posted a couple of weeks ago was true:

I saw the promo during the Emmy's Sunday night and I can almost guarantee that I know the next Joe Millionaire. He is from Midland, Texas and his name is David Smith.

OK TexGal, what else can you tell us? How old is he? What's his background? What's his occupation?

Is he another penniless construction worker like Evan Marriott? Is he also secretly an underwear model like Evan was?

Thanks,

Well, he went to McMurry University in Abilene, Texas and he played baseball, but he left school before he graduated. Last I knew of he never graduated and he went on ride bulls in the rodeo. He is quite a charmer... not the brightest guy but he can charm you nonetheless.

Sorry I could have added a little more info. He is either 25 or 26 years old and his family use to have money because they were in the oil business, but oil went belly up in Texas so I don't know how they financially stand now. He never did any underwear modeling that I know of, but from what I remember his body does look as the promo showed.

Just trying a side-by-side comparison:

Yep, that looks like him to me.

His school bio says:

Hometown: Bellville, Texas
Events: Bareback
Major: Biology
Accomplishments:
2000 "Rookie of the Year" C.P.R.A.

So apparently he was a freshman at the junior college in Fall 2000... and was there for the 2001-2002 team. So since junior colleges are only two years, does that mean he was at McMurry University in Fall 2002?

Or are you saying he dropped out of McMurry University sometime before 2000 and resurfaced at WCJC in Fall 2000?

If he was a true 18 year-old freshman in Fall 2000 than that'd make him no more than say 22 now. Can that be right?

Well, he certainly doesn't make much money on the Cowboy's Professional Rodeo Association tour:

2002 BAREBACK PRIZE WINNINGS:
1. $3,312.45 ROBLES, CHRIS
2. $2,373.36 FISHER, STEPHEN
3. $2,325.66 MCLOUD, GERALD
4. $2,257.41 OWEN, JOSH IRA
5. $1,995.66 MIKOLAVEZYK, KERMIT
6. $1,817.84 COLE, JOSH
7. $1,737.61 MILLER, BUBBA
8. $1,612.30 SMITH, DAVID

It also looks like there's a $500 scholarship that goes to the rookie of the year -- maybe he used that to go to WCJC. He sure didn't make it there on his prize money!

It appears he was still at WCJC this spring as he has rodeo results for this year:

http://www.wcjc.edu/athletics_n/rodeostandings.asp

Can you find him in the picture for the 2002-2003 year? All those cowboy hats make it hard to tell if he is there. I would upload it but it is too large.

He also has results in a pro rodeo even in Texas in April (I guess he gave up his amateur status *snicker*).

March 20-22, 2003
Smith Paces Pioneer Rodeo Team

Saddlebronc rider Cody Smith took over sole possession of 2nd place in the regional standings by riding consistently at the annual Texas A & M NIRA rodeo held March 20-22 in College Station, TX.

The Palmer, TX native won the first round of the bronc riding (72 pts.), placed 2nd in the short round (71 pts.) and split 1st and 2nd in the average with a combined score of 143 points on two head. This is the 2nd consecutive rodeo that the freshman cowboy has won the average and he now trails only Cody DeMoss of Northeast Texas Community College.

Bareback sensation Zach Dishman kept up his winning ways by riding aggressively all weekend. The Sophomore cowboy won the 1st round (75 pts.), split 2nd-4th in the short round (73 pts.) and won 2nd in the average with a combined score of 148 points on two head. Dishman is currently in 2nd place in the regional bareback riding standings.

Bellville cowboy David Smith moved up in the bareback riding standings by splitting 2nd and 3rd in round #1 (73 pts.), and splitting 3rd and 4th in the average with a combined score of 144 points on two head. Smith moved from the sixth position up to the number 4 position in the regional standings.

Feb. 27-March 3, 2003
Pioneer Rodeo Team Begins Spring Competition

The WCJC Men’s rodeo team began the spring rodeo season with a 2nd place overall win at the annual Sam Houston State University NIRA Rodeo held February 27 – March 1 at the Walker County Fairgrounds in Huntsville, TX.

Leading the way for the Pioneers was freshman cowboy Cody Smith. The Palmer, Texas native dominated the Saddle bronc riding competition by winning 2nd in the first round (72 points), split 1st and 2nd in the short round (68pts.) and winning 1st in the average with a combined score of 140 points on two head. The freshman cowboy is currently 3rd in the regional standings trailing Cody DeMoss of Northeast Texas Community College and Jake Dubose of McNeese State University.

Team Roper extraordinaire Cody Thornton moved his way into the number 6 position in the regional standings by roping solidly all weekend. The freshman paired up with Tim Wilson of Southwest Texas Jr. College to place 10th in round 1 (7.1 seconds), 2nd in the short round (6.1 seconds) and 2nd in the average with a combined time of 13.2 seconds on two head. Thornton also placed 4th in the average (18.0 seconds on two) while roping with Eddie Sanchez of Texas A & M University at Kingsville.

Regional bareback riding leader Zach Dishman kept up his winning ways by placing 2nd in the 1st round (72 points), splitting 3rd and 4th in the short round (72 pts.) and winning 3rd in the average with a combined score of 144 points on two head. The Beaumont cowboy appears to be headed back to the College National Finals Rodeo in June in Casper, Wyoming.

Reining Southern region bareback riding champion David Smith placed in bareback riding as well. The Bellville native placed 5th in round #1 (69 pts.), split 3rd and 4th in the short round (72 pts.) and placed 5th in the average with a combined score of 141 points on two head.

So ... we know he's been at Wharton Co. JuCo for 2 years: 2001-03, which uses up his JuCo eligibility. We know he is also riding on the CPRA circuit, and started doing so in 1999-2000. We don't know much else.

SB-

They keep listing his hometown as Bellville and that is wrong becuase I know that he is from Midland. He was Midland Lee's quarterback and he graduated in May of 1997. He came to McMurry in the August of 1997 and he played baseball for them for the 97-98 season and the 98-99 season then he left and went to BJC. I don't know why he went to a four year and then to a two year other than the fact of the rodeo team they have. And just because I am a born and raised Texan doesn't mean that I do not think it is hilarious that some colleges have these teams. I myself have never even been on a horse. I have known David since I was a senior in high school and I am 24 years old and he graduated a year ahead of me so I know that he is either 25 or 26.

You'd had to be living in a cave not to have heard SOMETHING about this show and how it works. Do you guys believe these women are really uninformed?

This guy looks like yet another poor schmo sucked into TV land just to be shredded up and spit out, and FOX is the most sensational of all networks.

He has something in his closet, they always do. Perhaps his testes are as flat as a pancake from all that horse time.

The Butler will again be the great defender of all schmos against these evil women of the world.

Evan plays a humping bull dog on Charmed. I wonder how that casting call read.

I had the same thoughts as you when they revealed how they would get away with the trick a second time by casting European ho-pefuls. Unless European women are living in hermetically sealed bell jars, they probably all know. It's not like Evan's presence in France was low-profile.
And the guy looks like Woody Harrelson's underfed lil brother.

I think you too are overstating the impact of American pop culture in the average European's lifestyle.

I doubt any of them ever heard of Joe Millionaire, never mind watched it. And I'm sure "what reality shows do you watch" was one of the very first screening questions on the application.

"Pop Idol" was the biggest thing to hit the UK in years... yet until it arrived in the US as "American Idol" no one knew a thing about it, and when it did arrive, folks were comparing it to "Star Search," not the UK show

The highest rated television show in England last summer was CSI. (editing to add, summer 2002, not summer 2003).

I'm not saying Europe actually watched JM last year with bated breath, but I think at least a hint of the gimmick has made it to European venues.

In other words, I still say most of these women know. But that can be the new angle in watching this season - who is acting like they don't, effectively, and who is actually in the dark re the bogus fortune?

At any rate, I will at least catch the first episode, and doubtless be sucked into the quagmire that will be the 2nd season.

"But...."
Posted by Bucky Katt on 09-30-03 at 05:24 PM
CSI was the highest rate show in England because it was on TV in England. Joe Millionaire was not. Versions of Survivor and American Idol were on TV in Europe before here in North America yet few people knew about them. I agree with SB, very very few people in Europe would have heard about Joe Millionaire and thus had no clue what the twist is. Its more likely that if they heard about anything it would have been the Bachelor and the producers could just tell them that Joe Millionaire is a similar show!

BTW - CSI is higher rated then Coronation Street? I thought the whole country stopped what they were doing to watch that show.

It was a fluke for the summer when they first got it. Can understand the appeal of seeing night-in-Vegas-desert scenes when living in London.
The other two shows people were watching were ER and West Wing.
While I realize that most of Europe, understandably, is not privy to/just says no to our nonstop stream of pop tv dreck, I truly think some of these women will know something is up in advance. But then, I am not convinced all of the JM first season hopefuls were completely clueless, either.

I just hope if Europe gets to see this one due to the European angle that we (Americans) don't come off as complete idiots. The current Real World gang is already solidifying every ugly american stereotype in their wake.

Also keep in mind England (actually the United Kingdom) is ONE COUNTRY in Europe. Europe is far for than just England... and my understanding is there is only one woman from each country on the show.

I'm confident that they could find one women in all of England that was not familiar with the show. And the reality is that England is BY FAR the most "Americanized" European country.

The idea that they "must know" simply doesn't hold water... they can't find a woman in France that didn't hear abour Joe Millionaire? All of Spain? Italy? Germany? Switzerland? Belgium? Greece? Ireland? Poland? Norway? Denmark? Netherlands? Portugal?

That's 14 countries right there. English is commonly spoken in many of these countries, it shouldn't have been that hard at all.

I watched Evan the Train Wreck all the way through. First to last. Never missed one. Jeez. I needed a life.

Seriously, though.

Anyway, I hope there's some kind of a twist to this (like, maybe, I don't know... they actually *let* the guy choose!) but it's all pretty routine now that we've seen the first JM and FLOM (1&2).
