"5/12: Disco Results Show -- West Coast Update"

Posted by AyaK on 05-12-04 at 07:56 PM
LAST EDITED ON 05-12-04 AT 07:56 PM (EST)

Tonight, Fox runs the Idol results show at the freaky time of 8:54 PM EDT to 10 PM EDT. Why? So Fox can show a special 10-minute preview of the sucktastic The Day After Tomorrow from 8:44 PM to 8:54 PM, that's why!

Anyway, please keep all posts about tonight's results show in this thread until after Idol airs on the West Coast, ok?

Thanks Ayak. I'm going to have to check my Tivo and make sure it's set up correctly.

Fox is just cruel to those of us who are math-impaired. That would be 6 minutes before 8 Central time, right?

Miscellaneous Ramblings
--I am thinking of skipping it and going to bed early.

Anybody excited about seeing Donna Summer perform? I know I'm not. I can't believe it's going to be an hour long too.

I agree. An hour is too long.

My Tivo picked up the weird start time. Oh and Bump.

"My kids..."

...(who are 8 and 6) are THRILLED by the chance to see Donna Summer perform. They love "On The Radio" and "Last Dance." (Of course, they also love "Funkytown" and "YMCA")

Well at least someone will be enjoying it even if it is children. I'd rather hear your kids sing her songs.

Give me a break, just tell us who's leaving, what's going to happen next week, circus clowns?

No, I think they're going to feature William Hung as guest artist....

AyaK
Did you really just call William Hung an "artist"?

"Hints"
Posted by AyaK on 05-12-04 at 11:05 PM
The psychic was used to hint to us that LaToya was getting the boot. I guess I didn't want to believe it at the time.

"RE: Hints"

You know, I was wondering about that at the time. Sure was a surprise!

Must have been Paula's idea...

So, is it Donna Summer night or Dion Warwick night. This? Is crap. I am going back to the Sox...

"RE: This "pyschic""
Posted by Fishercat on 05-12-04 at 09:05 PM
You know, as a Sox fan, I should be going back to watch them, but I am not really in the mood to see a guy named Cliff Lee silencing the bats and Tim Wakefield having an oddly horrible night (A 9 ERA, from Wake? What gives).

Blargh, Psychic/Donna v. Sox getting owned by the Tribe.

I'm going off to cry now.

"RE: This "pyschic""
Posted by greenmonstah on 05-12-04 at 09:14 PM

So, is Fishercat from Manchester Fishercats? Great name...

I am worried about Lowe as well...something is off with thier location...

"RE: This "pyschic""
Posted by Fishercat on 05-12-04 at 09:19 PM
That's the inspiration behind it. One of those things at my mother's former boss's cat, nasty things they are, still a nice team name.

Lowe worries me to death. He is off with his location, he has a lot of miscues on defense on the ground behind him (which kills a sinkerballer like him), and he just hasn't be performing to where you want a #3-#4 on a playoff contender to perform.

The one silver lining about that is that he could lose a lot of value in FA with his tendencies, and that could mean Boras might be less of a monster to deal with.

As long as the pitching can stay like this until Trot, and to a slightly lesser extent, Nomah get back, I'll be happy. Can't complain about a league low overall ERA.

"RE: This "pyschic""
Posted by greenmonstah on 05-12-04 at 09:24 PM

*likes Fishercat...despite Monster reference*

I agree...and you know things are not so bad in Boston if our biggest pitching problem is the #5 slot...#2 slot? Got that covered baby!

"RE: This "pyschic""
Posted by Fishercat on 05-12-04 at 09:30 PM
Well, the #5 slot isn't a problem anymore. Kim is now seeing time in AAA, throwing for the Pawsox (No clue who they called up in his place, maybe Trot/Nomar are ready to return), so it is Bronson (Bronson is a pretty weird name now that I think about it) for the while. Still, when the biggest problem is the #5 and you have two elite pitchers in the top 2 spots (albeit one being a bit low on the scale of duration), things are good in Beantown.

And a nice big whoops on the monster reference. I would have said something else about Scotty Boy, but I don't think some people would appriciate it.

I am very happy with the Sawx right now, they just have to keep it up...well...other than that losing to an AL Central Cellar Dweller thing.

What is this, 5 minutes on a psychic/mind reading thing? Do they really need to waste this much time?

Well, on the good side, it isn't an ad for Ford Motorvehicles.

And here goes Seacrest about the Idols going on tour. Blah blah blah yap yap yap

And here comes Donna and the Idols.

They were VERY excited. I guess I'll have to find them a copy of "Thank God It's Friday," the worst movie ever to win an Oscar (for "Last Dance," natch), to watch sometime -- but just to see Donna's songs!

I can honestly say that the Idols (with the exception of Jasmine who killed it as usual) sounded better than Donna. Poor Fantasia being stuck singing with Jasmine.

Donna again?

Now to a coinflip on odds of me switching to auction central, might be nice to buy something for the sake of buying something, hey, may even be a gift. (mini-random rant sort of thing)

Meh, the funny thing is, they could have done this in the 6 minutes between the DAT preview and 9:00 PM EST, or they could give each of them another disco and/or fun performance.

I voted for Jasmine and was very satified at the results from tonight and so did other fellow Americans who voted for her. Yesterday wasnt her style of music but she can sing ballads. I would think you would wish there will be another AI, otherwise what will you complain about.

Another one bites the dust. Final 3: should've been Jennifer, Latoya and Fantasia.

So did Latoya get the boot, or is the rumor true, she refused to sign a contract and wanted to leave? That sounds like a cop-out.

"RE: Jasmine..."
Posted by Hughs girl on 05-12-04 at 09:57 PM
Well like they said - if you didn't vote and keep voting for your favorite then they don't get a chance to B%tc#. And I guess if you have the support of your area fans and they all vote than that's how it goes. No matter how much everyone B%tc#s it's not going to change.

You cannot judge a person if they cried just to get a pity vote -if this is what she intended to do - well then it worked and she's still there. If you are a woman you know that you don't have good days 365 days a year - I know I get emotional around that time of the month and anything can set you off.

"RE: Jasmine..."

Doesn't anybody realize that we're liable to see Jasmine win it all? Not that she should by any stretch of the imagination, but here's why...isn't the time zone in Hawaii a good 3 hours or so behind California? And wouldn't that mean that people in Hawaii that can "power dial" have the phone lines all to themselves on voting night? What a travesty.

"RE: Jasmine..."
Posted by realityjunky on 05-13-04 at 01:02 AM
I said this in another thread but they way I understand it is the polls are open for the same amount of time in each time zone whatever the time zone...I am in the western time zone and my polls open at 9pm PST and close 2 hours(maybe 1) later...I think there might be something happening with the company collecting the votes...I read somewhere that they outsource the vote collecting to a company...I think the company might not have the capacity to collect such a large quantity of votes...JMHO

"RE: Jasmine..."
Posted by PuttPutt on 05-13-04 at 08:17 PM
Think about it this way. My polls open at 9 p.m., in the Eastern time zone, it's earlier where you are, so you're not voting yet. Your polls open at 9 p.m., where I live on the east coast we're done voting. It keeps rolling across the country this way. But when you get to Hawaii, there's nobody voting with them (except maybe a few people in Alaska). I'm done at that point, and you're done voting too. Unlike other time zones, I would think Jasmine has a vast majority of support in her time zone. When I try to vote for anyone, I get a busy signal due to the volume of calls. But I bet that doesn't happen in Hawaii.

With her in, it was getting boring to listen to the judges sing her praise and say that she is the winner! not in those words ofcourse....Anyway,
I agree with the last post in that she needs to work on her personality....She'll be fine though....

You know, I'm to that point also, it will sink the ship for sure, especially when it gets proven that William Hung can sell more albums. I wonder if Jasmine enjoyed the boos she was getting for staying.

I hope Jasmine's family can afford to buy all of her albums to save face when they only sell in Hawaii.

Oh! I hope it does come down to a Jasmine/Diana 2, and I'm sure it will. I can't wait to see what kind of record sales will happen in the next 6 months. Diana is decent and I think she has a certain market (hey, she'll make a great role model for the pre-teens), but I doubt she'll be the success that Kelly, clay and ruben have been. AI will lose the mature audience.

She's not corny or teenage enough to win the title (not that the previous winners don't have women fans, but I think the target audience is younguns), and after reading that article on the contract, I wouldn't want to see her stuck in that for the rest of her life. Now she can do the little tour and then entertain offers that will do her right.

Plus, now I can stop watching the show.
Whew. Glad all that's over.

Hmm, thank you very much! Good reading, though I am not surprised at all the AI team would take advantage of a bunch of rookies.

I'm quite sure that LaToya will get a recording contract out of this, too, and I'm sure that AI will claim her through the contract, and not let her go to another label.

because I am done watching. This show has become a big joke and the ratings will continue to drop until someone decides a complete overhaul is needed to restore a real sense of competition among the contestants. There's no excitement this year and without some serious changes in regards to the selection process, next year will be the same way.

"Again, not really a surprise"
Posted by AyaK on 05-12-04 at 10:13 PM
It seemed obvious that, of the trio LaToya/Jennifer/Fantasia, only one of them could make it to the final two. So it's not really a surprise that only one of them made it to the final three. The fact that it was Fantasia who made it IS a surprise, but not a shock.

However, considering this week's voting, I wouldn't say that Fantasia has a lock on making it to the finals. I've normally been a LaToya voter, but I voted for Diana this week (hey, I vote based on weekly performance, and Diana was the best). Right now, though, I'm planning to vote for Jasmine all the way!

Then maybe she and William Hung can have a head-to-head face-off. I wouldn't want to place odds on that one, either.

"Racist / Rigged Show??? I Think So!!!!"

I really do not understand what is going on with this show. I wanted to say it when the voted Jennifer Hudson off but didn't but now it is crystal clear.
"THIS SHOW IS RACIST"

"THIS SHOW IS RIGGED"

I refuse to watch it any longer, I do not care who wins anymore.

Diana sang well as did Latoya and Fantasia, but Jasmine did not sound anywhere near the other contestants.

I think that this is Tamyra Gray all over again.

I wish and pray that Fantasia would just drop out of the competition and let the show go strait to HELL.

If I sound bitter, it is because this was not at all FAIR.

From a former fan.

Goodbye and Goodluck (Fantasia) you will need it if you intend to persue the title of "AMERICAN IDOL"

OK, after tonight, I am done!!! Laytoya was the clear cut winner in my eyes and now she is gone!

This show is bogus, and completely ridiculous, and I refuse to watch the last three weeks.

I will not, and I repeat, I will not even post on the boards. I will no longer be apart of this travesty!

So, OT forum, hear I come to stay!!!!!

The show started it's downward spiral when Jennifer was booted, I knew it would continue to go down. The only saving grace will be if Fantasia wins, if she doesn't say goodbye to AI.

Wouldn't it be a hoot to have access to the uncensored backstage comments from Simon and Randy?

I have to wonder if the Simons ever even considered the possibility that an off key singer would beat out so many of the more talented contestants. Who could imagine a situation where the cream would vie against the curds and whey in the finals?

"Bad for American Idol... Good for LaToya"

The American Idol program just committed suicide.

Tonight's elimination shredded any last bit of credibilty this pathetic pandering franchise ever had. The whole thing is permanently and unredeemingly exposed as a sham that does not, and will not ever, reward the best talent.

After Camille Velasco, John Stevens and now Jasmine Trias, the voting process is a laughing stock across the continent. Mark my words, this is the moment when American Idol enters the lexicon as a national joke. They might just as well have kept William Hung so we could all get a good laugh at his expense.

I'm sure the judges are checking their contracts for an escape clause, for even these attention whores won't want further association with such a disaster. Of course, they probably won't need those escape clauses, because the whole thing just went into the toilet. If they bring this show back at all it will never be seen as anything more than America's Drama Club Audition.

BUT...

Good news for LaToya London.

She proved herself to be talented, mature and perhaps even more marketable. She will not win the sham title, which is destined to hang like a noose around the neck of the winner.

Best of all, she will not have to sign a contract with 19 Entertainment, the morons behind this whole crapfest. LaToya instead can sign any recording contract she chooses. she can pick a producer, pick songs, WRITE songs, and get her album to market sooner than the winner. In fact, she's probably looking at HER contract to see if she is required to appear with this jinxed tour to oblivion.

I'm sure that as I write this, other agents and record companies are clawing over each other to get to LaToya. She will be forever seen as the supertalented victim in the tragedy that has become American Idol.

These reality show contestants need a reality check!

She isn't the first one, Jennifer Hudson is already known with that title.

I think there are a few others from the other seasons that have that title. Jennifer wasn't the first and won't be the last.

I didn't say Jennifer was the first one, I said Latoya wasn't the first one and Jennifer already has that title, I was using her as an example because I didn't see the first season and I only saw parts of the second one. If you weren't implying that I said Jennifer was the first one, then just pretend you didn't see this.

"Agree"
Posted by AyaK on 05-12-04 at 11:22 PM
Let's be serious: Idol 1 was seen as a competition between Kelly and Tamyra -- Tamyra got the boot at #4, with Nikki (OK) and Justin (ugh) going on.

Idol 2 did much better, with the only "fluke" being Joshua's survival to #4. The three considered the best were the final 3.

Idol 3, though, is a replay of Idol 1 so far. Right now, we have Fantasia, who had a bad night but is a very good singer, Diana, who had a great night and may turn out to be better than we expected a few weeks ago, and Jasmine (ugh). A Fantasia victory would be great with the producers. A Diana victory would be OK, because she really has improved a great deal during the show, though she'd probably spend some time with a personal trainer before going on the road! Only a Jasmine victory would be a disaster.

VOTE JASMINE!

VOTE JASMINE!

Finally, someone who has a sense of humor, and doesn't take this stoopid show so seriously!

LaToya was the best one there, IMO, but she still is no Clay, as I was reminded tonight. She's better off without this title, and she'll be just fine.

The judges were clearly gunning for a Jasmine boot last night, and they're paying for the backlash once again. When will they learn?

I can't even take credit for Jasmine staying in this week. I only voted a handful of times, and I gave votes to everyone but Fantasia, who I thought had the worst song of the night.

I'll go on record now that Fantasia will win. She'll pick up all of LaToya's votes, and Jasmine and Diana will now split the other votes. I fully expect Fantasia to shout out to LaToya next week, just to make sure she courts the votes. What a phoney! Talk about pathetic tears.

All the crazy voting has saved this season. The talent has ALL been below previous seasons, and they needed something else to generate ratings.

Ugh! I should've stuck with my original PTTE, in which I predicted a final three of Fantasia, Jasmine and Diana, with Diana winning. Too bad I revised it half way through the game. Just goes to show you, first impressions are always right

"RE: Bad for American Idol... Good for LaToya"
Posted by SnowBunny on 05-12-04 at 11:34 PM
I haven't watched AI prior to this season, so I have little reference to turn to regarding voting trends and successes/losses in the past. All I know is what I have seen this season, which was a parade of 8-10 losers filling up space on the stage for 2-4 winners to shine.

My suspicions are the same tonight as they were when Jennifer was booted a few weeks ago, which basically takes me back to the statistics courses most of us had to take in school. Call it what you will -- split diva vote, complacency of Latoya fans who expected her to win the whole deal, sympathy for a single tear that was so overplayed both last night and tonight, demographics and geographics, etc, etc -- what matters is that the best singer is not going to win this competition.

Now, with that said, I have never bought an American Idol CD and would never go to an American Idol concert. HOWEVER, I must say that if Jennifer, Latoya and Fantasia released a CD together I would scoop it up in a New York second. The problem is that noone in American Idol-land cares what I think because I don't vote, I don't buy the CDs, I don't go to the concerts, and I don't intend to buy one of those cheesy t-shirts highlighted tonight.

As much as Paula may have been sobbing tonight for her little star, the producers must be laughing their way to the bank. After Jennifer's ouster, they had a record number of votes the following week in reaction to the HUGE publicity the show got. Even Elton John got into it on the morning news shows. IMAGINE what the reactions will be this week -- and the money this show will make. American Idol going down the toilet? Hardly. This is just what the show needed for their PAYING audience.

"RE: Bad for American Idol... Good for LaToya"
Posted by TeamJoisey on 05-13-04 at 10:49 AM
You don't like my "down the toilet'? You argue that people will vote like crazy next week. That may be so. But the same 100,000 people voting 300 times does not make an audience. Fantasiacs will vote, Diana's fans will vote, Jasmine's fans will vote, and LaToya's fans will vote, most likely for Fantasia.

But beyond this pathetic season, the show has been revealed as a pretense, and has irretrivably lost its luster.

Let me rephrase:

It is a parody of its own potential.

It may continue to draw viewers, and voters, but the discerning audience just got on the bus.

It no longer has any meaning.

It is done as a phenomenon.

American Idol has jumped the shark.

Fantasiacs will vote, Diana's fans will vote, Jasmine's fans will vote, and LaToya's fans will vote, most likely for Fantasia.

It is beginning to sound like there will be a contingent of voters who will vote Jasmine as payback to the show and producers to finally get them to fix the inherent flaws in the system. It could be interesting to see how that plays out. I don't watch the show itself but I will tune in to the last five minutes of the results show. I'm one of those who tries to avoid staring at roadside accidents, but I think this one will be just too good to miss, especially Simon's reaction if he winds up having to promote Jasmine.

I am glad you got my point, Joisey. As I said, I consider LaToya to be the best of the group but the producers of the show don't care what I think because I am not their target audience. They will make plenty of money without me.

>It may continue to draw viewers, and voters, but the discerning
>audience just got on the bus.

Sure -- but so what? Did you see my article about Idol's two big-name guest judges being lined up for Idol 4: Paul McCartney and Bob Dylan? Think they'll draw fans back? You'd better believe it.

Frankly, this season has been a disaster. NONE of the finalists connected with the audience the way that Clay, Ruben and Kimberley did. But who wouldn't tune in to Idol 4 to see the Idols do Dylan? Or the British Invasion?

"RE: The guest judge phenomenon"
Posted by idlegossip on 05-14-04 at 03:54 PM
Then they better get 12 finalists who can sing off-key to be able to do Dylan well!

I, for one, wouldn't be interested in any of his stuff, and certainly not wanting to hear them try to sing anything from Wings. But, I came in after the Beatles explosion, and Dylan is too old for me too, so I have no attachment to any of it. Just my opinion, of course.

However, I think they could have made better guest judge selections than we had this season. But, I probably won't watch next season unless the auditions are worth watching, too. We rolled on the floor laughing when Keith sang Madonna. William Hung was momentarily funny, but quickly became a sad testament to mockery, in my book. I hope the poor guy never figures out just how much they were mocking him with his supposed popularity. Even if he gets to spend the money he made doing it. The auditions to AI3 were boring, and the season hasn't been much better.

I think what troubles me the most, for what it's worth, is that the general public - or at least the general media who thinks it knows the public - doesn't take AI finalists very seriously. I just read that Clay's "Solitaire" has been top on the charts for 7 weeks (may be higher now), but as far as airtime, he's around 97th or something. Letterman had Clay on, singing "Invisible", and he left him so little time to sing that he didn't get through the whole song when a commercial cut in. And where are Ruben and Kelly? What treatment will this season's idol get? Will they be interviewed about their talent or the travesty of the votes this season?

So, you have this indifference to these "fabricated" Idols, and then this crazy voting and people crying that it's racist or fixed or other accusations. It doesn't help that the show is said to be losing credibility, because we would like to see our idols make it, right? But, it seems to be doing exactly that. I find that very sad. It is such a testament to how things get abused. The supposed intent of the show was to find the most talented, but it's more like popularity. Then again, Britney isn't popular because she can sing, after all!

(We gotta b*tch or we'll explode!)

She seemed remarkably relaxed while singing. Class act all the way. I have to wonder if she's thinking the same thing that you posted.

"Not surprised"
Posted by Breezy on 05-12-04 at 11:05 PM
I didn't watch the show, had to watch the bachelor tonight... doing the summary.

Not at all surprised that LaToya is gone though. I really think she turned a lot of people off by her comments Tuesday night. Add that to the fact that we still don't know her or her style and that adds up to her boot.

She is a good singer and I wish her well, but she's not the American Idol. Let's think about the term American Idol for a bit.... I see it as American Teen Idol. LaToya was a stepmother to teens, not an idol. Fantasia is a single mother, not really an idol for teens. At this point it wouldn't surprise me a bit for this to come down to Diana and Jasmine, the two teens. Now before some jump all over me for stating these things, remember this is my opinion and how I see this competition.

"RE: Not surprised"
Posted by shedevil on 05-12-04 at 11:11 PM
I think you're right but not for those reasons. They had Kelly who stole the show with her amazing voice, then they had Clay who stole the show with his singing, and Ruben who is good but boring (so Latoya couldn't have that title), so all they had left to have was a mediocre teen singer and a teen singer who sucks. We'll see if they get their wish.

"Using your examples"
Posted by Breezy on 05-13-04 at 08:08 AM
Kelly- great voice, girl next door personality.

Clay- great voice, geek factor.

Ruben- good voice, big teddy bear personality.

LaToya- great voice, ?..... she had no pull or personality.

"RE: Not surprised"
Posted by rjrabbit on 05-13-04 at 04:52 PM
Just wondering She. You said you didn't watch the first season and only parts of the second season. Are you basing your statements that Kelly and Clay stole the show that Kelly won and Clay came in second or something else?

"RE: Not surprised"
Posted by shedevil on 05-13-04 at 10:51 PM
Rabbit, when I said "stole the show", I meant blew people away with their amazing voices. I count Clay as a winner too because of his record sales.

Posted by hotwetgirl1981 on 05-12-04 at 11:27 PM
Right, that is your opinion and this is mine.

I disagree, I don't think that the show is for teens. Kimberely and Ruben were not teens, they were out of high school and in college.

Fantasia is not single she has a boyfriend which I think is the Father of her child. But that is besides the point. The reason that these people are on the show is because they are good singers(well most of them) not because they have a baby, or other things that do not concern us. We want a person to win because they have a good voice.

I thought that was what the show was based on. But I guess not because Jasmine is still on the show.

I think the Producers would be ecstatic with a Jasmine win. She's young, pretty, ethnic (can't claim racism), and would provide RCA with a different type of singer to compete with the likes of Hillary Duff. Her CD would go platinum in Hawaii alone.

The next two weeks are basically judges/performer's choice and then the Final song. If they want Jasmine to win, they will make sure she sounds good the next two weeks and they can use the "oh my gosh, she totally brought it the final 2 weeks" storyline to take off some of the hate.

I think 19E is looking to sign 3 singers:

Latoya - Self made in the adult contemporary market.
Fantasia - R&B
Jasmine/Diana - The pop princess.

Latoya and Fantasia are gold no matter what. But Jasmine or Diana need to win it. 19E needed to break up the Fantasia/Latoya pairing now. They couldn't do it next week in case the backlash was too strong. (No one would buy a Diana CD when everyone hates her. Now they can dump Jasmine is she gets too much hatred and Diana is unscathed)

Managerr, your post makes sense, but I was watching AI with a group tonight and when they announced LaToya was going home I got out of my chair and laid myself flat out in the floor--causing several nods since everyone felt that way INSIDE. It just flattened me right out. I really, really thought Jasmine was going home tonight.
I do know that any of the top 4 have a chance at a good career, but this was the last evidence I needed that America is voting with agendas. And that is giving a fair benefit of the doubt to no show manipulation. The judges looked shocked to me, and the audience booed, which almost never happens. That may be further up in the thread, haven't had time to read the whole thing yet.

hmmm That makes a lot of sense, managerr. I have said from the beginning that even if they were voted off 11th and 12th, Latoya and Fantasia would get contracts. I'm sure tons of people think that way and don't vote for them.

That being said, when they announced the bottom 2, I left the room.

Edited to fix spelling.

FWIW, IMHO, I would much rather see Camille than Jasmine there now.

Don't Blam me. I didn't vote for her.

I know Jasmine doesn't deserve to be where she is right now, but I honestly don't think she's a non-talent either. She just doesn't know how to use the voice that she has.

Since Amy was sent home, I haven't really cared much about who would win.
