It was all pretty lame in the beginning. WAY too much yelling and "in your face" action for this pacifist to handle.

But...when the pig farmer triumphed over her own inadequacies, I practically gushed.

Besides...I can't wait to see Myer get whats coming to him. Only a fool would buy into his "sensitive" ploy. It might get him through a few more episodes. We'll have to see.

I admit it..I'm a sucker for reality t.v.

....oh yeah, if you call "barely being able to run her fatass a whole fricken MILE AND A HALF" triumphing, then I guess i'd have to reluctantly agree with you...and then she pulled a groin muscle on top of that and had to be carried off the hill on stretcher....word of advice, just cause you farm'em, doesn't mean you have to be one.

....hopefully its $500,000 cause he's the only reason worth watching so far, the guy is friggen hilarious, and he doesn't even know it.

KooAlla...meet Shakes... Shakes, meet KooAlla.. LOL
What would we do without your biting humor, Shakes.

I too was impressed with her, simply because I am in much better shape than her, and I don't know if I could have done it at all. Two blocks and my sides cramp up.. LOL

I agree, Shakes, that Meyer is entertaing, but he gets on my nerves, and is Boot Camp's Jerri as far as I'm concerned, and I can't wait till that jerk gets his.. ( Oh yeah, unless it's like Survivor where that assohle schemer always wins.. )

I think I'll like it.. although I agree with Koo, that at the beginning, all I did was wince and cover my ears...

One more thing... Is it me?? Or did those FOOL women really believe that ass Meyer when he cried?? I can't believe they fell for his sh!t. I would have known from jump street what his motivation was...Those women give women a bad name...

*** GO KATHERINE*** LMAO!

.....Kira, you've got to stop feasting on the necks of wino's and crack addicts cause its starting to affect your vision and perception Meyer = Jerri....NO WAY! Meyer even said that he is there to have fun and thinks they should all be getting to know each other and have a good time rather than take that sh!t seriously.....that is as anti-Jerri as you can get.

Sure, he's stupid, talks in the third person and scurries around like a rat w/ his scheming attempts...but, he's downright hilarious to watch and appears to get along a lot better with the women than 90% of the other guys on the show...I saw that he was the only guy to actually go sit with the girls during one of the meals.

Just think of him as the class clown who also just happens to be a complete idiot, but in a funny way.

"What a crappy show"
Posted by Blow by Blow on 03-29-01 at 01:14 PM
This show really stinks! I'm watching Survivor, though it simultaneously bores and aggravates me. I watched a couple of episodes of TI, but the premise (and predictable outcome) was too disturbing ("These people are in happy relationships, let's ##### with them for awhile.") But I thought I'd give this crap show from Fox a whirl.

What I don't understand, and I think Meyer would agree, is why these people are trying so hard. Is there some sort of discipline that the DIs can enforce? Is there a stockade? If not, why don't they just kick back, eat crappy food, and work on their tans? It's clear that many of the guys feel they missed out on a chance to prove themselves earlier in their lives. It wouldn't surpise me if the women just got rid of the jerks one at a time.

However, putting my disgust aside, I've decided that these suckers are going to work much harder for their 15 minutes and $500K than the turkeys on Survivor. I think the pig farmer deserves a little dough for dragging her ass the mile and a half that all the studs polished off in 10 minutes.

I quit!

I suspect that if someone did that to an extreme, then they could and would be dismissed by the DIs (or producers) as "untrainable." The show would obviously fall apart if everyone had Meyer's attitude (and you're right, what are the DIs gonna do, court-martial them?)

For example, if Meyer had just refused to be "punished" with those break area procedures (where they were making him do all those pushups and crap), then I would imagine he'd be outprocessed. I would also venture to guess that contestants receiving their pay (whatever level it is) depends on them playing the part of "recruit".

This was what I found very disturbing about the "realism" of this show. If this is supposed to be a military-style boot camp, then these women fail to understand what's going on. Meyer's actions and attitude would never pass in a real boot camp, either. This may be the Achilles' Heel of this show and will determine its success or failure. The marriage of military boot camp and Survivor-style-vote-off player relationships may end in acrimonious divorce.

I wonder if she's really a pig farmer. Anyone THAT out of shape should not only be on this show (can you say "fatal heart attack"? I knew you could....) but probably shouldn't be farming...

I dunno, you guys. . . I only had this on behind me while I farted around on the computer, so admittedly didn't give it my full attention, but the general feeling I got was that there's a good reason I dislike big-mouthed military-types. About halfway through it, I became aware that something was making me cringe and feel anxious--and the majority of the show seemed to consist of this bunch of assholes bellowing their lungs out.

I had thought it would be nice to see people suffer for their pathetic 15 minutes and half a million, but must WE suffer, too? And is it just me, or am I right in feeling that everyone we're going to see on this kind of show thinks they have it all figured out, after watching SI--and yet each subsequent group will actually be less effective at the "people skills" (i.e. manipulation)? (A word to the wise: Insecurity is a sign of true intelligence--if you're a cocky sumb¡tch, you're probably going down. . .) And what is WRONG with these people, that they would volunteer to have anything to do with this?!

I may give this another try, but my initial reaction is Bleagh.

You said it well George.

This show is just not for me. If I want to listen to people yelling all I need to do is open my windows and listen to the neighbors for a little while - but for for an hour...

This show gives me the creeeeeps.

Thanks for the validation, Ronnet.

I was struck by another thought this morning: the whole boot camp experience is too much like the Greek system at college--during Hell Week, you let people abuse you, humiliate you, see how desperate you are to be in their little club, with the promise that at the end you'll see how amazingly "worth it" it all is, because you're "establishing a strong bond with your brothers/sisters that will last a lifetime." Yeah, right. Or a bunch of sadists are so thrilled to finally have the power to mete out misery and get misplaced revenge for all the crap that THEY went through to join some pathetic social club!

I just don't think this speaks very well for the military; can't they motivate people without doing a complete mindfukk? And I've interacted with enough ex-marines to know that they're creating monsters with a dangerously warped sense of their own place in the scheme of normal society. . . (And I delighted in saying "EX-marine," because I've been told in no uncertain terms that there IS no such thing--they're supposed to be gods-for-life.) I realize the show is about the money, but I can't help wondering what kind of PR it's going to be--especially since the military already has a hard time finding recruits. Pretty much shoots that high school recruiter's rosy scenario of great opportunities, work conditions, and a great way to see the world!

Gee, I guess I have some serious issues with authority figures--and Teamwork in general!

(shakes off the willies) Maaaaaan, I need to go listen to some Ravi Shankar, light up some Gonesh, and take myself to a more peaceful place, lest I recapture that uptight feeling from this show, last night. This calls for some time in the hammock, sniffing jasmine and orange blossoms. (Sorry--had to gloat about my S FL weather. . .)

There is some truth to this and there are similarities. It's funny, though: I went through all that military stuff but wouldn't join a fraternity (despite some offers) because I didn't want to go through all that crap as a pledge.

>I just don't think this speaks
>very well for the military;

That's the whole point. Real boot camps are training soldiers, sailors and marines to be in the military. The job of the military is to go into COMBAT. Deterrence is NOT the job of the military, although a strong military generates deterrence. Therefore, a complete mindf*** is part of what is needed to become tough enough mentally to endure combat.

> And
>I've interacted with enough ex-marines

Not all of them are like that, I know many Marines (note the lack of the "ex-") who are quiet, well-adjusted good members of society.

This was due to who was commander-in-chief for the last eight years (Clinton). I'm not saying this to argue politics with you, just stating a fact. This show is not going to help or hurt military recruiting.

Also, if you think THIS is something, wait until that "Combat Missions" airs, which is supposed to be based on realistic Special Forces type missions.

Pretty much shoots that high school recruiter's
>rosy scenario of great opportunities,
>work conditions, and a great
>way to see the world!

That stuff will still work. Most people who walk into a recruiting station are already considering the military, so no biggie.

>Gee, I guess I have some
>serious issues with authority figures--and
>Teamwork in general!

Or it's just your philosophical/political mindset.

I get it now...Rupert Murdoch and his right-wing cronies have just come up with the best recruiting tool for the military since Top Gun! The show will inspire high school kids to say, "Damn, I could kick that pig farmers ass. This camp don't look so tough!" and head to the local recruiters office.

Also, I'm guessing a large part of the audience are military types who are snickering at the pathetic civilians, while simultaneously complaining that they had it much worse when going through basic training for Nam.

I have a strong hunch the bellowing will tone down a bit in future episodes. It was annoying; but, most likely used to make a point in the first episode. Now that we "get the premise", hopefully, the bellows will be more to fill time and the recruits will actually get the air time. Plus, pulling a "Kel vote" in the first episode was too funny (thought for sure the Pig girl...I mean farmer) would get it first.

I was also irritated at all the yelling and I can't understand how anyone would willingly put themselves through that for a month. Perhaps to see if you could succeed and make it through but I also get a cramp after running a few blocks.

I am so out of shape.

I just hope that the every episode isn't like the first one.

I just noticed that the DI were spitting when they were yelling. Ewww! And I really wonder what their breath smells like.

I think of the oddest things while watching these shows.
