"I don't get it"

The biggest mystery on this show is why would somebody name a son Dana? What kind of a name is that? Why not name a girl Bob? Or why didn't they chose to name him Michelle, Sarah, or Bambi? That name really has me bothered everytime Zach comes into a scene.

FTR, I know two male Danas.

Now, a girl named Bob...that would just be WEIRD. (LOL)

One of my T'ai Chi teachers taught English in China for a couple of years to study T'ai Chi over there.

He inherited a class where they had all taken English names and one of the woman in there went by "Bob".

He talked to her after class to let her know that was a Male name. She said that she knew that and chose it for that reason. Seems her Dad wanted a boy and her Chinese name was a Boy's name as well and she just was used to having her name not match her gender.

His mother was a drug addict and from a wealthy family. Maybe it's a family name.

It could be worse. The name could have been Leslie, Carol, or Meredith. I've seen all of them used as men's names, as well as Dana.

Me too, Silvergirl. Once when I worked at the law firm, we had a defendant whose first name was Carol, and he went by "Chuck."

For what it's worth, Carol is used as a male name in the province of Quebec while Carole is used as the feminine version. There was a NHL hockey player named Carol Vadnais. Karol is also pretty widespread amongst eastern European men.

I suspect, in truth, his name was "Carroll" like the late actor Carroll O'Connor.

It's a male name.

My uncle's name was Carroll.

Could be pregnant.

ETA: During the entire second half of the episode, Mr. B just kept saying, "He's married. I'll bet he's married."

Ah, isn't this from another show, I'm surprised there's a GREY area when it comes to a mod's choice of threads to lock. he-he, half-serious joke here.

If this were a discussion of specific show details or spoilers, then yeah, a moderator may try and get back on topic. But since this is a tangential discussion inspired by the show, it's not distracting.

And when it comes to locked threads, usually those are the results of alerts from fellow posters who are tired of duplicate threads and correctly approach a moderator about the subject.

If my memory serves me right, there was an actor named Dana Andrews. That name sticks in the back of my mind for some reason.

Dana is cross-gender name, just like Lou, Joe/Jo, Bobby/Bobbie, Jerry/Jerrie, etc.

I had a horrible crush on Shannon McMurray, and have since loved the name for a boy.

(He's the one on the left.)

We used to drink coffee at a coffee shop, and I thought I was the luckiest girl in the world. His high school band practiced across the street from my house, and their singer's little sister and I had little groupie shirts made with Shannon's initials on the front.

Needless to say, I never stood a chance after my overly affectionate crush that more than likely freaked him out.

His newest band has been together awhile, and are really great. They're called Maxeen:

My Matthew was almost a Shannon, but my open-minded husband said "eff no."

There's a shop supervisor in the company my hubby works for named Shannon.
I am sure as I'm sitting here that part of the reason he is the way he is, is from being abused about his name growing up =)
He's a big ole boy...walking wall that people are afraid of! Not me though, I love to pick on him cause he's only 2 inches taller than I am - I'm 6'2" and he is afraid of me LOL.
When my hubby was hurt at work, Shannon refused to be the one to call me...he said, and I quote " there's no WAY I'm making that call! After she kills him she's going to come looking for me!"
it's a running joke in the shop now...Shannon's scared of a woman...till the rest of them met me, now they understand *grin*

"I didn't know it was a girl's name"

until I moved to the midwest.

The only Danas I knew in New England were boys.

Here in Ohio it seems to be a girl's name (often named after a father named Daniel, but the parents thought Danielle had been done to death).

As for famous people:

Dana Andrews and Dana Carvey - both men

Queen Latifa's real name is Dana, but she was born after 1970.

As soon as the baby stealing story started coming out, I figured the writers used a both-gender name on purpose to confuse the viewers (much like when they named the baby Jamie on 'Malcolm in the Middle' and didn't refer to him as a boy for 3 or 4 episodes)

I've known a few male Danas in my time, so I don't think that it is all that strange. The strangest male name that I've come across is Hilary. He'd get very upset if you suggested that it was a girl's name. and where he came from (South Africa I think) it was actually a typical male name (or so he claimed).

I knew a boy named Hilary once. His sister's name was Charlotte, so their parents must have liked obscure names.

I agree completely about the name Dana. Although in theory it's a gender neutral name, every time they brought up the Dana/Zach story line last season, I kept thinking (long after I KNEW BETTER) that the secret was that they'd reassigned her sex, and that Zach used to be a girl. I just kept forgetting I was supposed to think Dana as a boy's name was normal.

sheesh. Unless they have more secrets to reveal, I think they should have gone with something less confusing, like Jamie.

Ashley, Jordan, and Lindsay, and Brooke used to be male names; now they're primarily female names. Seems like the females just take over all the cool male names.

I would like to call my first-born daughter AVERY but my mother-in-law would kill me, I think. In the South, AVERY is supposedly ONLY a male name. Everywhere else it seems to be a female name. I had never heard of it being a male name until I met her (that was my husband's father's uncle's name) and she had never heard it as a female's name until I told her that was the name I plan on calling our first daughter. She didn't look overly excited. She didn't seem too crazy about my choice of a boy's name (CALEB) either. Come to think of it, I'm not sure she's all that crazy about ME either!!! Hmmmm.....

I don't know if you've ever heard of the 1940s actor "Dana Andrews" but the guy was entirely male.

In fact, I have two good MALE friends named Dana and it's (in my opinion) always been a boy's name.

Just to fool you to steer you into thinking - male? female? It is an either or kinda name. The kid is so wound up who would have thought that he wasn't theirs.

There is a website that summarizes tv shows and I guess the writer who writes the DHW summaries is so amused by various things about the Dana/Zach names, he calles the character "Zana". It amused me so much I call him that in my head when I'm watching the show, like "Oh look, Zana is on this episode! I haven't seen him in a couple of weeks...."

I knew I guy named Ashley who said girls always would say they LOVED his name and they always wanted to have a daughter named Ashley. He hated that. His mother read Gone With the Wind when she was pregnant with him and named him after the (wimpy) Ashleigh in the book.
